Introducing More Techniques to Carve this Fleur de lis

Jun 08, 2021
welcome to the papaya workshop today is another day in the shop doing the 3d carving in some cases people call it two and a half carving but either way it's a lot of fun and

this

is what i'm doing i took a clip art and put it inside from

this

pocket. I'm taking the v card text and putting it into a curve and I'm doing lots of other tips and tricks that you don't want to miss so let's get started. I opened up the feed cart probe and we're going to create a whole new file so I'm going to click on that now size wise it's going to be a one sided project we're going to have the job size at 11 a quarter by 11 one quarter by three quarters of an inch and this is going to be a premium pine board that I have left over from another project the z 0 position is going to be on the surface of the material and I'm going to use the xy reference position right in the center now because this is a modeling project I've selected the high and normally I would start as a standard and go to the next level to set it to the high setting and then I'm going to click ok now that I have the workspace set I want be able to go ahead and start the project now the size of the project we're going to do i'm going to make it very similar to the same size you don't want to have a lot of white space around it you want to keep it to a minimum so you can start this p I project and I want to be able to zoom in on what I was doing last time, I'm going to go down and click on the modeling tab and what it shows up here is the components and it shows level 1. now we're going to make a dish again similar to what I did before but this time we're going to bring in the clip art and create it and place it on the plate unlike what we did with the eagle so what I want to do in this level one I want to right click on this and I want to change the color of it name and what i'm going to do is just call this the renamed plate i want to go and find my plate so i want to go back to the clipart and in v

carve

pro a lot of the different clipart comes with it and what i'm going to to do is go down and look at the domes and the plates now they have a range here this first one is 30 degrees this next one is 45 degrees this one is 60 degrees and this one is a little bigger this one is 90. and for the um clip art that we are going to put on this I think I'm going to go ahead and start with that so just double click on it and go ahead and place it right in the middle now that I have the dome in place I want to go back and show you under the modeling tab we had . the plate and now we have the dome plate and that's the 60. that's what's in place now i want to resize this i don't want to keep it round because the floor of the lead i'm putting on this is going to be a lot taller than it is wide, so I'm going to go back to the drawing tab under the transform objects.

I want to be able to push the size of the selected object. Right now it's bound for x and y and I want to unlink that and I'm going to put this in place of the five and a half I'm going to go ahead and put this at 6.5 and then I want this higher and I want to be able to put this at 8.5 and then we're going to hit apply to that now give me a nice oval to work with now what i want to show you also now if we rotate this is actually a very tall dome and we have to reverse that i want to be able to turn this into a plate so i'm going to go ahead and reposition this and we're going to turn this object into a plate so my front elite can sit inside that now something else I want to point out is if I hover over this object you can see down here at the bottom exactly how tall it is so if I go up here towards the center which is 1.8 inches very close to 2 inches tall and as I move it towards the edge you can see how it changes so that's a good reference point reference for to be able to use when you're working with the drawings and I said before that I was going to expand a little bit on what I did in that first video so this is part of it now I want to be able to go and create the plate so what I do is go right down here to the modeling tab.

More Interesting Facts About,

introducing more techniques to carve this fleur de lis...

I want to make sure my dome plate is selected, then I'll go up here to this little wrench icon and we're going to click on it now. I don't want this at 1.8 inches that's going to be too deep if you want or at this point it's too tall so we're going to change that and I think whoops let's highlight it I think at half an inch deep um we have three quarters stuff of an inch if I go half an inch that might be a little too deep let's go ahead and go with 3 8 of an inch to make it 0.375 and I want to be able to instead of having this dome i I want to be able to have it where it's a plate I'm going to select this here and then you can see update someone is going to go head over and close that now and let's take a look at this now it looks completely different so i want to be able to rotate this again and now you can see what it looks like where it's actually a plate also notice what it looks like it's just hanging in the air and that's because it's negative space and from the point of view of working with negative space we need to get a reference plane there which will make it a lot easier to be able to see to work and be able to

carve

so I'm going to go over here where you have this add a plane component with zero height so I'm going to click on that and add this plane and now when I turn this around now it looks

more

like a piece of wood and that zero plane is placed there and you can see exactly what's happening now I'm going to go ahead and reset this again so now we have the platter we can work with and we can see the rendering here so everything has been updated at this point so now that I have this partially completed the next thing I want to be able to do is take the clip art and be able to start working on being able to put that clip art on this plate and put it on What I'd like to be able to do is create another layer and be able to put that floor removal on that new layer so what I'm going to do now is go back to the modeling tab and I want to be able to get here to the plate because that's our prime r level and I'm going to right click on that and I look down here and it says insert a new level so I want to click on that so now you can see the new level has been added and it's just above the first level right above the plate so now I just want to right click this and I want to go down and rename it and I just want to be able to label it as the floral delay and that will take care of the name for the new level so I have this second layer checked here so I want go down to my clipboard again and now let's go down and find Florida Lay I think it's under er objects and people let's scroll down ok I didn't see it let's go back to the main part of the clip and just scroll down with the whole file there so I'm going to double click on that and that will bring the object to my work area now now when I double click it brings it right to the center and that's what I want but if you notice there's a lot of space around of this or and i want to be able to take as much of this disk space as i can so in the last video i grabbed the little handle and moved it and then i had to re-center it right one of the things you can do is hold down the toggle changes and then grab the little arm and move it out and you can keep it in the center and I think it would be nice now you can see how it will look like it's going a little higher and that's good because what I'm looking for now is to be able to have this around where it maximizes the space inside the plate so next I want to be able to continue rotate the height because right now this is taller than my flat plane and I can't have that so we're going to be able to change the height next so for adjust the height of this we're going to go back to the modeling tab and we're going to adjust the height so I can click this key again and what I need is to set the height of the shape and now it's displaying at .27.06 now to what I want to be able to do is change that because we know the depth of the chainring is .375 3 8 of an inch, I'm going to go ahead and set that to 375 and I'm going to select ok and you'll notice that it's still tall why is that? well the reason is the bottom of that plate is 3 8 of an inch so it just measures at that point and as we get to the edge it's a lot shallower and as we turn you can see how everything the center is flat and the only edge you see is on those two little ends that's what we're going to have to be able to address so let me go ahead and reestablish that now there really is a cou several ways to do this one of the things I could to do is simply reduce the size of the floor lag to the point where it is again below the surface but that would also give me a lot of room inside this deck the other option would be to be able to take and use a different deck that has steeper sides.
introducing more techniques to carve this fleur de lis
There's still another technique where I can mix this dish with the floral delay and have it reduce and that's what I want to be able to do and this is a little

more

involved process to do so we're going to walk you through step by step how to do it. now what I'd like to be able to show you is how much this sticks out on top So if I go back here to this little icon right here that says the z-height of the model scale and I want to be able to click on that now if we look at this we're going to see that the minimum z-height is a negative 0.3707 and the maximum z-height is a 0.1513 and that's the problem this is how much taller than me actually sticks out above that z-plane and that's the problem that's why you see this graphical representation here and same thing down here it actually sticks out 0.1513 of an inch too high and that's what we need to be able to fix now if this was actually sitting all the way inside the platter the z max would actually be reading zero and obviously that's not the case here so you see it here with the numbers and you see it here with the graphical representation now if I didn't check that and I was actually going to be able to carve this this would not look like this it would be a flat area and that would not look good we would lose all the effect of having this florida lee because you certainly wouldn't want it to carve out and make it flat so it's very important to be able to check this out make sure it's fully flush in the dish what we're going to do now is go through a different technique and what will happen is i want to be able to mold this floridaly where it will blend in with the edges of this plate and give me the look that i want and it will lower the height of the

fleur

de lis so it will be below the surface now to start this process what What I want to be able to do is explain one thing when we're doing these designs we're actually building from the bottom up and when we're building from the bottom up you have the plate that was created and then the florida reads is added and that was added to this particular project and what we need to be able to do is take this and bring it down before it goes in here so it's actually two components that we can work with now that I just dragged the plate level and place it on top of my floor, my second layer and now that I've done that, notice this is green, the green actually indicates that it's under the original layer and I need to be able to work with these two layers on the plate and this lead floor before t Hey merge now what I'm going to do is create a new level here so I'm going to right click on this and we're going to insert a new level into this level.
introducing more techniques to carve this fleur de lis
I'm going to right click again. I'm going to rename it and I'm going to type merge because that's what we're actually doing. We're merging the floor delay onto the platter so now what I want to be able to do is select the two files that are on the platter and I'll hold shift and select both then type um click the mouse and hit duplicate now then with those two selected I'm going to grab and drag them right into the merge file so now I have the exact copy here and I have those items in the merge file now the next thing I want to do since this merge file is identical to this and the combination The file is what we are going to change.
I want to turn off the dish and I also want to turn off the

fleur

de lis file and the only thing I want to work on. is this right here and what I'm going to do is just maximize this at this point now I have the dome highlighted and what I want to be able to do is take this dome shape and I want to be able to do it for now change the height to one inch and I want to be able to make this positive so it's where it's going to rise above let me zoom in on that so you can see that now anything that's going to be in what is the floral delay will be set the same way and have the maximum height there and then it's it will reduce to those edges so I'm going to reset that now the next step we have to be able to do is right click on the blend select the blend mode and we want to multiply so what I've done now is right after After I did this multiplication I went ahead and just selected the floral delay and it goes on and shows that here now it shows really a very subtle change and that's all we need to happen at this point now to you have it where the two blend together and the way you can see this very subtle change if you look at this top area and if I turn off blending you can see that slight difference and then turn it back on you cansee that change on this top and this border around so you know by doing that that this process has worked now at this point because we know this has worked if I go ahead now and select the platter now everything should fit there and we're going to rotate that and take a look and now you see there's nothing proud of my z-height so that's a great great way to be able to make that just a little more complicated so now what I want to do is go back to the 2d and split them , now it looks like this is gone but what happened is when I created this combination of these two it created another z plane which is actually covering this what I can actually do is click on that right click and then I can move this layer to my zero plane and now you can see that optic is back where it should be now also notice that the floral delay isn't showing so what's happening is this oval is now in front of the floral delay, a yeah all i need to be able to do is right click on that and then i can move this back and when i move it back and then click out of it now you can see the extra track come back into position now as soon as to be able to select that now you can see very clearly that you have a grayscale of my objects and you can see here what it looks like in a 3d view now what I would like to be able to do is put a vector around the outside of this and then I want to extend another because i wish i could put in mardi gras for 2020 now what i can do to be able to get my vector around this outer edge is go ahead and select the draw eclipse and i want to use my anchor point right there in the center for my x y y 0 .width is going to be the six and a half inches 6.5 and this was 8.5 and then I can go ahead and create that and that gives me that line there and then I can close that and I can highlight that there you can see that even line to that vector is in place and then what I can do is create another vector, I can only do this with the offset and I want to be able to go out and I'd like to be able to go out an inch so I can create that offset and there it is and I can close it, so now i have room to be able to put the text here which i want to be able to do now i know its now an inch so i want to go ahead and set the text and i want to write in modigra and i also want to write in 2020 and as for the size of the text, I want to be able to have that in .75 of an inch and as for the type um, just start with Times Roman and let's go with that.
Now I want to split this into two components because I'd like to be able to put a monogram here and I'd like to be able to or put the 2020 on this end so what I'm going to do is right click on that and then I want to split this text into the block on lines so now I have this as a line I can slide it in here and I can take my 2020 and we'll just slide it down here for now now what I'd like to be able to do is have this text wrapped in this space and the same I'd like to be able to do at the bottom have the text hover around this area and let's select that there we go I'll use that and now I can highlight this click on that and I can cut the vector I can go to this right click on that and I can cut that vector and now essentially I have two different vectors I can come up and highlight this one and you can see that it's highlighted now and this one is off I can still go in and highlight this one and you can see now I have two vectors it's different what I can do next is highlight this one and then I'm going to hold shift down and select both and then I can put the text there now it's right on the line right now so what I can do is being able to go ahead and set the offset distance now I know this was three quarters of an inch so I can split the difference and put my offset at point one two five and that will be one eighth of an inch up and one eighth of an inch down and then I'm going to go down and do the same thing at the bottom I'm going to highlight this and then hold shift highlight my numbers and then I'm going to do the same thing now you can see now that this is over at the top and what I want to be able to do is select this under the curve and then i'm going to do the same with the offset at 0.125 and that should solve it we'll close it and now that looks great now if i want to change the spacing of this what i need so what you can do is go ahead and come here to this icon here edit the space on the curves let's select t yours and then I can hold shift and then I can click the mouse and I can extend them and I think it'll be better to do it and I can do this with any of them and get that spacing where it's just going to look a little better and space out the letters and let's see I think one more here that looks pretty cool I'm going to get one more there and it looks great and if i would like to subtract it and make it smaller release the change and click the mouse and it will reduce that space so there we go i think it looks good the 2020 at the bottom i actually like it so let's leave that just so now we have the project fully finished and what I want to be able to do now is go ahead and set up the toolpaths now in this particular case because we're doing this type of dish I don't want it to scale down so I'm going to leave this at zero and I can use this slider to move it all the way up to make sure it's zero or I can write zero always Everything else is going to be fine so now I'm going to go ahead and set the tool paths and this one first because we're actually doing it so shallow I don't need to do a roughing pass so what I'm going to do is select the finish pass and I'm going to select it where it will be on this selected vector now I have to select a vector here but I also have two vectors so I need to combine those vectors again, so what am I going to do? to do is highlight both so i'll hold shift and select this second one and then i can hit j on the keyboard and those are the union vectors so all i need to be able to do is just select n have one and unite them and now which joins these vectors together and I can highlight that and now you can see this solid line again I could have used this icon here as well and it would have worked the same way so now let's go back and redo the toolpaths now just to double check everything which I have selected. ted I have this set for nine percent at 80 inches per minute so okay I have the cap selected with no offset so that will be important because all I want to be able to carve is just in this area that we're at. doing this with the scraper and we're going to set this up now i want to change the name to a floral delete and then we'll compute that and now that we're in the preview toolpath i can go ahead and hit preview and this is what it will look like, I think it's going to be great now then we'll close this window and the next thing I'm going to do is select my text I'm going to hold down Shift and get that and we're going to select vcarve now so I can set the vcarve toolpath.
I went ahead and got the words highlighted and now I'm going to go here and my starting depth is going to be at zero I don't want a flat depth so it's going to go off and I'm going to use a 90 degree V bit and then I'm just going to go g to go ahead and calculate this and now you can see exactly what it's going to look like and let's preview now one of the things I just caught or should I say my wife caught this this is 2020. I moved to 2021. So I need to go back and close this and we need to go back to the drawing tab and we need to change the text and we need to change this to 2021 and then we'll hit ok and you see that it updated exactly the way it needed to be so even though this was a mistake that was a good mistake to make so you can see how easy it is to be able to edit it now with that done and still the spacing is OK let's go back to the tool path and we're going to do the V carving.
We're still going to have this in 0 without a flat depth of 90 degrees in V and we're going to come down here. and calculate this again wow I have to select it so let's select the monograph hold shift select 2021 and then we'll calculate that and that CA Tuually looks great so it has everything now I need to reset this so it will deal with me and then we're going to preview again and now it looks like it should so this particular one here I want to delete and now I just have the right one in position now I want to go back to 2d for a bit and I want to be able to deselect this one and I want to be able to select my exterior and for this we're going to go ahead and cut this and to cut this I'm going to go ahead and use a profile bit we're going to use the starting depth at zero we're going to cut all the way across the surface and this it's three quarter inch material I'm going to go down to 0.76 I'm going to use my eight inch mill to be able to do this I don't need to have 16 passes we're going to edit the passes and we're going to reduce e This is about 10 passes that will be enough and I will give you the okay sign.
Now I do want to separate this last pass and what I want to do is do a go. a little concession and we'll put about a .02 and what it'll do is it'll make a very clean path all the way in the last one reconsider this I'm going to pull the tabs out so there's no tabs and I'm going to use my glue method and ribbon so I can hold this down so let's recalculate this yeah it will get that warning it will cut completely and now if I look at this I want to preview all the toolpaths and that looks good now if I want to change something now it's a good time to change it if i want to put a beveled edge around here or any kind of edge this would be the time to go back and change it right after seeing this i decided to go back and change the font size.
I'm going to change this from three quarters of an inch to 0.625 and make it a little bit smaller so there's a little bit more white space underneath. so I can do that I'm just going to click on this icon click on my two spaces I'm going to get rid of that The edge that's highlighted is fine because they're both separate now I'm going to have to do them individually and since the mardi gras now it's highlighted I'm going to select this at 0.625 and close that one and then I'm going to take this down here I'm going to do the same thing I'm going to go up to the text and I'm going to put here the 0.625 and that'll take care of it now so I have to go ahead and look at the text on the line so i'm also going to highlight i'm going to see what happens i'm going to select i'm going to hold shift i'm going to select the text on the line and see what it does it moves it to the right like so that's not what I want so I'm going to close I'm going to go up here and edit undo the text on the line bring I'm going to go back to where I was and then I'm going to select my line and I'm going to do the same thing again I'm going to click right and I'm going to cut the vector I'm going to do the same in this side cut the vector yeah that's nice hold shift select that make my text on my line and then i'm going to change the offset to 0.2 of an inch and that looks a lot nicer and now let's do the same for the bottom so we'll close this go out of that mode totally I need to highlight my bottom of the text hold shift select that go back to my text on the curve and set this to 0.2 and that looks like a whole . much better and then at this point I want to go ahead and deselect those.
I'm going to highlight this one. Hold down the Shift key. Complete my other vector. Select this. Join them and now I can go back and recalculate everything it looks like. I think much better so I'll go back to the toolpath and the finish path didn't change huh car v however it didn't change anything here all I do is just hit calculate now I want to restart this and i want to preview all my toolpaths and that looks great i like that space in it is better i'm going to double click that to get rid of it i think it looks great let's carve this out , let's go ahead and save the toolpaths and we'll be ready to carve it now that I'm not showing the full setup at all with the cnc machine because I did that in the last video and this one is getting a little long so I'll try to cover all the steps but i'll make it as short as possible because of the link to this video now i'm using a universal g code sender which is the ugs so i can send this information or this g code to the computer and you can see how it's carving it looks really very b ok so now one of the things you can see is a little groove on the right side again and i found out what it was a little late but i figured out what was causing it.
One of the straps at my waist came loose a bit. bit and it's actually a bit taller so even though I've got everything glued and taped down I put a screw in it too but it was still a bit too tall and that's what's causing that but it still looks fantastic and just a bit of sandpaper is all it will take to be able to correct that now at this point just finishing the final pass and i think it looks great there is no flat spot on the floor lag looks fantastic so i am very pleased with the way it turned out total time to make the final pass one hour six minutes is not badfinished the step is complete i have changed bits i am putting a 60 degree bit and yes i did i went back and changed it in the program and recalculated it so now i am ready to load the next program and do the v carve because i know where my zero point x and all I need to do is make the z-probe and then I can start carving and I do it on the side where I have the original surface now from time to time my computer hits it where I hit the button once and it actually hits it twice after using a z probe and resetting the x y axis notice my z axis is actually over the work surface and that's how it should be because it was carved so now I'm ready to load the file let's start carving those letters I'm so glad I went back and switched to the 60 degree v bit because this looks absolutely fantastic.
The letters are sharp and look great. You should never be afraid of being able to make changes. All you need is to go back to the drawing tab and whatever section you need to make the change and then go back and recalculate the toolpaths no big deal I'm glad I've never settled on something just because I don't want to make a change it's not hard to do and the results pay for themselves now to do the v carving with the mardi gras and 2021 there it took almost four minutes now at this point i already changed the profile a bit so at this point all i have to do is go ahead and make the z pro ser again and we'll cut this project now the profile cut is cutting clockwise and will do it on every single pass until the last one i set it up to be able to reverse and go the opposite direction so it took six minutes and 20 seconds to get me to do the profile cut, not bad so this whole project didn't take that long to get to carve.
