NEW 455 Super Duty Trans Am | The Story Behind The DesignFeb 27, 2020
I think the Trans Am is possibly the most recognizable American muscle car ever and each of us lives a little bit abandoned or a little bit outlawed, so in 1977 you have a nation watching the gang race through the silver screen bold and fearless a new generation of car lovers is born and my brother and I are right there with him I was 19 when I got my first Trans Am it became a part of who I was so I never would have thought I was 16 kid watching that movie that one day might be part of an effort to preserve an international brand like Trans Am the Super Duty was the car that wasn't supposed to happen and the list of why is long Todd said well I was really thinking in the
dutyI hadn't thought about the Super Duty the Super Duty was a very iconic car there were a lot of restrictions on cars in '74 if you're into muscle cars it was a tough year but still the Super Duty was like wow so you heard it you're like wow ok so you drove it and all of a sudden it's the complete package so let's talk about what a Super Duty is.
The Super Duty has a really big engine, a really big and dangerous engine, but the 2017 Super Duty we have a 455 that puts out tremendous amounts of power. I had to because that's Super Duty Brendan, the absolute driving force behind taking power to that level and making over a thousand horsepower and over a thousand pound-feet of torque. about wasting tires in third gear fourth gear and as many gears as you have the courage to go through a thousand horsepower car that was also drivable which is higher I used some of my contacts in the NASCAR racing world and they came back and said Paul we can do this Paul knew the person who can make this happen Joey Arrington a legendary NASCAR engine builder in Charlotte Joey Harrington was born in NASCAR his father friend Arrington car number 67 is a legend d it means Joey grew up around the masters NASCAR engine builders, it's only natural that we would choose him to help build this new clown.
Do a lot of PR in the media for a lot of different manufacturers. the racetracks are throwing them off as such, but all I can tell you is getting the chance to drive that new Super Duty is amazing, not just for the power, but also for the torque curve, the way the power and the way the car handles when i'm really going to whip and driving that thing this car takes a back seat to nobody sorry girl is derived from solid plate steel crankshaft is a forged 4340 the rods are made from a m300 material which is pretty much the only place you'll find that kind of material, any moore racing application, it's truly joeys, he produced original engine
designs and setups for top international racing teams and suppliers, i've been around cars all my life, I mean, we know. to me really cool stuff, this is by far the best thing i've ever done.
We're taking a 376 cubic inch engine out of a Chevrolet car and turning it into a 455 cubic inch just a monster engine not only We'll come out with a Super Duty but it'll have a 455 bay and it'll be a Super Duty like no other Another one before the LT1 engine block has the original casting number, but that's the only thing left stock on the block, the crank. the cam the pistons the connecting rods the bearings the valve springs the studs everything has been changed on the engine it's really just a shell with a NASCAR racing engine inside go to Jersey they pump you gas even if they put 91 than the cars at a thousand They run out it's custom -made for us extremely high flow exhaust a custom built engine just replaceable blood and the lucky few to have this engine will be among a very very elite club not only in terms of power but in terms of daily driver quality real reliable power th thousand horsepower car there are a few people in the world who can say they happen and you really have to think what are we doing anyway we are building cars that are incredibly powerful let's make it incredibly light and use the technology that is available on
supercars and take it to Trans Am Carbon Fiber Hoods Covering Fiber Fender Fascias Di visors Diffusers Deck lids Spoilers from the fiber roof lining to the carbon fiber hatches Carbon fiber roof linings, so again we're increasing strength, reducing weight, and building something that's going to be beautiful for a long time. we know we want to give the best car possible down to the nuts and bolts that make carbon fiber an easy choice and everything else is carbon fiber Wow it's probably not carbon fiber you know they both start with bravery, those are the new Michelin Pilot Super Sport fluorescence those are five seconds faster that's the best rental we could put on the car we've switched to a three piece wheel which is a total evolution of t The old snowflake is going to be a lighter and stronger wheel along with Michelin tires capable of handling a thousand horsepower that we have to offer you the brakes have been upgraded with Brembo we have done all the suspension a huge improvement over what you would get if you just had a Camaro the Trans Am stops much better goes much faster weighs much less Thomas is a very creative visionary and has taken his ideas and is able to cultivate them in this beautiful piece of orange l or live it breathe it when you look at it the car has to say something from every angle because the original car made it it's American it's not just cars there's more than just the curves of a concept there's a society behind whatever you're trying to
designthere is a culture all Tom's walks by the computer for the last five months have just stopped and he gasps.
I said what we're going to build is our new Trans Am the Super Duty is by far the most ambitious build we've come across. ertaken Tom works until he can't we'll find him on a floor somewhere in the server room sleeping in bubble wrap and hook him up in the morning light the sand in his eyes have some coffee and get back to work one of the elements Key to getting these cars from concept to rolling on the road is the renderings. I studied Allen's work before Super Duty. Each time they put it in my desk drawers in this really unique style.
Today's drawing is also a CAD file that looks like a photograph it's this weird trifecta of perfect art and design so that we can get the artwork out of it directly into a partner. I am from a town called mo in sweden north of sweden i have been working for five years with Glastron boats designing a whole series for them and many car magazines many custom builders all over the world I did a design for Jay Leno he is building an old volvo but with two brand new racing parts he didn't design the whole car for them and polestar that's one more ball ion racing division and now i'm elated i have a master rendering artist on my bo project who is in sweden and Tom who is in Florida talked day and night no one would have a beer and then coffee illustrated and back and forth of course the representations I love those cars though the old Trans Am since I was young so this was very exciting, heart rate went up because of this incredible success we had with the band's entry into the Burt Reynolds challenge. that heritage in that DNA in this new design but still making it new, the really important thing was to have the signature Trans Am details, which is the front end with the grille and the rear end with the lights that resemble something from '77 and In the eighth grade the original body features of the 74 Super Duty didn't really lend themselves well to the direction we needed to keep the Bandit car going.
We had four or five versions of the round, but this is the one that was the best. ng then it has curves in places that make the car stand before you standing still and the hood is new on this car it's longer in the front and it follows the curvature in a very nice way but then it has aggressive lines and angles and almost a fit on it well it's going to be wide and it's got to look muscular we need a lot of cooling on this car it had to have those areas of openings do it in a way that even if you didn't know what a stock Super Duty was you were going to hit the same way now it brought tears to my eyes my friend i have three of these cars i came here for a few drinks and to look at the Trans Am thank you i appreciate the design that tom and beau came up with far exceeded my expectations of what What I envisioned as I sat down was Tom first bringing together what I feel is the most elite talent unified on this design as we started putting parts back on a bare chassis to make a Super Duty Trans Am no h oh nothing there goes through nine seasons a and over 300 changed parts Wow the interior took that as much as possible we do everything we do the seats we do the carpet we do the door panels have the gauges redone graphic or painted a Mano we are not only using the best paint available but have the best booth to spray it so the paint jobs are several times better than a factory paint job.
This mm mm 48lb actually made the top stronger and lighter and also gave the back with sheer panels so you can see the sky. the mutual challenge was where is the limit how far can we take it
