The most important thing to know about this is that it has four levels of adjustment, number one right here on the front, you can adjust how high or low it goes and that will increase or decrease the reach of the shift knob, the second level of adjust that what you have is right here, it has three different levels that are marked by these hash marks, ma'am, if I get close to that, just loosen this with a socket, move it up or down and it tells you that if you go down, decreases the door gap if you move it up it increases the door gap, the next level of adjustment that comes with this is we can change the angle of our shifter right here so you can just loosen it up and it has this little indicator of quadrant here to show you. you know where you are and then you adjust it down, the next level of adjustment is we can adjust the height of the shifter and I really like that because I tend to prefer a shifter that sits lower.

I know some people like a tall shifter especially if they attract oki cars, but I like the ability to be able to shift it now to be able to install this, you're going to need some tools, you know, you're going to need some socket wrenches, you're going to need some push buttons on the panel and I'll put links in the description where you can pick this up. I'll also put links where you can get the torque wrench I'm going to use that measures one inch-pound because you're going to need it. What I wanted to point out is that each location on this shifter assembly is marked as it tells you here for this, when you loosen this bolt, it tells you that if you go this way, you will increase the travel if you go this way. you're going to decrease the throw it took, also mark everything that tells you what size hex bolt you're going to use for that also specify the torque in inch-pounds for each bolt, for example on this one and it has it too. in Newton meters as well as in pounds per inch, so 71 pounds per inch here will also tell you how many pounds of hinge and what size each part is of this is very well made.

I waited a few weeks for it to arrive because it had to be custom made, so we'll get into that, let's go to the garage real quick, get the old shifter out and then we can put them side by side and we'll compare and contrast the differences a little bit . they're all over the shifter body guys so I'm not going to do an installation video because acuity has an installation video and you know they did such a good job with it that I don't even want to try to make another one but I wanted to show you some key differences between the OEM shifter and the new improved shifter.
If you look at the previous videos, as I mentioned earlier, we made some improvements, the shifter, two of them are the rocker arm here from sharpness and then we made the stronger one. centering spring Interestingly, I noticed that the centering spring on this guy was much stronger than even the improved centering spring on this one and it seems like because we can fit more coils in here, I don't know to be honest. you, but it definitely feels that way. I can barely get it right and then this one is very interesting. The other thing to note about this entire shifter assembly is that it is made of plastic.
Everything is made of plastic. This one is done. I think some steel and aluminum is very interesting. In fact, the great thing about the installation video Accuity made is that it's 100 percent easy to follow. They show you how to set everything up, how to take apart the entire center console. The setup area looks harder and looks scarier than it actually is, but I wanted to show you real quick. We're going to install this and then I'll show you the new shift knob that I was going to get. standard insulated knob, but I found it on a shift knob that is a hybrid between a metal shift knob and an insulated knob, so I want to show you, so the shift knob that we are going to install today from a company called racing and racing makes a lot of different parts for cars and they are very very high quality and the first thing I noticed about this is that it has a center core that is made of metal and then you have this outer bead that can actually be changed with different shapes. outer cores and that way you can have it however you want every time you order it, they have a complete list, you know, this is called air change door, it shows you okay, if you have this type of card, choose door number three or door number five so you can search for any car you have and they will print the correct team order which is here and you can also get the center part with multiple colors.
I forgot the name of this color, but I'll be sure to put it down. on the screen for you in case you want to order one that is like this now. I didn't order the other outer layer that goes with it. Maybe in the future just to see how it feels, but on the outside here it has a Delrin Cap and it's very sexy, in fact the biggest difference I've noticed between this shift knob and the little shift knob. I think the little shifter weighs around 105 grams. I'll put it on the screen if I'm wrong. 470 grams and just for reference, about four hundred and fifty-five grams equals one pound, so this thing literally weighs four times as much, which is really interesting.
Many people like having weighted shift knobs because it helps them shift faster, oddly enough. Before installing it, we must remove the little gear lever. If you still have your original shifter here, I'll put a link to a video in the description where I installed the bit, but that will show you how you're supposed to uninstall it. the OEM shifter, but we are going to change this. The good thing is that we have a new shift boot retainer that is for the short time, but then we have a new shift boot retainer that is on the run saying now to change our shift boot retainer you are going to have to dismantle all this again.
I've taken this apart so many times it's not even funny, but I have to take it apart so we can change our shift boot adapter and they come off like this. We're going to remove that on both sides and then we'll remove that side like this, now we'll use a Philips head screwdriver. You have two of these screws that we need to remove right here, make sure you don't lose all of them. okay, put them in your cup holder or something, grab one on this side here and we'll use our popper here to remove it and lift it up like this, now this is going to come off and underneath we're going to have some different cables that we need to release for the Civic type-r, there are two on the driver's side and one on the passenger side, depending on your car model or Civic, you will have a different number of connectors than we have.
We're going to turn our boot over this way, so regardless of whether you're removing the OEM retainer or, in this case, I'm removing the little retainer, you'll notice that there's a flange on the inside and we're just going to cut it off. that and there you can see I took it out now we're going to take our new run saying shift boot retainer and inside the package the retainer is like a flange and it also has the retainer now the retainer here You're going to notice some orings these o rings will go down or actually when you turn it over, they'll be facing up and let me show you real quick, so just put them like this, okay?
I'm just going to pull it all the way until it's like above. I like to pull it up until the retainer and boot are almost level with each other. We're going to put our bridle on and I like to put on. the flange as close to the top as possible, while in this orientation it will be the bottom, but that way we get a nice clean line with the collar of the boot in the way it fits here and before I actually crouch On that flange, what I like to do is stick it in through the top to get an idea of ​​what it's going to look like and that's okay, and with this hand here I'm just going to keep the pressure pushing it down so it's like as close as possible and I can tighten this now, what that does is secure the flange all the way to the tip like that, we're ready to go, so what I'm going to do now is cut Remove the excess now, that's what we're left with here, so now we can just hook everything back up.
It's funny how these trim pieces go back into place much easier than removing them. One thing to keep in mind is this shift boot collar. It doesn't come with the shifter itself, you have to buy it separately, this one was about 10 or 15 dollars, they have an upgraded one that looks really cool and stuff and it says Racing and I think it's like 30 dollars or something, no I remember the exact price, so there are several that you can get, but in the box with the shifter you will get this adapter piece, and this adapter piece is selected when you order it now. the instructions say to use some blue loctite, but for the sake of the video, I'm not worried about any Loctite, but what you need to do is just make this work like this, okay, so we'll take a 15 millimeter wrench on the top here and we're just going to adjust it down.
I'm not worried about overtightening it or anything, but then you have this little set screw right here, which is a 4 millimeter allen, okay, and what that will do is control the orientation of our shifter, so the way What I do is screw this in and see where my shifter is right now. My orientation is pretty good, but I'm going to back off a little bit because I want to tighten it a little bit more and if I tighten it too much in the orientation that it's in, it's going to be crooked when it's tightened, if that makes any sense, so what I'm just going to do is remove this Allen.
Okay, this Allen head just a quarter turn, now I'm going to tighten it again. Now I overact it a little bit, as you can see, this is not straight, so now I can redo it again, so it's really nice because regardless. What kind of car you have, you can totally modify and adjust the way the numbers look and everything, so now let's go for a spin and see what this really feels like and see what I think about it so far, above, okay guys. I thought I would give you my kind of safety shifter review. I've been driving with it for over a month and will probably go a little over six or seven hundred miles inthe car since I installed the shifter and I think there are a lot of things you should know about it in regards to how it feels after you first install it versus how it feels after you install it because there are some significant differences that I think you should keep in mind Note that number one, let's talk about the installation process because as I mentioned before, I didn't do an installation on this because Acuity has an awesome video on how to install it and I'll link to it below.
One thing I will say about that is that I've taken the shifter assembly apart so many times, you know, the first time we did a couple of you know, shifter upgrades and then we did a little more gear upgrades. shifter and then you know we did stage one, stage two, so as of now we have the shifter cable bushings that are in the engine compartment and then we have the complete shifter unit with the install definitely wasn't as bad as I expected, I actually felt like this install was easier than just doing a stage two upgrade because with the stage one and stage two upgrades you do you have to take the shifter apart OEM to install it. the pieces, whereas with this one you just put it in and put it in and tighten everything up and we go to town.
Now let's talk about the settings, so I left all the settings exactly as they were at the factory, so from the factory you have different options for door clearance and shifter travel and you have different options for door height shifter all kinds of stuff and I just left all that stock how did you make sure though to torque everything to spec before you installed it because they are not factory torque so make sure you do that if you get this make sure you torque all the way down, all the torque specs are there on the side, as I mentioned before and you should be fine now if you're the type of person that thinks you're going to modify it later, there is a way to reinstall the center console that will leave the exposed sides.
I'll link to a video about that. I think Palin has that video. I didn't do it, I just left it as is and figured if I didn't like it I would just rip it all out again. We'll go over first impressions of how it felt after installing it for the first time. Then we'll review, you know? how it felt after I got it in because there's a three to five hundred mile break-in period with the shifter so I don't know what this camera angle looks like but I wanted to make sure we could get the shifter you know in the shot so far the shifts are very stiff and you know from what acumen told me there could be a break-in period of two to three hundred miles and what that means is all the grease and lubricant that you saw on the shift lever. changes has to break down and be absorbed into the metals and they said it will slide much more from now on, although very little clay and the first very little and the second very little and the third very little and then very chargers a little. a little bit there in fifth and there's a little bit more in six and then in neutral that centering spring is super stiff so it's almost like there's no play, the gears are a little stiff right now during the shift and I thought that we would go zero to sixty pull here in a second and we'll see how it's actually doing waiting for this truck to move and we'll do a zero to sixty survey okay let's go to our plus mode and we'll turn off the traction control completely off I'm going to turn off the air conditioning, let's reset this.

time so far with this tune and these bolts so far has been five point three two. My initial first impression was that the shifter was very stiff and very uncomfortable at the time. Right off the bat, almost irritatingly stiff, you know, before we do any shifter upgrades, we know from the factory. I had a problem with my shift lever and it was when going from fifth to sixth.
I always found that I would get stuck in 6th gear for some reason. it just didn't want to go into six and then, you know, I did the stage 1 and stage 2 upgrades and while they really helped the shifter feel, they didn't really help it go into sixth gear more than usual and then you know, after I installed it and was driving it with first impressions, that problem was still there, you know, for the first few hundred miles, but some of the advantages after first impressions is that the commitment is much more solid, there were times, you know, when I first went.
Driving it, I really felt like I had to turn it hard to put it into third gear all the way and then you know a lot of gears were like that and then the door spacing is definitely a lot tighter, there's definitely no play when it's in gear. I mean, you'd really have to try really hard to get some play, it definitely inspired more confidence even when it was stiff because it made sure you had to try really hard to make sure you're going. Now, the downside to that is that it kind of slows you down when you have to try so hard at first.
I thought, "I don't know if I really like this. I do, but there was something about it that just didn't feel right to me right now. Go ahead, 600 miles later, the redline is sneaking up on me with this car. I'll say that, so I I find a lot, especially passing people like I did there, where I'm like in shit. I'm already reaching the red line. I don't realize it even after ten months of ownership. I still haven't gotten used to that lower red line. of the 8th Jim I love this shifter I mean there's a fifth gear here I have no play that's legit and down here in fourth gear Zero play Third gear Zero play Second gear Zero play Also almost all gears they have zero play, which is nice.
I love how precise this new shifter is. I love everything about it. I could probably shorten the shifts a little bit, you know? I left the shift release and the position it came from from sharpness, so in theory I could, you know, offset them a little bit, but you know, I'm actually not that worried about it, it's shorter than it's original, but sometimes it's not too short. You can be too short and you just think, wait what's going on here, so I might try it later with a shorter setting, but as of now I'm completely happy and this new shift knob, you know, it's a hundred.
I've been between a hundred and 109 degrees outside every day and you know, with this Delran cap on, I have no complaints, it never burns my hand and I can change the minute I get in my car, if I leave it out of the sun , it's not stiff anymore, you know they were absolutely right from the factory, it definitely has an adaptation period, now the shifts are effortless, there's almost a positive click when it starts up, but I don't know, I don't feel like it anymore. be annoyingly stiff, there is still no play in any of the gears like I said, if you want some play you can really push it to get play, but that centering spring is so strong that surprisingly there is virtually no play in any of the gears after it broke in my 5th gear, the 6th gear lock is no longer there.
I never feel like I have a problem going from fifth to six, whereas before I sometimes try to adjust the six and go in fifth and fourth, which definitely eases up, but it didn't. up to about four or five hundred miles and since it broke it's definitely a lot smoother, in fact it's so soft and buttery right now that I barely feel like having an aftermarket shifter, not that it feels same as the original, but it no longer feels like something has been done to the car, it just feels like it's a more pristine version of the stopped car, whereas before filming it definitely felt like something had been done to the car, yeah Does that make any sense at all.
I don't know now that we've talked about what the installation is like from initial impressions and what it's like after the break-in period. Let's talk about some competition right now. The only competition is the hybrid racing shifter which are basically like the same shifters, there are some differences that I'm not going to go into because I don't have one you know, so I can't really say if it's better or not Better than the previous. competition, I know it's a little more expensive than the competition by maybe fifty dollars, but reading on forums from people who have owned both, a lot of people say that with the hybrid shifter there is a lot more lateral play when in gear versus sharpness shifter could be wrong and if I'm wrong on this, let me know in the comments.
I think the sharpness shifter has more adjustment range than the hybrid shifter. Now there was a rumor that circulated a while ago by some people. that said the sharpness shifter changed the angle of the shifter cable every time you're going to shorten a shifter you're going to release the. I forget what it's called, but the little ball that goes into the shifter you're going to be dropping that more to get shorter shifts every time you do that with any shifter, obviously change the angle of the shifter cable , the shorter you make the throw the more angle adjustment there will be on the cable and over time if you shorten anything, things too much, now you can break the shifter cables, from what the acuity guys told me, they did so even on the shortest setting it won't add much strain to the shifter cable so you shouldn't have anything to worry about especially when combined with the shifter cable bushings because there are bushings sphericals that move like this, allowing the shifter cable to move freely, so the added angle essentially doesn't even affect it and I haven't had it.
Any issues I don't know if I will do that yet but that's just what I have to report on it so just from what others have said they felt that even though the sharpness shifter is about 50 bucks more you get a lot more for your

money

. I can't say 100% because I haven't tried the other one yet, but that's just what I heard. What are the pros and cons of this? Would I buy it knowing what I know now and its advantages? are one hundred percent, you can basically control every aspect of your shifting experience. It doesn't make your car faster, but it will eliminate some, maybe it won't stall, but it definitely eliminates a lot of the problems we had with the OEM shifter.
I know if the 2020 shifter still has those issues, but some people had lockups and certain gears, some people had second gear grinding. I can one hundred percent say that every time I got a second gear grind it was because I didn't have my foot all the way to the ground and I held myself back in the moment, so every time I make a conscious effort to get my foot all the way to the ground, I never I move for a second, that just happened, but with this shifter it hasn't happened yet, but that could be because I trained my brain to make a conscious effort before installing it.
The next Pro is definitely fixed. He could fit into the lock six he was getting. I never accidentally shift into fourth gear like I mentioned above. The Next Pro is a complete unit, all you have to do is tighten everything to spec and put it in there. If you want to change it later you will have to install it where the sides of your center console are not there so you can modify it, but maybe that's something you want to do, maybe it's not right now, the price could be an advantage or a disadvantage depending how you look at things, depending on how much

I mean, if it's not worth it to you, it's not worth it to you, IMHO, I definitely feel like it's worth it. Just because I don't have any of the problems I had with the original shifter and so I definitely think it's worth the money. Some of the downsides are the break-in period, but that's to be expected with almost any piece except for me. You know, at first I didn't think I was going to like it, as I mentioned before, when I first installed it, I went for a disk. I liked it, but I thought, man, this is a little annoying and stiff and unfortunately, over time, it definitely loosened up.
I 100% love the new shift knob and I don't mean to criticize the sharpness, you know, if you want, if you want an isolated shift knob, I mean the sharpness makes them. I just want one that has the core. so I can have mine so I can have my door pattern on there and also have the color match, you know, it's been one hundred and eleven degrees every day and I left my car in the sun onanother day, I came back in and the shifter Actually, it wasn't even attractive with that Delrin cap around it, it's perfect so I 100% love it, so overall I'll say this if you're not sure if Do you want to do a stage one, stage two or you know. the complete unit if you don't want to buy the complete unit all you really need is the shifter cable bushings which will give you eighty eight percent.
