Jun 05, 2021
Hey guys Matt Allen, welcome back to Tactic Bassin, today we're heading back underground. Let's go

fish

ing

underwater

and see how

fish

interact and what causes them to hit different

lures

. Let's see how they interact. with swim baits with jigs with jiggle baits and even an

underwater

perspective of how they interact with the top water, come on, Tim did a great underwater video the other day, there were a bunch of different worms rigged in different ways with

bass

interacting with them and it had been a few months since we did an underwater video, that video just made my wheels spin, as I'm sure it made yours spin, so I've been digging into underwater

footage

watching

bass

interactions with all sorts of different baits since then.

And it really made me think because I talk a lot about reaction, even in the winter, how to draw a reaction attack, so I started watching clips and watching those reaction attacks and today I have a bunch of images for you to use. I want to see how fish act when they're on, so here are just a couple clips of bass that don't need to react. These fish were already amplified. This is a fish eating a whopper plopper. This is a fish. reacting to a waiver that does nothing, you talk about the drawing power of a swimbait, there is only a swimbait in the water column and a huge bass just mauls it and finally a smallmouth that just runs by a jig when these fish are aggressive. nothing's going to stop them now those three fish were excited there's no way around it those are the fish we expect to run into every time we're in the water if you've seen us throwing a whopper plopper if you've never thrown a whopper plopper you just saw us a seven pound fish excited to hunt a whopper popper, if that doesn't excite you in the dead of winter, what are we going to talk about now all the time about the power of slide baits, the power of swimming baits because of their size they have drawing power , that's a shining example: There's a swim bait that sinks into the water column with treble hooks dangling from it, but it's such a big meal that that five or six pound fish couldn't reject it and had to eat it.

It's amazing what the power of attraction does and then that smallmouth, I mean that was just the smallmouth right when they're mad, they're mad just carrying that jig now let's change the subject because those are the fish we expect to run into. . but that's not always the case, a lot of times it takes that reaction to trigger a feeding response, so here we're shifting gears, we'll look at some jig pictures and then we'll look at some top water because it's a little fun. of slide bait and then we'll end up with a jerk bait, let's jump on it now, this guy right here, I remember this video like it was yesterday, this is a five pound fish and this fish was just being lazy, sitting around until a jig got this. fish to activate it, it was all about jumping the jig, you see how fast he did it, that sucked in that jig, he blew it back in, watch the slow motion of this again, it's all about jumping with this fish, it's triggering that response of feeding, you have their attention. but he lets it go until it jumps, boy, he thought that thing was real, he realized you've never seen a fish spit bait like that now, this guy here, this is a big fish, this fish probably high fives and he's skinny, this fish could have been six or seven pounds, so if you saw that, he just walked up to that jig and just grabbed it by the tails, he wasn't very interested in that, he wasn't interested enough to try it. but that was it, but same thing shifts gears, jumps that jig, different different reaction, totally sucks it in on the jump, that's why we're always talking about working those jigs aggressively now it doesn't just apply to jigs , this is a rover this is a surface bait man that happened fast it's a walking on the surface of the water and something about walking on the surface of the water those fish just took off a perfect head shot of that bait and then it came loose oh it's brutal this is a different clip this is a different fish have the same reaction, although by the way we'll link all of these baits in the video description, everything you're seeing because obviously you can't tell what they are in this, but we will link the exact base for you, the colors and all the same, although the headshot was perfect, none of those fish ate the back of the bait, they hit it right on the head now, this is a big fail, these fish are together to school man, that schooling mentality is when those reactions go crazy, these fish play with each other when one is interested in seeing that head turn the other says no you're not going to take that away from me and he's on it now in the next clip, I put this one here just because it's my favorite clip of all time. this is pure bass aggression what's coming is a popper, okay, and when this fish eats this popper, a bigger fish just ambushes him, that bigger fish isn't trying to get the bait, he's not trying to eat, it's a pure headbutt, watch this in slow motion. he just took that smaller fish and threw it in the air because he beat him to the food, here it comes, did you see he just threw it out of the water?

Bass are ferocious creatures, now here we go, this is the exemption totally changing the subject talking. glide baits now we talk about drawing power and we talk about how we move these baits to get a reaction. Now the twitches are a little fun here because we're

fishing

in tight quarters for that camera, so it's not as natural as it would be outside. away from the camera but still these fish are on it now some of these clips you've seen before some of them are brand new this is one you've seen before if you remember our older underwater

footage

you'll recognize this fish interacting with this bait that's there, that's why we talk and talk and talk about changing the hooks, improving the hardware and then that happens, the first fish doesn't even get hooked on a spine, this one headshots this slider bait and it gets hooked because those hooks are sharp look at this it ends up with both hooks that's the difference when you upgrade your hardware you have sharp hooks you have the right hooks big difference now here we shift gears to baits some of my favorite images of all the times are watching these fish slaughter the idiot right on the tick twitch and he loses it same thing twitch twitch pause let the bait hang there twitch again it's brutal they just can't resist that again it's attracting that feeding response it's causing a reaction watch it go up slow twitch and it's over You can do this with Jerkbaits You can do this with Crankbaits You can do this with A-rings Glide Baits Did you see that happen fast?

There was a final contraction there when that fish fully committed Look at it just before the attack, that's a the jackal reorganizes I recognize that in an instant he comes and then I look at that final contraction, brutal man, it's fun to see this, well, what? what did you think? Were there any takeaways for you? Is there anything you can apply to your

fishing

? um, I am. fascinated by how those fish just turn on, you know they're sitting there, doing almost nothing and then you see them activate and then it goes full throttle and so many times they come that they've already decided they're really interested, but it's that last movement of the bait , it's that last turn of a top water, it's that last jump of the jig where those fish just say it's time to go and they smash that thing, their aggression when they shoot when they go to feed is just amazing, I mean I think about that fish that hit the other fish from below, was not behind the bait, that bait was already eaten and gone, it was aiming with its mouth closed, no attempt to eat, just pure aggression straight to the belly. of the bass that got ahead of you on the food when these fish are on, they're on and you want to take that and apply it to your fishing, you can slowly drag a jig all day long and you'll catch fish, you can spin a crank steadily.
Move the bait and you'll catch fish, you can slow roll glide baits on the surface, but if you stop, think about it and start adding changes to your cadence, start moving and stopping that top water, start popping that jig, you start moving a slide bait when those fish come for that thing when it's time to eat it's no longer uh oh maybe eat that's a total massacre on your bait and those are the strikes that I'm looking for I want those fish that are committed that just smash that bait and it doesn't matter when you're triggering that feeding response, it doesn't matter if the water is 85 degrees or 45 degrees, those fish will explode on that lure, those are the bites I'm always looking for because that's that food that shakes the bones that's that fish that doesn't miss right when they hit that thing they mean business and that's what I'm hoping to catch trying to get one of those big bass to trip and strike so here we are.
I'm still in the middle of winter watching upper water clips, but I wanted you guys to get inspired. I was very excited by Tim's video. I started watching that footage again. I hope you did too, but remember next time you're in the water, how different those fish are. the interactions are when the bait is aggressive when it moves and when they just turn and ambush it try applying that to your fishing and I think late winter and spring will be a lot more fun for you if you enjoyed the video please like it. button subscribe to the channel and we will talk to you soon
