New Spyderco Knives at Blade Show 2021 - KnifeCenter.com

Jun 07, 2021
(Blade Show presented by KnifeCenter) Hello everyone, here comes David C. Andersen from the Blade Show. We are happy to be back. Happy to be here with Eric from Spyderco. How are you sir? How nice to see you again. Good to see you guys, you brought us some new and interesting things for us to look at. So let's get right into it. Yeah, I'm trying to get some new things out there trying to move forward. It is certainly a challenge in current times with the demand and challenge to produce, but still go ahead and create some new things.

So where do you want to start? If you want to start with some of the thin blue and red line, we've got some stuff here from the latest reveal. And then a couple of things that may be completely new to you. And a couple of things we're still waiting for to arrive. But we are very excited. Alright. Yeah, so I'm going to jump in with Thin Red Line, thin blue line. With these, naturally, we're starting to highlight, you know, our fallen officers, our fallen firefighters, both

knives

, a percentage of all the money goes to the foundations of the towers and the tunnels, the wild line, Wild Land, Foundation Fire Department, and that is for people who have fallen or been injured in action.

More Interesting Facts About,

And so we will make them in the durable Delica, the Rescue and some other models, we might even make some in the future. But they have a very thin red or blue line running down the back of the handle. And then inside the handle. There is also a touch of red. I mean, one of the things that excites us about this model is simply the ability to do it. Yeah, you know, the red on the blue inside really holds up, it's not just painted, it's going to be very durable. And then with the blue Backspacer and the red one, again, because it's a separate molded part and in the bolt-on construction because we have the ability to do that.

It was nice to do it. Yes, it comes with Vg 10

blade

s, we wanted to maintain a standard. Yes, keep the cost a little more reasonable, keep them so that everyone can have the opportunity to get them with Vg 10 with their corrosion resistance capabilities. hardness, edge retention, it's just a very well balanced that's been around for a long time. And I like the way the process worked here. You wouldn't think the inside of the handle would be too important. But it adds a certain visual element that makes you barely notice it. When you look straight down, you almost have to tilt it a little bit.

It's a The inside is a nice little feature of the blue wine: it's thin, you know, it's a thin line. Yes, that's true between us. And I love that it's another way to incorporate another color besides black into some things, yeah, very cool. Yes, I am very excited about the series and we continue to donate money to a good cause. A lot of hard-working people definitely fought for us and definitely kept going. And then moving forward we will continue to expand Wharncliffe. I know I told you about this. I'm a big fan of Wharncliffe. So we have the wharncliffe bug man that I spoke to about this in the past, we are very proud of our wharncliffe, then Chris tilts that flat edge and then with his teeth you know that Spyderco was one of the ancestors of razor

knives

. pocket serrations and so we continue to push the teeth and evolve them to a great nine cutting performance Yeah, I mean, especially on something like this size with the Wharncliffe man tape through a bunch of boxes with something like this is going to be very nice for such a small utility

blade

.
Yeah, you know what a lock I am. I know I'm a broken record here, but the lock is a very secure lock. You can take a tiny knife like that and go to town with it and feel really sick. Yes, he has a great outfit, brings good action and just fits perfectly. Yes. And enough control over these guys even for someone with slightly larger than average hands like me. I have a good grip on it. Yes, I always have. Yes. And yes, a little thicker, a little bigger. The bug man keeps pushing, you know, so the bug man wharncliffe.
Very pretty. Very pretty. The next thing will be, I guess, this is the first time a lot of people are seeing this. This is the lightweight boss. So this is just out of the box. We are a little behind on some of our productions. So, everyone has to have a little patience, the demand is there and with the pandemic to buy all the knives, you realize, right? So one of the things you'll start to see a little bit is some of these lightweight things, you know, the lightweight gives you the ability to make a handle faster, it gives you full three-dimensionality, it's very consistent.
I mean that light waves contribute a lot. Yes, I should know that whenever I think about lightweights, I often think about Blackie Collins, the late Blackie Collins Hall of Famer who really brought it to our industry. And he really gives us, as manufacturers, the ability to deliver high performance at a higher rate at a lower cost. Yes. And so, with the boss, everything that the other boss does will have the same thickness of blade, the same lighter walk, naturally. He has no linings. So we were able to put the inserts in the handle so you could actually have your four position clip with a very secure clip.
But it also brings with it low weight. Pretty good balance there too. Yeah, they, you know, they adapt, they finish the action, they do jumps, everything the US facilities are doing a fantastic job of pushing these things. Now I see this sheet here that says m four. Is this just because that's the sword you have? Yes, okay. It will not be m four standard ariga it will be s 30. v. Alright. But yeah, I'm sure over time people will have the option to get a different one because that's the first thing I saw when you put this out.
Yes. Yes. Cute. Nice observation. But yes, S30. V for support. Yes, very cool. Very cool. And when you are, we always talk about, you know, on the channel, I said injection molding will give you a much more sophisticated shape, for much less. And when it comes to you. It's that two-way texture. Just there. Yes, we are very proud of our moldings. When you learn more and more about molding, it's hard to do that kind of thing. The way the mold opens and the handle comes out. Will it come off the handle? Because the texture is very aggressive.
And then being able to have aggressively textured inserts, keep the piece flat and have it work like we can? Yes, we are very proud of our lightweight capabilities. Very cool. Really cool. So, again, let's abandon that line. This one is big enough. I honestly think the blade is four inches, but I don't have it in that spec, but it will give you a little more. We will do this every time. We're filming the video at KnifeCenter and I pull out my little ruler to measure something that Thomas says he can have a drink later. However, less than four inches.
And yes, that's what happens these days. If we say it's four inches, we want to be there. Yes, the last or a hair below like you did, yes, yes. You don't want someone to take it and get in trouble. Yes, more and more, we're really paying attention to those links. And you know, with the light weight that we can, we can bring a little more production to the market. This will be the assault version and will also come with a molded handle. And for your daily tasks, if you're looking for a slightly larger knife, big enough for movie FX, I'm not sure we have the name yet.
It's always been one of those really nice EDCs, with fixed blades, even the smallest one, like you have that full grip to push some things. That extra length will be, you know, the cherry on top of that. And again we talk about the sophisticated shape of the handle. We don't just get the texture there. We have real waves on this handle, which I've always appreciated. Yeah, you know, my dad designed that one. I still think he's a fantastic designer, his hands tend to fit well. So yes, he did a lot of 3D work and is proud of his work.
Yes. And a big part of the reason we

show

them is that we're starting to

show

them a sword, even though they're not in a reveal. They're coming down the pipeline and we're trying to finish them off. Very cool. You guys are very cool. It will probably come out yellow, but we'll see. Yes, so lc 200 n LC200N. No, this will be H1 H1. Well. Very pretty. Very cool knife. However, speaking of lc 200 n, we have the following. Yes. Big fan GM. This is the subway bowie designed by Fred Perrin, a great admirer of Fred Perron.
One of the things Fred is known for is that strain on his index finger and a hole in his index finger. If you look up Fred's pairing, you will see a hole in his index finger and many of the designs on him. And we've included it in some of our designs, like the Swick. So this is going to be a nice buoy, you know, Fred, parent buoy style, it's going to be LC 210 with molded handles, so the handle isn't going anywhere, it's going to come with a kydex sheath, it's incredibly lightweight. and salted, so it will not rust in transportation, carry it if you want and you can take it out when you need to use it.
Very convenient to be very pretty, and it has the same shape as in street movies, only yes, reduced. And Fred again, Fred did that and you know, you're talking about a guy who has at least 30 years of knife making knowledge and I know, and he walks up to a grinder and does it by hand and you try to remake it to he. And yes, he did all the 3D on it. It will surely be a very useful little piece. Yes, I think it's a great addition to Fred's father's name in the line. Yes, it really suits him too.
If you go to his table and start looking at a lot of his knives. He makes a lot of small knives. Yeah, he's not a guy who likes big knives. So yes, a perfect complement to a very beautiful piece. Very nice piece. The next one, people saw it, you know, they come to the booth to see it. We're still trying to finish them. Our micarta gear was paramilitary because this one has full linings so it will be a bit stiffer feeling in the hand, maybe even though the pair of shoes always felt ridged. So we really skeletonized the liner to try to get the weight as close to it as possible, but because the micarta is not as stiff as the G 10.
We had to use the really thin edges where the nine were. The lining would fit less. Yeah, you know, you might have a little loop in the micarta, you know, the thin edges might break a little bit. And yes, we move on to the full coating. So you get that complete string. And I have a friend of mine, especially he was a little worried about it, but if he's watching, don't worry. He feels, he feels. You know, exactly how you would realistically expect, how I would expect a pair to feel even though you have that full lining there.
Yeah, it's fun to wear, you know? And with the micarta it gives you all those great attributes that that micarta does, that different color when you feel the handle? It is also an open construction. Therefore, it will be easy to clean and keep the weight down. Yes Yes. And again, this is a team where we're very excited about the Blade, not the S 30.V, so he doesn't even have one right now, guys. Yeah, yeah, when you start getting close to some of these, you know, we put different blades in and get to the show, but when you get to production, yeah, it's going to be meaner.
I love the finish. It's like the perfect kind of matte finish you'd want on a micarta like this. Yeah, I mean, I'm going to point it out. You'll see some machining lines here. That shouldn't be there in production. Well. So yeah, you know, it's a prototype, still the rear, you can't even see the machining lines. Yes. So yes, yes, the production will be crisp and clean. And people, you know, it's the right kind of color, people can dye it if they want to create their own cool colors. Very pretty. Yes. Very excited. The market seems excited, I would say so.
Then the next one is the K 390. Stretch that I was going to show. I know I've talked to you about it again, I know I keep saying this. But k 390 is just a great student. Just cut and cut. It is very difficult. It's great. And it's corrosion resistance for what you get in this package. And you know, we keep pushing K up to 90. It's just a wonderful steel. And the first full production straight spine. Yes Yes. The other was ivory. Yeah, I love that one too. I missed this. This one of these is probably my future, I would say.
You know, it's funny, the straight spine, to me it's all appearance. Yeah, you know, it's not really much about performance, but Spyderco is about performance. But you know, what's mine, to a lot of people it looks like a more traditional Spyderco. It does, it does, instead of the new one, I've always said that, you know, the traditional blade is like your guys' Buck 110, you know, your guys hold on to you, and that, but not this. align it more with your DNA a little more. Either one will be a great carry. And you know, I, you know, Spyderco has a double distal taper, so it tapers this way and that way.
And so that when you go to cut or penetrate, it just cuts, fantastic. And then you know that really continues to highlight what Spyderco likes to do, and it's a little bit of a different cut from the traditional strap.Absolutely, I'm really looking forward to that one. And then the last one I brought to show you was light resilience. We continue to take the tenacious family of lines, so to speak, and push them toward lightweight; I'm told they're actually not much lighter. Take a GFN and a light one, because it is a little lighter. And we'll certainly continue to keep that in mind when we name these things.
But yes, we wanted to make the molded handle that gives you all the attributes that I talked about earlier in terms of molding and greater production capacity. We are also going to make an S 35 vn with them. And so, you know, we drive with the blue handle, we've been working with this facility for a long time. And we have great confidence in their ability to bring those higher quality steels, proper heat treatment and proper manufacturing to the market. You know, you might buy some of these exotic steels from other countries or factories and how well they process them.
A big difference is harder to notice here, right? So, you know, we'll get some lightweight 30V knives out of China and bring a little more value to that market. One of the best things that I've always liked about the whole tenacious family as well is that, you know, this area here has the advantage that it goes all the way to the handle and it has a finger guard, but it's soft. tilted, you can reach right behind the edge, which is hard to do and a lot of folders come out. It's such an evolved design, it really is and it's those little things that highlight that design, you know, that little cutout, so it's easier or the little you know, so you can get to the thumb hole a little bit easier .
The way the back hooks for the hook for a pole cut or even if you're fully back you can start putting some Pinkie on it. Yes you know you can really reach out and yes you know it's a very evolved design and the more you look at knives the more you appreciate a design like this and especially on the budget side of things that are lighter. I mean even the G 10s are very affordable. It surely requires a lot of thought and care in the design for the money you are spending. And you know, at Spyderco we produce knives in many places, Italy, China, the United States.
And today it is a topic of conversation about Chinese knives. And, you know, for us, we continue to work with the factories that we've worked with for a long time, it goes far beyond politics and borders, we make good knives together. And then we try to achieve a balance in our general line. So we will continue to work with many of those factories there to produce high value knives, but probably not over the top. You know, we're still growing our Japanese and American line, another line just acquired more American manufacturing, just to catch up. Yes, we are trying to solve it.
No, I know, there's some really interesting stuff here. I don't know if I had to pick a favorite right now. I'm a fixed leaf guy. So you know, it's probably this guy. Thomas could have guessed it. Yes, I am very excited about what the factory can produce these days. They're, you know, they're, they're just getting it out the door. And, you know, we assemble it, package it, and take it off the market these days and, over time, hopefully we'll be able to start putting more new things on the market. But these days, we're just chugging along to keep up.
Yes. It's a good problem, hopefully. Excellent. Well, Eric, thank you very much for taking the time. Thank you so much. Show us this sword show, baby. It's We are here. We are having fun. Make sure everyone checks out the links in the description. We already have some of these things available for pre-order. Of course, not the newly revealed things. We'll be sure to leave a link to all of that below. And keep following us for more Blade Show coverage. Thank you. Thank my Lord.
