Is the Ford EcoBoost Reliable? Owners Tell Us All! Dude, I Love or Hate My New Ride @HomeEdition

May 07, 2020
Hey,

tell

me what our f150 is known for. I don't know if it's Ford, yes of course, but they are also known for being turbocharged, which introduced a 2.7 liter and a 3.5 liter twin turbo engine and the controversy has been raging ever since. These engines are

reliable

, at this point the EcoBoost engines came out almost 10 years ago so they've been around for a while and we're starting to see higher mileage numbers on these trucks and it's a big question we get all the time. they like it for the long haul, yeah, and in this episode, man,

love

it or

hate

my trip home edit, we have the answer to that question because we have three

owners

who have put significant amounts of mileage on their EcoBoost f-150 and Nos They'll guide you and

tell

us what they like and what they don't like and what's broken and what hasn't, so hopefully by the end of this video we'll answer that old question about stuck turbos. in a truck, it's a good or bad idea.

Now, the first two we're going to profile have pretty typical mileage for the age of the trucks. You'll want to stick with the third one though because it has incredibly high mileage numbers. and let's start with Jason Jason has this red f150, it has the 3.5 liter EcoBoost, let's learn a little more about this, there you have it, record the video please, and this is my 2014 f-150 XLT with the EcoBoost of 3 v that I bought. It was used in April 2018, so I had it for exactly two years. It had 39,000 miles. Now I have 71,000 maintenance. Well, you can see here.

More Interesting Facts About,

I had to start keeping track at about 50,000 miles. I was doing so many things. There's no way I could remember it all. One of the first things that happened to the truck at about 55,000 miles. I started having engine failure when accelerating hard. They turned off cylinder number three. They threw it and coded it. and I almost went into limp mode, it felt like the spark plugs. I took out what I assume were factory spark plugs and as I was taking them out I was checking the gap on all of them and they were all over the place, no um, no two spark plugs had the same gap.

I replaced them with some Denso Iridium with about 30 spacing and that fixed the problem, the truck runs great, so after that I had a bad O2 sensor, which you know is a common maintenance. Which is no big deal, of course, oil changes and normal maintenance. I changed the front pads and rotors at about 63,000 miles. I put new rear brake pads on and at that point I had to do that too. I went ahead and bought a hardware kit and swapped it out. In the emergency, the parking brake hardware, the actuators that control the parking brake, were completely seized.

I just didn't use it enough, I guess, and it just corroded in the salt here in West Virginia. I have some good equipment. Wrangler dirt track tires. The truck has a 331 rear. Ian is not the best at towing. You can see? I have a trailer with that axle there that I pulled ATV and folders on, but it pulls, you know, it's a cliché, but like there's nothing behind it, it's the best pulling truck. Overall I've always driven really like the truck and I just want to thank you guys for doing what you do for the hours and hours of entertainment I've been watching since you know Andre was just checking the temperatures on the trailer brakes and just got allowed him Speaks Russian, but great videos, keep up the good work, okay Tommy, there you go, it's a long list of problems he's had, but interestingly he still

love

s his truck.
Yes, he will actually keep this F-150 that he is happy with. the performance and the EcoBoost and it's true that for the age of the truck there is a tremendous amount of horsepower with those winter arches, yes, and the question of course is what rates its

ride

, Tommy? I'll give it an 8 because Well I gotta tell you I'm not a big fan of those chrome wheels but I like the tires so I'm taking two points off for too much Chrome, sorry mate that's a perfect analysis. I'm going to give them an 8 out of 10. Well now we have Jake, there is no Chrome on Jake's truck, there is no Chrome for sure, look even the fourth logo has been removed, that's right, and you will see three five five badges twin turbos throughout this vehicle, which Jake is very proud of. from his ego boost and he's from Alaska cool, ready, yeah, play the video, what's up everyone today?
We showed you my 2013 f150 fx4, the truck right now has 70,000 miles still young in the front we have Bilstein leveling struts that are set at two and a quarter inches, the truck was level at one point in the rear. I have a one and a quarter inch spacer riser. The truck is sitting, as you can see, on 35-inch tires. Here we have some ditch lights installed on the rear and put on the bumper on which they are mounted and connected a vie air air compressor which is all controlled here by a switch panel there is my air chuck it has a boost gauge on my SCT x4 tuner this has a five star tune TfL I know you guys love five star tuning You work with them a lot obviously on the front you can see there is a different intercooler on the truck.
I just installed this full race intercooler that will allow me to run our winch here like you guys did on the gen one. after you had or I can and I can also run as a previous bumper to the owner. I have a catch can that is very good to have on a directed injection engine, so this is a dirty side catch can and I also have a clean side catch can. SMB cold air inlet. I have individual performance off road downpipes on this and I also have an aero exhaust which they don't make anymore, unfortunately it's quite loud.
I feel like the neighbors

hate

me, but I'm just going over a couple of problems I have. I got the truck, my rear defroster stopped working, which apparently is pretty common on these trucks. At one point I had a noise when starting. Some things online said it could be caused by a poor oil filter allowing drainage, but I haven't had that. In about two years I started using better oil filters and the problems seem to go away, so they might be correct. My most recent problem was a sticky thermostat. The truck overheated a couple of times when towing a fairly light caravan on the tongue.
Only about three thousand pounds or so, but towing some pretty steep grades here in Alaska, I went in and changed the thermostat. I put one that was 10 degrees colder and tried to get more help. My Bilstein shock absorbers are malfunctioning. about fifty or sixty thousand miles on them, they're definitely not as good as when they were new so time to trade them in, super happy with the truck and kind of full without it if you ask my wife, but it's a good truck , the EcoBoost is a lot of fun. I have a YouTube channel if you have any questions or if you want to see more about this truck it's called not so Quaker okay guys thanks I appreciate you watching all of us and well that.
The truck was certainly Tommy heavily modified and blacked out for the Nine or like TENS, let me ask you this, you see, the little 3.5 liter twin turbo engine is that factory. I don't think so, of course not, neither is the little 3.5 badge. along the side but I like looking at this truck the monochrome white on black looks great it almost looks like a raptor if you squint and it sounds pretty good for an EcoBoost ooh it has that performance exhaust yeah and me I like where you put your Max track buddy, so I'll give you a 9 out of 10 on that truck.
It's nice to see something that's Alaskan and obscured. I guess on summer nights in Alaska you'll always see it because the sun never sets. bottom right, I don't know what that all means, let's move on to the next one, what do we have here and how many miles does this truck have? Do you want me to tell you or do you want to wait and find out? I think it has a lot, it has a lot, yeah it's the highest mileage truck on our list and let's see if the owner Zach still likes it, yeah okay what's going on with the Vaseline car?
This is my 2012 Ford f-150. With one hundred and seventy-one thousand miles on it, I've had it for about five years I think, and it's been a really solid truck. This is the max towing package with a 373 rear. In fact, we used it to tow our fully loaded 11k pounds. 11 thousand pound camper when it's dry it's about eight I have the KO two 265 Seventeen in there I also put these cool ones so you can see they're called Monroe sensor track shocks they're really great for hauling and helping with the roll. and the trailer crew also installed Timberland Sumo Springs.
I think that's what they are called to help with the weight of the trailer. He also installed a rearview camera, of course, because these things can be a little difficult to back up and into. The trailer also has a Flowmaster 40 series muffler, nothing special it's just welded to the stock, yeah it's been a really solid truck, courses two EcoBoost, three fives and this truck runs, believe me we've taken it to Amarillo to Palo Duro pulling. towing up an 8% grade fully loaded down here is pretty much original apart from the little flak inlet the only thing I've done under the hood is I made a timing chain a while ago, I didn't do it myself I did it in a local shop and it was a real pain in the ass, they had to remove the entire front clip and take the entire front of the engine apart and the guy told me he would never do another one because it was very complicated here when it starts, the exhaust is not too noisy, which I like a lot.
I have my Bully Dog tuner here, which I really like. I have it set up often right now so it's on as an 87 octane tone tune as the fuel. They call it a budget tone, but if you put the premium tone on and have everything set up the right way, you can have it. I think it's like another 90 horsepower or something, going seventeen point four, average 172 thousand miles on this thing and then this. The track is two-wheel drive, but it has the rear walker, which is really nice, and of course the integrated brake controller, which they have to have.
We installed Rancho ReadyLift shocks, so it's just a small 2-inch leveling kit for the truck, but it's kind of like that. It's funny, my friend and I did this ourselves and you can see that this one has the fit right here, but on the other side it's actually backwards, which sucks, but I don't think it affects anything, but yeah, they've been really cool, that's about it. Guys this is my 2012 Ford f-150 EcoBoost 373 we are on the max towing package it is a really cool little truck that was great so Tommy we have answered that old question our EcoBoost is

reliable

no , we have a sample size of 3 here.
I don't think it's a fair representation, but it's cool to see what real world

owners

are doing with their trucks and how they perform. I don't disagree, I think we have answered it in a way. It really depends on the truck, it depends on the owner, it's like any other truck, right, it may not be any more or less reliable, it really depends on you, how you maintain it, how you maintain it, how it's used, you know if it's towing, if it is. towing a lot yeah a lot of variables yeah so by the way guys if you want to send us hey

dude

I love our hate because I'm really looking to take videos.
