has reshaped how the game is played completely records are being broken daily and new strategies are being developed as we speak the Zelda franchise is pretty well known for accommodating some of the most game breaking speedruns in existence these games aren't particularly known for being small and yet speedrunners can beat them in ridiculous times breadth of the wild can be beaten in 27 minutes Wind Waker can be beaten in just under an hour Ocarina of Time was recently beaten in less than 17 minutes he'll the world record for a Link to the Past is 1 minute and 31 seconds

wasn't exactly a long speedrun either with the world record sitting at 48 minutes and 32 seconds just a couple of months ago but now it has been taken to the next extreme with speedrunners able to beat the game in less than half an hour the key that unlocked this

massive

time game was an exploit called stale reference manipulation and it allows the player to warp to otherwise inaccessible locations extremely early in the game in the case of the new world record strategy after beginning the game we can almost immediately warp to the moon where the final boss fight takes place of course there is some trickery along the way to make it all possible and these technical strategies are never these simplest things to execute but all in all it's relatively easy to...

we are going to learn the guiding principles behind the new strategy despite the main exploit being pretty hard to grasp the routing of the run itself is pretty easy to understand so we will go through the entire thing from start to finish even if you've never played

has set a moon on a collision course with termina if left to its own devices the moon will land squarely on clock town completely obliterating the area as it would happen link the hero from ocarina of time has ventured into the lands in search for his fairy friend Navy through his travels he encounters a Skull Kid who has stolen and become possessed by

the Skull Kid Steel's links horse Epona as well as the ocarina of time and turns link into a Deku scrub before escaping link finds his way into Clock Town in the hunt for the Skull Kid he learns that the Skull Kid is waiting atop the clock tower an area that is only accessible on the eve of the carnival of time which takes place in three days at midnight on the third day the top of the clock tower opens and link faces off against the Skull Kid the

of course link cannot visit each temple and free all of the Giants in three days but it just so happens that with the song of time he can reset the three day cycle at any point in standard play it is impossible to finish the game without visiting each of the four temples as the moon is only accessible once the four Giants have been released and have rarely stopped the moon's progress without entering the moon there is no other way of defeating...

and completing the game for speedrunners the dream strategy would be a way to access the moon without needing to visit any of the temples in theory if you were to actually make it inside the moon you'd be able to finish the game without doing much else as there are no special items needed to defeat

in the final boss fight by 2019 there was still no way to access the moon early and the world record strategy still involved visiting each of the four temples and freeing the Giants in April the speed runner ennopp achieved a time of one hour 15 minutes and 29 seconds using this route which was the fastest time ever achieved this stood as the world record until August of 2019 when a completely insane

blew the game wide open three speed runners Exodus fash and mr. cheese worked together to uncover a hidden debug menu within the game debug menus are generally used by a game's development team in order to quickly and easily test specific things within the game without needing to play through the entire thing the menu can be used to immediately gain access to songs quest items and basically anything else that's attainable during a normal play through these menus are made inaccessible before a game is released and are generally only found using extreme manipulation of a game's internal values in the case of

Majora

's

Mask

the debug menu can be used to grant a link quest items that would simulate completing each of the four...
temples therefore making it possible to skip them this is all well and good in theory but this wasn't exactly the most celebrated

discovery

as the method for accessing the debug menu involved among other steps playing the song of soaring on the ocarina more than 60 times this totalled more than ten minutes of playing the same song over and over again which was seen as both boring to watch and annoying to play the fact that the strategy exists at all is nothing short of amazing but in practice it doesn't exactly make for a very exciting speedrun it is definitely faster though and ennop was the first speed runner to use it to beat the existing world record achieving a time of 54 minutes on the 17th of august the record went on to be contested by various but it landed securely back with ennopp with a time of 48 minutes and 32 seconds achieved in September with access to the debug menu plays didn't need to visit the temples but the strategy was still far from being ideal a hypothetical moon warp was still seen as obviously superior not only did it take more than 10 minutes to open the debug menu but she was still required to face off against the Skull Kid atop the clock tower and call upon the four Giants this took up more time and involved lengthy unskipable cutscenesthat's nice ear ease especially in ocarina of time with the use of wrong warps given that

same way and as fate would have it it was a

discovery

in ocarina of time that led to the fabled moon walk being found on the 27th of October glitch hunter glitches and stuff uploaded a YouTube video titled OoT editing chest contents the video outlined a new exploit he called stale reference manipulation or SRM for short this glitch is one of the most complicated things I've seen and it's well above me to even attempt to explain the inner workings that make it possible but I will put a link in the description to a video of glitches and stuff explaining just what is happening the backbone of the exploit centers around what happens when link holds an object that is no longer loaded due to link crossing into another loading zone this is accomplished by starting a super slide at the moment of picking up an object and delaying the holding animation until link has crossed into a different area the value that tells the game what link is supposed to be holding no longer exists as a new area has loaded and instead the value now directs to something else entirely controlling exactly what the value directs to is an extremely complicated process and something that needs a ton of expertise and knowledge of the inner workings of the game software that can actually show the inner workings of the game is also required in order to see what is happening obviously there are other tricks and techniques used that are also pretty complex and I definitely skimmed over them but I think the...
main point is that they are possible and speedrunners know how to use them to their advantage using SRM it is possible to change the contents of chess meaning you could swap out items of little value for much more useful quest items items that would otherwise take a long time to attain but chest contents isn't the only thing this trick can modify and this is where it leads back to

on the 12th of November Exodus uploaded a video titled

Moon warp this was a tool-assisted demonstration of a way to walk to the moon by using SRM the core mechanics of the trick are the same as what we saw in Ocarina of Time except now instead of modifying chest contents they found a way to modify the value of the owl statue data our statues aware link can save the game and the statue stores a value that lets the game know where to place link when you load the save file this time instead of using a super slide to pick up an unloaded object Exodus demonstrated a way to use these orphans to manipulate an unloaded rupee first he would use the fins to move the repeat near a new loading zone now he used the fins again to move the rupee but while it was in mid-flight he loaded a new area and unloaded the rupee he then dropped a fish and bomb to manipulate some inner values relating to the owl statue he then reloaded the room but caught the Zora fins on the same frame it was loaded he then made his way back to the owl statue played six notes on the ocarina to change...
the value of the owl statue was safe his location as and then saved the game when the game was reloaded it placed him inside the Moon facing against

for the final boss fight now this is all well and good but this was all meticulously programmed and executed using tools and access to the game's inner values the question was would this ever be possible by a human in these cases where very precise movements need to be performed speedrunners need to find setups setups are used for many speedruns and they are easy to follow steps in order to get the character to be in a particular position or be looking in a precise direction this is why you'll often see speedrunners seemingly waste time looking directly at a wall before performing a series maneuvers this is to make sure they are in the correct position for the following steps to all come together to pull off an extremely precise move with this new moon warp speedrunners knew it was possible but the actual steps were very complicated and the margin for error too small to simply copy the tool-assisted version so players got to work with finding easy ways in order to make each step work when steps are particularly complicated tools can be used to brute force solutions if we know the values of Link's position and facing direction to complete the next step we can input those values into a program and let it run through many combinations of inputs until those values are matched this can be done for each...
step until the full setup is discovered surprisingly it didn't take long for a setup to be found and the first run to use this setup to break the existing world record was performed just over a week later on the 20th of November the speedrunner avi Joubert achieved a time of 57 minutes and 29 seconds breaking the old record by almost 20 minutes the run was far from optimal but it definitely opened the floodgates over the next couple of days the record was lowered multiple times by various runners with the record again landing with ennopp with a time of 37 minutes and 16 seconds but this wouldn't last long as several days later a brand new way of warping to the moon was discovered that was much faster the original moon warp wasn't ideal as it required you to collect the Zora

mask

first which was a pretty significant time sync the setup for the warp itself was also pretty slow as you needed to collect a bunch of miscellaneous items in order to affect the internal values in the correct way the new warp was much better in almost every conceivable way first and foremost it was much easier it used the method that involved super sliding through a loading zone to pick up an unloaded object it also didn't require you to collect any extra

s or items that you'd otherwise skip as we have now caught up to the current world record strategy let's go through the entire route from the beginning in order to understand the overall principle of the run the beginning...
of the run is pretty straightforward Skull Kid has stolen our horse and ocarina and we are in pursuit after a quick trek through the woods we fall into a cavern and confront the Skull Kid who transforms link into a Deku scrub in this form our abilities are severely limited especially those in combat after a lengthy cutscene we need to head through the Lost Woods into the Clocktower basement and then up to Clock Town itself when we enter clock town the three day cycle begins our goal from this point is to get the ocarina as quickly as possible so that we can return link to his original form the only way to retrieve the ocarina is to face the Skull Kid at the top of the clock tower which as I previously mentioned is only possible at midnight on the third day it would take approximately 54 minutes of real time for the clock tower to open which is far too much time to wait luckily there are a couple of things we can do to speed things up first we head to the end to talk to the grandmother listening to one of her stories allows us to immediately move time forward to the morning of the next day listening to two stories gets us to the beginning of the third day we then head to the Trading Post to speak with the style and scarecrow dancing with the Scarecrow will move time forward to the evening at this point there is nothing else we can do to speed time up and there is approximately four minutes of real time we need to wait until midnight thankfully we do have a few things we need...
to do in order to prepare for the second half of the run and this is a great opportunity to do so there are two main things we need to prepare the first is collecting enough rupees to buy bombs and bomb cheese the second is to attain the ability to use magic the best way to farm rupees is outside of Clock Town which is where we start heading on the way we collect these stray fairy which we will need to give to the great fairy that will teach us how to use magic it's not normally possible to leave clock town as Deku link as the guard stops us and tells us it's too dangerous to leave without a sword but he's not very good at his job as you can simply run backwards to bypass him once in termina field we go around to each patch of bushes and collect rupees the total amount we need to collect is ninety to afford a bomb bag and mom cheese after the rupees have been collected we head back to clock town to visit the great fairy and give her the stray fairy we collected earlier she then gives us the ability to use magic which we will use when we face off with the Skull Kid we then need to head back to the clock tower as the door is about to open on the way we deposit our rupees into the bank this is because when you reset the three day cycle link loses all of his rupees the bank allows us to store and collect the rupees between cycles it is possible to buy the bombs and bomb cheese now but again when the cycle is reset we'll just lose them anyway so we need to wait and...
buy them afterwards back at the clock tower we head to the door and wait for it to open you are not supposed to be able to get up here this easily but you can get up to the platform by using some backflip trickery the way to get up here normally is to do a pretty lengthy side quest to collect the immunes tear that you need to give to the business scrub who grants you access to his flower pad but this all takes way too long and can be bypassed completely once the door opens we head up to the stairs to face the Skull Kid as soon as the battle begins we used a key links bubble blast ability to knock the ocarina out of the skull kids hand and pick it up immediately after the flashback cutscene where we relearn the song of time we play the song of time to restart the cycle after respawning back in the clock tower we speak to the happy

mask

salesman who teaches us the song of healing this allows us to transform back into Hylian form at this point there is only one more thing we need to do before we are ready to perform the moonwalk which is to withdraw the rupees we deposited earlier and by the bombs and bomb choose the location the moon warp is performed in is deputy palace to get there a pretty lengthy journey is required through the southern swamp however there is a far quicker far more genius way of getting there and that's through the use of grottoes grottoes are these small caves you can access through the holes in the ground scattered across the world map the grotto used...
in this speedrun is located just outside of Clock Town and houses a couple of dodongos here's the cool thing about grottoes even though they are accessed from all over the world map they are actually all stored on these same map screen in fact they are very very close to each other so if you can find a way to scale the wall of aggro so you're only a pretty short jump away from another one and it just so happens that there is a pretty well-known trick that can be used to scale walls and that's called a hover it's really not that hard to do but it definitely looks cool here we can use bombchu hovers to clip inside the outer wall of the grotto and use a damage boost from one of the dodongos to clip out of bounds now we just need to know where to run in order to hit the loading zone for the Deku Palace grotto exit even though the other grottoes aren't actually loaded the exit zones still work so if you end up in one of them you'll leave through the exit of that grotto instead of the one you entered from the grotto we hit the exit zone for is right inside of the Deku Palace you'll notice that when link comes out there is no hole in the ground which doesn't exactly make sense as he supposedly just left through there this is a pretty interesting note because in the original Japanese release the entrance to the grotto was there but when they released the North American version it was removed but even though the entrance was removed the actual grotto...
itself was still left in the game and if you trigger the exit zone you can still exit the grotto as per normal once inside the Deku Palace we need to exit back outside in order to set up for the moonwalk the fastest way to do so is to get caught by one of the guards who throws you outside to the front of the palace and it's this very same mechanic that speed run is now used to walk directly to the moon each guard has a value that tells it where to place link when he gets caught in the previous versions of SRM we saw chest contents as well as our statue data get manipulated now speedrunners can change the value that affects where you get placed when you get caught by a guard so instead of being placed outside of the Deku Palace you are placed somewhere else entirely the setup for the Moon warp seems a bit strange on the surface but everything here is affecting the internal values in a very specific way to get the desired outcome once back inside the Deku Palace we load this room 7 times you can see the objects in the background appearing and disappearing which signifies the room loading and unloading we then enter the room and use some fancy techniques with bombs in order to get up to the upper platform we break the closest pot and make sure to pick up the magic refill it drops we line up the correct angle and perform these super slide nuva while picking up the pot in the corner we delay the pickup until we cross the loading zone which unloads the room and then pick up the...
unloaded object heading into the adjacent room we target the doorframe to set up the correct angle and then turn the smallest amount possible for a single frame to the left holding target to keep that angle we move into the far corner of that section and throw the unloaded object now the value for one of the guards has been correctly set and we just need to make it over there only a single guard has been affected by this manipulation so if any other guard catches link they will throw him back out the front of the palace using a couple of bomb hovers to jump over the fences we make our way into the fire corner to be caught by the guard who sends us to the Goron dungeon inside of the moon the blue warp zone is nearby and this leads us back to the central hub of the moon from here if we speak to the child wearing

does have a few moments that relies on LOC for the best outcome but overall it's pretty straightforward as of today the world record stands at 28 minutes and 17 seconds set by an OP on the 7th of December this is 47 minutes quicker than the world record that stood midway through 2019 this is an insane progression and the only percent record isn't the only category that will be affected by this
