Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter: How they made their relationship last

inspiring love story. ABC senior national correspondent Steve ens Sami interviewed them both together a few years ago and what would be

their

last

television interview together. Steve joins us now from Atlanta and Steve in his special conversation that the Carters had. Some advice for all of us, good night. I sat down with them for their 75th anniversary a few years ago and we decidedly didn't talk about the news of the day. Instead, I received a master class on love and how to love. make a

relationship

last

, what advice would you give to people who want it to last?

First of all, choose the right person to marry and then, uh, give each other enough space, let the other person you meet have a full life in the way you choose and help when you can share a lot of things and do things together, always we look to do things to find things that we can do together, like fly fishing and bird watching and, um, just going out to the pond and, uh, every night. Try to make sure we are completely reconciled with all the arguments during the day and when we go to bed, so we also read the Bible every night and have for 60 years, it's probably hard to go to sleep.

You've read, uh, angry if you've read the Bible, so never go to bed angry, try not to try not to, it was clear even then that

they

had planned to walk together into the twilight of their lives,

they

were finishing prayers and thoughts. from the other, I just loved that we were talking about their

relationship

and a few weeks later a letter arrived in the mail and it was a bit of kindness. A week or so after that interview, I shouldn't have been surprised that Mrs. Carter was able to find me. so easily, of course, he had the US secret service at his disposal, but he still had it, it was a handwritten thank you letter, a little old school charm and blue ink, a little class , a legacy from Rosalyn Carter's desk, wow, a little treasure and a piece of history in your hand, Steve, thank you so much for joining us tonight, we appreciate it.
