Tonight's quilt is called a puzzle, but it's far from a puzzle first. I'm going to finish this. getting close too fast close enough is not good enough when it comes to puzzles wait one more second well that puzzle is gone we will focus on a much better puzzle tonight's quilt and this quilt will use a fabric called collage without limits and a thick fabric. quarter pack, which I love the thick corner packs because they are all nice and together for me, but this is actually the hardest part of quilting for me, sorting the fabrics. I have to take this pack and have light, medium, dark and dark whites, so I'll see how this goes.

I always feel like this is some kind of test. I'm going to fail like I don't know what it should be. It's actually something similar when you're sorting puzzle pieces right when you sit down with the family, you separate the flowers or the edges, you always have to worry about people taking the edges, although I think that's the easiest option, okay, I have three groups, but I need four, so I'm missing, I don't know. I guess this would be half dark, it's definitely half dark and where's the phone as a friend option when you need it?

I'm not sure if this is correct or not, but it seems fine to me. I'm going to start cutting, so cutting is very easy, I just have to cut a lot of strips and squares first. I'll cut my highlights, then I'll cut the light mids and the nice thing is if you can stack them on top of each other, you can get through a lot of them. faster, which is great, just make sure you're paying attention to what you're doing, that's always helpful, especially at this time of night and then six thirty, which means I have to turn this around a little bit.

Popcorn can get you off track. at that point I'm going to cut the middle darks and then again just cut into strips and twist them and cut them more, okay, one more color left the darks and I'm almost done. I'm going to go ahead and finish cutting the rest. of these strips and this is a good time for you to go ahead and hit subscribe so you don't miss any future episodes. Now, with all of these beautiful fabric options, I can select the ones I want to use in each block, so I know I need two large squares of the lighter one, two smaller ones, and I'm basically just picking colors.
I think they'll look good together. I'm trying not to think too much, although it turns out I'm a little OCD when it comes to this guy. of things, I just want to select this and do it now, this will form a nice block and I already have three other groups together. The nice thing about this is that I can organize all my blocks and then put them away and take them out. Take them out one at a time and work on it a little bit here and a little bit there, but I'm not going to do that because I want to make this quilt tonight and what I'm going to do to keep them from getting disorganized is use them.
My very handy quilt block organizer bags, a copyrighted product that I love, are something I can't work without and here you can see that they have a transparency that you can see through them. I'm going to paste it here and that will help me make sure that none of these blocks get disorganized and mixed together and as a bonus, it protects against freezer burn. If you want to put leftovers in it, I have my blocks perfectly organized. I'll select the first one in my handy bag organizer and let's start putting this together because what's the best way to put a puzzle together, one block at a time?
I love mom jokes so I have all my pieces on the back of two of these squares. I'm going to draw a line because I'm going to do that stitch and flip method that is so helpful when it comes to piecing and then I'm going to use two of my large squares. What I like about this is that I'm doing two at a time. a while, so it makes me feel very productive. I'll put it there and sew on that line, trim it and flip it and then repeat, rinse and repeat. We'll do the same thing on the next strand so that there is my block now I'm just going to trim it, press it carefully so as not to stretch it and then I have the first part of my block.
I suppose I could use a rotary cutter for this, but I feel like scissors are much faster, so that's a good thing. sew and flip what I say myself to the next, you're going to get these little strips like the frame, it's like the border piece on both of them and what I'm going to do is I'm going to sew and then we have the block. now there are two gorgeous blocks and they will actually be the corner frames of the finished block, which means I have to take out those other pieces and continue, so I have two light colored squares, two dark colored squares and then I go to place the others around it, that's the design of the block and now it's time to put my magic and sew it, they are ready, I already have the other pieces of my puzzle ready, now I have to fix them and just because my last experience with the puzzle no It's not going so well I bet this one will go much better so I know I have my corners and then an easy reminder is that this will still be in the same corner now this may seem right because they fit together but in reality it is So.
No, I changed them, here we go and what it does creates that cool secondary illusion where it looks like the fabric is twisted and spinning. I love it, so it's time to sew it. I'll be honest, there's a little bit that I gained. It's not a complicated scene, but it's something to consider and it's where these corners come together here. I'll show you how it's actually not that difficult when I put the fabric together and remove it. In fact, I'm going to want that little dot extends about a quarter of an inch beyond other pieces and that will help me make sure that I end up with something perfect, but you know if it doesn't, that's fine, but you know it's a big problem if I'm actually using it. a pin, so I'm going to pin this in place and why not, since I'm already using pins, I might as well make more and then sew it with that quarter inch seam, repeat with the next C oh heck, that's good, so then we went in. the night, but where are my pieces?
But I'll take that one any day no, not too bad now one last scene for this block, that's a block that doesn't faze Monique Dillard, who designed this quilt, it's a great moment for on the next block, so I took my little bag of fabric, which, by the way, is very awkward when you're trying to explain to the police officer stopping you what I'm not sure, he completely believed me, but he must not have been a quilter. well I guess it only works on quilt walks and you were wondering how I can make an entire quilt in one night.
It's my magic power. Pity. Does it work on clothes or plates or even placing the rose? I guess I have to do it. Do this normal style so that the first row only has four blocks, but it is a puzzle quilt after all so I have to be really sure that all the pieces are going in the right direction, so what I'm looking for is to be sure that these areas are lining up and that's really where that cool optical illusion comes in where it looks like it's twisting and weaving in and out now let's sew right one more row to go first another piece to do a job a job I started with my kids I walked in here I can't believe it I have no idea okay let's sew this together now unlike a real puzzle.
I can quilt this baby and can't wait. I'm going to use my backup. I found this collage backing. Turn it into a quilt sandwich. and get to the best part, but I'm sure you're wondering what color thread I'm going to use. I know maybe you weren't wondering, but I'm sure I have to decide which thread before I can start now. I'm going to use quilting designs that will really bring out that twisted illusion of the block, but since they will take a little more time, I want to use the same thread color throughout the quilt, so I'm going to go with my light yellow thread.
You know, it's one of my favorites, sure it will show up a little on dark fabrics, but to me that's just a bonus and the rest of the fabrics will blend in and look great. I'm going to make some wishbones. this quilt, so I better get started, so I'll start by echoing the sides of my corner that way, it kind of enhances it and separates it from the rest, then I'll travel along that seam so I can get to the next one . side and echo that and then echo both sides now, of course, this is a part that you can skip because it's not important, but I love how it separates and gives it a little more frame and then I'm going to Fill that area with the fuze.
You could use any filling, of course, but I like wishbone. It's nice and fast. Once I complete that section, I'll go directly to that lighter square by traveling along the edge. What can I do to help squash it or make it look nice and flat. I'm going to use a swirl and since the color of this yarn blends really well, it will help hide any imperfections now that I have a finished corner. keep going traveling this seam and get to my next corner and here I'm going to go ahead and fill in with some more swirls so I'm going to finish these four corners by doing the same thing by traveling echoing and setting the wishbones and then I'm going to tackle these turns here same.
This is actually the version of the quilting idea that I keep up all night, but I've put together some quilting diagrams that include this and an early shift option in case you're not. As crazy about machine quilting as I am, so be sure to download it and while you're at it, be sure to subscribe so you don't miss any of these quilting tips and tricks now that I have the corners of my puzzle pieces. When I'm done, I'm going to work on those little twisted bits or those areas of the blocks that look like they're

interlocking

and I'll do the same thing, which is add some echo and some wishbones, all good, so I finished quilting that twisted part, I don't know why, I just think the word twisted part sounds a little funny, so that's what we'll call it, so I finished that little twisted part by adding my echo and my wishbones, and that's how I finished. down here and what I really want to point out to all the machine quilters out there is that I'm not trying to do each section at the same time, what I'm going to do is jump between the different pieces, so when I'm done here I'm going to keep traveling and go straight to the next section, that makes it more efficient and allows me to get more done, especially when it's late at night.
Another thing I want to point out is that even though I have two different pieces of fabric here, they have the same print, so I'm treating it as one and that's the key to making this illusion happen, so I might be overthinking it. on it, but again, I'm easily amused and it works for me, so I'm I'm going to finish this, I'll do the squares and the twisted parts and I'll show you what it's going to look like when it's all done and this puzzle quilt is finished and I'm super proud of myself because it actually has all the pieces.
It's a very easy pattern but it looks much more difficult and I love how I was able to use the quilting to enhance those twisted parts or that optical illusion of them intertwining with each other, so thank you so much for joining me tonight. Make sure to subscribe so you don't miss any future episodes because you never know what's going to happen on the midnight show. I wish I hadn't thrown away that puzzle.
