Jun 04, 2021
Hi, where I am now it is about 30 degrees Celsius which is quite warm for me. I realized in these videos that I don't actually need to wear pants, so just shorts this week. Hi, I'm Kelsey from beabetterguide.com and welcome to an exciting no pants edition of our community Q&A, this is a shout out to Lynn Neil from the Chicago area, she leads

tour

s there and stopped by last week to ask about the

story

tell

ing and he actually shared some of his tips and how he uses

story

tell

ing on his

tour

s, and I thought this was a

great

opportunity to weigh in on how important story

telling

is to being a

great

guide, so the Stories are so important and central to the human experience before we write, we convey our most important knowledge through

stories

, great speakers, if you think of any great speakers.

They use

stories

to get their points across rather than just showing basic facts or things like this and many business schools, for example like Harvard and Johns Hopkins business schools, will use case studies, essentially narratives to help their lessons. be more sticky in this the way your business owner who is your protagonist goes through a struggle or challenges in the business world and then there is a resolution and a result and the students learn and extract the moral and the lessons of that story, so stories are extremely powerful and you definitely want to use them. them on your tour let's look at the four most important things you can do to tell better stories what is the message what is the most important information or message you want to convey to your group obviously you are choosing to share some information with the people on your tour , but what is the most important message?

Sometimes we think of this as a moral. It may be some ideas or a lesson that can be taken from it, maybe it's for humor, but whatever the main message is, it has to be very. of course because what is that kind of thing that will allow you to eliminate all the fat from your story? Anything that doesn't contribute to the main message can be eliminated and you can be a much more effective storyteller. Quick example. I was leading a tour in Frantz and we started our day at the top of the hill where Julius Caesar Julius Caesar defeated the united armies of the Gauls and this is a very important battle so obviously there's tons of data they could share about that battle, but the key message I wanted to convey. to convey were a few points, one of how important this battle was for the future of Europe, how the victory of the Romans was not certain, that was the type of tension that we take for granted now, but the victory was not certain and, Lastly, that the effects of that, the consequences of that battle resonated to this day, so those are the three big things that were my message.

Who is your audience? Every story

telling

exercise should start with who is in the group I'm telling the story to, because if I'm talking about a building, I'm going to tell a very different story to a group of children and people in the general public and maybe to a group of architects or something, you always want common reference points for your audience, they want to be able to relate to the protagonist in some way or relate to their struggle, so going back to my cycling example, it was a cycling trip in France , so I knew right away that they weren't history buffs, you know, this wasn't an archaeological tour or anything like that. like that, so I needed to keep the tour short and I chose to focus on Julius Caesar, someone most of the group had probably heard of and then I really focused on the human struggle between these two cultures and what Julius Caesar faced in that battle always . show, don't tell, so a great storyteller will use visual language and sensory language to really immerse people in the setting where the story takes place.

For example, again we are talking about the Gauls. I made them imagine that they were ascending. that camp on the top of the hill and they looked down through the fog and saw that Roman camp and the smell of the campfires and the costumes and that neighing of the horses and when you look down you saw the glow of the temper of the hooves. Romans, small details I like that this visual language sets the scene much better than a simple date or a description or saying "oh, I was on this" always use visual language as much as possible and practice, that's one of the most important things. important, honestly, you're going over your stories. or the facts and information you give on the tour try to figure out some characters, some tension, some plot and then practice telling those little stories over and over again until they feel comfortable, practice on your friends' video what works for you more comfortable, because storytelling is a big topic.
I want to show a few more things about the dos and don'ts of storytelling. Let's take a look, so don't overwhelm your story with unnecessary details. Don't make it too long. Don't tell a story without tension, without problems or without problems. challenge especially that people can relate to and don't forget to resolve that tension you want to make use dialogue whenever possible have a beginning, middle and end maintain eye contact with your audience always describe the scenario at least one sentence and incorporate pauses to pace your story, so let me know your best storytelling tips in the comments below, how do you tell great stories on tour?
