My View of the Bruins Historic Regular Season
Apr 13, 2023welcome back so in honor of the boston
bruins
who set the records they hold i thought i was abruins
fan wearing my cam neely cam nelly jersey or sweater whatever you want to call it i thought why not talk about the bruins and why that. I've tempered my expectations and there's been questions about why he's not as excited whether he's a Bruins fan or not, why he's not excited because I feel like a fan of the prince I've seen. this story before now this is different this is 133 points it's an all time record and there's still a game left where they can push that record even further you know reach 135 points and 65 wins and all of that is great but next monday all restarts we have the best of seven series we still don't know who will play boston it could be the islanders it could be florida it could be pittsburgh in terms of matchups with boston huh i think all three teams would form their own challenges i think with pittsburgh you have to look the Crosby Milken effect in the playoffs.Pittsburgh hasn't been out of the first round in a while either, so you also have the hunger argument. being a wild card team and they're going to have something to prove come time off, they might be better built for the playoffs this year than they have been in previous
season
s and then with the Islanders, you have the impact of Sorokin, the fact that Sorokin could absolutely steal one of the first two games in Boston which then puts everything in his ear because then you have to go to New York to play the Islanders on UBS which is going to be loud so yeah I think with all three series should Boston win them yeah but the idea of oh they're definitely going to win it and they're going to crush everyone um you know I found a post on my own facebook from 2014 as of today how excited I was to Boston won the President's Trophy. and how excited he was about a possible Stanley Cup and that was coming from 2013.They had gone all the way and in 2011 they had won the Stanley Cup so he was still riding that wave of very, very high optimism when he got to the Boston Bruins and they were going to have ICE home advantage during the playoffs they should be able to do this however when we look at their playoff record finishing first doesn't necessarily mean a lot is going to happen in their favor now this is their fourth time not won the president's trophy most recent 2019-2020 uh they lost in the second round against Tampa Bay in 2020. uh 2013 2014 as mentioned the president's trophy they lost in the second round against Montreal 2011-2012 they won their division uh they lost in the first round against Washington, that one was tough.
I remember that series because I had been so worried going in, I thought you knew Boston won the cup and back to back is hard to do in Washington. that could be tough and sure enough, they knocked out Boston 2010 2011, they won the Stanley Cup, they also won the division that year and uh, Vancouver fell victim to the Boston Bruins in the finals that year. for Vancouver in that Stanley Cup final it was difficult 2008 2009 they won their division that year they lost in the second round which was against Carolina yes then Carolina in one of their runs to the conference finals which was a rule for a long time with Carolina you you lost the playoffs or at least you're going to the conference finals there didn't seem to be an intermission between 2003 and 2004 uh they lost in the first round when they won the division that year against montreal 2001 2002 they win their division they lost in the first round against Montreal that's why when people say I don't know why they say Boston Montreal is a bad matchup for Boston I realize it's been a while since I've done the
historic
al videos it might be time to bring some from the backs i have seen montreal teams knock out boston teams a lot so 92-93 in the first round they get knocked out even though they won the division that year by buffalo buffalo ran quite a bit after that but really you know again Boston that was one of those there they won the division things were looking good keep in mind in '91 and '92 they lost in the conference final so I was excited in '93 and then they went down 90-91 they won the division they lost in. the conference finals against pittsburgh the last time this guy bragged about boston was 1991. and i mean he bragged that he was going to win the cup it's going to happen it's time and uh no uh 89.90 they won the trophy from the president that year they lost to the Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final and once that final started it was clear the Oilers were going to win it and they did it just like they had two years earlier against the Boston Bruins 83-84 Boston win their division they lose in the first round against Montreal because Montreal Boston is a bad matchup for Boston uh 82-83 which is one of the first years I watched hockey they won their division they lost in the conference final against the New York Islanders too they were first in the National Hockey League we didn't have a president's trophy at the time so this is the fifth time since I started watching hockey that Boston will have finished first in the NHL and in the previous four they haven't won a championship they have a Stanley Cup final, a conference final and most recently two second round outings and again I know the point count is ridiculous and it's been a lot of fun to watch but it resets to zero the Monday actually Saturday resets to zero really and that's the trick now 76.77 the Montreal Canadiens won that Stanley Cup they had the 132 points they won against Boston in four I'm not I wish I was making this up they had nine Hall of Famers Fame nine Hall of Famers on the Montreal team so when people talk about the Haves and how good that team was, but by today's standards with a salary cap, there's no way to keep that team together 95-96 Detroit Red Wings 131 points they lost in the conference finals and six against the Colorado Avalanche that year was a great series too and then of course they won the championship a couple of years after 77-78 Montreal Canadiens had 129 points they won this Stanley Cup in six against Boston so I'm very thankful that Montreal missed the playoffs this year because yeah yeah 129 points and they beat Boston in the Cup final uh so uh 2018-2019 most recent on the board isn't called Boston Tampa Bay the screws 128 points uh of course they lost in the first round and it was a sweep at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets and going into that series I said Columbus is dead.It was a joke, but it kind of went viral and ended up in a video of the Columbus Blue Jackets promoting their second-round matchup because that was the consensus. Nobody was taking Columbus to defeat Tampa Tampa. it was a machine 62 wins 128 points no one knocked them out in the first round and then they did and they not only got knocked out by Columbus but they were coached by Columbus uh it was a series I don't even know how close that was to Tampa Bay I just didn't seem like they were into it uh 75-76 the Habs 127 points to them so there you go 75 76 77 76 77 and 77.78 three of the top five below Boston so three of the top six overall Montreal won the Stanley Cup that year in the Forest trade over Philly so there are a couple of ways to look at this of the top six teams and points of all time in one
season
three of them won the Stanley Cup but it was all Montreal and Montreal and The playoffs they faced in the mid 70's are a little different than what a team faces now, one team's ability to neutralize another is much stronger than it was in the 70's or 80's.I wonder if the 80's coaches and teams in the 80s have had the kind of video surveillance that you have of players now where everything they do on the ice you have video of that, uh, how would that have affected scoring in the league, how would that have affected scoring as well the records and if that might have leveled the playing field a bit having all that information that we just didn't have back then huh 2022 2023 has been a great year for Boston now their power play I've heard concerns about they are currently 11 in overall on power play now the last time they won the Stanley Cup in 2011 there wasn't much of a power play to speak of with Boston so I'm not really worried about the power play because five on five and especially four on four is pretty good huh her penalty is number one thats important uh her shots against her in 8th 8th per game according to NHL stats her currently 8th in shots against per game uh stance hits 60 goals is second only to Conor McDavid and then there's a remarkable season that all of Mark has had that kind of reminds me of Pete Peters with Andy mode but more Pete Peters than any Moog and then of course you have two holm oaks in that conversation as well as a doorman , he had some really good seasons but for omark, he has a 1.89 goals against average that's gustafson's first number two at 2.05 in minnesota uh sure percentage 938 for everyone mark that's number one number two is Gustafson again is number two with a 933 and all 40 wins for ulmark the fastest goalie to 40 wins took the fewest starts in league history uh georgiev is number two in the league with 38 so they have a mark that can be playing too much and that's what I think is important they've played enough that omark is well rested and in pretty good shape for the playoffs but he doesn't really have a playoff resume we don't know how things are going to go in a best-of-seven series and if a team in, say, game two or game three could say, wait a minute, it's a little weak on the blocking side right now maybe we're going on the blocking side. high glove is letting those on a team be able to figure out a goaltender over a seven game series and he can really turn things around quickly it's something he focused a lot on with Calgary vs.
Evanson Evanson just knows how to beat Markstrom properly and that was a major problem and definitely played a part in eliminating Calgary, while Markstrom had a really strong
regular
season in the playoffs, things were a little different, so it's not a case of me downplaying my own enthusiasm , it's just a case of me toning down expectations, you know, it's Jim Montgomery's first year in Boston and after the way he came out of Dallas the way he did, I think it's great that he's got this Redemption art going, I think which is been fantastic we look at recent playoff history last year they lost in the first round against Carolina and seven the year before they lost in six in the second round against the Islanders 2020 they lost in the second round against Tampa and five uh 2019 per course they made it all the way to the stanley cup final they lost in seven to st louis y'all were this close to the happy dance on screen 2018 uh they lost in the second round again to tampa again in five games and 2017 they lost in the first round in six against Ottawa 2015 and 2016 the previous two years they didn't make the playoffs so for Boston it looks like this could be their best chance and I think it's their best chance to win a potential championship this could be the last hurray for Bergeron. for crazy people too and there's definitely something big, something big that feels about this season anyway, even if Boston hadn't been first, but again for me, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll temper that expectation because there are other teams in the league that they're actually playing Well, and in a seven-game series, we never know that now having ICE at home during the playoffs should be a huge benefit, especially since Boston has been great at home all year, but it doesn't necessarily translate to either. the playoffs, so I'm optimistic on some level for sure. um, when I look at the matchups, the potential first round matchups, I don't see a team that I think should be able to knock them out, but I say I should be able to because I've watched enough hockey to know there's no sure thing getting all those. points is not a sure thing getting all those wins is still not a sure thing and even being number one in a lot of statistical categories I've done videos before about Trophy winners and the fact that very often Stanley Cup champions don't they have a lot of trophy winners aside from you know the trophy cup and smythe scam so there's something in there too but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts in the comments section below. What do you expect from Boston in the playoffs do you expect a first round exit do you expect them to go all the way do you expect a Stanley Cup huh and I've seen that the more points they get the more I start to see that yeah they're going to go out in the first round that it's absolutely possible i don't think it will happen but then again being here as long as i've been and it doesn't feel like four years ago we saw the bolts lose the first round but it's been four years and last year's playoffs were relatively easy to predict and it seems like they were almost too easy to predict, so this year could be all over the place, we could see a lot of surprises and we deserve them, don't we? but let me know your thoughts in the comment section atbelow as always don't forget to like and subscribe if you're browsing you just found this video thank you so much for watching for all your support.
I'll talk. to you again soon
