Start

this

series with, we're going to be crafting on a budget, so today we're going to do a little DIY using some of the dollar tree spelled rolls. I'm not going to lie to you, this belt is a little thinner. side, but we're going to make it work and we'll do it by folding the felt in half. Now you can see that this top edge from here to the bottom is 13 inches. Don't cut off the excess felt on the top you want to leave that because we're going to need it, we're going to go ahead and take some hot glue and hot glue on the sides to join those two pieces together and this right here is just going to make our felt a little thicker and it will give it a little more sturdiness is sturdiness, a word that we're going to make it a little sturdier, here we go, there's proper English.
Now taking this top edge, we're going to fold it in half, that's what that extra fabric was for, but when you fold it in half, you want to fold it in a way that covers that 13 inch top edge that we left and then you're going to want to close those sides and while you're at it, go ahead and close. to that bottom edge and gluing it to the top edge of the bottom of the felt. Wow, that was a little confusing, but you see what I'm doing now, because we're making a banner that we need to make like some kind of pocket. for our wire hanger, then we're going to fold that top edge in half again and we're just going to close this bottom edge.
You don't want to close the side edges because we want to leave them open. that little piece of wire has a little sliding place to hold our banner. Let's add a little bit of red to this and so use my ruler and yes, the rotary cutter from Dollar Tree. I love this thing. I'm going. go ahead and cut a piece that measures 11 and a half inches by ten and three quarter inches and I'm going to go ahead and place this on the top of the right side, not on the sides that we folded and glued everything, but on the front of our banner like this, giving us a little bit of that outline of the white and again taking my hot glue because this is a no-sew project, but if you want to sew this, you can do that too.
I'm going to hot glue this piece on, so I have to be honest, this is one of those times where what I thought I wanted to do with the top I ended up not wanting to do. I was originally going to add some burlap to the top, but then I decided to go in a different direction, so I'm going to go ahead and fold this and hot glue it on, perfectly framing that red felt on the front on all four sides with the white felt and honestly I think I like to add this. piece at the bottom anyway because it will add a little more weight to this banner which will keep it straighter when hung outside for this DIY.
I'll also be incorporating these new wood planks from Crafter Square that my dollar tree just received. and I even received a couple in my subscriber email. These measure four and a half inches by four and a half inches. I'm going to give them a good coat of Waverly white chalk paint. I also received that email from my subscriber. rock the things I couldn't find in my dollar tree or couldn't go out to get them. A lot of you thought of me and sent me things, so I have a lot of really cool articles that were sent to Me in my subscriber email that you'll see in some upcoming DIYs like this, so like I said, I'm going to go ahead and give you a coat of this paint on all four.
What is an alternative to these tables? There aren't many. of wood that you can buy that is this size, but you can always take plates from a dollar tree and they are very easy to cut with a utility knife and cut a four by four square, not four and a half by four and a half inches , or you can use another piece of felt. You can cut felt squares that are white if you want, so there are a couple of alternatives for those of you who don't get these planks on your dollar tree yet because the dollar tree is expanding its craft. square for all stores, so you just have to be patient, it will arrive at yours.
I'm pretty sure about it once they're dry and I put a couple coats on them. I'm going to place them evenly spaced in front of this and you can see where I'm going with this once I have them in place, I'm just going to use a little bit of hot glue and I'm going to be generous with that hot glue to adhere these planks and oh I assure you I just spilled some hot glue on that board and I haven't seen it yet, but I think I see it right now and I'm going to take this board off because yeah, cleaning it just stained it.
I'm going to try to scratch it off because it's going to bother me if I don't and you can see there's a little bit of stain there, but it gets better, I promise, so I'm going to continue gluing my boards. Before I scrape that stain off, now I'm going to grab some black apple barrel paint and this is a gloss. Wow, I don't know why I had glitter in my stash because I really don't like glitter. I'm a total matte person, but I pulled it off for a reason using a very fine brush. I'm going to put some stitch marks on these white boards I made now in all honesty, I'm not sure why I'm doing it with paint. because I feel like normally I would have gotten out my black marker and done it and it would have been a lot faster but what I'm thinking is I already had this because I was in DIY mode when I filmed my creations or DIY I do batches so normally I'll film from sunrise to sunset for a couple of days and I'll probably do five to ten DIYs in a couple of days, so I think when everything is done and I'm in that mode, I don't want to get up and go

look

for something, and I'll probably that's why I use paint, but if you have a marker, I would definitely get it out because you'll be done in less time. over five minutes instead of taking 20 like it took me to use the paint but this is an alternative if you don't have the marker you will use your brush and some black paint look how cool it looks the seams really just add There is Lots of character in a DIY that really finishes off those planks.
I think before I sewed them the planks looked unfinished but now they have that nice edge sewn on and it's really finishing them off and then I felt like I needed to add more stitching to the felt to tie it all together so I'm going to go around the red felt and add some stitching black. Now I'm going to tell you that a marker won't work for this part, so you're going to need to use paint, so I'm going to rewind and take back what I said and maybe you can use the black marker for the white part, but you'll have to get the black paint out of anyway so you better take the 20 minutes and do it with the black paint im going to change things up a little bit and this is a black cardstock this is a real base grade cardstock and using my cricut i went ahead and cut out the letters l heart v e for this diy now there are a couple different ways you can make these letters you don't need a cricut one way is you can go to google image search and you can search for capital letters like I did for the capital letter l and when you find one in a font that you like Can you trace it on your screen by just placing a piece of copy paper on your screen and tracing it very lightly with a pencil printing it out if you want and tracing it that way or you can get this set on etsy from linda?
You can get the digital die cut for 50 cents or you can get the dies for two dollars with free shipping. You can find the link to Linda's etsy shop in the description box below. It really is your choice. There are different. There were ways to do this, but I felt that because the boards are four and a half by four and a half inches, they needed a slightly larger letter than Dollar Tree has available on their sticky signs or wooden letters, etc. Taking some spray adhesive, I'm using this one from Scotch Dollar Tree. It has a new spray adhesive that looks a little better than the last one they used to carry.
I'm going to go ahead and spray this on the back of my letters now when you're spraying this you want to make sure your letters are facing down on the back and I thought this would be a fun topic or a way to put love on this poster with these blocks. I have seen this. Write out the theme before and I thought it would be really cute and would work perfectly for this banner now because I used cardstock for this. I want to seal this, if you're using a vinyl you don't really have to seal it. but if it's going to be outside, I'd seal it anyway.
I'm using a mod podge to seal it. If you want to use Waverly varnish, you can. It's a little more expensive for me. The mod podge works just as well. I'm going to want to make sure your letters are nice and adhered and just brushing on the mod podge you shouldn't have any problems with your letters bubbling or wrinkling because we used the spray adhesive now I'm going to set this aside. let it dry for a couple of hours and our sign is ready and there is the sign on the Dollar Tree sign stand, what I call the sign stand.
I think this is a fun handmade sign for Valentine's Day. Now let's move on to St. Patrick's Day. one because St. Patrick's Day is the next holiday and we have to have a banner for that and yes I said St. Patrick's Day and I have an Easter truck license plate in my hand let's do this and I'll start by removing the decoration with one of the dollar tree paint scrapers and how often does that happen when you remove it and there is no damage to the board. I love that I'm also going to use this fat quarter, this green and black fat quarter that I can reach the dollar tree and you guessed it.
I'm going to take some mod podge and just pour it on my plate because I feel like it's going to go faster. Don't know. I think I was being impatient. IM not going to do it. lie, I'm impatient when I see something or have a vision of what I want a DIY to be. I almost can't wait for it to finish because I want to see the result, so we're definitely going to give this a good try. covering a mod podge, then we're going to go ahead and put a piece of green and black fabric, you guessed it, on top of this and we'll give it a second coat of mod podge to seal that fabric in there and make it nice and stiff now, the fabric and The mod podge takes a couple of hours to dry.
Personally, I like to place mine in my oven on my artisan cookie sheet at the lowest temperature my oven can reach, which is 135 degrees and it's actually a little bit hotter than the hottest day of the summer here, our summers. They get to be around 110 degrees, so I feel like putting it in the oven at 135 degrees is safe and takes about 20 minutes to dry, incompared to a couple of hours once. it's nice and dry, I'm going to take my exact knife or my razor and use the plate as a guide and I'm just going to cut off the excess fabric, I needed some gray paint and guess what I don't have on hand so I'm going to do some with paint white acrylic.
This is apple barrel paint and I'm going to use my Helpful Black Gloss Paint. Look, this is useful for something. Hopefully the glitter doesn't shine because I'm using a matte white, so maybe I'll cancel it. I don't know, I'm going to add just a touch. from black to this to get the grade I'm happy with. I don't want to get too dark. I want to clarify because I am going to use this for the mirrors and window of my truck. Now I'll tell you. So before I started making this plate, I took a photo of the original plate so I would have something to reference once I covered it with fabric, just to get some of those minor details that are on the plate and incorporate them into the plate.
And then using the gray paint, I'm going to use it like I said for the windows. I feel like if you used white it would be too stark and stand out, and since I have a dark fabric background, I feel like a light gray is perfect for that. Now when I do this, I do it freehand and look at the image on my phone while I do it. I said it once and I'll say it again. I don't have one, I guess. The gift of painting as easily as Kayla does, painting freehand is something that has always intimidated me a lot, it is not as easy for me as it is for her, but I am not going to let that stop me because I do not seek perfection when something It's rustic it's not perfect and that's something you have to keep in mind, so I challenge you to challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone and try new things because you really don't know how well. you're going to do with them until you actually do it and I feel like the more I paint freehand the better I get at it and that's why I say if I can do it you can do it so challenge yourself and yeah so I'm going to do it .
Go ahead and paint this window. I'm also going to add the side mirrors. When I paint, I like to think about things in a way that's less intimidating and what I mean by that is here I'm doing this side mirror. and it's backwards, so when you think of it as backwards, it takes the pressure off because who can't do backwards, we all can, so when you think about things in that aspect and you try to relate it. to something else, it really takes a lot of pressure off the fenders and tires. I wanted to add more texture to this besides the fabric so I thought the puffy black paint would be perfect for this and because I had this. in my stash I'm going to go ahead and use this, if you don't have puffy paint in your stash you can always pick up some dollar tree caulk and mix it with your black paint and just like that for a dollar fifty you have some puffy paint , a cool trick, huh?
I love that it's so inexpensive. I'm telling you, when I run out of puffy paint, that's the method I'm going to use and I might even keep my bottles to add. I'm telling you this because applying puffy paint on these bottles is very easy, but I'm not sure if the caulk will make it too thick, we'll see, and with the white puffy paint I'm going to go in and add just a couple highlights to the bumper alone. to give it some dimension and add a little bit of detail and I can't forget the bumper so I'm going to use my gray paint and add a bumper as well and later you'll see. that I added some sort of bumper on the tailgate, I guess if you want, I did it using the paint, but I didn't film it and I'm not really sure why, but you'll see it there, it'll just magically appear. and you'll say, "hey, there's a bumper on the tailgate." I didn't see Kelly do that, yeah, because I didn't film it.
Sorry, now let's get to this handy trim that we removed from the front, we're not going to do. Let's work on the back end because why would we want to try to cover those details when we don't need them? It will be glued to the plate, so I'm going to put a little modification on the back. back of this and there's really no need to put any felt or paint because this board is the same color as the burlap and that's what I'm going to use to cover this. I pulled out some of my scraps you can see this is a total scrap I'm saving it because it's a good size and will work perfect for this DIY so I'm going to go ahead and place it on the board when you try to adhere burlap to a board you need to be generous with the amount of mod podge that you're using because burlap is stiffer, it's thicker and so it's not going to stick as easily as fabric does, but really on the second layer when you go over it if you just you kind of slap it on a thick foam, your burlap in mod podge, it's going to stick really well and yeah, you know the drill again, you take our straight edge razor and you want to use a cutting mat, a non-slip cutting mat .
You'll want to cut the excess burlap using the board as a guide and it's pretty easy to do, you just need to make sure you have a good new blade to cut through it and the stiffer burlap cuts much easier with a utility knife. than burlap that hasn't been hardened, if that makes any sense, putting that mod podge on it just hardens it and makes it very easy to cut. I thought it would be fun to add our last name with the dollar tree wood. letters to the tailgate to spell our last name and grab some old Waverly wax.
You know, I'm going to incorporate that into a DIY. I'm going to give these wooden letters a good coat of that. Oh my god, would you watch how? nice looking I love that dark brown wood color with the burlap I will never get tired of this I really don't love this this screams at me I have so many people asking Kelly don't get tired of using browns and a DIY Why don't you incorporate some Teal and some pink? I can't do it guys. I just can not. I love brown too much. I really love it and if I wear teal and pink then I can't wear it in my house. then I have to make a second one and that's just not cost effective so I make it in browns so I can keep it in my house and I say if you want to use teal and pink because that's what's used in your house.
I say be creative and do it if it works perfect for you and I love it just look how amazing it looks rustic rustic rustic that's all I can say okay let's get back to DIY we'll grab some hot glue and I'm going to put this plaque back where it was when it was an Easter plaque, but now it's no longer an Easter plaque. I love it. Yeah, I bet when you guys saw this as an Easter plaque, you thought, wait, didn't that just say st? On St. Patrick's Day I made it, but Dollar Tree has these Easter plates right now, so you have to go grab one or two so you can make them yourself and, again, use the felt from the Dollar Tree.
I'm using black and white, no. I'm going to go over how I put it together. I'll just show you that the measurements for the white are, I think, 14 inches for the white and 15 inches for the black and again remember that you're going to need to fold that felt and fold it. We split it in half and then left a little extra on top to fold it a couple of times to make that opening to attach the rod for our banner hanger and now, using just a stick or two of hot glue, I'm going to continue forward. and outline my truck and you really want to make sure and outline it, not just put the glue in the center because you don't want your plate to fall forward off the felt, you want it to really stick to that felt so that when you're hanging it up it looks like it's from a single piece, so I made that mistake with the xoxo.
Originally I had put it in the center of the plates and they were hanging forward from the weight here in the rear window, you can see I put the word lucky now you can do this again two ways if you have access to the letters on the Dollar Tree sign, you can use them, they have them in several different sources, including sources that I don't show here and that would work perfectly for this. Or, you can always head over to Linda's store where you can get an instant digital download of these fonts and you will receive six different fonts in that digital download or if you want the die cut sent to you, you can choose any of the six fonts and she will send them to you with free shipping.
You can find the link to Linda's store in the description box below. Did I already say that? I went ahead and used the cardstock and spray adhesive. I sprayed it on the back and adhered it to this rear window and now I'm going to seal it again with a little bit of mod podge just because this is going to be outside and, yeah, I want it sealed and along with the letters I'm going to Go ahead and seal the wood letters also just to keep the dark brown color and you can achieve that by sealing it if it's outside they tend to fade a little bit and weather so that's why I want to keep my wood letters nice and brown and yes you can seal them with your mod podge or your waverly varnish of choice and would you look there how cute and stinky this thing screams St.
Patrick's Day even though it doesn't. I love these posters, how quick and easy they are. Well, look who's doing another voiceover on one of my DIYs. It's always fun to hear Kayla's take on me doing a DIY, so if you need a good laugh, I'll head over to her channel. You can find the link from her to her. video in the description box below, okay seriously how cute is this, it was quick, it was easy, it was cheap and I love the result and like I said before, I know Valentine's Day has already passed but I was so excited about this series that since just a few days ago I thought I was going to go ahead and make one anyway because all the items I need are not pieces of Valentine's Day decor that the dollar tree carries, they are items What can I get for a dollar? tree now so I wanted to go ahead and make it and get it ready for next year and next year when Valentine's Day comes I'll make a second one for my second banner hanger that's in the backyard but for now I think this is so.
A nice idea, I love that you can get this vinyl or cardstock and Linda's store for a very affordable cost. You're really not going to pay more than you pay at Dollar Tree and you'll get free shipping, and if you have a cricut, you're going to pay even less and you can download it and cut it out yourself. I love this one. I think it's fun to wear it for St. Patrick's Day. I didn't want to add any clover. because I just wanted it to be something rustic, something that would catch my eye and if I wanted to leave it out a little bit longer after St.
Patrick's Day, I didn't want to feel like I had to take it down, so I think just by incorporating Lucky, you understand what it's for. , but I think these are really fun little pieces and I really enjoyed making them and I can't wait to bring you more of these. If you all like this series, be sure to do so. Leave me a comment in the comments below and let me know what you think because I don't take your comments into account, so make sure to give this video a big thumbs up and let's get it out there.
