and we'll start with comments from the coach thank you I'm good ready thank you let's start with the questions from the student athletes. Up here first Pat eeden Rob with the Associated Press Angel I know it hurts now, but you mentioned what a wild ride this team has been on over the last year. Can you describe what it meant to you? How has it been? For you, both positive and negative, yes, we, we have seen it all this year.
lsu kim mulkey loss to iowa in elite 8 postgame flau jae angel reese van lith
We've been through a lot of adversity, so I'm beyond proud of this team. We don't have that much debt. we had some injuries at some point I took some time away from the team um so many things happened this year and so many things hit us and we never retired and just being able to go out tonight and give it our all for 40 minutes we didn't We fell short but we have to maintain head up Andre Adon with ESPN for Angel we saw you come in I think you fell on the cameras uh in the second quarter um did you sprain your ankle? would be the First question, did that affect you for the rest of the game?

More Interesting Facts About,

lsu kim mulkey loss to iowa in elite 8 postgame flau jae angel reese van lith...

Yeah, if it affected you, yeah, I sprained my ankle on one of the cameras, um and I mean, I'm tough, so I tried to play it, of course, and this is something. That's been going on for a while, but I played it and I'm not going to make that an excuse for the rest of my game, go ahead, Michael Cobell WBZ TV in Baton Rouge for Haley and for If Caitlyn is such a hard cover, I mean , obviously you were fighting all night, but just the challenge that she presents, yeah, Caitlyn is very skilled, she's a great player, she made some tough shots and there's not much you can do. about some of the three that she hit and I think you know her role, the team around her that plays a role, they did a good job of executing their role so ultimately they played better than us and that's what which was right behind NOP. thanks hello, sorry, uh M Adler from the following FL J wanted to ask specifically, it just came out of that last question.
lsu kim mulkey loss to iowa in elite 8 postgame flau jae angel reese van lith
You know you had some possessions against Caitlyn in the fourth quarter. You were able to force some turnovers because of some mistakes. You know, taking on that confrontation and trying to help start a career. I mean, you study the film of it. I think my length bothered her a little. I am aggressive. She just wasn't afraid. You know what I say when she plays with a player like that, you have to look him in the eye and really accept that challenge. I just tried to force her to go to the left. I know she wanted to step back and my length, you know?

You can tease her a little bit, but you know? I have to be better, Howard, I'll do the next one. Congratulations on the season you have had. If I could listen to you about Angel and the type of leadership that she has provided to this team and Angel, can you explain to me what that meant? to see what FJ was able to do in a game like this, you know, she scored 23 points and was a factor, bro, let me tell you something, y'all might have her opinion on Angel Reese, uh, but you don't know her . put your hand like you don't know Angel Reese, I know Angel Reese, I know the real Angel Reese and the person I see every day is a strong person, he is a loving and caring person, brother, the crown he wears is heavy, bro, she's the type. as a teammate that will make you believe in yourself the leap I took for my freshman year in sophomore year Angel gave me that confidence to go be a dog playing next to a dog every day and you know just by seeing how the media ridicules her We go through our problems, but that's my sister here and I'm as proud of her as the media, how they like to twist her and call her a villain and all that, they don't know, Angel bro and me.
I'm happy to be able to play with her. I can be close to her presence. Her energy is different. She just makes me a better player. She makes me a better player. And that's what great players do. I'll say something too. I think you know that Angel is one of the toughest people I've ever been around. Facts. People speak hate in her life. I have never seen people wishing bad things on someone as much as they do on her and that doesn't affect her, she comes to practice. every day she lives her life every day she lives how she wants to live and she doesn't let anyone change that and you know that's the key to life right there, don't reach for it, let me say it again.
You guys don't get to Angel Reese so maybe you want to give up on throwing in the towel because you're wasting her energy so Angel is one of the toughest people I've ever been around here go ahead uh D seski outkick.com . Angel, do you have any ideas about your future plans in basketball? I'll make a decision when I'm ready, jacqu, did you say wab TV and Baton Rouge? You will need the players in the third quarter, what do you think? it went wrong there, looks like your little snake bitten balls just came out of the rim and some tough turnovers and stuff, yeah that's pretty much it, they outscored us in the third quarter.
I think it was just a turnover experience like you said, I guess. that on the chin I feel like I have to be better uh just communicate better with my team, get into the offense better, like I have to be better. I think as a team, that third quarter, you know, they tanked and never got back up. per se, you know what I'm saying, but they were just little mistakes, all that, everything we do every day in practice, you know, bad pass here, turnover here, defense, bad execution, transition, you know what what I'm saying, so it will be things. that we have to clean up, but we take it on the chin, what's wrong, okay, go ahead, I didn't have you here, you had your hand up, go behind and then you did it, Ben Pikman of the athletic um, this is for the Angel of the flag , apparently. like Angel, when you fouled out, you walked to the bench and put your arm around it and FL put his arm around you. um, what did you guys say at that moment and what was that moment like for both of you?
Yeah, I just told him just keep leading the team um and don't give up and keep fighting. I mean, f has done a great job when I'm down or not having my best game, being able to have a player as a teammate like f as a sophomore, just as a sophomore. Step up and just lead the team and everything she's led the team all year, so we've had that relationship and just being able to talk to her in that moment was great, yeah, she was just like they said, I was just holding. I'm responsible, you know, she was telling him, cheer us up, cheer us up, keep going, you know what I'm saying, that's all I could do right there.
Erica L aala with CBS sports.com Angel, this question will be for you if you are. willing to share what was going through your mind when you heard your two teammates right here on the of just taking the opportunity to really stand up for yourself and what your journey has been like that we can't see. I really can't defend myself. I mean, I have great teammates. I have a great support system. I have my hometown. I have a family that defends me. I can't really talk about things just because I try. ignore and just try to stay strong like I've been through so much, I've seen so much, I've been attacked so many times, death threats, I've been sexualized, I've been threatened, I've been so many things.
And I've stood my ground every time and I just try to stand my ground for my teammates because I don't want them to see me down and not be there for them, so I always want to know that I'm still there. Human like all this has happened since I won the national championship and I said the other day I haven't had peace since then and it sucks but I still wouldn't change, I wouldn't change anything and I would still sit here and say it's me unapologetically, I'm always going to let Mark and be who I am and stick to that and hopefully the little girls that look up to me and hopefully give them some kind of inspiration that they know that hopefully this isn't it. hard and all the things that come at you, but keep being who you are, keep waking up every day, keep Mo being motivated, keep being who you are, stay alert, don't back down and just be confident, this is for uh cam, what? you can talk? a bit, let's wait until they leave, sure, just players at the moment, thanks, sorry, this for Ang, can I ask the same question for Angel and you three?
What is the impact of the LSU Iowa rivalry on women's basketball? with

angel

, thank you um, I think it's great for the sport to be able to be a part of history, um, like I said, no matter which direction it went, um tonight, I know this was going to be a night for the ages and just being able to be a part of history it's great to play against another great player of course it's always amazing when our audience grows and I'm sure a lot of different people saw us tonight so I'm happy to be here. keep elevating women's sports, not just women's basketball, but just women's sports in general, clj yeah, um, it's good for the game.
U women's basketball has reached new heights. I'm happy to be a part of this, happy to be a part of You know, it's not every time you see players like Caitlyn Clark and upset Rees, you know what I'm saying and I'm blessed last year. I was a freshman watching everything this year. I'm a sophomore capable of um. you know contribute next year I'm going to leave my mark and grow the game Haley yeah like they said I mean you know it's an honor to be a part of this it was an honor to be in that moment um and the best thing about rivalries . is that they don't finish, so LSU and Iowa will meet again and, you know, we will have another chance, the last one, the last one is here,

angel

, it seemed like you had a nice exchange with the k in the handshake line.
Would you mind sharing what you think, you know what you told her, yeah, she just told me to keep being a great player and I told her to keep being a great player too and keep raising the game and win, thank you. To the student athletes for their time this week. We appreciate it. Thank you. Good job. Good job. It seemed like where you're from, sorry, yeah, identify the name and affiliation, sorry, M Adler from the next, two quick questions, what went into the strategy in terms of how you wanted to defend, uh, Caitlyn Clark, um, and then I was also wondering if you knew what it looked like. you had a long hug and some nice boards for after the game in the handshake line just wondering if you wanted to share what those were well there's not much strategy you have to protect her no one else seems to be able to protect her.
We didn't even defend it last year when we beat him. She's just a generational player and she just makes everyone around her better. That's what the greats do. I think they had a girl who scored 21 and 18. She had 12 assists. Clark isn't going to beat you on her own, it's what she does to make those other teammates better that helps her score points and helps them score points to beat you. What did I tell him? I said, "I'm glad you're leaving." I've never seen anything like that here before and then up here Michael Cobble WBZ TV uh were you surprised by the whole pace of that first quarter?
Yeah, talking to my team we played at their pace and, um, we finished the first quarter. with the lead but falling back first I think their pace dictated that third quarter. I think that rhythm really affected us in the third quarter. Kim Nancy Armor USA Today reports on how limited or limited Angel was and can you talk about the performance she had despite that injury. I didn't ask anyone, you know how bad the sprain is and honestly I'm assuming it's the same ankle she sprained in the SEC tournament, but you're in the heat of the moment, you know? she's playing, um, the coach never came to see me to give me any details, you know, so I don't know that angel or I either of us would make an excuse that the fact that she was limping was the reason why that we lost the game.
Dan zesky outkick.com coach your The team was not on the court during the national anthem. The first part was a conscious decision on your part. The second. Can you tell what the team was doing during that time? Honestly, I don't even know when the anthem was played. we have a routine where we're on the court and then they come out at the 12 minute mark, that's um, I just don't know, we go in and do our pregame stuff, um, sorry, I hear, that's nothing done intentionally, uh jacqu Did you say that w TV and Baton Rouge, coach, your players had some very passionate and animated comments a moment ago about the angel and the treatment and, um, criticism, all that?
Just your thoughts on what you just heard. I'm going to assume something here now. I'm going to assume they're talking about attacks on social media and I don't see all that. I don't use social networks. I thought it was touching. I thought it was touching. They're young people that are on social media and that's their teammate and, um, it seemed like they wanted to get that off their chest, so I just heard like you guys read Darcy with the Ben Rouge defender and coach when look back on this season. Do you think you will remember and feel more proud?
I'm going to feel very proud. I'm going to think about the little things we overcame that put us in an

elite

eight. You are one. game far from coming backto the final four and eventually I'm going to think about how we got here, how we got here, what did we do as a team and as a staff to get to this moment? Basically, I guess what I'm telling you is, you learn, you learn, I learn every day as a coach. I look at this stat sheet and put in a lot of things. of little notes down there and I'll file them away and think about it when the emotion of a

loss

wears off.
We shot the ball, y'all almost 20 times more than them, so that's the pace I'm talking about and then If you look at that second and especially the third quarter, where we just missed shots, you'll analyze things like that and, yeah, I could probably tell you a lot of things, you'll look at the X's and O's, you'll flip the ball just a little bit. a little harder right now, depth, I mean you could sit and talk all day about the game, only one team finishes the season happy and boy, we had to do that last year and someone will be able to do it this year, but everyone the others will come here and be sad and you know there's nothing wrong with being sad if you're not sad that means you didn't invest much so those tears are tears of investment P Rob from Associated Press Kim your players I've talked about how since a calendar year ago they have become world famous for better and worse, how that has strengthened their team, changed these young women and what it means to them, the group that is going, that will come back and move forward.
I've been doing this for almost 40 years, that doesn't count as a player, we have changed people, we have changed and we have changed in many good ways, and these young people will have the memory of being part of something that was. It's great tonight as many of them were a part of winning a championship last year. I can't tell you how good women's basketball is now. That's why I wish this game had been a final four game. Wow, it sure was. good for an Elite 8 game and we are proud to be a part of it, good, bad, indifferent, our world, our world has changed a lot when you talk about what they were talking about social media, I honestly don't realize. what those kids see, hear, and even engage with when it comes to social media.
I know things when I need to know them from coaches or administrators or I need to address things, but no, I don't invest in any of that. I just don't know so if you want me to know something you better send it to me otherwise I don't see it unless a family member or a team member or someone you know lets me know here and then the last in the middle come on hello coach Asar Johnson from MV Sports um I wanted to ask you on Haley van LIF it's clearly her last last game um if you could and I'm pretty sure she had a night that she had um if you just You talk about the contribution she brought to this team and everything she has done because one game does not define anything.
I'm pretty sure if anyone can talk about Haley and her contribution, you can. I hope it's not her last game, but it is me. I am proud to have been her coach for a year. You know she has another year if she wants to come back. Angel too. Uh, I know they have to make decisions, but we talk about that a lot on the men's side. about one and done well and how terrible it is to know that you go through a period that you can't have, you know these players for long periods of time, man, they are themselves, they are going to take care of themselves, they look like, they are all different and they have to do what they have to do Haley van

lith

came to LSU after being a great shooter and shot a lot at Louisville had great success was on good teams but wanted to graduate in three years with a degree in finance wanted to experience everything I guess the things that she saw from afar with our championship last year and that she took that leap of faith and left her comfort zone in Louisville, you don't see many players do that when she was such an important piece to their puzzle um she has agreed to learn a new position uh taking fewer shots our last game against UCLA I thought his stats were very good but I'm an old point guard and I see all that um forever indebted to Haley and his selfless play for coming to LSU to play with a lot of great players and learning a new position, the last one moving on, just the growth we've seen in FL ID again an affiliation Michael Cobell WBZ TV and bat R the growth we've seen in Fage and for Angel to sit there and say he knows the qualities of leadership you showed this year, what does that mean for your team to come back next year?
Well, these three young women were elected captains and for FL to be selected as one of the captains. a sophomore, sums it up pretty well, she's just a Joy person, she just plays with a lot of heart and she's learning to become a leader at a young age and I'm glad I got to be a coach, coach, thank you. Thank you very much for your time this week. You are welcome.
