right now stocks around the globe have tanked due to concerns over the

coronavirus

and Dow futures are down more than 800 points right now CNBC's Dominic Chu is standing by with more on this Tom what do we know all right so Mika what we have right now are

like you said precipitously precipitously selling off and what this has to do with is the spread of the

coronavirus

now we've known for quite some time that the Chinese cases have been escalating but now it seems as though investors have turned their attention to what's happening overall with cases outside of China to countries in particular guys are the ones in focus South Korea which is now 750 cases or more of confirmed

coronavirus

which makes South Korea the most infected country outside of mainland China also what's happening in the continental European situation Italy that particular country has now seen over a hundred and thirty cases and five deaths tied to this particular virus that means the European side of things are seeing that kind of spread as well so between South Korea and Italy and the escalating numbers there that's the reason why you're seeing

sell out the way that they are the issue now is whether or not we do see a situation where governments intervene even more and that's what traders and investors will be looking looking closely for are they taking any further steps in places like Italy or the...

surrounding countries in Europe and what exactly is South Korea doing to help stem the rise in the infections there we've already heard that the government has invoked some emergency powers to allow them if they need to to restrict travel and also inject more money in the financial system in case things go really bad but for right now we've heard some anecdotal evidence in places like Italy and South Korea that grocery stores are running low on supplies because people want to stock up all of those are reasons why folks there there is this kind of a market sell-off we'll continue to monitor it but that's the reason why you're seeing
