Mar 23, 2020
All right, you joined us about twenty minutes ago or so after the Senate president, more like the majority leader, had that press conference or at least got an update on things and they weren't looking very good. Did you learn anything else that gives us insight? of hope that things

will

get done today in the last 20 minutes, which we've heard from some other Republican leaders, including Kevin McCarthy, in the House, but so far, Alex, the sense of extreme urgency that Americans feel across the country for receiving financial aid at this time. doesn't seem to break the logjam here on Capitol Hill, we're hearing from Republicans who feel they're very close to a deal.

Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, says they still

plan

to have a vote today in just a couple of hours basically a procedural vote that would put things in motion to allow them to vote tomorrow on an actual piece of legislation, with their fingers crossed so that they actually have a deal to vote on at that time, but we also heard from Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader. who rushed back from California to be able to work on these negotiations and I want you to hear a little bit about what these leaders said at the Capitol just a few minutes ago.

will

soon have to say yes. or not, we will introduce our own

bill

with what they are discussing, so there is no agreement that is bipartisan at this time and Alex, did you hear Nancy Pelosi, they are saying that the Democrats

plan

to introduce their own

bill

that does not particularly bode good to solve all. of this quickly and to make sure that they can have a final vote tomorrow, we have heard McConnell and other Republican leaders say that they do not think it will be productive at this late stage of the negotiations for Democrats to introduce a new, separate bill that only makes make it harder to get everyone on the same page and get a bill passed, but from Nancy Pelosi we heard her talking to her staff as they were leaving a meeting today saying we're very far apart Alex Josh, what you just said about the Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he doesn't think it's helpful for Democrats to introduce their own bill right now.

There are definitely politics being played here right now, as always, Republicans are right that there is an urgency now that they need to do everything they can to get something out as quickly as possible, but Democrats have some very serious concerns about the legislation. such as The current situation refers more particularly to the restrictions or lack of sufficient restrictions on how companies are going to use this money to make sure that they actually use it in the way that most benefits Americans who are struggling rather than shore up the bottom lines of these big corporations are fine, so that's very important, so the Democrats are basically trying to ensure with words that the money allocated to the companies is used appropriately or at least with the intention that this project law provides that right. it would be used for unique Americans for employees and that's what they perceive of this, that's exactly right, they don't want Democrats don't want this money to be used for companies to give big lump sum payments, big golden parachutes to their executives, no they do it.

They don't want it to be used by companies that are then going to lay off workers, and they don't want companies to use it to buy back their own shares and improve their numbers on paper, instead of making sure they use that money. to make sure they can keep paying workers and spread it to real people Hi, I'm Chris Hayes from MSNBC.
