I Bought 3 BROKEN PS5's - Let's Try to Fix Them!Aug 28, 2022
i paid 1351 for three
brokenps5s which is about 450 each so let's get
themtested to see if they really are
brokenand then see if we can figure out what's wrong to fix
them. this video is sponsored by ifixit more on those in a minute so number one ps5 definitely has an hdmi problem but i dont know if thats the only problem let's plug it in and see if it will boot up and see if we can figure out if there are any another problem this is the screw for the bracket and that's the hole it goes into this should screw in here but it really just pulls in and out so this hole is totally stripped let's take a look at that once we take this thing apart to troubleshoot the hdmi so the hdmi cable actually plugs right into the port so let's see if we get anything on the screen when we turn it on i can hear the fan the fan sounds a little funny but sometimes they do we have a blue light so far oh here we go I'm going to set this up and test it some more and see if I find anything else. its issues besides the hdmi port so other than the hdmi port i dont see any other issues with this ps5 it plays the disc it connects to wi-fi it connects to my psn and i dont see any other issues so lets go to get it. ripped and look at that hdmi port and also that screw hole for the bracket and we've got a pretty dirty fan here let's take care of it real quick better next we need to remove all 43 screws to hold this metal plate and with those 43 totally necessary screws removed we can remove this metal plate here we go and remove the clamp and as usual there is a dry spot on the apu from where the liquid metal doesn't seem to have gotten a good connection so let's get that fixed before we install this motherboard back on the ps5 but now let's focus on this hdmi port so we can see this inner plastic piece and the pins on the inside of the port mostly seem ok that's why it works when i plug it into the tv but this outer metal piece is fully bent let's take a look at the pins on the back and what we don't want to see is these pins have come loose from the board and luckily they aren't, but since this port is so crooked I'm going to replace it anyway. and i will start by removing this totally necessary piece of wire mesh on the back of the port then i will use my hot air soldering station to heat these pins on the port these mounting pins and then i will also heat the pins on the other side of the board they will allow this port to fall off without damaging anything on the board once i'm done i'll install this new hdmi port on the board and then we'll let it cool down and put it back together and test it so now what i'm going to to do is get some liquid gel that goes through first which is called flux which just helps the solder flow then i'm going to go in with my iron and solder on each of these pins individually and now i'm just going to go through and check each one of these pins with my pick by just putting a little bit of pressure on them make sure they don't move you can see each of these pins has a lot of solder on it's making a good connection with the board and nothing moves everything looks good so let's reinstall this board on the ps5 but first we need to address this liquid metal situation so this is where the heat sink pad is basically dry and then if we come here this is the part of the apu that matches the same part of the heatsink and you can see in my opinion it's also dry this is a major problem which means that this part of the apu basically isn't getting the cooling that you need so what I'm going to do is go through and put some more liquid metal in this area and seat insert it with the included q-tip and then do the same thing on the heat sink which actually might be enough I'm going to rub that pretty hard so the metal will stick. putting it right right there and then the same thing over here right better Now I don't know about you but it looks like the perfect amount of liquid metal to me so this metal plate here is what has that screw hole for the mounting base of this ps5 so i think i have another one of these. i'm going to get it so we can install it on this ps5 so we can connect the dock to the old board and to the new and just to make sure this board works and the threads are good there we go we're good to go now our ps5 is back on board this is what the hdmi port used to look like this is what it looks like now lets turn it on and see if it works ok there we go first i was kinda wondering but i had to unplug and plug the cable back in and then it worked fine plz what this ps5 works great.
Let's move on to ps5 number two, ok, and ps5 number two shows an image on the screen right away, so it's time to do some more testing. and see if we can figure out what's wrong also ps5 number two is very dirty it's a little hard to show you on the screen how dirty it is. I don't think they put it in a scrap pile just because it's dirty, but that's possible. Guess I still haven't been able to find anything wrong with the playstation 5. I plugged it online updated it logged into psn played it for quite some time and still can't find any problems it's really dirty so let's give it a good clean and then we're going to take remove the plates and look inside now the level of dirt on this doesn't show up very well on camera, but it's very dirty.
I'm going to use a little spray glass cleaner. I'll leave a link for this in the description if you want to pick something up for yourself I'm going to rub this as clean as possible and then I'll show you the paper towel when I'm done just so you can see how dirty it is oh that shows you how dirty it is let's get a little more here that already looks a lot better ok that side looks good this side is very dirty too and the same here just a very dirty console let's get these plates out and let's take a look inside oh wow so I wouldn't be surprised if this is the problem this one had, I'm surprised it didn't overheat. on us but I guess that's what was wrong with this one so what we need to do is remove this top middle piece here so we can look down at the heat sink really all I have to do is remove the fan for that come on remove the fan and look down at that heat sink and the fan of course is also gross let's take a look at the heat sink and yeah just as i thought the heat sink is almost clogged with hair, dirt and debris so unfortunately to get This console is completely clean.
I'm going to have to disassemble everything. We could get this stuff off the heatsink, but if there's that much on the heatsink, there's going to be a lot more on the rest of the console and probably even the power supply, so I think the best thing to do here is just take everything apart from that That way we can give it a really good clean and make sure whoever gets this next will have a nice clean ps5 that we don't have to worry about overheating so I'm going to start this cleaning process using this brush. You can get it at ifixit.com.
You have also seen me using this toolkit. I also got this from ifixit.com if you are looking for any sort of repair tools or guides. or even parts for devices, you can go to ifixit.com tronixfix and find all of that right there. I highly recommend their tools, they have a full lifetime warranty so if there are any issues with the tools just email them and let them know. we'll send you a new one free of charge, so if you need a repair guide for something you're trying to fix, if you need parts for the device you're trying to fix, or if you're looking for great tools, go to ifixit.com tronicstix I'll put a link right in the description so you can go check them out now. i'll use this brush to loosen the dirt then i'll use this little vacuum to vacuum it up now we can continue with the teardown and see how bad the motherboard and heat sink are and now we can see how bad the top of the motherboard is pretty bad look at all the hair stuck in here so this is one of the little heat sinks on this console and just cover it with this hair and dust.
I often have questions about whether vacuuming a motherboard like this or a console is good or bad many people have heard that vacuuming a console can build up static electricity and damage the board I have not found that to be true I don't think using any type of vacuum handheld like the one i am using really does cause any problem and i have never found it to cause a problem and i have used it for many consoles so i never worry about it and it has never caused me a problem leave a comment with your opinion in the comments and we can discuss it and now let's take a look at the board itself ok not too dirty here the motherboard isn't too dirty either now there are two things we can do here i could remove this clamp and take the motherboard out and then go down to the heatsink heat from there but another thing we can do is just take the screws off the bottom of the power supply and then just pull this whole piece out like a co ntogether and then we can get to the heat sink like that so let's start with doing that and then we'll take out the motherboard so we can check the liquid metal so let's get this top cover off now let's see how dirty it is down here oops , that's not what I was trying to do, okay, and here we are very dirty and very dirty, that's so gross, I'll do some more cleaning a little bit later. but we need to remove this screw and that screw which will allow us to remove the entire motherboard sandwich and heat sink and inspect the heat sink oh wow look at that so this is the exact reason I wanted to pull this out because the power supply down here too or it likes to breathe and with all this hair clogging it that makes it unable to breathe so with that airflow removed it will be able to go through the power supply to help cool it down and now let's take a look at the heat sinks.
I can see this one is almost totally clogged up these aren't that clogged up but they definitely need a good cleaning as well so I'm going to go in here with my clean brush all of that look so much hair and dirt and dust and debris in there so now i have a little more cleanup to do on this that i'll be doing off camera let's remove, remove this clamp and see what the liquid metal looks like and here we go ok no actually it's so bad that this liquid metal looks kind of have a dry spot right in the middle here, so we're going to fix that little problem. cleaning it actually looks really nice and clean under here so i'm not going to worry about actually doing anything to the board because it's already nice and clean.
I'm going to reinstall this and then I'll finish cleaning the rest of the console then we'll put it back together and test it and make sure everything still works and there we go playstation 5 number two it's working great let's go to number three let's see if it shows up on the screen and it turns on i have a blue light nothing on the screen so far come on oh here we go so this ps5 must have turned off by itself or i dont know something something happened to it its rebooting i think that's ok it's booting up your ps5 didn't shut down properly ok oh i had this ps5 boot up and now it just shut down with the three beeps which usually means it's overheating so let's take it apart and see what's going on yeah it's real it's uncomfortably hot up here so let's see what's going on in here and we got a lot of dirt in here maybe another one that's really dirty inside come on figure it out ok it's not that bad i'm not sure that this venti lador oh wait a sec let's see if anyone has pulled it apart before it looks like maybe oh yeah look at this that will definitely cause it so the fan connector is just ripped off the board which means the fan is not working so we're going to take it apart far enough to get to this connector and see what the damage looks like on the board ok and here we go that's what we need to fix , that's still hot. it's very hot still, we also need to do some cleaning on this one.
I see that it is not as bad as the previous one. Let's zoom in here so you can see what we need to do so we need to remove this connector from the fan here we go this connector needs to sit here like this everything is so hot on this thing so what I'm going to do is create a pad here a pad here so that we can connect the mounting pins for this connector and we also need to run a wire from here to here so that we can connect this pin on the co Connect to this point this pad on the board which will come back here like so that i'm going to polish up part of the board where i can make new mounting pins for this connector and then i need to run a trace wire from the motherboard to the pin on the connector that has been stripped off and then i just need to solder all the pins and the mounting pins down and then we should beready to go so now you can see this port is soldered nice and solid we've got all these pins soldered so let's reinstall this fan and reboot it and see if the fan works now will the fan connector plug into the connector of the plate?
It's ok it looks good it's nice and solid so I have the fan attached to the ps5. ps5 plugged into outlet let's turn it on and see if this fan spins yeah there we go that's what I'm talking about so this ps5 is fixed we were able to fix three of the three broken ps5 we were here today Thanks again to ifixit for sponsoring this video. If you want to see me try to fix a ps5 that two other repair shops tried to fix and couldn't. I'll put a link to that video on your screen now. so you can come hang out with me and see if I can fix that.
Thank you very much for looking today and I hope you have a good time.
