Launch Control: Climb to the Clouds at Mt. Washington Ė Episode 5.07Feb 27, 2020
Your records are made to be broken. Mankind has proven that time and time again setting a record put your name in the history books amongst the legends and in the world of
climbing the Mount Washington Auto Road is held in high esteem. The cameras don't do it justice. they don't show how narrow it is how the rope teeters from one edge to the other they reveal how deep it gets or the risk required to rewrite the record book every three years the hill
climbcommunity gets their chance they bring all the power they can muster gather their courage and determination this weekend Subaru Rally Team USA will attempt to renew their existing record is one that will stand the test of time the two drivers will race the lightest and fastest rally cars ever built in Vermont sports car in which they attempt to stamp their name this historic event that for over 100 years has been a true defining task for the team and the machine this is
control6:45 a.m. all is calm at the base of the mountain Subaru Rally Team USA arrives for the third straight day on the mountain pretty cool any day is this beautiful on this mountain where you had the opportunity to go faster than anyone has ever gone in place from recording I mean I was worried I was where there would be foggy days where it's going to be a rainy day and you know things change quickly on the mountain but it looks good we're here at super Mt Washington 2017 it's going to fly from an event amazing when the most ultimate driving challenges i think is certainly the biggest challenge i have ever come across in the last two days.
Will practice today. Teams will complete courses of up to seven and a half miles. 4600 to 5:00. A different terrifying strategy. with the fastest times in practice, both will start near the end of the session. David Higgins is the record holder from 2014 and the first of the Subarus today. These are anything but your standard rally cars this year. Rove gave us some beasts to go and try to tame the hill, they basically took out the rally engine, put in the GRC engine, and then stripped the car of anything that weighs, anything other than safety, they've lightened it up. with stiffer tarmac suspension and a great package and the rallycross show engine fitted giving them twice the power and torque they tested these machines earlier in the week and the outright speed was impressive to the point of be stressful. two cones from the first practice run my excitement becomes a pretty even split between panic and fear this is the fastest you've ever driven to the craziest man i've ever driven i really forget everything you've ever done before and come back to learn this this new way of driving this type of car my biggest competition is also my teammate David is a better driver has driven more has more experience driving can find the limits of the cars a little faster I find it by cras What I am the reality is that we have to go out there and beat each other as well to compete with David to be even in the same ballpark as David Higgins.
I have to take big risks. I have to do it. all the way up and these cars are so fast I'm nervous testing and off road practice now comes down to the business of replacing a record it's out of line without a co-driver this is a unique challenge they both spent countless hours on the mountain in preparation Higgins is flying if they pass the radar clocking 116 miles per hour a new speed
controlrecord back to the bottom of the mountain the two 800 horsepower Hill Climb cars between Higgins and Pastrana have started up the hill three times The Window one minute is all the time that remains between Pastrana and the mountain.
There are no split times to know what your teammate is doing. That's because this mountain is anything but forgiving. Hill cl imb took place, started on steam power and grew from there. Today a variety of classes are on the mountain, some just for the challenge, others for the class win and if you aspire to hold the record, while flank speed may end up at a higher altitude and Washington has a most complex and challenging task complete everyone here knows there is a chance to get back on board with Higgins his career has reached a fever pitch and David's focus at every corner is critical if his teammate behind him is to establish the reference time for the record today and there are a lot of wires all live very very similar let me get there with pace notes before the co-drivers and we know exactly where we're going to go exactly we're going to turn now you're going to on your own some of these corners , it could be a high speed for both vehicles and it could also be a really slow 3rd gear so now I'm trying to do everything I told myself not to do and n the last 20 years of rallying you know by find out what was the pacer for the local landmarks where things change and where you know the market stalls where the bailiffs are and get some pictures from the middle Practices I had like an overflow of an oil pipe that was leaking Vanaras burning and in the second my mind sighs I think about what that smell is I stopped remembering where the road was We are in a rally situation you always have the room the reminder of the road there I really ignore everything others around me and just keep focus stay in one area of ‚Äč‚Äčthe road this could be the race that rewrites the history book but it's not meant to be David unscathed but his record attempt has finished back on the line Pastrana got ready to start his race in less than a minute he rubbed his engine to get it up to temperature the pressure is thirty seconds to go and the organs race leaders stop their race before words form down the mountain there's been an accident at this point they don't know it's Higgins laying down red fire someone I don't know just told me requirements 24 ok Travis turn off his car save fuel let's go to send the four cars down for each row for everyone, we really have to recharge.
I want to push him back from the last boat so we are free in some cars that it looks like all the red flagged cars will have to restart. That's when the word is reduced to that it is David who has caused the black red and the problem those same distant motives. I don't know about the car oh you're right yeah well negative in this connection and the work you put into it and the fact that the house was going really well and it really got everything really really good on the flat spot but the importance is really bad if with some corners this did not lead to that.
I thought I had one more pasta course before there. it was a little late so tried to send enter and finish look what happens but i like the rocks to point while the twisted puck on the wheel it all stays there we like it game over? These things happen when you try and you know I've always said if you go fast enough to win the bank will pass the trivia event and that's evident today for David but it's almost higher now knowing knowing it's okay to go as hell the course clear the focus returns to Travis for the second time getting ready to depart this time there is no break from the equation the pressure is left slightly unstressed he is here to set a record that will stand the test of time through the ages speed draft lower than David at 110 mph, he's been serving his tires, which could help his time. further up the mountain down at base camp team awaiting updates on the metro facebook it's pretty rare that i get nervous about the idea of ‚Äč‚Äčthe cargo deck after all these years of doing it and then it kind of shoots up here like i'm saved of the accounts because I wouldn't really tell him to get set digitally either, but then you take out the extra power and less weight than the speed they're coming in now like it wasn't because, as he split, Pastrana is 1.5 seconds behind david, incomplete race but still ahead of the 2014 race page I certainly know I can break the old record with these cars if I can't it's not because the car isn't capable we should be literally 10 maybe 20 seconds faster than last year and right to right and around every corner looks almost the same some you have to break some you have to push them sounds really interesting because a lot of people leave thinking they are on the wrong Kauai because really at that point it's not just memory but the memory of where you are and if you get scared you tend to forget how much fat is left there are no openings there are no trees there are no markers they all look exactly the same and they are all different Visual Memory of Pastrana ory helps them remember the way while picking up the page when it comes to clues.
I can still tell you almost every track and every line and the changes every year. It's the same road we drove on, but these cars are so much better. Awareness of every corner, coupled with grit and car handling, is the making of a masterful race. Clear the tree line. Here you can see more of what is coming, but also the immense fall. aside the only thing that's gotten really hard on the driver now this year is everything i had dialed in florence flat wide open which i didn't even think about now they're breaking, sliding, turning so i have I have to re-learn this mountain, but I've always been able to climb to wherever the competition level is and I really think I'll be able to do it in this race, but I'm going to have to take my chances in the dirt and his pulse races, he He doesn't know it's light time but he's on tractors s Hated for the record, Higgins walked away carrying the team's torch off the dirt and into the fastest section of the entire mountain.
Commitment is required. The top is almost completely open. There are some sexes that are open but it has a oscillation on the inside of one side inside the other side inside this side and it's straight if you're perfect with the undulating road then the car jumps and if you miss the line so you have a flat and you're going we're doing that 120 with a 4000 foot infinity clip it's one of the scariest things you'll ever do in your life getting up into the
cloudsit's down the stretch / - the last turn and over the line a line has been established new record five minutes forty four point seven two seconds up and down the mountain performing the feat sets in a great job with the park it's amazing amazing really appreciate the help man all together work yea thank you fantastic job Travis them well done we are all really really happy py and congratulations awesome keep rocking good job mom please pretty good i think its Noble like so many races today we have almost everyone in the same car but you look around no one has the same fire no one kept the same wing someone has the same downforce the same horsepower the same turbo there are cars that really play front wheel drive like a free rat only a true american will climb inside the parade of victory with checkered flag in hand gives Pastrana a few minutes to himself a moment to let his achievements sink in there is a world of difference and I hate to point out the elephant in the room but usually I know he will cross the finish line and when i know before i start it's not in order i don't crash just to crash i got no answer oh thank you it meant a lot to me i want to get the record here mount
washingtonit's something very close to what everybody hire in vermont sports cars and come up with almost double osepower just no co-driver memorized and run you know its been months of work on that kind of thing im just memorizing sig It means a lot that you record that for the last 30 years they have only been shadows of seconds at a time. cutting almost doing it is really a test of our mettle that we were able to get out of the FBI here's a purpose built 800 horse Hill Climb that outperforms the cars here and we're working with a modified production car for this event and we shined and we think we've got the Best car on the mountain no matter what and we would challenge anyone to that and first with a record this car was amazing.
I know the Subaru Rally Team guys know that the stay will come. I'll be back with something even better next time. I know Dave is going to be hungry for this next time and I'd love to see anyone want to come in and any manufacturers want to try to get in. I think this is the beast here. This uber is the best I have ever driven that route up the hill was given a bit of work. Not saying it can't be beat but a 10 block Rhys Millen y'all get your perks here let's have some fun next time you open this mountain bring what you got.
