It's HUGE! Building out my camper van workspace with 5K screen, new lights, and charge station

May 29, 2021
For the past two years, I've explored the far reaches of the western states in my custom

camper

van that my friends and I built from scratch. With each adventure, I discover new ideas for us to implement and further improve our bill from last year when I was back on the east coast, we embarked on a massive renovation that would increase the overall livability of the truck and I loved having these improvements during the last year. Now I'm back on the east coast again and I've been waiting. I go out and work with my friend Seth. He recently converted his three-car garage into a

huge

productivity

workspace

This spot is bookmarked and working here for the past few months has made me think about how I can improve my

workspace

and productivity in the van. Hello and welcome back friends, I'm really excited because in today's video we're making improvements to the truck, but before we get into that, I want everyone new to the channel to take a quick and dirty tour of the truck to see with what we are working on. here, this is Dora, yes, the official official name of the van. I've got two swivel chairs in the front, absolutely essential for any van build, so let's turn them around and make this into a proper room.

This is where I spend most of my time. the van, my custom workspace that my friend Johnny from the craft shop helped me design here. This is a new addition. They are incredible. I think they were walnut cabinets and they added a ton of storage space for me. The other thing I did was in the last renovation, which was also a complete game changer for me. We installed running water here. I have my refrigerator. This is an 81-quart ARB, making it one of the largest below. I have my cooking setup. Up here is probably my favorite part of the van because well I have a giant bed here now, it's not just a bed, now it can be turned into a couch for the most exciting part or at least what I think is the most exciting part . around the garage, so this is where most of the storage on my bill resides.

The entire construction is centered around the idea of these two sliding trays. That's it, let's give it some character. It gives me really easy access to everything inside because the garage. It's actually very deep, it's not just about having space to store things, it's about being able to access what you have there, so this system has been working great if you want to check it out in a lot more detail. we documented the entire build from start to finish, yes it's been doing pretty well for me, everything is held together and accomplishes exactly what I need, but today we're going to do it even better so right now I have these LED strips coated. the outside of the truck and they're like cheap LED

lights

that we have our name on.

I think they cost like 20 dollars. My biggest problem with these is that they aren't very bright, they don't have a productive feel, so I'm very excited for an upgrade. One of the first things I noticed about Seth's garage was how well-lit everything was and that was no coincidence. Seth believes that having a bright space to work in, regardless of the time of day or weather, really helps. keep it energetic and creative and I have to say I agree so this time we'll shine a light on Dora like the star that she is. They are serious. I'll dismiss you very quickly.
We did it right this time. The old ones we remove all the residual residue and flatten the surface on the top of the wood just to make sure that the new ones we will have a really good surface to glue on and they won't end up. peeling that's it, let's turn it on and say the other side and then turn it on you want to wait for the other one, okay, you're ready to see it. I'm very excited, so today is nice, it's nice and calm with high quality boosted. Holy cow, it's actually fucking daylight here.
I knew they were going to be brilliant, but they are brighter than I thought. They are much brighter than I thought they would be. They didn't lie with their website. Super bright LEDs. We were disappointed and for the first time not disappointed by our LEDs? I work with a lot of different battery operated cameras and we had the idea to put this nifty little charging

station

here, unfortunately it hasn't really let us down. It hasn't worked very consistently since the beginning of the truck, so yes, I'm excited to try to find an elegant solution for that and I have the right man for the job.
Seth, you used to work on car electrical systems and when I'm here with him, that's the time to do all this because he knows more about this than you, nobody I know, so I think that's going to make the biggest difference and, As I open this up, I don't get caught in the No more cables, which is

huge

, as expected, and made for some great quick work on the charging

station

, but we didn't stop there with this week's updates on the truck, we're going to add a lot more things that require more power, so it's absolutely essential to add some. more battery here the next thing I'm going to do while I'm here is put a voltage meter right here the first day in men we did a bunch today yeah now we have a voltage meter on the side so you have double the power and you can do a better job of monitoring it, which is great and that's also really good because the next addition that we're going to make, which is what I'm most excited about, what do you say?
I will surely consume the most power, right, we are placed on a monitor, not just a monitor. I'm not just any 27 inch monitor beast, the game plan is put it right here, boom, slap it there, perfect fit. and then it has to turn out and then it has to turn this way turn uh I was saying it's a problem to go out this way turn this way and then turn this way I have no idea how we're going to do that looking back at everything it's very easy, I can see the writing on the wall, yes this is not light, there is nothing either, there is nowhere to screw it, you have this like this and the thing just slides and falls off the moment you turn left.
Take the screws out of the wall or we'll mount it somewhere else, where else would we mount it here? The worst is worse. I ask for a smaller monitor. We have to solve the problem. We will come up with something you can't do. I don't want a small monitor. I'm sure you're right. You may now be wondering why I want this rebel monitor in my truck in the first place, and like many of the other upgrades, it all started in the garage on set. See set. I've spent quite a bit of time working side by side on our computers each week making videos and as I'm tethered to the small

screen

of my laptop squinting to see details in my video's timeline, I can't help but notice that Seth, well, isn't it?
It didn't take me long to see the benefits of a larger

screen

for both my eyes and my editing ability, and I knew right away that this had to be my next big upgrade. We think we pass and we have to do it. figure out if this is going to put the monitor in the position we want, then judging by this you would have a lot of adjustability, you would have the monitor right in front of you like this, now the edge could hit here, that's a legitimate Fear, it's almost like we don't know until we put it together, if we attach this to this arm, it won't be strong enough to hold it, it will rip the screws out of the wall, but we're going to secure it. and support the weight with our hands so we can play with it, so it's going to take a little teamwork and we're going to have to be careful, we agree, yes, we totally can, oh, it goes there, so now Let's see if it continues. the wall so I'm going to do a little rotation here, are you bending that thing?
Yes, I'm holding it up. Okay, now let's fold this like this. Oh, wait, wait, does this come down here? Do not look through the swing arm in any way. We'll do what we need, we still don't have a strong enough wall to permanently mount this heavy equipment on what would prove to be our biggest obstacle. I would love to put a piece of wood behind here it would be so sick. The amount of things we would have to dismantle to be left behind here is not trivial but we could do it. I'm what I say worry, I know you're worried, but listen to me, we remove the desk, we unscrew these. screws that are in the sheet metal that flex it backwards, the veneers are flexible and then we can see behind us and then we have the two-by-six behind us.
I mean, it would be awesome if we could put all of this back in there now, let's try sliding it in. okay, sorry, sorry, speakers, we're almost there, okay, oh, it's there, it's there, my goodness, wow, there's a really big piece of plywood that we have behind us and it's going to make it super strong. the veneer then we run all of our cables while having access to the entire panel. It's real, a hole in the wall, make a big hole and then the cables will go through that, oh well, and then we put this all back together and mount the monitor, take this out, okay, we're there, oh, it's solid, I don't even see the wall moving, take this, so take your laptop and plug it in there, leave your laptop closed, plug in the cable and just put it under that cable. is all you need now press your keyboard a couple of times or blink oh and it's just floating there does this just look at the dial? you're sitting in your truck super bright

lights

fucking gigantic monitor this looks positively ridiculous honestly I like it I just can't believe this here Alex look at this now.
I can watch it all at once and still have a big screen to show for it. It's like it's almost. Oh my God! You can't wait to edit now. I can't wait, friend. After a few finishing touches, securing the monitor safely, and finding a place for my laptop, we can officially call our van renovations complete, although we faced our fair share of trials and tribulations. I couldn't be happier with the way everything turned out now that my lights bring the interior of my trucks has life even in the dead of night my charging station gains extra battery ensures my power needs can keep up with my day job he behind news The miner 5k had me so excited to edit my video this week that I completely abandoned it Seth in his garage and he worked straight from the truck the entire time.
