OPERATION PRESERVE PATINA! Buffing Oxidized Paint and Applying Linseed Oil - Vice Grip Garage EP56

May 02, 2020
yellow welcome to the

vice

-

grip

garage

in this episode we're back in the '54 Dodge here and a little Hemi and this thing was really good at getting me home about two hundred miles and well, I mean, I actually just shot gas into it and she did his back, so guys need to go ahead and reward him a little bit and I think that has to start with the

paint

ing of this thing, but don't worry, we'll keep all this good

patina

, but I'll show you a method. To remove

paint

oxidation and some surface rust, it's kind of an alternative to scotch brite or combination washing.

I think it's a lot easier and a lot cheaper if you can believe it and then we'll see. If we could start, it's been here for about a month and oh, I forgot that the brake pedal hits the floor again. I have a deal on that and if we can take it to the shop, which I'm thinking about. probably maybe 24% can, then we'll use the polishing machine and the general goal today is to get a little shine here and there, keep the

patina

where we can. In fact, we're even going to apply

linseed

oil to the hood here and try to

preserve

this weight. it rusts and wears down the metals that come out and just trying to make it shine like a diamond because I know you can man this is a lot of work first let's hook up your peepers here so you can see what it's currently doing and you can see the rust here and then It has some rust on this, a lot of this will come off, in fact here is some cheap turtle wax and a little green jug, this is what it looks like and if you are 42 and 9% days old you can keep doing it that way , but this weighs a lot faster, we're going to keep all that low and it looks great.

I like little things like this, the primer that shows. I want to keep all of that, but it's just little light things that I wanted. to clean up here and give it a little shine, this is amazing, I really like the color here, I just want to get more definition down here, make it look a little better, yeah, and I have some bare metal and that's why we are going to do it. The emcee here will try to protect a little that this place has the same rust. If you look closely you can see scratches that come from a wash that actually removed some of the oxidation from the paint.

Oh, I mean, she was, I was there, she was here. This is going to look great once we clean it up and really the only rust on this whole car is a little bit there, a little bit there, otherwise, I mean, it's in really good shape for Minnesota and I think the finish will polish up really well. , even if it really has been. up here to be honest to see if there's any wear but it doesn't really look like it so again the goal is just a little bit of shine a little bit of patina and a lot of cool well here it is it's really simple it's just SOS pads and make sure you get the kind with the soap filled in, it's already built in there and then you really want to make sure that it has the stainless steel in the glass on the front and not the other flavor and the reason I say is I mean, you want the quad zero to zero zero zero zero zero zero zero sir, you've got four zeros and that just means you're really really really good, but before you go out into your driveway and start digging these into your Maserati, I've got to.

I'm telling you this is not for clear coat, this is not for removing wax and tree sap from cars, this is for classic antiques, you know, you just do the rat rod thing, so don't look for this in good paint, it is for enamels. and lacquer paints and things like that, this is a really good example, so you were warned that you might end up with some scratches and stuff, but that's why we're also going to polish it, so I'm going to do half of this trunk here. That way we have one of her you know what she was like and I'll have you look at it from time to time you could really look at it.
All you need is water. I'm just going to put some water in here. with the old garden hose and then go to work, it must be crooked, but the bibs are in the backyard and I won't walk there again. This should work fine, maybe if I save it and then leave, no, not really, don't dig now. Here folks, we're not going to pull a wedgie, just let it slide over the paint and you'll feel it when it smoothes out, just move on to a separate area, the soap will start coming out and it's got some kind of science to it. works fine, I don't know, let it lay in the middle here, something like that, now look at this, you'll be fine, with a little luck, after we polish it, it'll probably look pretty close to that, we just have to be careful. not eat all the paint, but this saves me from gumming up my foam pads and all that, having to clean them all the time, at least get all that top gunk off and then we can polish it a little.
Later, so I'll keep moving and I have a lot of scrubbing to do and I'll check in with you here periodically and then we'll see if we can get this started and then I'll have to take it to my shop. In fact, we'll polish it. It hasn't been out of stock for about a month. He's been here, so it's going to get a little dangerous. I'll be able to find out here in a moment, up here on the hood, guy's gotta be very careful when he sees rust like that, there's about a 100 2.4 percent chance it's straight metal under there, so dig too far. . you know, unless you want that look, but it's a little bit harder to protect, but it doesn't have this cross bottom, so up here all I'm really doing is trying to remove the porous surface.
I'm not going to do a There's a lot up here. I'm going to jump a little. I don't necessarily want bare metal to show. It gives clean colors. Some of you may like it, but I'm going to take it a little easy here. I'll do half the way I want and then I'll show you guys, there you see it, you see a little bit more blue here, a little bit darker than this side. I think it will look very good, yes, I will polish it. from here where there's still paint and then

linseed

, we'll take over from there, pretty much the same thing here on this fender, I'll polish here and then from the bottom go in there, you just have to know this side here. to do and then it's time to see if this thing really catches fire.
I wanted to show you this part here, you can really control it. It says how much a guy wants to show himself. Look where these primers are starting to show. If I really rubbed it, I can. drag that brown color probably all the way to this whole body line here, it's the same as saving this part here, if I rub pretty hard with this SOS pad, I can make this a little bit bigger and a little bit lower, you might want to leave it. her as she is and that's fine, but I liked that brown, so I'm going to go a little deeper and also to show you if you want to leave it the same white and especially when you're polishing it. don't do too much there with the foam pad or here, you would just come in and then polish that area by hand, but I'm going to go a little deeper here and show you what you can do.
If you really want to make it stick out, apply a lot of pressure and then when I see the paint lift up, I'll drag it and push it and drag it and it'll look the same. Here you are pushing into that primer really hard and there you have it. Of course, if you want to make it wider, go in the opposite direction, so I'll make this a little bit wider like this and then I want random angles, so I'll go this way, clean up around the top, this way, this way. Now take some water and wipe it off, there you do it again, that's optional, but you can see that the different directions will give you these different types of marks and it makes it look like it took the guy 40 years in Washington to get there, but I.
I'll probably do a little bit more here and then I'll do the same thing on the door because to me, when you step back and you can see that primer pop up, you know something bad that a guy really likes it and it looks like a brand new car. How can you possibly want to stop here and leave her alone? It has a matte finish, but this time I will wear it a little longer. Most of them I even leave it that way, but I found out that this is all original paint top and bottom, so I really want to give it the job.
I'm going to work on some mountain refreshments while this dries and then we'll do the old energy bar here and see if we can get it to work, yeah. Yeah, I never get old looking at that, well I know she's going to need a de

vice

to make a fire, so I'll throw some of that in there too and then I'll hope the battery is charged because I don't have a charger here at home, wow, too perfect, i guess he just left a key in it, okay this thing is a way to get to me, now find out the accelerator pump carburetors went off, you have a very good accelerator, we've had a lot of rain last month, it really smells a bit like a kicking field in here, like we're Chester Shire, smooth Meg, anyway, I'm going to take care of this for work, maybe and watch the polish slapping, kidding, I don't break .
Oh, whiskey, we'll be fine, so we broke the leading pedals here to the floor and I specifically remember filling that fluid to the top because that reservoir is right down there and it's a pain to get to, but anyway. she's low again that means I have a leak in the wheel cylinder on her 12 so eventually I'll have to deal with that too because you know the brakes aren't necessary but they're kind of nice sometimes every time a boy with Turin syrup gives me water. down here so that's good it keeps the carpet cool anyway every time I try to give her the onion she just know she doesn't like it I would normally live with that but I can't give her a proper test until the old carburetor It's activated right now.
I just have to do it that way and then you can get a little bit of speed out of it, but if you know, you try to call her. She just doesn't like it. Well, I did it. Well, that's kind of bigoted, how do I think I found a smell, not just a hint of mold, here in the back seat? And you know, the best way to get rid of that is to just wipe it down with some parts cleaner, it smells like new, well, here's the equipment. For today, and the good news is that my budget is twenty-six dollars and 38 cents.
I fell short. All you need is a really bad, barely functioning foam pad like this one, missing pieces and stuff, and guy's smart, you don't even do that. I need to buy them, just go to Bob's Auto Body here, whatever you have on the corner and they usually don't give you their old foam and wool pads, but be careful because the wool pads actually bite into the paint, they are fair, You know? the horse stuff and then there's different foam pads and they're for polishing and whatever, and then for us like me who are challenged in the old dome.
I like this because it has the scale on the side and it says three swirl removers which sounds nice but for me if I take it out of the bottle and it's sriracha or ketchup colored this big and if it's mayonnaise colored you're here at the lower end of the scale and that really polishes, so be careful if you get to be Chuck is not a great all this old paint and then you will get angry, so I would start with something a little more or less aggressive, that's the word that I'm looking for probably and then I go from there and I'm going to use this.
I'm going to start with the old roof and then work my way down. It is hot here. Moses. I guess the guy can go ahead and take a second. Give you my four cents on these machines. There are three hundred and ninety. eight thousand four hundred and twelve videos on the old YouTube machine on how to use them properly and what ends up happening is most guys just get scared and, you know, throw them aside and start using their hand, don't do that If you're working on junk like me, you don't have to worry about angle, pressure, speed, time of day and metal temperature and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, it doesn't matter guys, throw it out your juice here.
I start slow mostly. so it doesn't get in my mouth and then when it starts to dry on the old paint, just speed it up a little bit and wipe it off, but it doesn't have to be perfect to go back with the old rag and wipe it off. She, the only thing I care about is heat, you'll know you're doing it wrong if the metal is too hot because all the compounds in America, because of science and the periodic table of elements, don't like heat, so What if If you are running this at 42,000 rpm, you are boiling your product and it will stick to the paint.
You don't want to do that, so take your time and you'll be fine. Where is my central father? Give it a quick snort up here. in the corner and it looks great coming out of it, you can see how it fades into a sort of flat mat, well hopefully the old dome will come out like this, you have to be very careful because this is definitely the factory finish that still has. outside and all that, so we have to take it nice and slow and she'll get out of there. Something worth mentioning if you like your ornament, especially if it's stainless steel, go ahead and tape it off because if you go wrong old world. glow pad here she's going to scratch it off and again you're going to get mad so I'm going to do the right thing and just look at it and not tape it off you know I just smear it like this you know whatever start slow and once make it work, I'll upload itwhile I'm working on the product here.
I can see this getting sticky because I'm not smearing it with the pad, that's how you know it's getting a little warm if you run your finger through it and you can draw lines like that, she's too hot, look, she's got a lighter cooldown or I don't know where my juice is, when you just slather on some more juice you can start over, but don't investigate further, it's just kind. of getting worse four months later we're getting there Oh, I've got this side going like this and I think the plan is I'm going to cut it in half No and then I'll sniff it out and hook it back in there I just don't like working against the wall.
I had the old camshaft fall on my head before and that hurts, but I'm going to be very happy with this. You can see it's not super bright, but it's enough to catch a guy. eyeballs and you know, Moses, what was that thing and I don't want it super super shiny here because that linseed oil when you do that is going to be a little crazy -- it's -- eggshell, I don't know, it's half shiny the parts that I intentionally exaggerated, it looks pretty good, that's exactly what I was looking for and I noticed that up here I was getting a little bit of wear right on the outside of this window, you know, that's because of the lady's arm hanging down.
You could Actually, with the compound, pull this out a little bit more and see some blue there. I think it will look pretty good, but we're not done yet. The top door made a big difference. Well, guys, this side is pretty well done, miss. It looks pretty good, it has a little shine, but definitely enough to poke a guy's eye out. I'll show you what I'm doing here. Basically I'm just doing one wear and polish line and then the rest. I'm going to lower that linseed oil to fulfill this and I'm really just planning on polishing here, they're up here in the front and then I have to figure out how to mix the two together, but it's going pretty well anyway.
I'm going to keep moving, yeah guys, down the stretch. Now I just got love from the driver's side, don't you know? But I ran into a big problem and that is that I am lazy and this is where I am supposed to drive it and turn around. so I can tell, salt or better it wasn't happening so I just hit some floor jacks under the back and raised it up a little bit and I think I have enough room here, in fact, I could lean it against the wall here. and polish it to make it ideal.
In fact, great things happen when you take shortcuts, guys, so, you know, keep proving what arms tingle, but what are you going to do when you haven't started under the hood here? on this side I'll show you the plan here, but you can see that trying to make this look as natural as possible, I actually blended them lightly with the old compound and then I just buffed the actual paint areas to see if I can light them up better because then we're going to have to do the same thing with the linseed, just mix it right here so that the linseed goes into the polishing compound and then these sides are obviously not done, this one will be a little more complicated because there's more blue. here and then there's this piece here that will probably polish up to here, let's pick like this, it's because the linseed on the actual enamel paint is not going to last very long, it's going to be quite greasy and wet and the fenders did the same thing as here. a line like the one on the other side, I'm glad to put that into play and I'm getting really tired so now I'm jumping in with the easy stuff so I'll probably finish the hood and then we'll lie on it on the floor for eighty-six months and I finished that finally she finished she has this side look down I think that's all the car there's a lot of debris it's kind of a low light shot but it's pretty much all over so what I'm going to do is run I'll take her to the home, I'll hand wash it and then I'll park it in the sun there and let it dry and it's very hard to see if there's any residue on light things like that and then there's a couple of stains.
I'm going to put oil like here, maybe even a little bit here where you see some metal on one guy and then before I forget, watch out for these guys, here you know where the thing says on the car because your pads. They'll cut this and bam, it's hooked. outside, be very careful with things like that, use your hand, okay, let's mix up some shine juice and all you need for this is a container of some kind, you're bald, linseed oil, you want to make sure it's boiled and your mineral spirits, mineral spirits. it's optional I like to cut this on just a hair things glow only on a Titch I'm not sure why there's peanut butter in here I think they only use it to catch Jerry so we need it oh I like to start with about four ozzy osbourne here from mineral spirits give it another eight of the old ball you didn't see anything this is going to be too much which is perfect and then you'll get one of these shakers for hundreds and this one came outside the shed here so I mixed it up quite a bit okay, you want to mix it, mix, mix, stir it, bring it here, so basically I just need a dirty rag like this, okay, yeah, the secret here is there's none, you just dip it.
The only thing you need to keep in mind is that this isn't really oil so you don't want to put too much on it because it will never dry out so I like to put a little bit on the rag and then smooth it out as much as you can before dipping it back in. No, until where we buy, flip my rag because it's kind of like a dryer, mix it up here yeah, just a little Bob, you can see how little is a lot and I'm not going to go down to this line yet until I can use all of this and then we'll introduce soft air and we will put my rags that blend very well there.
I don't know, I guess it's always easier to have more. to try to remove a little bit, so I start with a little bit and then I'll apply it to the areas where I need the finished product. There you have it, this will calm it down a bit as it dries. a more matte finish, but I guess I achieved the guy's goal anyway, which was to get the beige paint to blend into the linseed, which I think works pretty well and just remember that you'll have to do that depending on whether It's in the area, you know, six months, eight months, how long it's outside, but it's very easy.
I mean, you could make an entire vehicle in a few minutes. Moisés can't forget this step he will for this episode, but we have a lot going on in the Esquiva here, we have chips and tips and we fix the carburetor suspension brakes and then it needs a proper test. I really have to see what this Hemi does so make sure you subscribe and hit that notification bell and if you have any other ideas or thoughts or things you want to see what the Dodge beep bloop down there that you like to see that too thanks for watching guys, until next time
