How to Transfer Letters onto Wood ~ DIY Letter Transfer ~ Sign Tutorial

May 30, 2021
Hey guys welcome to my channel so today I'm going to show you how to make a

sign

or add quotes or words to something without using a silhouette cameo and for years and years I did this of course I would never go back to these methods since having the The Cameo saves me a lot of time and I feel like I can do a better job with the Cameo, but it's totally possible. I sold a lot of

sign

s and made good money just using these methods here and I eventually saved up enough money to go and, you know, bought the Cameo, so I'm going to show you four different methods of how I've done this, you know, over the years. years.

I know there are many other good ways, not that I know the best one. ways or whatever, but this is the kind of job for me, but before I get into that, I'm curious if any of you who live in a cold area are as prepared for spring as I am. I have bad spring fever and of course this week. It's that first day of spring that I'm always so excited for that I realize there will still be some cold weather here in Ohio, but I love March and those first signs of spring. I'm waiting for Phoebe to arrive from the east. any day and I can't wait to hear her sing and then of course at night we have the spring peepers and sometimes we hear a

wood

cock by the stream, oh you know, signs of spring, we have

wood

ducks on the pond.

I just can. Don't expect those things, so let me know in the comments below what you expect and what your first signs of spring are in your area. I want to show you outside so you can hear the birds singing. I always think that's the first sign of spring, that's when they sing the most, but a little bit differently, you hear the woodpeckers drumming, so without further ado, let's get to it, so the first method I'll show you here is probably the easiest: just use templates. It's pretty self explanatory so the paint I'm going to use is chalk paint which kills something I had on hand here.

Burnt poppy seed is the color and you can brush it on or I always like to use these little things from Walmart sponsors so for In this technique I'm going to use foam

letter

s and I quickly made this pillowcase this morning using drop cloth and I'm planning on adding the word cabin here so I think I probably should have gotten

letter

ing from

letters

other than the sticker. type, but since that's all I have on hand, I'm going to go ahead and use them and of course I'm going to have to stick them on my box, which is kind of a support for my word.

I can't get all the letters. on that one, so I go ahead and do maybe three or four letters to start. I'm planning on sticking them here and then painting the other side here and using this as a stamp, this will probably make more sense as I go here so as you can see some of the letters are a little faded here, especially the ones in the middle, so I think what I can do is maybe just remove this and reapply my paint if I don't use the box. I'll have more control over where this letter ends up here, so honestly, I've never used a box before, but I thought it would be nice to have the whole word on a stamp, you know, but this will work too, you can always fill it in.
I finished the lettering as well using the brush and I think for this look it really looks good on a drop cloth if it's a little faded, so this technique is probably the one I use the most, is using carbon paper. I liked it because I could choose any thoughts I had about my computer, you know, to use in my design. Of course, there are different programs you can use to design something, but I always use Microsoft Office Word, which worked well for me. I have since installed it. an editor on my computer so I might be using it today so I ordered carbon paper on Amazon and it hasn't arrived yet so I'll use my old carbon paper that I've had for years hopefully it still works looks pretty you know , almost worn out here, but hey, we can get some black to

transfer

to my wood here and I'll link all of this under the carbon paper, some paint markers I'll use, so I usually lay out my words how I want and then stick them on with masking tape and the reason for this different color here is that I wanted this L to be bigger than the rest of the word, so I made one, you know, separately, it was just It's easier with that program to do that and it I printed with a light color because that's usually how I do it to save ink and I forgot about it when I printed my other stuff here, so what do I want to do?
Here I slide this carbon paper between the top paper here and my wood and I want to make sure I have the right side down. You can always test a small area with just your fingernail just to see if it is

transfer

ring to your surface. I have made entire posters like this without realizing that my carbon paper was turned the wrong way, so it's worth checking and you basically just trace the words with a pen or pencil, so the final method I give you I'll show you is the parchment paper method I've done it before in my videos, not that the focus was on that, but where I did a project where I use parchment paper for a client's image, our words for something, but I'll show you again what I have here is a little stool that I bought at a garage sale for five dollars.
It was just natural with wood finish. I painted it white. What I'm going to do is take a piece of parchment paper that's exactly the same size as a copy. eight and a half by eleven paper and I'll tape it to the copy paper to run it through my printer and the reason I do that is because I've had a bad experience just running the parchment paper through I used to do that all the time until one time it jammed and covered up my entire printer. I had a hard time getting it out, so for me it's worth taping it to something that you know, a little bit more rigid so that it will run, you know, more fluidly, so with this method you have to remember to invert your image or words .
I chose to use a French layout, so while I'm waiting for this layout here, I want to make sure I have everything ready, this ink. It will dry, you know, pretty quickly, so you'll just have to get to work. I always like to use the tip of a marker to rub this ink, you know, into my surface, so that's basic. What I'm doing here is, you know, transferring. the ink that's on the parchment paper here on my wooden seat. I hope you enjoyed this video and maybe you'll be inspired to make your own sign using one of these methods.
They know it takes some time but it's not that difficult to do. I'm sure you can do it too and as always, thank you very much for watching my videos. I really appreciate it and I'll see you in the next video, bye.
