Mazda CX-30 Puts Big Fun In Small Crossovers (But How's The Price?)
you're sitting around the house you're bored what a perfect time to subscribe to my channel huh humans are a finicky breed we insist on buying
crossoverswhile dismissing perfectly good hatchbacks because well I'm really not sure the
mazdaCX 30 is some three inches shorter in overall length and wheelbase and five inches taller than the
Mazda3 it shares an architecture with they're kind of the same size have much of the same utility and are both available with all-wheel drive and yet sales of the three have been trending down for years if
Mazdacan turn them out the 30 has the potential to be the brand's best-selling model in 2020 it slots in between the brands tiny CX 3 and the larger but not too big cx-5 there is the CX 4 it's sold in China it has more of a wagon II silhouette to it and I don't understand why
Mazdacan't use the CX 4 moniker in the United States for example Honda uses Odyssey in Japan and the United States but they're completely different vehicles pricing begins at 23,000 dollars for a front drive model with 16 inch alloy wheels all-wheel drive adds 1400 bucks do yourself a favor at the very least move up a notch to the select models starting at 25 grand it adds dual zone automatic climate blind spot warning proximity key Plus Android auto and apple carplay a fashion bonus selects bigger 18-inch wheels improves CX 30s visual balance since in many colors the dark cladding makes the wheel opening Sapir huge the wide slabs...
of grey plastic aren't as apparent with dark paint like machine grey which is a $300 of charge at $31,000 as tested this all-wheel drive Premium Package is not cheap
Mazdaas you know is reaching up market under a heavy metal hood I'm surprised it's not aluminum to lower the center of gravity is a 2.5 liter normally aspirated 4-cylinder horsepower and torque figures are the same 186 for both of them it runs on regular grade gas there are six forward speeds happening here and the selector has a nice smooth mechanical feel which I prefer to electronic joysticks only premium gives drivers the ability to make manual shifts at the wheel same with a head-up display if you were wondering I choose between normal and sport modes or if you find yourself far from avocado toast and sushi there's off-road traction assist for rugged conditions whether it's the base bottle or the fancy model this is the only engine transmission combination that you can get in the CX 30 at 3400 pounds the four-cylinder has around a hundred and fifty extra pounds to haul around over the
mazda3 zero to sixty happens in a little over eight seconds if you want something quicker Kona has a turbo option same with Kia shell toes because the premium is the only cx30 to get cylinder deactivation it's average EPA fuel efficiency rating is 1 mpg higher at 27 miles per gallon with all-wheel-drive and that's about what I'm seeing to improve the driving dynamics
Mazdauses something called...
G vectoring control plus it's really hard to describe and I'm driving trying to stay safe here but in a nutshell it can do things like pulse any one of the four wheels individually and even add a little bit of acceleration imperceptibly to improve the driving dynamics it can't a be the system so I don't really know how well it works but this thing feels great it's got that great barton fink feeling google it if you don't know what i'm talking about as interesting as that movie is this
smallsport you entertaining it's higher ride height and extra weight doesn't seem to get in the way of cornering fun steering is nicely weighted with some Road feel coming through the wheel what is it with
Mazdaand great handling all of them seem to take curves in a frisky sort of manner the cx30 is no exception suspension is a little fur but that's still kind of comfortable this is a fun vehicle to drive sort of like a higher
Mazda3 maybe a poor-man's BMW x1 it's open to some light off-roading too though this is no Jeep renegade trailhawk curiously
Mazdagives both Laden and unladen ground clearance figures six point nine and seven point nine inches respectively it'll certainly be laden down when someone is driving right you can't defeat the automatic engine start/stop system in this car that's not an issue because it doesn't have one which is pretty unusual automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection...
adaptive cruise control lane departure warning and driver attention warning our standard kit the premium here has adaptive LED headlights for a
smallvehicle the cx30 is relatively quiet at highway speeds narrow side windows mean visibility is far from panoramic and looking over my left shoulder means a face full of b-pillar and not much else if you really try you can trip up the automatic transmission but generally it behaves very well and drop it into sport mode you can really tell it holds gears longer it sharpens up the throttle response definitely sport mode one thing to keep in mind driving dynamics shouldn't change much from the premium to the lower select model so if you don't have loads of cash cx30 still shows you a good time if you've ever peeked into a
Mazda3 this space should look familiar and upscale materials have a quality look and feel about them pit the ambiance up against the Lexus UX and ask yourself if it's worth an $11,000
pricebump top trim models get heated leather seats that support well at least for average-sized adults a wireless charging pad is 275 dollars it goes into the floor of this moderately deep center console with a clever armrest but that would hinder what you might store in it this might not be a huge vehicle but there are many places to squirrel things away just like a larger rig the Bose sound is good engineers relocated the woofers from the door panels to under the dash to eliminate bass rattling the user-interface...
sports an eight inch display it's the same size in all CX 30s mounted high and within the eye line of the road this is not a touchscreen everything is controlled with this jog wheel and surrounding cluster of shortcut buttons generally it's fine though inputting directions into the Navi system is tedious the HVAC controls are separate and straightforward a pro tip there's no need to go into the menu when switching between the
Mazdainterface and Android or carplay just hold this down momentarily and it toggles between the two easy-peasy how you doing these days practicing your social distancing like a responsible adult be responsible and not easy to do in a vehicle this size but at five foot nine I'm comfortable back here foot knee and legroom are good Headroom a little bit on the tight side but doable and the door openings are a little bit on the
smallside so if you're often bringing car seats in and out bring them on the test drive check that out oh one thing I will say the cushions are high enough to be comfortable but they are on the short side door pockets will securely hold a thermal coffee mug important here in Seattle important everywhere is keeping phones charged run a long cord from the console I guess frustrating that there's only one pocket for storage the fanciness of this top premium model does not run high enough for heated rear seats but then neither does an Audi q3 I suppose this is a
smallvehicle with a noticeable driveshaft tunnel...
there are belts for three but crammed in here and none would be comfortable I'd limit the count to two even after social distancing is no longer a thing I checked with Costco yes they do have toilet paper and paper towels all the basics but I don't want to deal with the optics of me coming out of the warehouse with a pallet full of toilet paper doesn't look good for me so I'm gonna skip that test for a little while okay I can still give you a tour of the trunk there's a lip to lift things over No storage under here but a spare for remote trekking is practically a necessity seat releases are hidden a bit the backs dropped to a fairly but not completely flat load floor I'm not expecting 40/20/40 split seats in the
pricerange but I'm always open to a pleasant surprise fortunately for testings sake I've amassed a bunch of suitcases in different sizes seat backs up this is a 20 cubic foot space the same as the
mazda3 hatchback which holds five packs of the two ply or five bags of various sizes overall CX thirties lines are uncluttered and clean not a lot of lines racing this way and that other than the cladding which seems to be required by law the design is borderline elegant while test driving this against Subaru Crosstrek Nissan Rogue sport Honda HRV Kia Soul and the others I've mentioned don't forget to look at the larger
Mazdacx-5 which is a couple grand more or the
Mazda3 hatchback that's a bit more affordable think...
outside the box when choosing your box the CX 4 name would work better in
Mazdas lineup but most everything else about the
smallcx30 it's just right if you're flexible in what you consider a crossover to be check with your friendly neighborhood
Mazdadealer to see if there are any incentives on
Mazda3 with all-wheel drive it's a fine vehicle that is not sold particularly well there might be some deals to be had functionally and mechanically they're very similar and one last quibble with the CX 30 I'm not a fan of the key fob the tiny identical buttons are hard to read and there are no Braille markings held upside down it's easy to hit the panic button ask me how I know as for kovat 19 now keep these videos going as long as I can I suspect there will be more dreamers and fewer shoppers as this virus ravages the finances of people all over the world in case you're wondering we in Seattle are holding up just fine as things closed down due to social distancing at Costco only a certain number of people are let in at one time but the employees at Warehouse number one are doing a great job of disinfecting the carts and calming the nerves of shoppers in Nevada I'm gonna try to think of something a little bit more creative than suitcases okay and a little bit of trivia did you know that the teepee contest was originally going to be it fits in the trunk and I was going to go to Costco every week and find something really big and see if it would fit in...
the trunk but my boss thought the toilet paper thing was pretty funny so we just stopped there all right all right that's driven TomTom bulk
