Apr 14, 2023i miss The Late Show already in progress ladies and gentlemen my guest tonight is an academy award winning actor who has been in some of your favorite
movies
now he is starring in the new movie Renfield please welcome him to the Late Show Nicholas Cage thank you peace first of all, it is remarkable to me that this is the first time we have met. I know I've been waiting for this for a long time, very excited to know you're coming and second of all, it's been over 10 years since I did. I was at the Ed Sullivan Theater with David Letterman.I see you've done some amazing things. A couple of coats of paint. you're Nicholas Cage trust me that's just me but if you want Nicholas Cage to feel like you can't do better than Nicholas Cage oh well thanks you've been in so many
movies
huh everyone has their favorites obviously me. i'm a National Treasure fan a Raising Arizona fan I'm leaving Vegas uh valley girl oh yeah I was uh 17. 17 and my high school girlfriend had a crush on you and I'm still kinda mad at you for it oh no, what are you What are Nick Cage's five best Nick Cage movies?Let's just lay things out, I'm going to start with Pig, that's my favorite movie, it's pretty recent, okay, I love Mandy, the parent-directed movie, I love, bringing up dead Martin Scorsese. So director and I loved Bad Lieutenant Werner Harris I loved a movie called Joe which uh uh David Gordon green directed very well there you go there you go I face but that's oh I really like that one yeah I love to face yeah that It seemed like it was a lot of fun doing it while you were doing it, yeah you know the interesting thing about facing off and me.
I could have mentioned the vampire kiss because Vampire's Kiss was a little movie I made where I got to explore my most abstract dreams. With film acting, sadly he was playing a character who was losing his mind, but he was starting to think he was the vampire from the original Nosferatu movie and when you're playing a character who's losing his mind, he might think he's not. a srirachi, so I got to act like a German expressionist silent movie star and that was cool like these facial expressions and all that, but Face-Off was a great movie, a great studio movie that I did at Paramount and I got to use what I learned from this little vampire.
Kiss the movie and put it in this giant movie and it worked and I was like people really liked this so I was very happy with those results. i prefer the word actor for sure than the word actor right and i'm curious why uh being pretentious appeals to you ok that's why i say colbert you know that's cool you mentioned it yeah um now listen what i was saying was of course you can call me actor and by the way , I never said don't call me an actor, call me a dramatic actor, that's what we're doing.
CNN picked me up. I'm sure they have more important things to report. Well, what I was saying was that, um, I see acting as a storytelling and what it's like to try to get to the truth of a character and the first actor in Europe. it was someone called thespus and what happened there in greece was he broke free from the chorus and started narrating and started telling a story with the truth so for me acting is trying to find the truth of a story now what is interesting literally the word actor in greek means hypocrite well i don't want to be considered a hypocrite sorry if that sounds pretentious well let's talk about your next movie oh sure this is extremely nice the new movie will Call Renfield, you're starring Nicholas, hang in there, Aquafina and Ben.
Schwartz is it's funny it's horrible um you're Dracula yeah what's the premise well the premise is unique and I think it's very good and very relevant very current and Nick Holt plays Renfield and this is his movie he's playing Renfield and he's so witty and charming for those who don't remember the original story renfield is quite alright he was played beautifully by dwight frye in universal studios dracula original bella lugosi movie he's like a man's servant to dracula is correct but in this movie , Renfield is the star and he's trying to escape a toxic, uh, codependent relationship, he's trying to break free of that and Dracula won't let him, and whoever is a narcissist, he's a sociopathic king of bait and switch. narcissistic tactics um I'm sure they had a lot of fun together maybe 200 years ago on the road as Rogues you know and now that the relationship has soured and uh Renfield wants out and he realizes the error of his ways and I no I don't want to let it out because, to me, Dracula, from my point of view, the reason Dracula is so compelling as a character is that even though he's a supernatural character, it's still about The Human Experience, this blood addiction well you can supplant that with alcohol or heroin or sex and then that's a very human problem or this curse he has of eternal life well what does that really mean does that mean he's going to get his heart broken over and over again forever so he's very hurt about it so in this clip you'll see later when Renfield wants to leave it's a betrayal of Dracula and he's very hurt because Renfield goes into group therapy he goes into a codependent group there it does actually I mean but that was the tricky balance because it's not really It's not a fun topic it's a serious topic so we had to find a way to play it and give it Pathos and genuine consideration for this serious situation and then tap dancing around to find where we could extract the humor, the humor and the multiple beheadings because there's a lot of that, it's also a horror movie, let's not forget, and my favorite, one of my favorite shades in film, is this combination you wouldn't think horror and comedy go so well together but if you think of america werewolf in london sure delicious i was at the cinema watching i was like wow this is i'm laughing and now i'm really scared it just gives you slap I'm like wow this is great cinematography and me I this is the bullseye we were trying to pick up Renfield well here it is here it's one of the bullseyes right here Jim would you like to introduce yourself to the group I'm the Prince of Belasia Some call me The Dark One uh there is the Lord of Death however to most I am Known simply as Bill's boss I am Dracula ok obviously we are dealing with more than just narcissism here we need to take a quick break but let's not go nowhere because we'll be back with more Nicholas Cage everyone stay it's alright foreigners.
