Make Double Sided Rings out of Coins - Tips for Beginners

ring out of a regular quarter. This coin does not have any silver content, so there is nothing special about it other than the fact that it is. It's going to be a ring when I'm done now when I say

double

sided

ring I mean this is from Alabama or the state of Alabama, this is going to be on the outside of the ring the word Alabama 1819 uh the scroll underneath it I'm going to try to get in there, the Spirit of Courage says on it and also, obviously, the vegetation on either side, this will be on the outside of the ring and, you know, the United States.

The US quarter will be on the inside of the ring, so I thought I'd turn on the camera and take you for a ride. It's pretty simple, now you'll need some tools to fix this. and you probably don't have this one at home. The most important thing is that you need a mandrel, a jeweler's mandrel, this one is solid steel, it has marking indicators and labels so you know what size you are on. You will need something to drill a hole in the center. your ring I'm going to use a cheap punch and die set. I bought this one from Harbor Freight. I'll also link it below. Where I bought this. This one keeps it simple and easy for me. You can drill a hole in the center of the ring and you'll be fine, so you don't necessarily have to have this, but you're going to need something to drill a hole in the center of that coin, you're going to need some sandpaper. of some kind I like to use these sand blocks because they are foamy, they are flexible, they are very cheap, you can get these Lowe's Home Depot Walmart wherever you need a standard hammer of any type and what I am going to use the easiest way, is a 3/4 inch PVC pipe.

It has to be schedule 40, so

sure you get the thick material, not the thin material or it won't work. It doesn't necessarily have to have a cap, but I happen to have one lying around, so I put one on mine and let's get started. I'll take you for a ride and show you how to do it here. Go now, before you start manipulating this quarter. I want to talk to you briefly about the law. I know half of you watching this probably think this is illegal. What is illegal is taking a quarter and manipulating it. turning it into what appears to be a 50 cent coin or a dollar, something of greater value than it was in the first place, that's called fraud, fraudulent intent and that's illegal, so let's start now, what I like to do is , first of all, take the uh D or the punch and place it on the outside of the coin and look up so that what you're seeing here around this tint is what will be on the outside of your ring.

I know this is not the exact coin that uh I showed you at the beginning, but this is just to give you an idea and what I do is I put it here. Look at it, uh, make it look as sweet as possible, making sure I get what I want there and then, uh, Trace. around it once you've done it you slide it over your punch and die set you know they're separate this just slides in okay you put the D on it and then you punch it out and now that I have uh my coin centered and ready to rock, I'm just going to hit it with a hammer, Wham, and that'll pop it out and no problem, okay, cool, once you've got it there centered and ready to rock, you're just I'm going to give it a Nice shot right there.

I'm using a little bit heavier hammer because when you hit it the first time, you're going to put a nice little chunk in, hold it nice, hold it steady and hit it, just like that. We're done, it's going to be a little stiff, don't be too hard on you and I'll follow it up with another punch or something to push it all the way in and so it was easy, uh, much better than drilling it anyway I was planning on making a lot of these

rings

, so I went and bought the Dy and that's how easy it is, he keeps it very simple, nice and clean, that's fine too, once you've got the coin out, you're going to throw it away. over the top of your mandrel with the side you want on the outside of the ring facing up, you want to look at the outside right here, then you're just going to lay your ant mandrel flat, so take your 3/4 inch PVC pipe and you're going to place right on top of it and you're going to start hitting it with a hammer slowly and easily and as you lower it down the chuck it's going to widen and once you lower it down. at about a size, oh probably about a size eight, size seven or eight, it's going to look like this and as you can see we've expanded it pretty substantially by about a size 8 and you see that gap right there between the uh the ring and the chuck uh to correct that as we go through the lot we're going to remove this just take a hammer or a mallet, a rubber mallet, whatever it takes a little bit to remove it there, oh, there it goes, so you go to take uh, instead of going through it again the same way, just turn it over, okay, so that the narrow side is now facing down and then proceed as usual, take your pipe, put it back and hit it back. down and this. it will reduce you to about a size 11 10 and 1/2 11 when you're about to a 10 and 1/2 or 11 it will look like this and you can see we're about a size 11 and We have the ring bent all the way very close to the mandrel, like this that now that you've done it, you're there.

I mean, now let's take this bad boy down and take a really close look. You know, once you get to this point, this top edge here is the edge that we drilled and obviously this outside edge is the outside of the corner. You can see all the rivets there. You can also see how it sticks out here. around this edge every which way, so we're going to take some sandpaper and we're going to file the inside, these are a little sharp over here, simple, very easy, look at this, you take your sponge or your sandpaper sand it and you just put your ring on, you just sand it, it really doesn't take much time, okay, we got it sanded nice and sweet, it's not sharp anymore, it won't cut you now if you wanted to go wider than this, right?

I already told you this is about a size 11 if you wanted to be wider than this, well basically all you're going to do is keep hitting it, with your PVC, keep hitting it, you'll be able to stretch this up to about a 12, maybe even 12 1/2 uh, but I would advise you know the inside here, the side that we just sanded, make sure you sand it before you start stretching this ring because it will have a tendency to split and crack and if you don't want that and that's so good like right there, I mean, you can go right there, but I don't like this outside edge here where the rivets are, it sticks out.

You know what I mean, so I'm going to sand this edge right here with sandpaper all the way around and it's pretty simple, just take the sandpaper, hold the ring and at like 45, you're going to start this action. Okay, I know I'm blocking it and you can't really see it well, but you're just going to sand it at 45 and try to slowly work your way into that lip and then when you get it all the way around. nice and smooth, it won't stick out that way and I also like to sand this 45 side, try removing any, I just like a little bit of an angle, you can see a picture right here.

I'm going to show you what this angle looks like after I've sanded it, how it's really smooth and attractive, there you see it and that's it. I mean, now you can detail it with sanding and then When you're done, after you're done, you're going to put a nice little coat of uh, put a nice coat of polish on it and uh, you're ready to not be so bad, anyway , this is how you do it, this is how I do it.
