How to Prep and Build a Paver Patio with Curves and Border DIY Project

May 10, 2020
What's up guys? Welcome to the Colmar

project

and in this episode I'll show you step by step how I built this curved circular

patio

and we'll talk about how much to dig to get it up to par. your rating we will also talk about all the tools and materials and most importantly how to get the curve and lay the

paver

s so stick around and let's get this

project

started alright with any

patio

you want to go ahead and design. your design first in my case is a circle and then you want to start digging, there is a lot of digging involved so I hope you have a little buddy like me and Thor decided that he will supervise this project while I was digging my deliveries appeared which consists of 125 Brussels block

paver

s in small, medium and large sizes, three tons of ca6 driveway gravel which is also used for patios, half a ton of sand which will create the base for our pavers and will actually enclose us in this torpedo silo that It was a cool thing and some Pali metrics and that's what will really lock your pavers in place once you sign for delivery.

I went back to digging and let me tell you guys, digging 9 inches down and a 12 foot diameter circle is hard work. and not even Thor was impressed but I finished it and it was time to water it a little so the soil would start to compact and once it dried I started on the Tamplin and at this point guys I really wish I had rented a plate compactor. a floor and submission is not an easy job. I'll run a three-quarter inch duct across my circle and then measure it that way. I knew exactly how deep it was and how much gravel I needed to put in, then I found it on a couple of fillets and marked my fill line and then started putting all the gravel in, it was a lot of barrels of gravel.

Once I had enough gravel filled, about four inches of my circle, at least I thought it was four inches, I started rolling it out. with a shovel as even as I could because then comes the manipulation and more watering and while you water just enjoy a little bit of life have a drink and admire the landscape what is the first level of compact gravel I added a couple more wheel barrels until I got six inches of gravel and then checked the level and slope. I did this by putting a level in the conduit and checking that everything was okay before continuing, then watering it one last time and of course more fiddling action, this whole project.

It's all about manipulation, you're definitely going to work out after my well-deserved nap. I cut some 3/4 inch PVC pipe that actually has an outside diameter of one inch into four pieces that I placed about three feet apart inside my circle and then I threw a couple wheelbarrows of paper saying into my circle and I use the shovel to spread it out about an inch thick using the PVC pipe as a guide. If I dig too deep into this project, I realized that I forgot to comment out the perimeter of my circle, which I did. Using some string and a can of spray paint, this will allow me to have a good reference when laying the flexible PVC brick edging.

I bought mine from my local landscaping supplier, but you can buy it at any big box hardware store to make the PVC edging work. Folded into almost any shape you want, so the possibilities are endless. I'll leave a link to this and all the tools and supplies I use in this video in the description below. You can check it yourselves and it is secured with some spikes. They usually come with PVC edges or you can purchase them separately. I started using a level to spread the sand but with the holes for hands and it makes a little more sense to use a 2x4.
I use the back and forth motion to spread. the sand evenly in the circle and this technique works great every time. This isn't a difficult process guys, you just have to be aware of where the PVC pipe is placed so you don't dig deeper on one side than the other, but after a few you'll have a good time once you're level and gentle. I took out the PVC pipes one by one making sure not to remove them completely. You'll need them to complete the rest of the circle and then I filled them in. in the gaps left by the pipes with a little more sand using a masonry test to smooth and level everything once I was done it was finally time to start placing some papers and with this process you don't need any force or moving the papers.
Instead you just need to place them gently on the sand base, it will support the weight of the stones and even my weight which says a lot and with that it is just a repetitive process of spreading the sand, leveling it and laying more pavers until you reach to the

border

if you're making a

border

, but we'll get to that in a minute, but for now look at this 30 second time lapse that took me all day to get right, maybe it was 60 seconds, but in that time I was able to make it Honey Bunny would come out and start tracing the edge of the yard as I

prep

ared for the cut.
I'm using a regular Kreindler with a diamond plate for wet and dry masonry and no, it's not made of diamonds, just diamond dust particles. on the teeth of the plate that make it a little harder than stone. I don't recommend anyone use a grinder without a guard, but in my case I didn't have a guard that would cover a seven inch blade, so I just had to be very careful here at this point. I've been working in the yard for about three days and now I always say that for people a project is always easier than one and this was no exception honey and I got into the rhythm of cutting the pavers inside the edge and her tracking them and installing them and not even Thor could slow us down, just we had to work around him since he already called dibs on the yard and he wouldn't move.
I guess that's just a bulldog to you, yeah that's right buddy. Comfortable all you have overall just don't pee on it please since this is a circular design I needed to cut some

curves

in the pavers and the easiest way I found to do this is to just score the paver with the grinder roughly half an inch. three-quarters of an inch down and then turn it over and use a hammer to slowly tap the paver from one end of the cut to the other side until it breaks. Now the cutting will create a lot of dust and the best way to do it.
I found that cleaning it all up is to wait until the little guy comes out and then shake it all out, just be very careful because mama bear has a great left hook and an amazing punch. It's always surprising when the little ones come out and help us. In any project we have it's not about the help, it's about the time we spend together, whether it's working in the backyard or just watching a movie, there's nothing better than family because one day I know the girls will leave house and start their own lives and then who will help the door?
He sleeps like 22 hours a day, yeah, and that was the last job and working together he did this in about two hours, but we're not done yet, it's time to move on from the polymer sand. so you want to get into this amazing squat like Honey Bunny did and jump all over the yard, oh honey, it's funny, you're so cute. So after dumping it you will want to sweep the sand all over the yard, this will push the same. in the cracks beginning the process of blocking the cobblestones where is your son out of my period?
I thought, man, after Thor temporarily relinquished yard rights from him, we could start tampering by hand, and like I mentioned before, if you can rent the plate compactor, do it, so once, honey. -bunny finished manipulating and put a second time around polymer sand and we did this manipulation process again. You want to do this twice with a SAN manipulation. Sam manipulates so that all the joints of the pavers are filled and you don't have any voids and this is the last step in this construction, we place the patio down, which in turn activates the polymeric sand to join the pavers.
It's not like concrete or mortar, but more like rubber sand, if that makes any sense, but that's it guys. Oh, and Thor needed a bathroom, which he hates, so there you have it guys, our circular cobblestone patio is completely finished, it's 12 feet in diameter, which is perfect for setting up a portable fire pit and a couple of chairs for That at night we can invite some friends. and having a fire pit now the reason for the circle is because we are

build

ing a composite deck and we wanted to add a curved feature to the deck and that's how the circle for the patio came about and I think it looks great if you liked this video and want to see For more DIY projects like this, let me know in the comments section below and if you have any questions about this patio, how I made it, or why I did some of the things I did, go ahead and ask those questions. the comments section and I will respond as quickly as I can and if you are new to the channel I hope you will consider subscribing and hitting the bell notification, this helps this channel grow and allows me to post projects like this for you.
