Murdered Candy, A Custom Paint Technique

May 29, 2021
Hello everyone, welcome to another installment of color mixing with Chris. In this episode, we're going to show you how to achieve an effect and we're going to call it Killer Candy. It's three easy steps and one of those steps is applying a Sparkle hot rod. color in this case I'm using hot rod Sparkle pan we want four really good coats to get maximum effect and maximum depth in that color, so we'll show you what it looks like. This is code number two. I'll see you in a moment in code number four, so stay tuned, welcome back, that's code number four so you can see that the premise of this is really to get that Sparkle hot rod coverage to really want that in full effect.

So let's move on to step two, but first I want to mention what we're doing. It has to be over black, so a water-based sealer or any true dark black or semi-opaque black base coat will also work. but it has to be on black to get that maximum look. It works with a hot rod Sparkle color hot rod Sparkle blue or our cosmic Sparkle color cosmic Sparkle gold, so it's the same thing where we want maximum coverage, so three to four coats we really want. To have full saturation with that flake, the only difference from what I'm going to do now is that if you guys are familiar with the Sparkle hot rod, our red Sparkle hot rod is a little bit more magenta, it has a pinkish tone to it.

It's not really like a deep red, so what I'm going to do in this video to show you is I'm actually going to mix a little bit of our caramel with all of our blood red and apply a middle coat over this flake. to really intensify that red flake, I don't know if it shows up on camera, but I mean it's completely covered, it's got a lot of shimmer, but I just want a little bit more richness in that color so you can really do that with any of the other colors , but the one we really want to show you is the hot rod bright red with this blood red, so I have my blood red four to one, so that's four parts forty and fifty to one part caramel.

Oh, I'm I'll put it in my gun and you guys can see what it's going to look like. What I'm looking to do here is also just a middle layer. I'm not really trying to saturate it. I'm probably just going to make a nice one. coat and that will be enough to push it towards that rich red side of the color. I'm going to call it done, that's it, that's all I was trying to do and again, I don't know if it looks very good on camera, but you can see just pushing that flake a little bit more towards the red side, so You could probably do that with some of the other colors, just keeping in mind that adding the caramel to those hot rods or cosmic sea can sometimes push them up a bit. darker than what you're trying to achieve for an effect, keeping in mind that I already know what the last step of this will be, so I know that sometimes the effect you're going for will be better. if it's a little bit brighter than if it's darker, because what we're going to do to get that dull,

look is add a coat, two coats of our caramel black, so what we're going to do is put it on. something like that first coat that you just applied, it will be a very medium coat, two coats is enough until you start to see the tank or in this case the tank or whatever substrate you have start to disappear, it should almost turn black, but you're about to use too much or too little, so it's best to work with medium layers.

I like the middle layers of black and it won't really look like anything until you really understand what we're trying to achieve. that full effect, but you have to be very careful, it's two coats of black and then what it will do is mask that flake, that's why I said if you had

candy

also that flake, you wouldn't necessarily want to do that. Because it may be a little too dark, the black cancels out that effect, so we'll let this dry. I'm going to mix my sweet black, it's going to be the same way, it's going to be four parts forty and one part light fifty. caramel black so guys we are back for our third and final step this is the most important and crucial step and to get this effect our blood red is dry and now I mix my caramel black four to one of the same manner.
I did the blood red and now we're going to do medium coats and again depending on how you're spraying or what equipment you're using, if it's a larger gun, a smaller gun, all you're trying to do is just fade away. or erase this color, you want to stop it once you think it looks black; otherwise what will happen is you put in too much material and it just cancels out the color you're trying to allow you to see what you want to do. just make sure it looks black until the light hits it. Something I found useful is for this particular application.
I have my luma on so you can see exactly where you are and it helps if you don't have one of these. use just a normal light, you know, we also have our color combination lights, this works just as well, just hold it as you go, it's cheap insurance to make sure you have nice, even coverage before you go to that step, such time that. The next coat isn't even necessary depending on how you're putting it on, but I like two coats. The middle layers will be much drier than the way I spread my

candy

because again, like I said, this is the most critical step. they just want to darken their panel so I'm going to spray you can see what this looks like now you can see the black on the red it's already starting to cancel out this red a little bit the tank looks pretty black that's kind of what you're looking for so so what I'm going to do is let this dry a little bit and make sure I'm happy with my coverage again.
You can see how thin she is, but that's from there to here. All you're trying to do is just eliminate that red color in the face, but when you see this on the Sun anywhere with a lot of light or anywhere where you have a curvature, it will light up with this red. There's a really cool smoky caramel kind of effect underneath, so we're going to let this dry for a minute. I'm going to apply my second coat, which is the beautiful part about working lighter this way: it dries pretty quickly. almost factory so my second shows are going to be done the same way it's going to be very light and I'm going to get away from it that's it so let's let this dry let's lighten up a little bit here for today we're out to so you can see what they look like Hello everyone, welcome back, we are at the booth, our panels are clean, we are going to do a quick summary of the colors here so you can see, this is the tank that we started in the project this is the red Sparkle hot rod this is the Sparkle hot rod glue is the same procedure it was the same effect of the Sparkle hot rod and this is our cosmic gold with the candy killed now may not be recovered.
I don't know how good it will look on camera, it's definitely more of a subtle color change, it's not as pronounced as the flake, but that's just due to the size of the pearl, but it really gives you a nice, elegant effect and more gentle. something you guys can try - let's recap the steps: step 1 has to be on black, so that's the most critical thing, a nice solid black base - is the application of the hot rod Sparkle or the cosmic Sparkle, so go a make sure you apply at least four coats, a little more is better, you really want full coverage so you can see that maximum effect and then go back to the last step, which was applying the caramel black and it was like two coats that I mixed together.
That four to one, all we're trying to do is put a layer of black stain over the top of whatever project you're doing, so it's pretty critical because it's very easy to go too far and then it will fade. that color you're trying to achieve, so do one coat, let it dry, look at it with your gun, sunlight if you have it or a flashlight, whatever, it's really critical, maybe it's easier to drop another coat . is to take it off because if you start muting that you're not, it's not going to come back so the fourth step you can do is what we did if you remember on this bright red hot rod we added a medium layer of candy.
Or blood red just to improve that flake a little bit in terms of color saturation, make it a little bit redder. You can do this with any of the candies if any of the flakes the only reason I did this was simply because if you remember I said that that flake has a little bit of a magenta hue to it so we wanted to make it better. You could do it with any of the colors that we could do with the cosmic ones. You can mix any of our sweets. On top of that and you can play, you can get some really cool effects, so I think that about sums it up for our slain sweets.
I hope you thought this was a cool video and I'll see you next time.
