My Favorite Electronic Cymbals - Top 5 HiHats/Ride/Crash/China/Effect Cymbals

May 31, 2021
Hello, welcome back to 65 Drums, my name is Justin today. I want to make a video about my

favorite

electronic

cymbals

. I get a lot of people emailing me with questions about this kind of thing. I bought this headphone package or how to convert my acoustic set to

electronic

. and I need the diagonal cymbal set, so today I thought I would make a video about my

favorite

electronic

cymbals

. The first thing I want to cover is a whole debate between metal electronic cymbals and rubber electronic cymbals, in my personal opinion, I like it. rubber cymbals more because one of the big selling points of electronic drums is the fact that they have low volume and that goes away if you buy metal electronic cymbals, they look amazing and feel great while you play them. because you're actually hitting pieces of metal, but the problem for me is that they have a volume sacrifice.

I prefer to use rubber cymbals, so that's what I'm going to cover for most of this video, okay, but for the people. There are those who are still really interested in metal electronic cymbals. If I had to choose between the different types on the market, I would run out and buy the low-volume electronic cymbals with triggers, those that are like the Zildjian L 80 that are full of holes, the reason why I prefer those electronic cymbals with metal is the fact that they still retain flexibility when you hit them, your stick sinks into them a little and it's not like hitting a concrete block, which I don't really like.

More Interesting Facts About,

my favorite electronic cymbals top 5 hihats ride crash china effect cymbals...

A big part about solid metal electronic cymbals is the fact that they have a lot of layers, for example if you buy some field hi-hats you have the top acoustic cymbal and then you have a big piece of rubber underneath and then you have another solid cymbal. There's a sheet of metal underneath so it's a three-ply cymbal and that makes it even heavier than a normal acoustic cymbal so it looks fantastic and it's nice to be able to play on a metal surface but it's not really It arches when you hit it. there's no place for it and that's why I prefer low volume fired cymbals when it comes to buying electronic metal cymbals, but now let's move on to the actual part of the video where I talk about my favorite cymbals.

I'll break it down into categories. so my favorite cup cymbals, my favorite

ride

cymbals, favorite

crash

cymbals and then my favorite

effect

type cymbals, okay let's get started, here are my top 5 favorite cup cymbals right now, this seems like a good change in the future, but this is what I like most currently. and number 5 I have the 12 inch ATV I and number four I have the role in Beach 11s and number three I have the role in BH tens and number two I have the ATV ath 14s and then number one I have the role in VH 13.

Here's why I ranked them the way I started at the bottom of the list. I think they are all awesome, but I ranked the twelve inch ATVs. at the bottom because of the price it is four hundred and twenty one dollars and in that price range I could also spend a little more money and go for the ATV in ten inch variants and also it is very difficult for me to even buy it. These, if I go to a battery center, I can't seem to find them. I can't find them in Sweetwater. I can't find them at Sam Ash or Guitar Center.
I can only buy them from one store in Europe and that is why I have ranked them at the bottom of the list even though they are excellent. I would just go and buy the 14-inch variant and move up to the number four spot. We have the excellent roll-on VH 11. I actually like this one a little more than the VH ten for a couple of reasons number one, the bottom hi-hat controller has this chunk of metal here the VH 10 doesn't so this is it. makes it feel a little more resistant. I also like the fact that it is easier to repair a vh 11 because it is much easier to take it apart.
I couldn't take apart a VH 10 to fix it and save my life. In the meantime, it's just a couple of screws on the BH 11. I actually made a video about it, so for those reasons I actually like the vh 11 a little more, but do I like it $100 more than the beats 10? ? No, they don't actually work pretty much the same while you play them as far as opening and closing triggering and all that, except for the vh 11. It's amazing, it's been on a lot of highly respected drum sets and that's why it's in my top 5 I guess Roland will eventually remove the love for BH, but that's just a guess I have at this point.
Currently it is still there and I would like to enter. 25kv It's the best $300 pair of hi-hats you can buy in electronic drums. industry but also another thing it has going for it is the fact that it's lighter when I was at the presentation of the TD 17 drum line, they were talking about how they actually designed it to be a little thinner, a little more lightweight and that way it doesn't weigh down the hi-hat spring as much when you put it on the stand, so for those reasons I think the beach tent is great for the price and the way it's made in general tracking when you're playing.
It's a very, very fun set of top hats, now I move on to my number two spot. I have the ATV ath fourteen. These are great and quick disclaimers, although the ATV company gave them to me so I didn't pay for them. There might be some personal biases here, but I still really like them. I play them literally every day and I think they work very well. Here's a very quick breakdown of what it's good at and some of the flaws it has. Number one. This thing is cool because it's 14 inches overall width, you'll notice a difference jumping back and forth between a vh 10 and the ATV hi-hats because the size difference just feels a little more at home for someone who grew up playing drums acoustics, another thing I What I like is the fact that it triggers in 360.
We all know that hi-hats tend to rotate on an acoustic hi-hat stand and it doesn't matter with these ATV hi-hats because they have a 360 trigger. Another really interesting thing about these trebles. The good thing is that they have a third zone, you'll probably never use it, but it's good to know that if you took out all the different mounting hardware and put them on a cymbal stand, this could easily become a 14 inch three zone

ride

cymbal . If you needed it to do that at some point, it's also nice that there are no moving parts here, it uses an electronic eye, so that might help it last a little longer than top hats that have some kind of moving piston inside the controller.
Now, as far as cons go, there are a couple. The first is that because it uses an electronic eye, it needs to be plugged into the wall and we all know that electronic batteries already have enough cables and there is one more that needs to be plugged in. one wall just sucks, another thing is that the bottom piece is just a plastic casing. I feel like they should have covered it with rubber or just something to make it feel a little more premium, it's well built but I feel like it should look a little better and ultimately it's still expensive five hundred and seventy dollars it's a lot cheaper than the BH 13 but Five hundred and seventy dollars is still five hundred and seventy dollars, but all the disadvantages aside, I really like these top hats, I think they are excellent.
Let's move on to my top pick, which is the rolling 13 beads. Now these have been available for quite some time. I think they first appeared on the 30 KB rolling TV so you can buy it in two configurations, you can buy the one with that metallic silver finish or you can buy the matte black version which is on the Roland t250 kvx and TD 50k batteries , so yes, you can buy it in two different colors and it responds wonderfully. I won't try to justify the price. tag here seven hundred and seventy dollars is really expensive it's like buying two pairs they're rolling bead tents okay so they're really really expensive every time I forget why I like the hi-hat so much.
I sit down and play a TD 50 KB , it's just a great pair of tall hats, I personally don't have one. Plan on buying them or Rolen beats out their gear because of that ridiculous price, but they're still my favorite every time I get a chance to sit down and use them, okay, so let's move on to cymbal assembly. Here are my 5 favorite electronic attractions, the first one. It's just a recognition of EF's grade. I really like this 20 inch saucer they made. I think it's the first rubber electronic cymbal of that size, but I can't place it in the top five right now because it's new.
I was probably playing a prototype and it's also light gray, but it's cool to see different drum companies trying to make bigger and bigger electronic cymbals, so I wanted to thank them for that, but moving on to the actual list at number four that I've got. the 16-inch ATV ride saucer and the number three. I have the paper in CY 16 r/t and number two. I have the 18 inch ATV ride cymbal and the number 1. I have the roll and CY 18 dr like many. Of you guys, I remember when the biggest ride saucer you could buy was like 15 inches wide or something like that.
Now we have legitimately sigh electronic ride cymbals that are made of rubber and are great to see, so let's go down the list and talk about why I have ranked them the way I have the 16-inch ATV ride cymbal at number 4. This is an excellent stroller dish. I really like it, the reason I have it at the bottom of the list is mainly for price. I love the fact that it is a very slim symbol, it will work with most modules. I like the fact that it has 360 degree triggering, it has a clean look, but it's $500 for a 16 inch ride cymbal.
I think it's too much, although it's still excellent. and that's why it's on my top list third. I got the part in CY 16 RT, this one is significantly cheaper, it's the same size as the 16 inch ATV, but it's $350 versus 5 bucks. What I like about this new paper and symbol and it is the newest symbol on the list is the fact that it is very very thin and flexible, you can take it with your bare hands and flex it, it is really very nice. I think Roland said it was like 40% thinner than some of his older symbols and it works great.
I had a chance to play it on a BB 5:06 drum kit and I really like it, so moving on to my second pick, we have the 18 inch ATV ride cymbal. I bought the dish about a year ago. a year ago and I have loved it since they replaced a paper on the CY 15 R that I had on the drums and it looked good on a TD 30 K, but when I was using that cy 15 on a large acoustic size electronic drum kit I set it up , I just looked at one place, it seemed strange, you guys talked about it in the comments and I listened and said, "Okay, I'll go buy a bigger one, so I bought the ATV and I've loved it ever since." This is a fantastic cymbal that shoots beautifully.
This is what it does well. It is a very thin dish. It has 360 degree shooting and will work with most modules available. There are no three proprietary modules that it works with. It will work with an ELISA. strike will work with almost any type of Roland module ever made will work with two snare will work with the Pearl copycat will work with ATV modules really the only drawback I can think of is the $550 price tag it's very very expensive so yeah it's the cymbal Most expensive ride on this list Overall, the ride cymbal is fantastic and I would recommend it to almost everyone.
Okay, let's move on to my final choice. This is my number one favorite ride cymbal in the industry right now and that. is the role in CY 18 this is your digital ride saucer the reason I like it so much is that it does a lot of things well. I like the fact that it's very slim like the ATV and it's actually cheaper almost a hundred dollars. It's four hundred and seventy dollars. I like the fact that you only have to use one cable. I really like the rubber texture. I like how sensitive the bail is and just the full symbol, of course it only activates the front half, but it works.
The cymbals don't really spin much so overall it doesn't matter, it just fires incredibly well, it's very very sensitive, it's very very thin, it's cheaper than the ATV and you can also silence it by pressing a rim or just resting it. in your hand on the top of the saucer feel the static electricity in your hand. I love this cymbal, it's fun every time I play it and I love how sensitive this symbol is and for all that it is my number one choice as far as electronic symbols on the right are concerned, as far as disadvantages, although it does have some notable.
Number one, it's still expensive. Just because it's cheaper than a TV doesn't mean it's not expensive per se, it is expensive. It increases by about four hundred and seventy dollars. Also because you are using a USB cable that means it will only work right now withthe T d50 module and the T V 27, so if any of those modules run out and you buy this one, otherwise you won't even be able to use it even if the second drawback is the fact that if the cable breaks you can't just replace it. a quarter-inch wire and call it a day.
I think you'll probably end up mailing it in to get it fixed. you, so it's a major disadvantage that the cable is literally connected to the symbol itself and if something goes wrong with that there's no easy replacement, but negatives aside, it's absolutely my favorite electronic cymbal. I think it's fantastic. I've always had it. great moment while playing it by the way in case you hadn't seen this video yet, I made a very in depth video versus between the roll and the CY 18 and also the right saucer of an 18 inch TV. I play them side by side with a TV 30 module and a TV 50 module. the pros and cons, if you want to go deeper into this topic, I also did a versus video between the roland vh 10 and the vh 11, okay let's move on to the next category, okay, so I'm not going to shake my head at

crash

cymbals.
To be honest, I spend a lot of time in this category because it's basically the ride cymbal category, but you don't need all three zones, but if I had to pick some crash cymbals right off the top of my head, I would buy the Roland Cy 16 RT. and then the four 10 inch variants for the battery, maybe a roland cy 15 and then a couple of CY 16s, something like that. I like how flexible those shock levels are, it's not in your face, it's not crazy, but it's nice. having that little edge of a thinner symbol that also has some give to it and that's why I'm going to put them a little bit above some of the other options that are on the market so the moving heads from the splash cymbal category I feel like this is the owner of a TV because it is the only company that makes premium dishes.
It may be a funny phrase, but there are actually many companies that make small electronic cymbals, but they tend to be on your cheap drum set. You know your sets, like the three hundred dollar ones, the five hundred dollar ones, the eight hundred dollar ones, and they're small just because they're trying to save money, not because they decided to make something premium and small at the same time. Atetv currently has to release cymbals, one 10 inch and one 12 inch and as far as I know they are both three zone cymbals so if you ever wanted a 10 inch splash cymbal with bells you now have one When it comes to Chinese dishes, there really aren't many options available off the top of my head.
I can think of a trigger ax and then there is also a television with its 17-inch Chinese saucer that I bought the opportunity to play and I really like it. If I ever bought one, I'd make it a symbol of its own because I discovered that the line between where I thought the rim and arch would be and where it actually is is long enough for gringos to get a little confusing, so I'd basically make it a saucer. Chinese own with a certain sound and I really like it, it's good to have, it just adds flavor to your drums.
I realize that some people think that having a Chinese cymbal or an

effect

s cymbal doesn't really matter and in the grand scheme of things that an electronic drum kit is, technically it doesn't matter, but if it really didn't matter, we would still use the triangle pads to saucer. pads but for some reason we have decided that the circular rubber pads are better because it just makes sense in our head even though it doesn't make sense in real life and finally, shaking our heads from the last category we have the ozone style crash cymbals basically a symbol of effect that has big holes cut out with an acoustic cymbal that would give it a faster attack when it comes to electronic symbols that just helps you differentiate it and makes your drums look a little more interesting.
I really like this one from ATV and again I think they own this category. I think there might be another company I've seen do something like this. I think they were from Argentina or something, but I didn't get a chance to play that dish, so in my opinion. I like the ATV because it's the only one I've touched. Let's talk about the coolest electronic cymbals ever made. As for the rubber cymbals, I first really liked the look of the Roland TD30 Cavey cymbals. I thought they looked fantastic. I liked the dark metallic gray look which I thought looked a little better than the TV 20 SX cymbals.
They looked great in photos, but in person they didn't make as cool an impression as the td30 kV cymbals. I loved how they looked and wish they still made them, but the problem that made them move away from this design was the fact that the finish eventually wears off and that just doesn't look good on a $7000 battery, so they went back to the rug. black, the alesis strike pro was going to have these types of symbols, there was a prototype of the alesis strike and they are showing it. I think kraft music has a video about this and those symbols looked amazing in the photos and in real life too. but probably for the same reason that Roland moved away from that design, but still, as far as pure appearance goes, the appearance of the metallic symbol is the best in my opinion, now that it comes to the best metallic electronic symbols appearance, in my opinion, the two biggest contenders. are full and Joe Becky is kind of flip flopping between liking the Field Raw series and also the Field Bright series.
Both symbols look incredibly awesome and again, everyone has different tastes on what type of symbols look best, but those are my two. Favorite Field and Joe Becky make amazing looking metallic electronic symbols. Let me know what your favorite top hats, ride cymbals, and crash cymbals are in the comments below. Have a great day. Thank you very much for watching until the end. see you all in a few
