get a little

distance

in your game most people who come to the Academy want to take a golf lesson they say Michael I need a little consistency I need a little

distance

or help me get rid of my portion, you know what we're going to cover most, if not all of, with this tip, so let me rewind the video tape I used to work on at the Jupiter Island Club. in Florida for a guy named Gil Cavanaugh, one of the most influential people in my life and a phenomenal golf pro, he's already passed away, but he's a wonderful human being and he's coming back to the back of the course to talk to me a lot about different moves on the golf swing and one of the things I really admired was Sam Snead and this movement that Sam Snead has by letting this lead me to putt and open the body, helping you retain some spinal angle, helping you. to retain some distance, so let me show you what I'm talking about, let's go here and pick up this Sam Snead golf swing.

Now let me expand this for you, so here's Sam Snead at the top of his golf swing. and what you'll see and notice is that his lead knee, this is right here, this lead knee has bent quite a bit, he's actually created a little bit of left heel in the air, his body has a tremendous amount of coil, you can see how much depth he has in that rotation with his hips and how it almost looks like he's on his right heel, but what I want you to pay attention to is how this lead knee works, so let's move on to this. the next one and I want you to see how far this knee has gone back now, so let me shrink this down, go here, expand those two so you can see and here you can see how far that knee has gone on that knee. it's basically over the instep of the right foot and now this is just this camera angle, when we go to the one on the right, now what you can see is that the knee has pulled back and is now outside of the heel footprint.

Look at this last one now look at where this knee is and it's in a surrender position, so your knee has gone from this point here to this point here to this point here look at how much movement there is in those three knee segments. I'm not kidding, one of the most important and underrated parts of the golf swing, the lead knee, and when I was there on Jupiter Island, one of the things I worked on was a ball like this and I would put this. ball between my thighs, I would have this backswing keep the pressure of that ball right there and then as I came into the downswing I would take my lead knee and open it away from the follow knee, this follow knee would not move the La The front knee would open and the ball would fall, that was the key to start.

I spent hours doing this drill and what I can tell you is that if you get something like this and work on this, what you're going to develop is a little bit

more

clubhead speed. I'm finding that by doing this you can gain about five miles per hour of clubhead speed, which is a real distance of at least 1,215 yards and what you're also going to do is hit the ball

more

solidly, that will give you a little more consistency. What happens with a lot of players, not all players, but a lot of players, is that the club starts to drop into the slot and you get a golf ball that will start a little bit straighter or possibly even stretched out, which can eliminate that cut, so I'll leave it there for now.

I'm going to show you how to do this exercise, so we go back, do our backswing and leave the knee. let this lead knee come in so we have a little bit of space here now, at first you start to extend and the lead knee starts working towards the target, it won't go towards the target because of the way the body is made. You'll actually start to move, inviting your front hip to work in an open position, allowing your upper body to open up a little more. It'll start to take off a little bit of weight on the outside of that. foot and that will drive the power towards the club head, let me show you what that will look like.
I'm going to do this in slow motion, spread them out so one, two, three and when you're done doing that you're going to get a sensation of something you probably haven't felt before and you're going to feel like your glutes are just sandwiched together like that, it's like they're They turn into a vise, they go like this and the reason that happens is this the front hip is so far back in that direction and the trail hip is here the push off the ground is to straighten the leg. You'll see that kind of movement with Freddie's couples counseling where when he starts to go through the follow-through leg it just goes straight, the push goes straight and the glutes really intersperse.
I used to sing this vice vice baby, that's what I felt like my glutes were just a vice and they were just interspersed and that was creating a lot. of speed for me, so when I start doing this movement and I start putting it together instead of separating it, which is over time, so now I put it together not fast, now what starts to happen is the golf ball starts to take off. that was a partial swing for me 173 yards I was in the air the ball speed was 117 5 now do that for a while and this is what is going to start happening the club head speed will start to increase and what I'm aiming for when I do it In this drill, my goal is to achieve a club head speed or ball speed of about one hundred and twenty to two 123 miles per hour, which normally my 6 iron when I go to play is about 175 , but when I'm here doing this drill, this ball is going to be in the range of 185 to maybe even 190 just thinking about this, so putting it back together isn't fast or it's not as fast as I can go, but with the concept now this again was not as fast as I can go.
Look at this here, come here and look at this because this is what this all means: a ball speed of 120 2.4 miles per hour and that equals a carry distance of 183 and I'm not going to do it as fast as I can, so I know you want to see it because I want to see it too, right, we're curious, hey, what kind of ball speed are we going to hit here? What kind of distance are we going to go here? Well, again, as long as you make solid contact. I'm going to be able to hit that golf ball and it will end up going the distance I want.
Greg, can you do me a favor and replay that shot? Look at the curve of this shot we have here, look it starts to the right turns to the left remember I told you before that we were going to get rid of that cut, guess what happens, we got rid of the cut, so now we're going to make a Practice swing with your knee out of the way and then hold. passing like this up and I keep my spine angle, let's see if we can get this thing up to a 123 ball speed, very good, very good swing, very good distance, come here with me, look what we have, I have it.
You know what a little adrenaline goes a long way a 23.8 we rounded 124 loving that yeah I have a smile all day with this 186 I pulled out my 6 iron what is that 11 miles per hour clubhead speed? I got a small draw, so what did I end up doing? I have some consistency from the beginning. I'm not cutting it. I'm not dry. I'm not greasy and I'm not doing any of that. Very good distance. I wanted some of that distance, remember, I want distance, I want some consistency, I want to get rid of my slice, so some distance 1:24 ball speed 186 in the air distances increased about 11 yards 12 yards something like that, like that As I got more distance I got some consistency the golf balls started to respond the same way.
I was able to increase the speed of the ball there by increasing that movement the speed of that movement the familiar air the familiarity of that movement gives me a little more distance and then that ball started has some tie so I got rid of my portion all three things you want to get rid of I know you send me emails call my radio show Michael help me with this guide me make sure that lead knee is separating just like Sam Snead, he will center the body right in the middle of the footwork, it will allow you to swing straight, it will maintain your spine angle, the clubs will be in front, you will be happy and you know what that has shown. brought to you by time time for transformative advice brought to you by my friends at Morgan Franklin so many times we hear that you have to keep your head still, you don't want to move your head at all, in fact moving your head will create a bad There's something about your golf swing and yet if you spend time you will see the best players in the world shake their heads, look at the players of yesterday, say Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead, maybe even, well, today, probably a Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Dustin Johnson.
He moves his head dramatically, what allows this head movement? Well, one of the things that happens is we lose power, we lose speed because we don't have a full movement, in other words, get up here, get ready to take your shot, the body doesn't. broken, you get here, you pass and all of a sudden we have an abbreviated follow through, we lose a lot of distance or we don't hit the ball as far as we could and what ends up happening is we run into a problem because I got 170 but I don't get to 150 and there is a bunker or worse water in front and now I am in trouble, how do we solve that?
The way you solve it is by letting your head move and I'm not just saying let it go like this, I'm actually saying turn a little bit, use your peripheral vision because what happens is when you turn your body, your neck in effect restricts the amount of movement you have and what happens is that if I keep my neck and head focused right on the ball I will create less rotation with my upper body which will cause the club to not travel as far and that will steal some distance what I want you to do is let your head move just a little bit your eyes in your head can slide in other words, I can look out of the corner of my eye like this, which is what Jack Nicklaus did.
Nikolas was tilting his head like this and it allowed him to complete this. turn this way, so what I'm saying is let your head open, let your head turn this way and when you do that, what you will get is you will recover, two things will happen, one of them I'm going to do a much bigger turn, so this head I'm just going to let my head go over here. I don't want to lose sight of the ball. I just want to let my head turn slightly towards my Okay, and now what I'm going to get is I'm going to get a nice full turn, which is also going to allow me to do is create a tie.
Look we just hit the tube, Greg, can you show me that shot? Again, notice how this ball starts to the right and has a little bit of pull and notice how it hits the corner of the target. I haven't done this. Look at that dink appearing in the air, very good now we come. To the front here what you are going to see is the art of the draw and the art of the draw is my horizontal throw has to be to the right, which is the push side and then the face has to be towards the left, like this that my lateral spin has to be to the left, well I guess what I was able to do now what will also happen is I take that club from the inside and generate a little more club head speed.
I started to get some draws, but they will be long draws, so one from there flew in the air 175 yards. Now watch what happens when I start adding some speed to this and this is the part that's going to be really fun because what? You will see that not only will this ball go further, it will still have a draw, but my maximum point, the height I hit the ball, will rise into the air. That ball was 96 feet. I bet you I can take this to about 110, so here we go like this. I'm going to let my head spin.
I'm going to do this full coil looking out of the corner of my eye and the stick will come out from the inside. hit this in the air and it will go very far that ball 117 miles per hour the speed of the ball flew in the air about 175 here we go just letting my head spin now I gave that shot there I didn't catch it absolutely perfectly like I wanted to and Gregg, could you show me that again? What you will see is that the golf ball will have many spins. Look at the drawing of the ball.
Now back to the other information we were looking for. What we were looking for was an apex higher. I understood that no. I only got about 88 so call it 90 feet so very very similar could have done a little better but it didn't disappoint. The ball speed is up to 123 point 7, so it's a really good distance. Remember it was at 175 180 8.5 rounded 189 in the air now, what does that all mean? It means maybe Nicholas maybe Dustin Johnson maybe Sam Snead maybe Rory McIlroy maybe everyone is on to something maybe if we let this head spin a littleThe way we're going to create a little bit more range of motion, we did a study on this with Dustin, one hundred and ten degrees of shoulder rotation.
Don't think for a second that that ten on that shoulder rotation isn't due to the amount that you let your head turn to the right, we're going to do this one more time, so we're going to set up the exact same thing here, let the head turn out of the way, feel the distance the club is going to travel. I feel the distance of the rotation of the upper body good full blow again this one there I think the apex is up on that one yes, we have to show it we have to show it let's go here, remember 88 I told you it's two the buyback was not so good as I wanted I wanted that thing above 100 105 ball accelerates to 120 3.7 again very good distance 191 so let's go further so what does it all mean? very very simple you want to get a little bit more distance you want to get a draw you want to get a little bit higher apex you want this club to come from the inside you just can't get it to come from the inside no matter what you do you keep getting to the top , well you know how to solve that problem, look what others have done, they are very successful players. and see how that head, that head rotation, will allow upper body freedom, which will allow the club to come from the inside, will give you a little more distance, will give you a little more consistency and will give you that draw you're looking for and that's our transformative advice presented by Morgan Franklin in episode 89 last week we talked a little bit about the clubface.
I am going to continue this conversation with what has been demonstrated by Titleist and tell you about this yellow golf. The ball is real, you have to put it in the bag and start using it. It's phenomenal. Last time, I said it last week in episode 89. Last week we talked about the face and I showed you how this ball bounces off the face and the importance of the face so many people are talking about the way does this face make that face is responsible for so many things and you have to concentrate on it? Well, there were a lot of people who loved it and there were some who said it's okay now.
That information is great, but what do I do with it? Now I'll show you what to do with it. Understanding how people come into this shot and understanding face misalignment is one of the most important parts of the game of golf because what you can do before this club goes into motion anyone can do it, but what you do affects what you do. makes that ball, so if I take this ball and I bring my yellow ball and I put the club face right here and I give you if you could give me that aerial shot right here, what you can see is that the leading edge of the face is now parallel to this PVC pipe that I have on the floor.
Many of your eyes will see it as a square and now what they will see. What you're seeing is you're actually looking at the top line of the club, not the leading edge of the golf club, so you see that the top line of the golf club is now parallel to this back of that PVC pipe when I do that well. The club is set in a closed position and what happens when we swing from there, we either hit it with that closed face and it goes to the left or we open the club face when we get there to try to compensate for that and now we start hitting . to the right, what I want you to do is understand that when you place that face,

grip

it the right way and for many of you, particularly those who are doing hooks and draws, that club face will appear as if it is in an open place , it's not square and look what happens when we hit this, so now I hit that golf ball, it looks like my target, you can see the ball goes right to the target and bounces there, now we go up. here and I just want you to look at these numbers because it's really cool when I get a hundred and ninety-seven rpm pull to the left that's literally no curve Greg, can you show me that pull again?
You can see that golf. The ball is a straight shot, that ball didn't really have much movement and I love watching it bounce towards the target there, so what I want you to do is work on understanding how to square the clubface. what the square looks like what the open looks like what the closed looks like and all you have to do is make one of these little tee bars right here and then you put the golf ball in position, you put the club face in your square position, you grab it, this is also going to help you get the golf ball into position and then we're going to hit it.
There's another relatively straight shot, maybe just a slight draw I had on that one, but a very, very good shot now, how are we going to use this well? When we want to start moving the ball, we want to start understanding how to open the face, how to close the face, how to swing along the lines that we intend, so what we do is we take our little tee bar here and the I spin. Like this, now what I'm going to do is make a little cut, so I turn this way when I turn that way.
Now I want to make sure that my face returns to the square position. but my body is now positioned in an open place, so now I'm gripping this clubface in a slightly open position, so now with my body positioned to the left and my clubface very square, I understand where the square is and now that. What I'm going to do is take this swing and what I'm going to get is a golf ball that's going to start to the left and swing back to the right, Greg. Do me a favor and show me that shot again and what you're going to see is that the ball starts to the left and turns to the right and finally ends up inside the target that I'm trying to hit. that's great and all I did was just take this little T bar and turn it now when I want to get a tie, now I'm going to turn it to the open position.
You can use this in two ways, one is to turn it towards In an open hole, I'll say a closed position, but I leave the clubface on the target, so when I do that and then I grab it, you end up gripping the club in a position a little bit stronger, so I have that clubface like that on my body. now it's set up there so now what I have is I've got the club face in what would be a closed position and now when I do this to the right and this is a little bit over the top so I'm going to move it back. just a little bit, so now I go into this and now, what I'm going to do when I hit this, this ball will have a little bit of draw and you can see now, look at that spun ball, it's actually overplayed. a little bit as I get settled in there, but Greg plays us back so everyone can see how it started to the right and turned to the left, so what I'm doing is using the T-bar to show me what squaring the face and then also help me with my alignment.
Now I told you there was another way to do this and that way to do it is as simple as this: you start where it was before, so it's set. as we want now what I'm going to do is set it open or close to this but continue to leave the face of the golf club in its position parallel to this tee line, so set yourself up like this now I'm going over here, open the body of the face of the club, it's set up square this is going to be a little cut so I start and you can see the ball is going to start to the left side and it's I'm going to turn left to the right side look come here with me now and I'll do it what you can see is my horizontal throw there 5.32 to the left my side turns there 714 to the right so baby ruth is me, baby ruth is Right now, what I'm going to do is I'm going to do a tie and do the exact same thing, like this that I will leave the clubface where it points at that target.
Then I'll set this up. so I'm kind of close to that whole clubface that's going to be in that closed position. Now go ahead and hit this thing that's going to start and it's going to turn to the left side. Will he have enough to get there? the target yabba-dabba-doo maybe that's how we roll you want to come to the front come with me to the front here and what you'll see is that I have a lateral spin of about 12 12 or so not a bad number and the horizontal launch 44.7 Greg, Come on, everyone wants to see it again.
I also see that this thing starts to the right. Everyone says it yabba-dabba-doo boom, that's on target, so what I want you to do is understand. how to use this face information that I gave you in episode 89 and apply it this way. A small alignment stick or alignment device will help you control the clubface, but you need to know what the square looks like. many of you were paying attention to what is happening by deleting it. I mean the top line instead of the leading edge, the leading edge is what you want to have perpendicular to that target line or that attack line and when you get it, you will have control over that golf ball, start moving it left to right, from right to left, whatever you want, all you have to do is understand that the face is number one, pay attention, it shows that presented by Titleist.
Grip Tip Time brought to you by Golf Pride. So I gave a guy a golf lesson the other day and he said to me Michael: I don't have power I don't have speed in my swing I'm losing all kinds of distance I'm inconsistent with my swing and I look at the clubface and there are marks all over it. face and I watch them hit a ball and I say, oh man, you're holding this club incorrectly, you know what you need, you need a hammer now, why would a hammer be advantageous to you? when we grab the hammer we grab the hammer so we can do this now most of us grab the hammer with our right hand and we hammer like this this is our dominant hand there are many of you who are left handed and you will do the same thing too and you will go like this but never you hold the hammer this way, just never the hammer this way, so you can get leverage with your elbow, we don't hammer like this, we hammer like this, that's how hammer, well, guess how the hammer is held, how the hammer is held , how do you hold the hammer, now, what are some of the important things that we need to understand about how we hold a hammer well?
The first is: I want to give you a little information. The idea is that there you see two of those green dots that will be the thumb pad that will be the heel pad. These are very important parts of the grip that we must understand because when we hold the club what I want is these two green dots. to sit on top of the hammer so you can see when I hold it in my fingers and I positioned it to put the heel pad there and the thumb pad there now I'm holding the hammer so I can create leverage and hit the nail without having to move my elbow I can hit it that way guess what I want that same power that same effortless power in a golf swing how I hold the club so I take my grip now you can see right there it says a line What I'm going to do is take that point green and I'm going to put it right in alignment and then I'm going to let this green dot touch the middle finger of my hand like this and when I do that now I'm holding this club in a way that will allow me to get leverage on the club.
Many of you were sitting there thinking, well, what if I don't do it right? So leverage with your elbow, so now we come in here like this. we take a swing and we take leverage at the elbow and this goes straight into the air and this becomes your curve, you lose all your wit, you lose all your power, you lose all your consistency, so now we get a golf club, what do? I teach my students to do and what I tell you is hold the stick in front of you, wrap it around your fingers first, so we go with your fingers, then with your pads, and then with your thumb, and when I do this correctly , this is one of the things that Hogan talked about in his book when you hold this grip correctly, you should be able to hold the grip, hold this club with four fingers outside the club using the index finger and the heel pad of the front hand to hold the stick if someone came here tried to get this out of my hand you couldn't and I can still move this stick without much problem.
I'm going to use my thumb to hold it, but I can hold this club with the heel pad, the index finger and the thumb right there on the top so now I have all the pressure I have all the power all set up now I go with the thumbs now I put my hand my other hand on it and now what I'm going to do is when I swing I'm going to let this club have some influence and you can't believe how far you can hit this ball without any effort so I'm just going to lift this club in the air just like that and now I swing.
I barely swung the club, I didn't move at all, there was no shoulder rotation, nothing, and yet when I got here I carried a hundred and seventy yards with a 6-iron, 170 yards, I got a hundred and fifteen miles per hour of ball speed and I didn't. I moved my body at all, that's what's so important because when I start adding that and with the right grip with the way I put my hand here, my fingertips and then my thumb, now I do that. Now what is that? Look, what happens when I start putting my body into it?
My golf clubs will go beyond parallel. My club head speed will increase a lot and I'll go so far, maybe even get a draw, so now what I have. Did I have a shot that comes backto the flag? Greg, can you repeat that for me? Let's see how it looks. Look, start on the right and turn back to the left. And I'm sure, even though I didn't do it. Look at it, I'm sure that golf swing went parallel, I certainly felt like it was a lot further away with that wrist hinge. Now I'm going to hit a toe, the heel, the thumb.
I'm going to show you something else here in a second. That will teach you how to hold this club correctly so you don't get confused by this. Now look at this one again. Same full swing. Greg. Can you play this one again too? Because what we're going to see is we're going to see a big appeal in this look this look at that start look at that turn to the left side that's because of the way we're holding the club now I want to show you something else remember I told you it was I'm going to tell you something, one of the ways that ruins your grip.
One of the things you do that ruins the way you hold the club is you grip it with the club head on the ground and the clubs come out at an angle and your arm is at an angle, what you will tend to do is just grip it this way and you go right to the pads first and you get the pad, the heel pad under or on the side of the grip and you'll see that when you hold your club incorrectly you'll be able to read that alignment right there at the top of the grip, when you can read that alignment you'll know that you are not on the right line. you don't have the club held correctly in your hands that's incorrect what we want to do is make that alignment disappear by placing that green dot right above that alignment that will allow me to hold this club correctly now I'm going to get some leverage now look at the distance because now I have my tie I know I'm going to get a tie look at this distance we came right here, there you go, it's a good shot look at this one say hello to that target look over come here, look at all the good things that are going to happen, apex 105 Yeah, what we have, 121 ball speed, you bet, how about 180 distance and that's just employing that wrist leverage and allowing the club to have a little bit of length in the backswing, so this is it. what I want you to do, it's very simple, get yourself a glove, take a pen of some kind, put a little dot right there on the heel pad, put another dot on the thumb pad and then when you hold the club, take that little dot on the heel pad, cover that line, make sure that second dot on the thumb pad touches the middle finger or the index finger of your lead hand right there, that will let you know that I have the club leveraged correctly and then do what Hogan did.
What you're going to do is hold this, remove those three fingers. You can see here on camera one how I have these three fingers are out, the thumb is out and I have control over this club and what I promise you is that when you do that you will have control over the club, you will get a lot more distance and As you get more distance, you'll get more confidence, you won't have to swing. with that much force, let the leverage let the leverage that you're creating with the way you're holding it help you set it up correctly and get a hammer while you're at it.
I'm telling you, it will help you improve your golf swing, it will help you get better. your game and it will give you that power that you are looking for and that is a grip tip brought to you by golf brat you
