HOW TO FIX SANDY SOIL FOR PLANTING A GARDEN | A Soil Scientists Opinion | Gardening in Canada

hello planned people, how are you doing today? If you're new here, my name is ashley and I'm a unique scientist on this channel. I like to take that side and apply it to anything related to plants and in today's video we're talking about it.

sandy

soil

and specifically the problems we ran into with

sandy

soil

because I feel like it's one of those soils that gets underestimated people always complain about clay watch the clay video if you want to know more about amending clay soils but people always give clay the bad wrapper but clay soil for the most part as long as you don't have a problem with the water table it's a fixable clay soil or sandy soil it's not very hard to fix a clay or sandy soil for several different reasons, but we will explain exactly how we can or cannot do it and how to know if we have a pure sand soil or if we have a mixture that we can work well with.

The problem with sandy soil are two things where we end up with large amounts of water loss because water quickly passes through the In the whole system we don't have a ton of capillary action so very little is suspended in the solution over a period of time so the water you get is the water you get what the plants can take up is what the plants can take up anything beyond that it just seems to fall a bit flat. The second problem with sandy soil is the inability to retain nutrients and this is due to something fancy called the cec cation exchange capacity and therefore standing soils have a very low cation exchange capacity because they have no that negative charge that the soil needs to be able to attract the positively charged nutrients that the plants need and so technically when we fertilize our plants we may not get much and groundwater or water can get a vast majority of it nutrients out of the system, so how do you know exactly how much sound you have in the system?

Well again it's a two part method similar to what we talked about in the clay video we're going to do the rubbing method on our palm and try to feel if we feel anything soapy or slippery that means we may have a bit of clay or slime in the system and then the second method will actually be the tape test again so let's see how much of a tape we can make if we can't make a tape at all then we have a gritty crap so we need to make amends ultimately with sandy soil. I highly recommend thinking about maybe doing a raised

or a dayless

where we are actually putting composting manure on top of the soil surface mainly because whatever we incorporate into the system because sand gets very hot whatever there is walked on a hot beach or desert hiked and felt the sand sand gets very hot compared to clay soil or black soil and because of that heat compost and manure and any water that gets add ends up resulting in a rapid amount of decomposition and so when we amend a sandy soil with just about anything organic it breaks down very quickly and wet builds up in the system and then seeps out again because most of the nutrients are also soluble in water, is the main reason that plants can absorb quite a few different types of nutrients, so we rec Looking for a raised bed or garden without digging up some of it, I have a ton of different videos on different kinds of concepts you can try so be sure to check them out.

It was to amend a sandy soil. The first thing I would do is mix in an inert nutrient. bio material so it could be peat coco coir vermiculite even something not bio but vermiculite anything that will bind or retain water so when you mix it into the soil you probably mix it in the first 15 inches from that system. I'm going to have to replenish this on a very regular basis, but what I would do after that is actually cover the system with about two inches or more depending on how gritty the higher grit content is. the more amount of mulch you have to put on top I would either mulch it or cover it with compost or manure and then mulch it because the main goal is going to be moisture retention and the only factor you can control because you can't control porosity in sand it is what it is and you can't control gravity because that's what it is unfortunately i wish i could control it i would if i could because you can't control that two factors the only factor you can control is something called evapotranspiration so we want reduce the rates of this and the best way to do that is through a top dressing and then mulching on top of that but like I said there's not much fix for sandy soil unfortunately there's a product on the market um it's mostly for Americans unfortunately I spoke to someone from your company I spoke to the soil specialist at your company and it's called cinderate and cinerite actually ity has the ability to inc Reduce the moisture holding capacity within the soil so that would be something I would be interested in trying in a sandy soil and you might contact your soil specialist for documents because they do a lot of different trials and tests at their company. so that would be something to look into another thing you could try with sandy soil is cover cropping and just trying to make a denser spawn net now spawn nets usually don't do miraculously well in sandy soil so you will have You have to really try to mitigate this or manage it as best you can, but a cover crop that fixes nitrogen or has a grass-like root system a web-like root system would actually be a great help with sandy soils for both Adding that soil so as to form conglomerates in the soil, which is very valuable for nutrients, the penetration of water in the same season, all those things that retain water in the system, but also the cover crop is going to prevent again against that ev apotranspiration that we're trying to reduce and it could fight against some gravity systems and it can also introduce some level of capillary action as well that something to think about with sandy soil unfortunately i dont have a great solution for you my solution is organics and nutritious organics mixed in the first 15 inches a top dressing of compost or manure anywhere from 15 or two inches to about five inches depending on how sandy the soil is the thicker the layer should be mulch then cover crop those are my solutions for sandy soil they are worse than clay soils you guys feel bad for sandy soil people they are so quiet they never say anything but they should feel bad for them um thanks so much guys to see if you enjoyed this video be sure to give it a thumbs up let me know in the comments below if you have a sandy, clay or loam soil what are they his problems with it and how he modified it i will talk to you guys next time bye
