Hello everyone, welcome to our channel

1134

Press. My name is Bree and today I'm going to show you how to

make

this

junk

journal

from a secondhand book. I'm always trying to find ways to be a greener scrapbooking broker and book

make

r. I thought this project would be a great example of how to show you a way to be more eco-friendly and also creative through your

journal

ing practices and without further ado, here's the tutorial, so we'll start by cutting out the text block. inside the book, if it's an older book like this, it will be very easy to just take a razor blade and cut from the inside of the spine and I really like to save the covers and the end pages so I can use it.

For other projects here I am using drawing paper to fold it into signatures and make the new block of text that we are going to put inside. Whenever I use a notepad or paper pad, I always save the cardboard that comes with it because you can use it. that to make another book, if you're buying a hardcover book, what's under the cover is called chipboard, so this is just free chipboard, so I have this handy dandy little bag that I like to have on my writing desk. crafts when I'm working is a place where I keep all my scrap paper so I can use it later to make handmade paper.

This is another great way to make sure you are recycling and making the most of your materials. This is an example of something made by hand. paper I made and some labels I cut out. I'll probably do a video on that another time, so for a

junk

journal what you'll want is a good mix of different papers, the papers I'm showing here are ones I rescued from some old

books

, some journals I didn't finish, I just cut the pages out to use at a later date and they are all folded in half to create signatures and when you are making a junk journal this is pretty tame as far as how junky it can be, you can also use envelopes to package anything that gets folded in the middle half and that you can sew in a signature.

Okay, I used about eight pages, yeah, it was eight pages that I used and I created five signatures. and you can clearly see that some of these pages are much larger than the book I'm going to sew them into, so after I line them all up the way I want, I'll cut them to the proper size. and when you cut your signatures you always want to leave a little space so they don't touch exactly at the end of the cover, as you will damage your pages faster than if you did. If you left it the way I like it, I think in this particular book I left about half a quarter of an inch on all sides, so what you need to do once you have all your signatures together is see if it will fit comfortably inside your book. , so once I make sure I have enough signatures to fill the spine, the next step is to punch holes in the folds.

I didn't record myself doing this process, which is kind of important for making the kettle stitch, so I'm going to link in the description to a really good video of someone making a kettle stitch, so once you have all the holes in the signatures, how many times am I going to say that now I am going to do it? to sew them together you have to go through the first hole and I like to use washi to keep it from slipping before you get to the part where we tie it and then you're just weaving the thread from the inside out until it reaches the end and once it reaches the final, now it's time to add the second signature and we're going to go into the hole that's right above the one we just came out in the first signature and then we're going to weave into the second hole or the hole closest to the one we just went into. go out.
We are going to connect the second signature with the first signature by entering the hole that is below it, so once we go through that hole in the first signature, we are going to close the gap and enter the one that is right next to it and when we come out of that first signature, we'll go back to the second one and then we'll finish linking these two signatures. going through that last hole and then tying it off and like I said this video is not a tutorial on how to make a Coptic stitch or how to make the Coptic stitch not a Coptic stitch on how to make the kettle stitch and again I'm I'm going to link a video better on how to describe that process in the description below, maybe one day I'll do an official binding video and plus you don't even have to do a kettle stitch binding, you really can do it with almost anyone as long as you're connecting the different signatures, this is just the one I decided to do right and then I add a healthy layer of glue to the spine to close any gaps that the thread didn't go into and then I place it under a stack of

books

or you can use a book

press

if you have one, so I have these two sheets of paper that I cut to size, I cut them to the size of the text block and you always want to fold the pretty side of the inside because we're going to glue these pages onto the text block that we just sewed, so we're going to put a sheet of paper under the first page, just in case if some glue leaks out, you don't want to damage it. the one underneath, you want to pay a lot of attention to make sure the edges are nice and tight and you don't need to over saturate it.
The modge podge is pretty strong, you don't want the paper to be too warped and then We're gluing our final page into our text block and I just put a new sheet in in case any glue came out while I was flattening it and you'll do the other side of the same way so you can notice it on the Inside the cover I glued an extra piece of fabric on the spine in the center just to reinforce it. This is a very old and worn book and I was worried that if I didn't add a piece of fabric inside it would be damaged. it falls apart, I used a piece of faux leather from another project, but you can literally use a jean t-shirt, any material you have that works well with glue, so the way the text block stays is with these end pages. so you're going to add a little bit of glue to the blank side and you're just going to line it up to cover the old paper and you're going to do the same thing on the other side.
I love junk journals because I feel like having different pages. unleashes my creativity, which sounds so ridiculous, but no, seriously, I really like having just a textured background to add dimension to a collage for the most part, no two pages are the same. I haven't decided what I'm going to do with this particular one. one, I have a lot of photos on my phone that I need to get off my phone, and putting them in the cloud or whatever would be best, but I'm thinking about printing them out and maybe having them in this journal. with a little blurb about what I was doing that day or just having the photos in this book so I can free up some digital space and if I haven't published this blog post on medium yet, you can find a link to our blog.
