This is the 2000 accident that sent Jeff Bodean to Halifax hospital in intensive care. He still has photos of that accident. I heard a noise, I never opened my eyes, I never spoke, but I heard a noise and I remember saying, okay, where am I? Daytona Truck Race. My jar of pesto. report

ing live in Daytona Beach Mike Springer channel 9 Eyewitness News and now I'm joined live by Blair Miller, our Eyewitness News correspondent in Washington and Blair that we wanted. to tell you this important story because a few years ago you worked in Charlotte, where NASCAR is based, and during that time you got to know Ryan Newman and his family quite well, Blair, I know you've been in touch with the family. share with us share with people here in Central Florida what you may not know about Ryan Newman yeah, Martha was thinking about this a little bit today.
I've known Ryan and Chrissy, his wife, for about 15 years. I met him on some stories there in Charlotte. We share a love for helping animals. You know, Ryan is down to earth and when he's not racing cars, he's doing his job. He likes being on his farm in North Carolina, north of Charlotte. He has that dry sense of humor that makes people I can't always see on TV that they have two little girls, like you all have been talking about, and Ryan just loves those girls, our kids are about the same age and when we put them together , you see how much he loves them.
As a father, you worked with Newman at the North Carolina foundation helping animals. We know this is something that is really a big part of Ryan and his family. Can you talk a little about the foundation? Yes, it is very important for both Ryan and Chrissy before. They built those facilities a few years ago. They would help animal rescue groups across the country. At one point they thought they could really have a bigger impact by building something where they could teach all walks of life about how to treat animals and they really have. grown into something much more where kids now go and camp or organize to teach people things that have nothing to do with racing, Ryan keeps up with maintenance, they're mowing the lawn, you'll find them doing that and Chrissie runs the shows and provides the direction they have always been so passionate about helping and to see them now needing help it is very difficult to watch a special last night some very tense moments Martha and Blair I know you heard the news but the good news here is he is awake talking to members of his family in the hospital, so if you talk to them, please give them the best and we have been praying for his recovery.
I won't talk to them even a little bit. Certainly, our in-

depth

coverage continues online. now, in the WFTV communicator on the right, you'll find clips from last night, what the president said about the accident, and comments from other NASCAR drivers. We'll have a lot more about the story throughout the rest.
