What do I have for you today? Today I'm bringing you a DIY using one of my favorite new finds that I recently found at the Dollar Tree and they are these

wood

planks

from Crafter Square. They come in a pack of six. This is an amazing find. This is something I've seen at Walmart in their craft

wood

section for years and I mean Walmart sells these for about 296 for a six pack they are the exact same size because I had a couple left over from Walmart so when I got them I saw at Dollar Tree was a must because there are endless DIY possibilities using these DIYs today.

I'm making a 4 piece for Lee's new room, which used to be an old raised room, since we're still hunkered down at home. I'm taking the opportunity to make some decor pieces for her room, so I'm excited to bring them in today. You are a DIY using these, this is a very economical DIY, so let's not waste any more time, let's get into it. Let me show you

what

I have in mind for today's DIY using these wooden

planks

that you can get from the Dollar Tree below. in a six pack so before we get started I wanted to show you that you can buy these at Walmart and these are for creating you're going to pay a couple of

dollar

s more for them.

I'm going to take these slides and I'm going to shift them a little bit when I place them and you can see how I'm doing it, how upset you want them is really up to you. I started out using just six, which was a pack later I ended up making more, but we'll get to that when it comes to using some of these giant thicker popsicle sticks. This is

what

I'll use to hold these specks together. If you place them strategically, you can have them cover each of the slats. The glue I will be using today is Aleene's Tacky Glue which you can get at Dollar Tree.

This is the glue in the gold bottle. I don't suggest using the clear gel glue when dealing with wood. I haven't seen it very well. results with that glue, but I have seen great results using the aleene glue in this gold bottle. Dollar Tree also has a wood glue that works amazing too, but since this is what I have on hand, this is what I'm going to use. just your preference once I have these popsicle sticks in place before it dries, I'm going to put some magazines or books right on top just to add some weight, add a little pressure just so they really stay on well their place so you can I can see here that I added the two extra slabs and I ended up adding them on top and just used some of the pieces of my giant popsicle sticks that I had in my trash can and made some use of them.
I'm happy with eight slats in total, it's the length I needed now using some Waverly chalk paint and the color white. If you want to use an Apple Barrel mat you can use any color you want because this is your DIY you will be creative and make it your own. I'm just going to put on a base coat of white paint because we're going to add a second coat later and we're going to add a second coat right now. It's not necessary because we'll take care of any parts that you can see through sorely after this first layer dries.
I know that probably sounds really confusing, but trust me, you'll see when we get to it, okay, so my base coat is nice and dry and like I said, it's okay if you can see through it because we're going to remedy that here in a second using some tropical apple barrel antlers in some Waverly teal, you don't need much of this I put in. these plates were too much, a little bit will go a long way because we're going to use a watercolor technique and to do that, this is where I apply the second coat of my white paint or whatever your base paint is because we need the base coat was wet now I wanted to achieve, like I said, a water color

look

, kind of a creamy, cloudy

look

and to do that, this is a technique that I like to use, so once I have that base coat of the white again before it dries I'm going to put just a little bit of my color on a new brush and you can see how I'm brushing it lightly you want that feathered look you want that light look we're not going to go for full coverage here and when you apply it because the base coat is wet, it will blend and give you it's going to give a really nice look and you can get a really uniform look in this painting if you just make longer strokes from side to side and so I can see that's how I'm doing it and you're going to get a really good result so for this first series I did the bottom ribbon, I'm going to skip a ribbon in the center and use the teal.
I'm going to continue. to the third ribbon and do the same by applying the white coat first and then adding the teal to get that soft aqua brushed look. Once I've done the teal, I'm going to skip another ribbon in the middle and continue with the orange and I'm going to repeat this process one more time with each of the colors when you're applying your color paint, if you have areas that you didn't want , don't try to fix them while it's wet, just let your piece dry completely and once it's completely dry, simply reapply your white paint and you can cover it with one or two light coats over those areas.
Oh my gosh, I love these colors, they are so bright and vibrant. and fun, this will look so cute in Ellie's room. Now we're going to embellish this and to embellish it I'm going to use some of these stencils that I bought at Walmart. These are from Waverly. These are templates that I use often. I'm going to spell the word love as you can see and for the letter O I'm going to use this foil flower that I also had in my stash and this is one that I bought at Walmart and once I have my stencils, I'm going to place them.
First I'm going to go ahead and hot glue this piece together, that way I'm actually going to maintain the spacing of every other letter I place when placing the stencils. The best thing I can do to keep them in place is to simply use painter's tape. You can take the painter's tape off and on and it won't peel off the paint underneath, so it's an

easy

way to keep your stencils in place besides pressing them down and applying a little pressure while you apply them. the paint that I'm using here, the color that I'm using today is Waverly elephant and I'm using a sponge to apply it.
I found that when you work with stencils you don't want to use a brush because you will bleed more using a sponge really is the best way to do it and you don't want to put too much paint on your sponge because again you will bleed. I'm going to bleed anyway, but I'll show you how to fix it now. I know what you're thinking about what looks like a one at the top, but it really isn't. I promise I'll fix it later, you'll see, because I'm done. If you don't like fixing the bleed, you'll want to wait again until the paint dries and you also don't want to remove the stencil until the paint dries.
Once the paint is dry, you can go ahead and remove the stencil and I'll see that I have some slight bleating, but this is an

easy

fix so don't worry. I know it can be a frustrating part of working with stencils, but there is a trick to the trade when it comes to crafts. and working with templates makes it a little less frustrating, so you can see that these templates have these spaces and the letters and that's not something I really like, so I like to go in and fill them in and do my letters. all to fix that bleed äj-- if you just take your gray paint or whatever color paint you used on your letters and just go over your letters along that side edge and just straighten them out, you're I guess making your letters a little bit wider even though you're not quite wide, I guess, and you can see how easily you can clean up some of those bleeding spots that are along the edges and it really doesn't take much. time it just takes a little bit of a steady hand and a nice little thin brush so I honestly loved this but I couldn't get over the fact that it looked a1 and I'm telling you we all thought that but it really wasn't. with the templates, each letter came with an uppercase and a lowercase and this was the lowercase that came with the L, which is super frustrating because it looks like one, this was definitely something I couldn't live with, so I decided to escape. my sandpaper goes ahead and sands the gray letters.
I knew I was going to have to redo these top three slats anyway, but it's no big deal, this is part of DIY, these things happen, this is reality, sometimes this is what I do. when I'm the wine to all of you and I don't always show it, but I want you to know that it happens and that it's okay to fix your problem and undo what you did, we do it just a little bit and so using a little sandpaper is a solution easy, you can see here, after I sanded it, I went through the three coats of paint, you just want to clean all that off, I guess, dust and everything, and you can see I'm just going to have to repaint just a little bit of this, But I'm not going to repaint everything.
I'm just going to make a mosaic. I went ahead and covered it with white first and then went back with the teal and orange on top and lo and behold the ribbon is a little darker but it's still wet in all honesty and this was the result. I think the uppercase L, although a little larger, looks much better than the lowercase a1 that looked like and now I am happy with this sign to hang this sign. I'm just going to use my usual method of using some twine if you just tie the ends of the twine together and make it two or three, I guess, thick strands and then hot glue. put it on the back and you really want to be generous with the glue, just put it there and let it dry.
It's an easy, inexpensive, and inexpensive way to add a hanger to one of your DIY signs that you're making using items you have in your pile. I'm very happy with the way this turned out. What a fun and easy DIY decorative wall plaque using these new ribbons that you can get at Dollar Tree by Crafter Square and if you can't find it at Dollar Tree. you can find it at Walmart in the crafts section. I think this is one of those signs that can be made to fit any decor and I love that I was able to make this for Alley while staying home even though her room transformation is a bit on pause for the moment.
I was still able to make her some really fun pieces to add to her room when it's time to start again. I think it was a really fun DIY and yes, there were a few bumps in the road, but they were the ones I worked through and now you know what wine really is. I like to show you what I go through when I create them because it's not always perfect. It doesn't always turn out the way I imagined, but I just stick with it, work with it, redo what I need to redo, and in this case I'm happy with the end result.
I think it looks much better with the L larger and with a capital letter. L than the lower case that looked like a 1. I'm glad I fixed it because I tried to leave it and Ally asked me why there is a 1 in there. Yes, because I used the lowercase L and that was the real one, it wasn't a 1. I don't. Do not know anyone. I hope you all enjoyed today's DIY using the new Crafter Square wood slats that you can find at Dollar Tree.
