MESSY TO MINIMAL KITCHEN DECLUTTER! *This Before and After Tho* Budget-Friendly Kitchen OrganizationJun 06, 2021
Lately I've been thinking about how we, as a society, really value satisfying befores and afters, whether it's on an HGTV show or following the cleantalk hashtag. We are watching videos on YouTube where a girl from Seattle got rid of 80 things from her family and the before and after are amazing, if you are like me, what is hidden behind closed doors bothers you more than what you see visually on your house, so all the befores and afters in the world don't really help those feelings of frustration we feel. I have because we are not going deep enough into our space, so in today's video I am going to share with you an extreme order of my

decluttering of my kitchen.
Be doing a little bit of cleaning around here because at the end of getting rid of stuff, it's always nice to be able to seal it all up with a nice cloth and a little bit of rubbing to get the place shiny and going, hit that subscribe button. turn on the bell and let's start here, roll up your sleeves because it's always good to have some motivation to tidy, clean or organize your own work, we can work as a team, let's start, okay, let's look in the spice cabinet oh my goodness, ah, this place is so frustrating, so it's this weird shaped cabinet.
I have shown this before delving into this side. I have a little lazy Susan back there that she would save for peanut butter and honey and stuff like that. everything ended up being knocked over and pushed around, there are probably some sticky puddles back there which is overwhelming and frustrating. Having these little decanting things that work great if we keep on top of refilling them, but the main problem is here and I'm not just trying. to pass the buck um but it's the fact that my husband is literally addicted to spice blends I mean this heat oh my gosh I'm not here to throw my husband under the bus because actually this cabinet crazy represents something for which I am very grateful. because and that's the fact that he's taken over a lot of the cooking, especially at dinner time, he's the meat man that's been in the last year or so, the last few years he's really applied himself , studied and likes to perfect this art of grilling and cooking. meats to perfection, he is very talented at this and, as a result of this learning and discovery, he has acquired so many different spices and blends.
Oh, there's a new brand in the spice store. I have to try that one and he's really good at what he does. Unfortunately, our little cabinets and our little kitchen aren't really conducive to storing all these different spice blends that he only uses a couple of times and then stops using, so it's just one of those things and we can do it as an effort. equipment. So we both cook, I make all the sides, salads, lunch and breakfast, and he makes all the meats, so I'm going to go over this and make some executive decisions about what's left and what's gone, but first to throw anything away. or donate it or whatever, it will go into a little container where he will be quarantined and he can look at it if he finds that something in particular is missing, we can retrieve it and maybe look at what we have.
I come in here and try to change it or create space, but right now this isn't working for me, so I talked to him about it and he's totally fine with me doing what I think needs to be done and then giving him something like that. I kind of have the final say on things that are under his jurisdiction, so we'll see how this turns out. I'm going to take everything out, clean some things, it's a little gross, it's a little dusty, a little sticky, so I want to reset the space and then finish this corner because oh man, I'm going to feel so much better after I do this, so I know what you're thinking, Natalie, why don't you use the original containers your spices come in?
It is worth putting in this work to decant them and my answer to that and what I always find every time I go to the effort of doing this transfer to these spice jars is that yes, it is absolutely worth it, especially since most of the spices and condiments that we get come in containers that are too big for this space because we buy them in bulk or we buy them from an organic store that only sells them in these little plastic bags, so this is the perfect solution for us, I just have You have to get the job done, so here's an example of that quarantine container concept.
This is one I created and just placed it in this cabinet. Here we had these originals, I think they're like from the target, these little ones um. measuring cups and they are out of size and that bothers me but that's another thing for another time um and then at some point my husband found these oxo and thought they would be good um but we both kept using them These we don't need two sets but I didn't want to just throw them away or donate them because I wanted to see if you know my husband really loves these more than these.
He hasn't looked for them or asked for them since. I made this about four months ago, so I'm going to put it in a kind of bigger quarantine container with some of these spices and when I get home I'll say, "Hey, do you think we can get rid of these now? Sorry, I just I had to do that I don't want to make my house a prison for the people who live in it I don't want my desire and my things that make me feel more at peace to put someone out of their way or bring opposite feelings to another person, so as I go and we've been working on finding minimalism and simplifying our space, I have in mind what my ideal would be if I was one person and I could organize it any way I wanted to do it and then I have the compromise in mind and what will bring peace to more people in the house instead of just me, so that's what I have in mind as I go here.
I've already made some really good progress. I'm going to continue working on the things that are so much on this cabinet over the microwave like on this side, uh spice cabinet, casey text weston, do you use the dispenser on your pancake mixer more? question mark hey babe, I'm going through the spices in the spice cabinet and there are a lot of things in here that I don't know if you use or not. Could I just shout it out and see which ones you want to keep here on the stove and which ones I can put in a container? so you can access it when you do special things, so Kinder's taco mix you use, uh, okay, garlic, chili, okay, buttery rotisserie next to the woods, you should use that often enough.

Thank you so much for stopping by if you like what you see, don't forget to subscribe and hit the bell so we can continue connecting. Okay, mission accomplished. With the spice cabinet and the cabinet over the microwave I was able to do both at the same time because there was some spilling over each other so this is what I have to do, I'll give you a quick walk through, all good, it looks like this. much better here so we have our updated decanted spices some of which I took out the salt and pepper because we were just grinding our salt and pepper so it doubled and works better here are Weston's must have spice blends um Trager rub and then this buttery rotisserie from Kinders.
I see my friend Kim from the wads uses it all the time and then these little pepper flake mixes from the Flat Iron Pepper Company she uses all the time and then I just cleaned up and ordered our honey vanilla extract. agave syrup, this little round one that is a great solution for an awkward corner cabinet because instead of digging into what you can't see here, you just have one lazy susan to show you everything and then I have a couple more lazy susans next to the There's no way I'm buying anything new for this video or this project and these are just things I already had so I had one of these that was packed with too much stuff so I separated my vinegars here from my oils here and this is going to work. cool and this little nook here is where I keep our fancy plates and bowls.
This is like we're doing a fancy dinner for Christmas or something, they go there and they're almost never used, but it's the perfect use for this corner because otherwise it's going to be empty, so oh my gosh, it looks so much better there. and up here you can see much better the Western coffee maker that he brings every morning with a cheese grater and then a container with his mandolin, a couple of funnels that we have. There's a candy thermometer in there, stuff we don't use often enough to have a bottom shelf, but works perfectly up there.
I feel much better about this, so the spice cabinet is ready. This cabinet is like our smoothie making cabinet. We keep our um. the blender that's there at the bottom is actually plugged in, so we just have to pull it out. The top two shelves are a little crazy, but that's Westin domain 100 because he has protein powder supplements, all kinds of pre-workout stuff that only he uses. only he knows, so I'll let him deal with that another time. I'm going to move on to more of my jurisdiction. Now I'm going to go through this cabinet which is where we keep the cups, plates, bowls and that kind of stuff. like our everyday dishes and stuff, and then we have these drawers here that have utensils that need to be gone through and they have some things that need to be removed, we have towels, kitchen linens in there, what are these cutting boards? and I have a collapsible colander.
Every once in a while we have kids dishes in the bottom drawer, there's a lot of crumbs and dirt and stuff in there, so I want to take everything out, give it a good sweep and find anything that needs to come out of there, so I'll start in this top cabinet and I'm moving down now that our family has gotten rid of over 80 of our things. I know I keep saying that, but I mean, I'm still surprised by how much stuff we have compared to what we had last year. or about 18 months ago, I completely changed my cleaning and just the little tidying maintenance that I do now, tidying up is a lot more about maintaining space and because we are a family of five and three of those people are three small children and then Yes You add that to the fact that I work in social media and content creation, there is always an influx of items in our house, even though we try to be more conscious of our spending and our consumption, it still happens like it happens to anyone else. and I think people have this false idea that minimalists just don't buy anything and the reality is that minimalists still buy things that we are very good at getting rid of things when they no longer serve us and getting rid of them doesn't necessarily mean just we throw things away without thinking, we donate reused gifts to people or we just take them to a place that could use them much better than us, why store things that have no use for us if someone else could put them to better use or in a different capacity, so That's something to keep in mind.
I know a lot of people here on my channel don't call themselves minimalists or cringe at the idea of minimalism like this label, but for us it's just a way to really focus on what matters most for our family and our home andWe have found that it is not restrictive, in fact it is quite the opposite, it gives us a lot of freedom and has freed up a lot of time that we can spend with our family and doing other things besides maintaining our things and you know I don't like sending them a lot of links or products, but I get questions all the time about this handheld vacuum that I'm using, it's from Shark, it's the wand vacuum and It's one of my favorite things of all time.
I use it all day, every day, especially in my kitchen, so I'll link it in the description box for you guys to check out if you're curious, so now I'm going to move on to another chronically disorganized area of the kitchen, which it's under the kitchen sink let me know in the comments which area of your house always seems to attract clutter or become disorganized for me it's that spice cabinet and under the kitchen sink. I actually recently did a
declutterdown here, but I still found a few things that needed to go and I just rearranged things where they needed to be. super awkward place with this disposer installed on the market that the previous owners put in here, they also put in this water filtration system which was a total joke so it's definitely not how I would choose it to be but especially when you live in a place. like you were renting or moving to a place where other people had a lot of authority to make decisions.
It can be a challenge to keep things the way you want, but that's okay, we can do it. I just have to be a little creative and living with less stuff definitely helps with that, with the main areas of this kitchen organized I thought I wouldn't find anything else and I was almost not going to open this bottom drawer. my oven or this Lazy Susan corner cabinet, but I forced myself to do it, it literally took me less than five minutes and I ended up finding a couple of things, so even if you don't think there's anything to tidy up in a I think it might be worth it a couple of minutes to just take a look and then free up some extra space.
In the end I had to push what I ordered to this side of the table because the kids needed to order lunch and mom's life collided. Well, what do you have leftover chicken nuggets and spaghetti from last night? So I'll show you what I've ordered so far. I actually already took out some trash, so imagine a little extra trash added to this pile, but I had this big mason jar, I have two of these, but I only use one. Someone will be lucky to discover that I have a couple of small cast iron saucepans at the thrift store that I never use.
My fantasy cooks with cast iron and seasons them and all that I just don't have time for that measuring spoons like I showed you this little pancake mixer dispenser that Weston bought thinking he would love it but never actually uses it um talk to him about it. one, a couple of extra small plates that I found buried in the corner of the cabinet and that we didn't use. I have these little wine glasses, but they are too small. I usually pour a full glass, like sparkling water, into a wine glass. with a little bit of lemon juice and a little bit of stevia and these only hold about half of them so I have a couple of larger ones and I don't need these so I'll pass them on to you.
These are empty spice containers like I was showing you. Some straws that I don't use anymore because I actually bought a duo of straw spoons that are multi-purpose and it's great, these are the spices that are going to the Weston Spice Graveyard for you to grab if you end up finding I realize you miss them, I found this coconut oil that expired in 2019, I don't know how I missed it in my last pantry but here we are, it probably needs to go, it smells a little rancid so it's probably time to let that go. It's a shame though there's still a lot left in the lighter, dead batteries and this silicone thing that's supposed to stretch over the mouth of a container but always falls out and then an old towel that I no longer need and speaking of which. lighter I wanted to show you this, so I ordered that little butane lighter.
It was empty, but I don't think I'll ever buy another butane lighter because I discovered this on Amazon again. I don't like promoting products or I share a lot of links with you but oh my god this could change your life it's electric you literally charge it via USB and when you press the power button it makes this electric arc and when you touch it with a candle wick, set it on fire oh my god it's amazing and you can put it out you can see how much juice is left in it and it lasts forever literally it's amazing.
I'll link this below for you guys, just thought I'd also share these are Those straw spoons I also bought on Amazon. Okay, I'm sharing too many products and links, but I know I'll get questions about that, so here are the links in the description box. Definitely not a big pile of stuff to get rid of. It's like my other messy or minimal episodes, but the difference getting rid of so much stuff in my small kitchen cabinets has made is worth every ounce of effort and as soon as they finish lunch, they'll go off and do something.
Play time, oh your dress is inside out, did you dress up today? They're going to finish lunch and then I'm going to start cleaning the kitchen now that everything is organized. It will feel so good to clean everything and pick it up. Actually my husband is usually the one who cleans the refrigerator. He made it over the weekend, which is kind of the inspiration for this whole kitchen tidiness. It's been great to have the refrigerator all together, organized, tidy, clean and I thought you know what I think I need for the rest of my kitchen, so big thanks to Weston for those efforts.
I'm going to do some cleaning to finish this job I did in the kitchen, so go ahead. Upstairs, if you have something to clean, I'll play some fun music for us to clean too and we'll work together, take control of your feelings, don't lose, you know you've been dreaming, change everything and that's it. I'd call that a good couple hours of work sorting out the cabinets, going through every drawer, nook and cranny in this kitchen, plus sealing everything by scrubbing it and making it shine again, but honestly, can you? Notice the difference from this angle versus the first, honestly there's not a big before and after here but that's the point, sometimes we don't always have a whole weekend to dedicate to doing big decluttering or getting rid of 80 of our stuff in one go. we have to take it in small pieces at a time and I hope this video today shows you that it can make a big difference, whether it's visual or not, now of course when I open this spice cabinet I see a big visual difference. much better and it works much better, but this is a closed door that when you look at the kitchen as a whole, when you walk into my house, you will not notice the difference, but I do and that is what matters because I am the queen of the kitchen and The king is on his way home right now and we're going to start dinner, so I'm going to say goodbye to this video, but I hope you enjoyed joining me while I tidy up the kitchen. kitchen and I did a little cleaning here in the kitchen thank you very much for watching today's video give it a like if you enjoyed it don't forget to subscribe and activate the bell button and don't forget to see the other people in This mega collaboration of motivation for so you can get even more motivation and encouragement while decluttering your home.
Thank you very much for spending a small part of your day here with me on my channel and in my kitchen. I will see you later.
