MASSIVE DISCOVERY Changes Majora's Mask Forever!

Feb 27, 2020
Hello absolute legends, something huge is watching the speed of Majora's Mask, a huge and crazy new

discovery

has completely reshaped the way the game is played. Records are being broken daily and new strategies are being developed as we speak. The Zelda franchise is quite well known for hosting some of the most game breaking speedruns out there these games aren't particularly known for being small and yet speedrunners can beat them in ridiculous times the breadth of the wild can be beaten in 27 minutes Wind Waker can be beaten in just under an hour Ocarina of Time was recently beaten in under 17 minutes, Link to the Past's world record is 1 minute and 31 seconds.

Majora's Mask wasn't exactly a long sprint either, with the world record clocking in at 48 minutes and 32 seconds just a couple of months ago, but it's now been taken to the next extreme with speedrunners able to complete the game in less than half an hour. hour. The key that unlocked this

massive

time game was an exploit called deprecated reference tampering that allows the player to travel to otherwise inaccessible locations. extremely early locations in the game, in the case of the new world record strategy, after starting the game we can almost immediately travel to the moon, where the final boss fight takes place, of course there are some tricks in the path to make everything possible and these technical strategies are never the simplest things to execute, but in general it is relatively easy to understand the general idea, at least to the point where you can watch the speedrun and follow it to celebrate this groundbreaking

discovery

Let's learn the guiding principles behind it. the new strategy, even though the main exploit is quite difficult to understand, the race route itself is quite easy to understand, so we will go over everything from start to finish, even if you have never played Majora's Mask, this trick is extremely interesting. definitely stick around now sit back and relax as we delve into the holy grail of

has put a moon on a collision course with terminal if left to its own devices the moon will land exactly on the watch city completely destroying the area as it would happen link the hero of ocarina of time has ventured into the lands in search of his fairy friend Navy through his travels he encounters a Skull Kid who has stolen and been possessed by the Mask of Majora links Skull Kid Steel to the horse Epona and the ocarina of time and turns Link into a Deku scrub before escaping.

Link finds his way to Clock Town in search of Skull Kid and discovers that Skull Kid is waiting at the top of the clock tower, an area that only he can access. On the eve of the carnival of time that will take place in three days at midnight on the third day, the top of the clock tower opens and Link confronts Skull Kid, the mask in full control of Skull Kid pulls the moon down. at an increasing rate that guarantees imminent destruction. Link manages to steal the ocarina during the battle and after a flashback where he relearns the song of time, he uses the ocarina to reverse time and ends up three days in the past: his first arrival in Clock Town as Link. he is not powerful enough to defeat the possessed Skull Kid or prevent the moon from collapsing.

He is tasked with finding a way to do it. The only way to stop the moon is to summon four giants who have been sealed by a curse in order to free them Link must travel to four temples to lift the curse and allow the giants to intervene once the giants have stopped the moon and prevented He destroys the terminal mask and Majora becomes angry and possesses the moon itself with the moon's power rising under control. of the mask, the Giants cannot stop their descent much longer and it is up to the hero to enter the moon and defeat Majora's Mask once and for all.
That's the plot of Majora's Mask, of course, Link can't visit every temple and free himself. all the Giants in three days, but it turns out that with the song of time he can reset the three-day cycle at any point in the standard game. It is impossible to finish the game without visiting each of the four temples, as the moon is only accessible once the four Giants have been freed and have rarely stopped the moon's progress without entering the moon, there is no other way. To defeat Majora's Mask and complete the game for speedrunners, the dream strategy would be a way to access the moon without needing to visit any of the temples.
In theory, if you could really reach the interior of the moon, you could finish the game without doing much else, since no special items are needed to defeat Majora's Mask in the final boss fight in 2019, there was still no The way to get to the Moon early and the world record strategy still involved visiting each of the four temples and free the Giants. In April, sprinter Ennopp achieved a time of one hour, 15 minutes and 29 seconds using this route, which was the fastest time ever achieved. this stood as the world record until August 2019, when a completely crazy discovery opened the game to three Exodus Fash speedrunners and Mr. cheese worked together to discover a hidden debug menu within the game.
Debug menus are typically used by a game's development team to quickly and easily test specific things within the game without needing to play through the entire menu to get it immediately. Access to songs, quest items, and basically anything else that can be achieved during normal gameplay through these menus becomes inaccessible before a game is released and is usually only found using extreme manipulation of the game's internal values. a game. In the case of Majora's Mask, the debug menu can be used to award link quest items that would simulate completing each of the four temples, so it is possible to skip them.
This is all well and good in theory, but this wasn't exactly the most famous discovery since the method of accessing the debug menu was involved. among other steps, playing the flying song on the ocarina over 60 times, this totaled over ten minutes of playing the same song over and over again, which was considered boring to watch and annoying to play, the fact that the strategy exists. It's nothing short of amazing, but in practice it's not exactly a very exciting drag race; However, it is definitely faster and Ennop was the first sprinter to use it to beat the existing world record, achieving a time of 54 minutes on August 17.
In August the record became disputed by several but he landed safely again with Ennopp with a time of 48 minutes and 32 seconds achieved in September with access to the debug menu. The plays did not need to visit the temples but the strategy was still far away. If ideal, a hypothetical moon warp was still considered obviously superior, not only did it take him over 10 minutes to open the debug menu, but he still had to confront Skull Kid atop the clock tower and summon the four giants. . took longer and involved long, unskippable cutscenes, which is nice on the ears, especially in Ocarina of Time with its use of incorrect warps, since Majora's Mask borrows so much from its predecessor that it seems logical that the game would break in the same way and as fate would.
I guess it was a discovery in ocarina of time that led to the legendary moonwalk being found on October 27th. Glitch hunter glitches and stuff like that. He uploaded a YouTube video titled OoT Editing of Chest Contents. The video described a new exploit which he called Stale Reference Manipulation or SRM for short, this flaw is one of the most complicated things I have ever seen and it is way above me to even try to explain the inner workings that makes it possible but I will put a link in the description to a video of crashes and such that explain exactly what is happening, the backbone of the exploit focuses on what happens when a link contains an object that is no longer loaded due to the link crossing to another area load.
This is achieved by initiating a super swipe at the time of picking up an item and delaying holding the animation until the link has crossed to a different area, the value that tells the game which link it is supposed to hold no longer exists because it is you've loaded a new area and instead the value now points to something else, completely controlling exactly what the value points to. An extremely complicated process and something that requires a lot of experience and knowledge of the inner workings of the game. Software that can actually show the inner workings of the game is also required to see what is happening.
Obviously, other tricks and techniques are used. which are also quite complex and I definitely skimmed them, but I think the main point is that they are possible and speedrunners know how to use them to their advantage. Using SRM it is possible to change the contents of the chess, meaning you can exchange low value items for much more useful quest items that would otherwise take a long time to obtain, but the contents of the chest are not the only thing this cheat can do. modify and this is where it leads back to Majora's Mask on November 12. Exodus uploaded a video.
Titled Majora's Mask Moon warp, this was a tool-assisted demonstration of a way to walk to the moon using SRM. The main mechanics of the hack are the same as what we saw in Ocarina of Time, except now, instead of modifying the contents of the chest, they found a way to modify the data value of the owl statue, our statue recognition link You can save the game and the statue stores a value that lets the game know where to put the link when you load the save file this time instead of using a super slide to pick it up. a downloaded object, Exodus demonstrated a way to use these orphans to manipulate a downloaded rupee.
He would first use the fins to move the rep near a new loading zone. Now he used the fins again to move the rupee, but while he was in mid-flight, he loaded a new area and unloaded the rupee, then threw a fish and a bomb to manipulate some internal values related to the owl statue, then reloaded the room but The owl statue played six notes on the ocarina to change the value of the owl statue. His location was safe and then he saved the game when the game reloaded, placing him inside the Moon in front of Majora's Mask for the final boss fight.
Now this is all. OK, but all of this was meticulously programmed and executed using tools and access to the game's internal values. The question was whether this would be possible for a human in these cases where very precise movements must be made. Speedrunners need to find setups. Configurations are used. for many speedruns and are easy-to-follow steps to get the character in a particular position or facing a precise direction. That's why you'll often see speedrunners seemingly wasting time staring directly at a wall before running a set. maneuvers this is to make sure they are in the correct position for the next steps to come together to make extremely precise movement with this new moon.
The sprinters knew it was possible, but the actual steps were very complicated and so was the margin for error. small to simply copy the tool-assisted version so that players would get to work finding easy ways to make each step work when the steps are particularly complicated. The tools can be used for brute force solutions if we know the values of Link's position and facing direction. After completing the next step, we can enter those values into a program and let it run through many combinations of inputs until those values match. This can be done for each step until the complete configuration is discovered.
Surprisingly, it didn't take long for the setup to take place. It was found and the first race using this setup to break the existing world record was held just over a week later, on November 20, speedrunner Avi Joubert achieved a time of 57 minutes and 29 seconds, beating the old record by almost 20 minutes. The race was far from optimal, but it definitely opened the floodgates over the next few days. The record was lowered several times by several runners and the record landed again with ennopp with a time of 37 minutes and 16 seconds, but this would not last long. Several days later, a new way to travel to the moon was discovered that was much faster.
The original moon warp wasn't ideal as it required you to collect Zora's mask first which was a pretty significant time sync, the setup for the warp itself was also quite slow as you needed to collect a bunch of miscellaneous items. to affect the valuesinternally in the correct way. The new warp was much better in almost every way imaginable. First of all, it was much easier. He used the method that involved super sliding. through a loading zone to pick up an unloaded item, there was also no need for you to collect additional skins or items that you would otherwise skip, as we are now caught up with the current world record strategy, let's go over the full route from Getting started To understand the general principle of the race, the start of the race is quite simple.
Skull Kid has stolen our horse and ocarina and we are chasing them. After a quick walk through the forest, we fall into a cavern and face Skull Kid, who transforms link into a Deku bush. In this way our abilities are severely limited, especially those in combat, after a long scene, we must go through Lost Woods to the basement of the Clock Tower and then up to Clock Town as we enter Clock Town in the three-day cycle. Our goal starts from this point is to get the ocarina as quickly as possible so that we can return it to its original form.
The only way to get the ocarina back is to confront Skull Kid at the top of the clock tower which, as I mentioned earlier. is only possible at midnight on the third day, the clock tower would take approximately 54 minutes of real time to open, which is too long to wait. Fortunately, there are a couple of things we can do to speed things up. First, we head to the end to talk to Grandma, listening to one of her stories allows us to immediately fast forward time to the morning of the next day. listening to two stories takes us to the beginning of the third day, then we head to the trading post to talk to the style and the scarecrow dancing with the Scarecrow will fast forward time to night, at this point there is nothing else we can do to speed up time and there are approximately four minutes of real time that we must wait until midnight.
Fortunately, we have a few things we need to do in order. To prepare for the second half of the race, and this is a great opportunity to do so, there are two main things we need to prepare: The first is to collect enough rupees to buy bombs and bomb cheese. The second is to achieve the ability to use magic. The best way to farm rupees is outside of Clock Town, which is where we start collecting these lost fairies that we will have to give to the great fairy who will teach us how to use magic. It is normally not possible to leave Clock Town.
While Deku is bonding, the guard stops us and tells us that it's too dangerous to leave without a sword, but he's not very good at his job since you can simply run backwards to avoid him. Once at the terminal field, we go to each patch of bushes and collect. rupees, the total amount we need to collect is ninety to buy a bag of mom's bombs and cheese. After collecting the rupees, we return to the clock city to visit the great fairy and give her the lost fairy we collected earlier, and then she gives us the ability.
To use the magic that we will use when we face Skull Kid, we must then return to the clock tower, since the door is about to open on the way, we deposit our rupees in the bank, this is because when you reset the three. The daily cycle link loses all its rupees. The bank allows us to store and collect the rupees between cycles. It's possible to buy the bombs and bomb cheese now, but again, when the cycle restarts, we'll lose them anyway, so we have to wait. and then we buy them at the clock tower, go to the door and wait for it to open.
You're not supposed to get here that easily, but you can get to the platform using some backflips tricks to get there. Up here is usually doing a fairly long side quest to collect the Immune Tear that you need to give to the scrub shop that grants you access to his vase, but this all takes way too much time and can be completely avoided once the door opens. Head up the stairs to confront Skull Kid as soon as the battle begins. We use the keylink bubble burst ability to knock the ocarina out of Skull Kid's hand and pick it up immediately after the flashback scene where we relearn the song of time.
We play the song of time to restart the cycle after respawning at the clock tower. We talk to the happy mask seller who teaches us the healing song. This allows us to transform back into Hylian form. At this point, there is only one more thing we can do. What we must do before we are ready to perform the moon walk, which is to withdraw the rupees that we deposited previously and, using the bombs, choose the place where the moon warp is performed in the attached palace, to get there requires a Quite a long trip through the south. swamp, however, there is a much faster and cooler way to get there and that is by using grottoes.
Grottoes are these small caves that you can access through holes in the ground scattered around the world map. The grotto used in this speedrun is located right outside. from Clock Town and is home to a couple of dodongos. This is the great thing about the grottoes, although they are accessed from all over the world map, they are actually all stored on the same map screen, in fact, they are very, very close to each other, so if you can. find a way to climb the aggro wall so that you're only a fairly short jump away from another one and it just so happens that there's a pretty well known trick that can be used to climb walls and it's called hovering, it's really not so hard to make, but definitely looks cool.
Here we can use floating bombs to break through the outer wall of the grotto and use a damage boost from one of the dodongos to get out of bounds. Now we just need to know where to run. To get to the loading zone for the exit of the Deku Palace grotto, even if the other grottoes are not actually loaded, the exit zones still work, so if you end up in one of them, you will exit through the exit of that grotto instead of the other. You entered from the grotto and we reached the exit area, which is right inside the Deku Palace.
You'll notice that when the link comes out, there's no hole in the ground, which doesn't exactly make sense since it supposedly just came out that way. quite an interesting note because in the original Japanese version the entrance to the grotto was there, but when they released the North American version it was removed, but even though the entrance was removed, the grotto itself was still in the game and if you activate the exit area you can still exit the grotto as usual once inside the Deku Palace. We need to go outside to prepare for the moonwalk. The quickest way to do this is to get caught by one of the guards who throws you outside. the front of the palace and it is this same mechanic that is now used to fast run to walk directly to the moon.
Each guard has a value that tells it where to place the link when it gets trapped. In previous versions of SRM we saw the contents of the chest as Additionally, our statue data is manipulated, now speedrunners can change the value that affects where they place you when caught by a guard, so instead of placing you outside From the Deku Palace, you are placed somewhere else entirely, the setup for the Moon warp seems a bit strange on the surface, but everything here is affecting the internal values in a very specific way to get the desired result. Once back inside the Deku Palace, we load this room 7 times, you can see the objects in the background appearing and disappearing, which means the room. loading and unloading, then we enter the room and use some fancy bomb techniques to get to the upper platform, break the nearest pot and make sure to pick up the magic refill that drops, line up the right angle and perform these super nuva slides while we pick up the pot in the corner we delay the pickup until we cross the loading zone that unloads the room and then we pick up the unloaded object heading to the adjacent room we aim at the door frame to set the correct angle and then we turn the least amount possible for a single square to the left holding the target to maintain that angle, we move to the far corner of that section and throw the unloaded item now that the value for one of the guards has been set correctly and we just have to get past it.
Only one guard has been affected by this manipulation, so if any other guard catches Link, they will throw him back to the front of the palace using a couple of bombs to jump over the fences and we head to the fire corner to be. trapped by the guard who sends us to the Goron dungeon inside the moon, the blue warp zone is nearby and this takes us back to the center of the moon from here, if we talk to the boy wearing Majora's mask, we will be teleported to the final. The boss fight, the final fight with Majora's Mask has some moments that rely on LOC to get the best result, but overall it's pretty easy as of today, the world record is 28 minutes and 17 seconds set by an OP on December 7th. 47 minutes faster than the world record that stood in mid-2019, this is an incredible progression and the single percentage record is not the only category that will be affected by this discovery.
New deformations are being sought and new routes are being created for longer periods of time. Categories: The moon isn't the only place you can walk, and with different settings you can be sent to multiple different locations throughout the terminal. It's a very exciting time for Majora's Mask speedrunning and I'll definitely be keeping an eye on how this goes. Everything will unfold in the coming days. I want to thank a couple of Majora's Mask speedrunners for helping me with this video. First of all, thanks to Dope Zahra for teaching me the basics of how this speedrun works.
Please go and give it a follow. Twitch, the link will be in the description and also thanks to Real-Time Attack for allowing me to use footage of his races throughout the video. Thank you very much for watching, legends. I hope you're having a fantastic day and I'll see you around. in the next video
