Is the best MacBook ever made still good enough 6 years later?Jan 14, 2022
so for the last six
macbookpro here has basically been considered the king the
madeit's the high end dual graphics 15 inch mid 2015
macbookpro this has been the one to buy , the one that people skipped a whole generation because it was so fucking
goodbut it's been six
yearsnow these things are going up there it's the older macbook pro that
stillsupports mac os monterey and that begs the question this has been the
bestof the best for six years but it's
enoughnow in 2021 so today we're going to try and find out if this is
stilla viable machine to go out and buy be sure to subscribe because it's going to be fun let's jump to the video today's is sponsored by ifixit because i'll let you in on a little secret folks these macbook pros are upgradable heck yeah you can upgrade the storage yourself it doesn't take much effort and ifixit is here I went to help him. so i have links below if you want to learn how to upgrade the storage on your 2012 to 2015 generation macbook pro it's very easy to do ifixit has got you covered they have the parts tools and resources to do all of that so check out the links in the description below thank you so much to them for sponsoring today's video and now let's get back to it so I've actually had a couple of these mid 2015 macbook pros for the last four years and they've been really really good so I bought my first one in 2017 and that was almost identical to this one actually this configuration is the 2.5 gigahertz core i7 16 gigabytes of ram one terabyte of storage and the radeon m370x graphics so that's basically the same configuration that i bought in 2017 that i owned That one for about a year and I sold it for more than I paid for.
I've had this particular one for over a year now and have
everal videos on it talking about how it continues to hold up but now I've had another reall great development which is of course the fancy new stuff the m1 pro and the m1 max, and this is kind of the spiritual successor to everything that made this macbook pro so great. I mean you have to understand people literally skipped five years of macbooks how good it was and it's not just because of its performance that wasn't the only reason if you look back at the Intel Macbook Pro 16 inch obviously it's a lot faster than this we're talking about a Haswell i7 pretty much old amd ddr3 ram graphics like this isn't a snappy new computer but the reason people kept these things I mean it's really quite simple is the keyboard and ports that's why these things stuck and in a really weird move these new macbooks are actually apple acknowledging that everyone was right all along all of us professionals here who have been saying for six years that this was the best macbook we were right apple admitted we were right that's why they gave this to me a look at the side profile of these devices we have a usb interface now of course it's usb type-c huh and lu ego we also have sd card and hdmi it's the same setup i mean what else do you need this is literally apple saying hey sorry you were right all along we'll go back to what worked before but you know it's 2500 just to start this particular setup with the m1 max 64 gigabytes, this is four thousand dollars, this is not in the realm of where a lot of people are buying and that's why it's worth asking the question, can we go back?
Can we look at a six year old macbook that is now over $500 compared to $4,000 and still find merit in this six year old? year old design we have to start by evaluating this by talking about the elephant in the room and that's performance and frankly it's not great this is a six year old device it has a haswell i7 quad core this is from the peak what I like to call the period of complacency where int Basically I wasn't changing a lot of things look at 2011 Macs i7 hyper quad core you look at Max from six years
laterthey're still running i7 hyper quad core from 2011 to 2017.
Intel had no competition, they had no motivation to change things, and as a result, I'm running cinebench here. This thing has a cinebench r23 score of 36.76 so for reference it's pretty similar to a lot of quad core machines it's almost actually they're identical to the 2016 and 2017 macbook pros so that's pretty interesting because they're much more affordable and so you'll also get pretty similar performance to the 2018 2019 quad core 13 inch macbook pros so that's something to keep in mind these are also more affordable than those and unlike all things 2016, 17, 18 and 2019, there's no butterfly keyboard here, so take it for what it's worth, which is probably a lot, though something else. what you might already be able to hear is the fans so I'm not even done with the first run we already have fully active fans here it sounds like our cpu is running at 96 degrees Celsius so why am I mentioning it right? this is still right Intel One of the main reasons this was considered a fantastic package is because it didn't have the same thermal throttling issues we saw on the 2018 macbook pro.
This generation was praised for being comparatively not that bad, but now. that we're comparing our frame of reference to apple silicon this is still not good i mean we're talking about 97 degrees here the fans are pretty loud and i've only been pushing the cpu for a minute or two, ok this is getting too loud i have to remove it it's going to mess up my audio ok we also burned a little more battery than i would have thought given how short the test was huh keep in mind you know we have a discrete graphics card here it's pulling like 35 watts when t What's in use we have a 45 watt cpu like this it's going to eat up your battery much faster than newer macs You also know that it is a six year old computer.
I don't know how many cycles are in this uh 386 so it's definitely on the lower side because you know a six year old device like this so that's one of the other caveats you'll have compared to Apple silicon you know you're going to get hot you're going to get noisy you're not going to get great performance you're not going to get fantastic battery life yet you know we're talking about a 500 pack compared to even a thousand bucks or 850 for a macbook air refurbished you could still argue that's a pretty significant difference in price and I'm getting a terabyte of storage here so that's something we can't rule out that's another big thing to look out for with this generation of macbook pro is storage is upgradeable you can upgrade it yourself at home super easy you can buy a direct replacement an oem ssd which i would recommend because those uh tend to boot very logically and consistently you can also use 3rd party ssds with adapters i'll link them below but those a sometimes they will panic in the kernel or shut down unexpectedly they can have strange behavior um so if you just go to eBay and buy an OEM one terabyte drive boom upgrade your drive there you go that's a really huge thing to have you can't upgrade the ram on these of course that's been a thing now for about 10 years but the fact that you can upgrade the storage yourself on a macbook sub 500 which is really very big so yeah it's definitely a take with your device doesn't feel huge doesn't feel very heavy huh but you get that 15 inch screen now obviously they're not 16.2 inches it's not mini led it's not promo it's a normal 2880 by 1800 retina display however we're talking about a 5 00 with a 1440p plus ips display fantastic viewing angles excellent color accuracy great peak brightness this is a great display by money the big problem to be aware of with these particular macbook pros especially if you try to buy one really dirt cheap is that you will find that anything is too good for you a truth its because there are issues with the screen coding which was a big problem almost all retina macbook pros still have so its something apple hasn't fixed yet really be very careful because if you buy one that is super delaminated it looks very ugly and not much you can do about it so i would definitely spend a little more and buy one that isn't delaminated and then just how to take care of it but overall i think this design held up very well we have magsafe we have the same classic grilles from speakers on the side of the keyboard we have the shiny apple logo on the back which a lot of people really want ed this to come back this is one thing apple was like no this is gone forever but really overall i wouldn't be able to tell that this is an almost 10 year old design that was released in June 2012. it's crazy that it still looks so good dated, it sure is 10 years old.
No, not at all, this looks great for its age, but because this is a 2015, we actually have a Force Touch trackpad which is something you'd take for granted if you've had a Macbook that's newer. than this but this is where the force touch trackpad started it's simply the best it's simply the best if you're using an older macbook and have never used a force touch trackpad go to an apple store and try one you can I won't be back sorry , this is the best touch panel in the business and this is where it started. This is the first macbook pro to have the keyboard back.
The same history. butterfly so literally nothing to complain about this is the quintessential macbook keyboard one thing to complain about is the speakers this is the year before apple really stepped up their audio game and they have really been stepping it up with the 2019 16 inch and now with the new macbook pros the audio is fantastic here not so much listening to it is a bit harsh right the new macbooks i listen to music i watch youtube videos sometimes i even edit videos just on the built in speakers this macbook pro wouldn't do that these are ok if you need them but for everything else its air pods or headphone jack for me it has everything you need nothing crazy not crazy good performance not great graphics not Ni I don't even have a Thunderbolt 4.
That's one thing I'd like you to know that Thunderbolt 2 isn't the most useful interface anymore. We have USB 3 ports, so that's good. We have HDMI. We have SD card. We have mag Safe. What else do you want? that's the story of this computer yes its no better than what you can buy now which was the case in 2016 2017 even 2018 but when you consider the fact that this is a 500 laptop sometimes even 400 frankly that doesn't really bother me right this is 500 bucks to 500 bucks if I expect this thing to have class leading performance being able to chew through 4k footage that's an unreasonable expectation right it's six years old that's 500 bucks , what do you think? wait but for what it's a fully usable big screen computer for daily tasks you could edit photos you could edit light videos this can totally handle it that's fantastic now I'll offer a caveat and that's to keep an eye on m1 macbook airs because it's a thousand bucks new so double the price of this stuff is 850 at the apple refurbished store and you can get these pretty often so if you're buying one of these and you end up saying like or well i want get one that is in good condition with the included charger with a full spec terabyte loaded.
You start pushing up to 650 once you get to that point 650 bucks I would say let's take a step back and say okay 200 bucks is all that stands between this and a macbook air m1 at that point you really should consider making that jump to 500 i think you're in a good place here but watch out for the macbook air m1 because that's the biggest threat to moving this forward in terms of value I'm curious to know what you guys think so let me know in the comments below and with that I'll see you guys in the next video.
