May 31, 2021
Love Island star Demi Jones shocked her fans on social media when she announced she had been diagnosed with

thyroid

cancer

after discovering a lump in her throat. She underwent surgery to remove the tumor, but she still has a big journey ahead of her, yes, at 22 years old. The old reality TV star is now raising awareness about the disease and the importance of scheduling medical appointments if she has any concerns about her health despite the pan

demi

c, she joins us now, how is she? Oh, I'm fine, thanks, it's been a little difficult. thing to process it's all very new to me everything is happening very fast um but I'm fine that's the main thing

good

and that's a huge relief you look incredibly healthy thank you we can see that there is a slight mark yes, from the surgery right above your microphone In fact, it's obviously been a very scary time for you, Demi, but one of the things that I think is quite worrying is that you were originally due to be seen last September, that date because of the lockdown due to the pan

demi

c kept coming.

I moved, didn't I? Honestly, every month they canceled it and I was so close to going private and paying because I was so scared and my stepdad has

cancer

so I knew I had to push for appointments. canceled and they finally saw me in April and when I was seeing they did my ultrasound my blood tests came back absolutely fine and they were going to send me on my way but I knew from him that I had to order more so there are more scans you can do , tests that you can do and they offered to drain the fluid and that was what turned out to be potentially cancerous so you really have to learn the lesson from this is that you have to be very persistent exactly and I think that also At my age, I think most people would just accept that fact and say, "Okay, I'm leaving or whatever," which I did with the original scan in 2019, what would have happened if you hadn't done that and if you'd just let these? the appointments are going well, unfortunately I would have had to live with that and I think if I hadn't ordered those additional tests I wouldn't have found out if it was cancerous either, so they literally would have sent me back.

More Interesting Facts About,

What's quite worrying is that and uh, you don't know either because you went to the Love Island villa in South Africa at the beginning of last year, but as you say, you were scanned just before that and it showed up all clear, yeah. so a doctor can tell you how long you may have had the cancer apparently

thyroid

cancer also grows very slowly and he thinks I've had this for years and years and I had no idea and obviously I've had this lump for Anyway, two years since 2019 since I noticed it, but that's when it came out, so it's probably been underlined for years and years.

I had no idea it was a tumour, so a scan at the end of 2019 showed it was clear and then the appointments changed. for seven months until they finally scan you again, which shows that you're clear, yes, you push for the fluid to be tested, it's cancerous and you had surgery to remove it. Dr. Hillary is here with us, I mean, that's really concerning. Know? If Demi hadn't pushed for proper testing, she would be sitting here. Well, she wouldn't be sitting here now because she wouldn't have come to talk to us about it. Cancer grows into a number of things here, it's easy to assume that because you're young it's unlikely to be cancer, you can never assume that and we know people have found it difficult to see their GP during pandemic. appointments were delayed or unable to get an appointment and in turn GPs have sometimes been reluctant to refer to secondary care for further investigation, so luckily Ademi had slow growing papillary thyroid cancer , but that is no consolation.

The lump needs to be examined, I mean, most lumps that appear in people are pretty harmless, benign sebaceous cysts, something like that, but in the neck, where it's attached to the thyroid, it's very quick and it's pretty easy to diagnose. that there is something there that needs to be reassuringly investigated further. uh demi thyroid cancer is one of the easiest to survive, oh yes, yes, my consultant assured me that it is super treatable, but it's just the fact that I have to go on this journey now and I wouldn't have known it completely, so that's how it is.
It's scary and I think I also want to raise awareness among girls because I think thyroid cancer is most common in people between the ages of 30 and 50, but mainly in their 60s and 60s. of thyroid cancer that you have, yeah, I'm too young for that and you're too young um and you, as you say, are using your social media profile to raise awareness and what people have been saying. You because the reason I brought up the social media thing is because of course it can be a force for

good

, as we know, it can also be a not so much force for good, and Amy Hart, who was also in

love

with Love Island, it's not yours. villa, but she said she should do more.
There's an article about her in the paper today. She should do more to stop online trolling. And I know Love Island contestants get attacked for trolling, right? Yes, yes, we are talking. You feel like, yeah, I've been very lucky that I haven't experienced a lot of trolling. I've been very lucky to date the villa, but unfortunately there are still people like that, even with my cancer, I've still received nasty comments. and things like that I really know how to say oh she's lying she's this she's that and I just woke up and I saw my whole Instagram I thought that's ridiculous but yeah, unfortunately people there are people out there people say you're lying I know about your cancer.
How do you respond to that? It may not respond to anything. I never respond to trolling on social media. It's not worth my time and I'm very strong about it anyway. I've always been like that, but it makes me sad. so I'm not lying about this or doing anything about it, it's really serious and I don't want to go through this so well at all and like we say, you're using social media for good, do you have people? in contact with you since I have had the most support I have ever had. I received more messages when I had the operation than when I left the villa and a lot of young girls have been messaging me saying Appointments booked or looking for dates because of me too so I feel out of it all if I could save one's life person or getting girls or anyone checked for lumps, no matter their age, that's just amazing.
For me and Dr. Hillary um, Demi's appointment was rescheduled I think six or seven times, what if you're in that position where you would be extremely concerned about a lump? What kind of options do you have as a patient? You have to be assertive and be strong, you have to be persistent and the GP is on your side if the GP thinks this is something worrying and the hospital for canceled appointments the GP can act on your behalf and push for let that appointment be made as a matter of priority so GP is worth its weight in gold in that case, um, but be persistent, write down your worries and concerns, make that appointment with your GP first and then go from there, yeah , and take a lesson from a leaf in your book, demi, because You were strong, yes, and you were persistent, yes, assertive and thank God, it was

love

ly to see you.
Thank you very much, thank you very much.
