IKEA HACK | Craft Room Organization Cabinet

Today I have an amazing IKEA package for you or inside my office. now, that's inside my shed and if you want to know more about our process of building and finishing our shed, I'll link a playlist below and give you a complete makeover of the space that's now in my office here in it . shed I have a space that I want to make sure not only has storage, is very functional, but I also want counter space so I need some really great work services.

We were recently at IKEA and I saw a really stylish beautiful dresser system and I thought To me, this is one of those modular units that can work perfectly for what I want within my office and sure enough, all of these pieces are built to create any size or shape that I really need and I needed something that was going to be counter height and something really long so I was able to buy a combination of different things that they have in the system to create this counter space and what I really love about this drawer system is also that the drawers are really nice and cheerful. so I know I'll be able to store quite a bit inside them and they're on so they can go in and out very easily, they also have guards so they don't slam shut so there were so many great things about these pieces that I knew they would work perfectly in my office, so we probably spent about two hours and I'll share with you the different pieces that I put together to create this specific unit.

If you need something shorter, longer or taller, you can do that. with this system, but I will share with you what I actually used for my space and the unique thing about this system is that you can buy a flat base for it to sit on as well as a top so everything stays neatly stored. together, but obviously we built a complete shed, we didn't feel the need to buy these pieces, which were actually quite expensive, so by creating our own base, which I'm going to share with you today, as well as adding our own. Power Hunk, we're actually gaining a lot more height with it as well as larger counter space, and it's probably even cheaper to do it this way instead of buying those Ikea pieces and then we have a great custom built piece, so my plan today is to guide you through the entire process of building this custom built piece.

I'll also break down all the pieces we'll end up using for this, as well as the sizes, if you're interested in that. and then if at the end I also share with you some of the IKEA pieces that we're going to use inside those drawers to create a really organized space, then let's go ahead and start with an IKEA hat from Nordley, you're going to have to build these. drawer units, since you have to build most IKEA furniture, we bought eight units, which gives a total of 16 drawers because each unit has two drawers in total and, like I said, about two hours to build the eight units with Brian and me working together, we finished.

I started using six sets of smaller drawers and only two sets of larger drawers just because I really wanted everything to be really organized and I was worried that the larger drawers might have a black hole effect and things would get a little lost. easier on those but they are great for larger items as you can see this is the base of the unit we started with and the start of the setup, once all the drawers were built we were able to move on to the base which we use. two by four for this and we basically made a big rectangle by mitering the corners and screwing from the sides, you'll see on the back, we tilted the 2x4 up and that will then give us a space to attach it to the wall, we also added another one. cross piece in the center and that will hold the back of all the drawers and you can see we also have perpendicular support pieces and those are for each individual drawer to rest on the sides now of course this base was made to fit my setup , so you should make sure to measure to fit your setup before attaching it to the wall.

We also took into consideration the size of the countertop that would go on the back, so it will be placed away from the wall. here's a look at the base pieces added to our support beam. You can see the bottom will eventually have a piece of molding on it but I only raised the

cabinet

s about an inch and a half considering the width of the two by four and you can also see the space left behind the drawers and we did that on purpose so we could Add the wider counter space to the top of the unit when they are all in place.

We also made sure to screw our

cabinet

s together through the side so that although they would all become one unit, then we used some L brackets and wood screws to screw the base of the cabinets to that base piece and then we also took a last safety measure and we used subscriber lumber and attached them to the base piece where each of the cabinets were joined at the back so that way they would never be pushed back under the cabinet and twisted once all the drawers bottoms were secured and in place, we moved on to adding the second layer of drawers to the system and then added the countertop, so this is the Ikea egg back countertop and it was really affordable.

I was able to buy it while it was on sale, so we bought an 8 foot long section and had to cut it down. This wall is about 7 feet long, so Brian taped the edges together before taking the circular saw and cutting it to size. After cutting it, we took it to the office to make sure it fit properly before removing it again and then we added reinforcement pieces to the back of the wall and I leveled them with the height of the drawers that way the back of the countertop would have a precise and level fit once those back bracing pieces were in place we were able to install the countertop securely we used another combination of those L brackets attached to the drawers on the inside and then up through the bottom of the countertops, we got 3/4 inch wood screws to make sure the screws didn't go through the cabinets or the countertop and then all that was left What I needed to do was trim the joint between the wall and the countertop, so Brian likes to add a little bit of painter's tape to make sure we get a clean, crisp line and then he always removes the painter's tape before it dries completely and that's what gives this.

That nice clean integrated look, the only other thing we did was add a dash sheet to the end of the unit. You can still see that hole in the back, so we cover it with the board and then we have a little bit too. space on the left side that we actually left on purpose instead of covering up because it's the perfect size of a small cubby to hold one of my cutting mats. I'm so excited that this project really worked out. I love that I now have a large countertop. space as well as a ton of storage underneath, now I went ahead and put down some of the floorboards that will eventually go in here, we still have to add that, in addition to the moldings I also put down the carpet. so I can get an idea of ​​what it will look like in the end when we are completely done with my office.

I told you I would talk a little bit about the storage that I'm using inside those drawers, so let me show you that for the smaller drawers. I'm having a hard time finding things that specifically fit into them, these are more used as dressers so IKEA has some storage containers with softer sides that fit inside these, that's not what I wanted as a storage unit for

I knew I needed something. more plastic because I was going to have adhesives and things that could potentially leak that I wanted to contain. I was able to find these plastic containers at Ikea, they were in the bath

room

section, they actually have these two little openings and I don't see a name here, but I'll put the barcode in, so if you're looking for these ideas and have that reference, they are a little too big for these drawers so we had to do a little modification on just one to make them fit side by side inside the drawer and they were a little too wide so we cut an edge off of these and just placed it against the wall or the side of the drawer and then they overlap in the center with their little plastic lip that goes all the way around and then there is a little bit of space in the front or you can pull them up to the front of the drawer and have some extra space in the back part. but these definitely work great because I can still store small things in the front, bigger things in the back and if something spills and I know they won't damage the drawers now, for the larger drawers I found these big coated plastic containers rubber. are in their kitchen sections, these are more for kitchen drawers which fit so perfectly into the larger drawers of this unit that there is a side area so it doesn't stay the full length but fits perfectly front to back throughout My idea for the larger drawers was to be able to store some of my vital items for my Silhouette machine, so this is perfect to be able to slide those larger vinyl rolls in and then stick the smaller ones right next to them.

Now the other thing that I'm using in these drawers are these little plastic containers that you can find on warmer nights and find them at Dollar Tree and this is just another way that I've been able to keep everything organized in the larger drawers and Not only are they really affordable, but they also come in different sizes and shapes, so you can really set up something that works for you and your projects.
