los angeles dodgers julio ur as arrested for felony domestic violence on sunday
I always call him Julia, but I don't want to sound like he is. on a first name basis with them today, so that guy was

arrested

for domestic violence, I think at an FCC football game, and his time with the Dodgers is probably over in the domestic violence case, the effect on the Dodgers is not that big. the most important thing about it, but it's the part we're trained to talk about, so let's start by saying that if you need help with domestic violence, you can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233 or direct line. .org and please understand that as we talk about the ramifications of all of this on baseball, we understand that this is much bigger than baseball and our disappointment in all of this and the frustration and anger is much bigger than baseball, but Like I said, the baseball side is the part we're qualified to talk about and that's what we're going to do, but I know there's an underlying, uh, oh, we get how serious this is, it sucks, right, Vince, Yeah, I mean, isn't that what you ever did?
los angeles dodgers julio ur as arrested for felony domestic violence on sunday
I want to see overall, uh, it's definitely not what you want to see for the Dodgers and just put a uh, you know, weird mood, the rest, I mean, you're in a weird mood the rest of the day, you know, Obviously we don't. You know, you know, I've talked to you a couple of times, but we don't know him personally. What's more, you know someone. As we watch him, we've known who he was for about 12 years, since he was 16. when Dodge first hired him, he's 18 now and you know we already went through this in 2019 when he was arrested for misdemeanor domestic violence and you know that that situation was he got suspended you know we already went through this whole process and it was awkward at the time and you know I mean awkward in the sense that like us you know you have to talk about it and you know all that kind of of things and, like you said, there are obviously bigger problems in baseball.
Part of it is you know we get it and you know we're here to talk about our side which is the baseball side uh but yeah I mean obviously it's not a good thing to be a part of and you know. You don't feel good about it, you know it's not the Dodgers' fault, but you don't feel good about the whole situation. Fabian Ardiah and some people from the A's, so this was official. They had the official arrested. on suspicion of

felony

bodily injury to his spouse, he was arrested at 11:09 p.m. PST by Exposition Park Police and booked around 1 a.m. m.
Monday morning by La in the LAPD jail, released with fifty thousand dollars. Pawn later that morning Monday morning and uh, he has been informed that his next court date is September 27th. MLB is already investigating this situation. The Dodgers issue a statement. We mentioned that we were aware of an incident involving Julio Díaz while we try to learn all the facts that he will not travel with. the team the organization has no further comment at this time uh Scott Boris who is Julio's agent did not return a call from atlético uh for a comment say all that is that you know the general things and yes, obviously you know what we have already been through this before, not just with Julia but with Bauer, and you know at least this time people understand that the Dodger guy just can't completely release him, that due process has to happen and that's what we're going to go through . now, but even you know the best case scenario for everyone involved, you would probably still see Julio have thrown his last pitch for the Dodgers just because any investigation will take at least a month and that's all that's left in the regular season, yeah and uh.
It's just that even though we all understand it a little better now, that didn't stop Bill Plaschke from writing his great article saying that the Dodgers can't let Julio pitch for them again, it's not up to them and, you know, I know not everyone saw when Technically it was after the season, it would be up to them, yes, exactly, but right now the Dodgers can't do anything, but the thing is, Major League Baseball is not going to allow Julio to pitch as scheduled on Thursday, I think . that's not going to happen, it will be, I mean, he didn't even travel with the team, but very, very soon he will be placed on administrative leave.
It makes sense, just like with the Bower situation, it makes sense for them to postpone it. as long as possible just because the initial administrative leave is 10 days and then they have to get extensions and all that, so it doesn't make sense for them to put him on administrative leave on Tuesday, which was, or Monday, which is a Day free anyway, you know, and they might not even make it until Thursday, when he was technically afraid to pitch, but either way he's not pitching this week and that has nothing to do with what any journalist wrote demanding that he I won't release this.
Last week, that's how it works and it's going to be interesting to see because you know, when we went through this with Bauer, I laid out all the rules that are basically the League and the League's domestic violence policy. the players union agreed together says I guess you can read a little bit says that the initial authority to discipline players for events that include violations of this policy shall rest with the Commissioner's Office the commissioner's office will retain the authority to discipline players and under this policy until you notify the Players Association and the player that you are transferring such authority to the club.
If the Commissioner's Office does not transfer its authority, no club may take any disciplinary or adverse action against the player arising from a covered incident involving a covered player. act, what that means is that teams are not allowed to discipline players for domestic violence, that falls solely on the league. Now it's a bit of a gray area what constitutes discipline because, with Trevor Bauer, I don't think it was that grey. Because he was the Young Award winner at the time he was owed a lot of money over the next two years, there was no legitimate reason in baseball to cut a guy, it clearly would have been punishment for the domestic violence charge. um, or the sexual assault charge in his case, um, when things became clear and the Dodgers released him, he hadn't pitched in the big leagues in over a year, so there were reasonable reasons for baseball, I think than to get their way, but when Starling Castro in 2021 was accused of domestic violence, the Nationals were able to just cut him and I don't know if the difference was the time and money left on the contract because it was near the end of the season and you know that he was only under contract that year and not by much, I don't know if it was just that he wasn't a good player anymore and you know, I don't really know where that gray area is, um and maybe it was just because the union decided not to fight against that, um, but you know, there may be an option here for the Dodgers to simply release Julio, um, from the contract.
There's actually less time left than Castro had left, but you know we're probably going to see. He'll be on administrative leave or suspension for the rest of the season and then the Dodgers won't waive him and maybe no one else will either, depending on what the investigation turns up, yeah, so you know, that's kind of like The Bare Bones. Nuts and bolts of what's going on with Julio, we'll come back in a minute, talk about what this means for the Dodgers the rest of this season and the postseason and then later what it means for them, uh, in the future, since it means they probably won't waive him, so that's, yeah, that's what we'll get to, so please keep it close with the Dodgers.

We want to thank you again for making Locked on Dodgers your first lesson every weekday morning. uh we want to especially thank our everyday users, those of you who are with us every weekday morning. We love talking about the Dodgers with you. We appreciate them. If you're watching this on YouTube, we'd love to hear your thoughts in the YouTube comments section. to keep it, you know civil, I know we're all frustrated and upset about this situation, but you know, let's not take it out on each other, and remember the Dodgers start a series with the Marlins today in Miami, the game begins. while you're probably still at work, so if you can't watch on TV, you could listen on the radio to the Dodgers radio broadcast on Sirius XM or the S6 sxm app and, yeah, we'd love to hear from you. after we're done giving you our opinion, so Vince again, it feels a little gross to talk about the ramifications of this on baseball, so maybe we'll acknowledge it at the beginning of each segment, but you know from a baseball standpoint , July.
He was kind of a big question mark the rest of the year anyway because he struggled so much that he had a lot of trouble against the Braves the other day, but you know, he couldn't get the starts out in his head, a lot of Clunkers in his season this one. The year hasn't come close to matching what he did the last two years when he was a Cy Young contender and uh, he was going to be one. I mean, the next few weeks were going to really determine what his role was going to be. In the postseason, you know, Julio has been the number one postseason starter the last two years, but this year that wasn't the case and I think you know that, especially if they get to the NLCS against the Braves.
We talked the other day about how. It might have made sense for him to not even be one of the top starters and, you know, maybe they go with the young guys and the fire pitchers, this obviously forces the Dodgers because I think we can safely assume that Julio won't pitch in postseason for the Dodgers and, well, it could end up being a blessing in disguise from a baseball standpoint. There really are no easy answers as to who occupies that spot. Yeah, I mean, there are a lot of answers. Maybe there isn't, likeYou said, it's not easy.
Answer and you know in general, you know I've seen obviously different opinions and thoughts and takes, and you know, talk to some people today and you know, in the grand scheme of things as they currently are, it didn't really change the Dodgers. The odds, you know, obviously, may be a little bit lower than they were. You know, it's a little harder now, but from what we've seen from Julio this year, it doesn't really change too much because you didn't know what you were going to get out of him, you don't know if you would get seven innings, two runs allowed or if you would get four innings and six runs, it's like you don't really know it because of that. perspective and you know some of it doesn't change much um.
I think, like you said, a blessing in disguise in the sense that some of these younger arms might get the opportunity now and you know Julio was once one of those guys. I had an opportunity and I took advantage of it and unfortunately now is not that time for him, but you know there are other guys that are here that we were talking about the other day. how there were going to be some tough decisions that had to be made, uh, just based on, you know, how many guys could come back, how many guys are already healthy, how many guys they already have and all that kind of stuff, and you know, I saw people. saying oh, now they need walkability to get back.
I don't know, like I said, if the only thing that happens today is that Julio is not on the playoff roster, then that's not the case, the Dodgers are not in any panic. I do not do it. I think there's a big change besides who pitches the game one or two after or before Kershaw. I think that's the only big difference and obviously we're going to have to figure it out and for the last month that's something that you guys are going to do. Maybe this opens up more situations like that, or you know, dual boot, you know Yarborough and someone else, or Pepe someone else, you know it could open up something like that and you know it could end up being a more efficient and better use of it.
Dodgers roster that way, you know, for the rest of the regular season they can get by with a group of starters, you know, plug in anyone, she in pepio, uh, you know, Michael Grossful is back next weekend week and probably won't. Be excited to be a starter, but they have enough arms to cover the innings the rest of this regular season and when October rolls around, you know it could just be a matter of them simply seeing and seeing each other a lot more than they would have. before, yeah, Ryan pepeo, uh, they can't be called up yet, uh, you know, like someone goes on the disabled list, I checked and there's no suspension, uh, exception, he just has to be inactive for 15 days unless is replacing the injured player or uh. the 27th man during a doubleheader or in this case the 29th man since the rosters have expanded to 28, but yeah, even without Julio, you look at what the Dodgers have in terms of starting pitching options or mass pitching options in the post you have Kershaw and Bobby Miller Lance Lynn Ryan Pio Emmett Sheehan uh maybe Walker Bueller Ryan Yarbrough uh and maybe Michael Grove if he gets stronger and maybe Gavin Stone you know he's pitched really well so that's nine guys there, we won't have all nine together on a later roster, but we could definitely see them carrying six of those guys and knowing that they only plan to use three of them as starters or, perhaps, carrying seven and knowing that Kershaw is a true starter and everyone else says "hello, give us." whatever you can and then we'll piggyback because you can only stand to have six relievers if you get seven, eight, nine innings of your piggyback situation every game, you know that would definitely be a new approach for the postseason, but uh. you know, with the guys that have and uh, there are question marks around all these guys, you know, just like there was going to be around Julio Lance Lynn has big question marks, uh, you know most of the other guys besides from Lancelin, they're question marks, you know. young people experience resistance to that kind of thing, eh, but you know there are question marks anyway and so taking that kind of approach might give you a little bit of security, okay, we only have three Emmett Sheehan entries In this game, don't worry, we can get it.
Four innings from Ryan Yarbrough and we're not going to blow up the bullpen, you know, that kind of thing, um, I don't know, but I'm kind of relieved that they don't have to make a decision on how. Using Julio because there's a history not just with the Dodgers but with every major league team, you know, giving up the veteran, you know, no, it's not enough of the attitude of what you've done for me lately when it comes to the postseason. and really the post should largely be something you've done for me lately. No, not as far as you know.
I don't believe in the top end, but you know how good you are right now. That should be it. the calculus when you're determining who pitches for you in the postseason and I was worried that they were going to have it right. Julio closed out the 2020 World Series for us, he's been with us forever, we don't want to hurt his feelings, you know? in case we wanted to give it up, all those things were going to come into the decision, not now, that has to come into the decision and they can do more about how good are you now, what does the body give us of launchers? the best chance to win the World Series and, well, that seems obvious, most teams generally aren't in a position to take that approach with their postseason pitching staff, and the Dodgers are maybe a little more capable now to do it, yeah and and it's a little bit, I mean, a slight change from what we've seen from other teams recently, where they just don't get off to a good start as the starters only go three and four innings because they're not that good. and you just want to take them once through a lineup and then go to your bullpen because you have a lot of bullpen arms that have, you know, sometimes a couple of days off every other day or something like that and you know it's a lot more there. easy to do.
I've watched teams, so I always find it funny when people say, oh, you know, the dogs don't have the opening pitch to win or two, like the rotation of teams other than the Nationals and those were two guys that you know they took them, but you know, or the rotation never really stands out, at least not recently, of all these teams, it's usually a guy that goes up, the bullpen goes up, you know, the offense has clutch hits, it's always like that, you don't know , not even when, like when the Giants. they were winning, you know one year they had old Jake Peavey, he was going like three innings a start, basically, you know, but they still won, it's possible, yeah, off the top of my head, the last World Series champion in which I can think of and who I trusted.
The starting pitcher to do it was on the 2005 White Sox and uh, 2005 was a long time ago, like Vince was still in diapers, he was in diapers until he was 14, just so you know, and I barely had any gray hair at that time. moment. That was a long time ago, yeah, so you know from a baseball standpoint. I don't think this will hurt the Dodgers that much this year, and if we move forward, we'll come back in a minute and talk about what happened. it means to them in the future and unfortunately it might be a blessing for this guy to be there too, so thank you for making Locked on Dodgers your first lesson and please keep it locked on Dodgers.
Hello, we're back, we want to thank you again for making Locked On. We're not going to check your podcast history so I'll believe you and again we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments section on YouTube or on social media if you're not watching on YouTube and again we're just asking. to keep those comments civil and recognize that all of us as Dodger fans are not the ones who didn't cause this problem, um and uh, so let's be kind to each other about this and one more reminder that we're talking about implications of this for baseball, but we recognize that domestic violence is something very serious that is much bigger than baseball and unfortunately we have to do it, we are regular people, we have to talk about the implications of this for the Dodgers, but you will notice if you Lo we are watching on YouTube.
We've had the National Domestic Violence Hotline scrolling at the bottom between this entire episode. There is help available if you need it and their websites there, phone numbers, get help if you need it. and be strong, so let's get back to the baseball implications, this Julio will be a free agent at the end of the season that he was entering this year. He was expected to be basically the biggest non-Otani name on the free agent market. and then Julio's struggles tempered that a little bit, but I think he was still going to be a very big name on the free agent market and there were a lot of doubts about whether the Dodgers would waive him and, you know, there have been people wanting him. extend, which was never really rustic, just because Scott Boris is his agent, not because Boris makes the decisions, but because the players who are interested in signing discount extensions from HomeTown do not hire Scott Boris as their agent, for Which Anyway, it was probably unlikely that the Dodgers were going to waive him and now I would say the chances are about zero and the chances of any team signing him, you know it depends a lot on what this investigation shows, but you know which is worth noting. uh,

felony

domestic violence is what you were charged with and they don't just throw these charges around anyway, felony domestic violence uh means that one person has caused serious physical injury or harm to another, to any other resident. from the same household and So it's the degree of harm caused, uh, and the fact that it was a felony domestic violence, remember as Vince mentioned before when he was arrested four years ago, that was a misdemeanor and that was that charge, You know what he was accused of. was pushing her then-girlfriend, uh, in a parking lot, you know, what they both said happened was he grabbed her wrist and she slipped and fell, um, but with a real reason why. they arrested was. pushing her down and that was a misdemeanor, so what we're talking about here is that they're accusing him of something much more serious than pushing her down in a parking lot and that's already serious, so you know what this investigation of MLB.
The Los Angeles Police Department's investigation and investigation, whatever it turns out, will have a major impact on his future in baseball. It's not at all far-fetched to think that his time in baseball might be over and that he might have no suitors. on the free agent market, uh, this next season, uh, but I would say that the events, in my opinion, at least I would say that there is a good chance that the Dodgers will try to resign him, yeah, it's one of those where you know you fool me once, shame on you. I know you or whatever, actually I guess it wouldn't be like that, but either way, you knew the Dodgers kept him around after the first one after taking a bit of a strong stance on these types of accusations before you know that would he or all the Chapmans didn't go after him after they found out what happened to him and you know that incident they let him know what it was, either because it was just a situation or you know the fact that there was There was no video, You know, those kinds of things maybe factor in, you know, or the fact that they had him for so long and yeah, whatever it was, he got his second chance, the Dodgers, you know, maybe they couldn't have let him go. right after, at that same moment, I don't know what the CBA was back then, but you know they could have done it, they could have gotten rid of it if they wanted to and they didn't, but now it's happened twice.
You don't know, I guess arrested, you know, charged, there's a lot of different legal terms here that are people that some people will try to use, you know, in essence, you're proven guilty and all that kind of stuff, but like you said, I don't. you do. They charge you for this just because you know rumors or anything else like you there for felony and I for those specific words they use in athletics was a bodily injury to a spouse, that means you have to have some type of visible injury, laceration , bruises. I know something like, um, if I'm not mistaken, there's something visual that's on it that you can see, that got him arrested for that, so yeah, I don't see it being the moment with the Dodgers, you know, so realistic. uh in terms of being in the MLB or in the MLB, you know they're guys that have survived after one chance, but there hasn't been anyone that's had this problem twice and if he's done it, I don't think.he would still be in the league or in Archstone if there was yeah yeah none that I can think of and uh I think the Dodgers did the right thing in 2019 by supporting him and helping him you know I think their goal was to help him. mature, yes, you know he and his girlfriend had the same story about what happened, the legal authorities agree with that assessment and the Dodgers, you know, helped him try to mature and learn from it and become a better person and, you know?
What he is currently accused of is true, so maybe it was a failure, but that doesn't mean it was wrong for them to try, and yes, from a legal point of view, no, he hasn't been convicted of anything, maybe not even has even done it. been officially charged being arrested being accused or accused of different things anywhere yeah, so he's been arrested um, but you know, it's still up to the district attorney I guess charging him, but you know, being arrested for a felony, uh domestic violence it's a big big deal and you know we may or may not ever find out all the details of what happened but those details are going to be very important to teams that are considering signing him and like you said the fact that which happened twice, even if they don't cash him out I think the teams will walk away.
You have to be really cautious about trying to chase him and pay him a lot of money, so, you know, from a human point of view, it sucks that he can ruin his life in one day, but it's much more horrible for the person he abused and it sucks, you know, the abuser is not the victim in this situation or any situation, and we as fans are not the victims either, you know, we talk about how much it sucks for us as Dodgers and baseball fans. You know none of us are the victim and it sucks more for the victim and we recognize that and you know it's a horrible situation all around.
I feel like I've said everything I want to say about the events. Do you have anything else we need to say about this no I don't have anything else right now okay I need to go take a shower or something we want to thank all of you for being here for this so I know this project will probably not be the best. A nice episode to listen to, we hope we treated you with the respect you deserve and again, you know, seek help if you are, if you are a victim or know a victim of domestic violence, the resources are there: 800 799, safe or the direct line. .org and everything else thanks for being here every day remember to listen to the Dodger radio broadcast on Sirius I'm on Twitter at snydog DMS are open for both on Twitter.
