How To Find And Hire The Best Movers For Your Moving CompanyFeb 20, 2020
Hey guys, how are you doing this? I'm Jay Burnham and I'm on the real Jay Burnham show. Today we are going to talk about how to
hiregood workers to help you run
movingbusiness or what other businesses you have now. you know a couple of caveats here, you know, um, this, I have a situation to
findgood guys who will stick around long enough to be, you know someone who will stick around. I've seen
movingcompanies that have
hired guys and the guys have been with them. them for years, then I've had guys who just won't stay with you, they change positions like they change underwear, so how do we get the guys who are going to be really super loyal, really super good versus the guys who are like their resume, their jobs read like a McDonald's menu, you know, we got it, they don't know where their belt is supposed to go when they wear clothes, they think their belt goes around their butt instead of around their waist, You know they think they are gangsters or thugs, but they have to be taken to work for their money, you know what I'm talking about anyway.
I once had a consultation with a guy who actually taught me something that Jay said when If you're going to find
yourguys to hire, you have to be very specific and define exactly what you're looking for and I thought that was really good advice and I I took it seriously and that's what I've done every time I post an ad. I have been very, very specific. However, like you, I didn't know there were other options and would only use Craigslist specifically to do my ads now and now Craigslist charges $15 2.0 for help. 1 on it, I don't use them anymore, but in today's tutorial, today's lesson, I'm going to go through the whole spectrum and all the things that I've done and implemented that have helped me find better and better people, okay?
First of all, let's remember that he was talking to you about how you had to define well. I didn't know what I really needed and wanted so what I did was I went to some of the websites like two men and a truck and other big moving companies and I found out what they wrote in their help wanted ads and usually , their help search ads are the same ones they have on their website when they go. I need this or that thing, so the first one I went to cried. Bennett, so I thought I'd walk you through the exact same steps that I did when I first started hiring people to give you a good idea, so here I am on my computer, I'm going to minimize it and then I'm going to minimize it, lower my sub into the corner like I'm right now, let's go with two guys in a truck and see what's going on here, okay, here's two guys in a truck for the Lansing area, they need a general labor driver.
It's a nice little website, okay, but then they have this job description, start your career, you know, like they say career, they didn't say job, they said career because I want the kids to stay, they want them to already be mentally trying. . To stimulate these guys, hey, this is something that can be long term, we want you to be here for a long time, so that's it, that word, career, is very, very vital in your ad and I think it's great point you should include there. So this is launching your career with two guys in the truck while we move and figure out growth opportunities towards a driver's office position or to move to another franchise, blah, blah, blah, you know, a small area on the ferry side, but hey, let's go. but then he comes here and says job responsibilities provided customer service while moving safely packs unpacks customer ties great customer great customer Prada I was at the specified location and completed a facility tour great to communicate professionally in English, both verbally and by written, interact comfortably with customer now some of these words are becoming a bit on the high interface of the site, they say speak culturally and talk to customers instead of using the interface, but I understand what they are trying to do, they are trying to do again what they are trying to do.
It is trying to get people that others can understand that communication is on the good side of life. You know these guys aren't. You know that the fifth graders dropped out of school. You know they have 60 moms. a little education, most likely they have finished high school and can read a little, so that's what's going on here. In particular, I want to say, let's move on. I don't necessarily agree, but I understand. what you are trying to do help the driver with truck inspections and an inventory of moving equipment share responsibility with the driver and accurately complete paperwork and collect payments, that's great, it's your job responsibilities because what He says now it's, let's wait You're as responsible as we keep the guy in charge, if they don't raise the right amount of money, guess what, you're just as guilty, if you lose the team, you're just as guilty and that's what he's doing , the strength he is showing. that we are forcing a responsibility but the people who understand that we are going to do well yes I am a responsible guy are thinking that mentally they are not being you know without being hey we are looking for responsible people you know our job requirements because moving is stressful we see candidates committed to customer service and they appreciate variety in their work and that's the key, you want someone who understands customer service.
I can't tell you how many times I fire guys. on the curve, then they say bad words and smoke cigarettes, talk on their cell phones with their boyfriends and their side guys and all that good stuff, you know, it's like that's not what you want, you want good quality guys. right, they have to have a high school diploma or equivalent again, we don't want high school dropouts, they try it with high school dropouts, our dropouts for a reason, you know, great customer service skills, you want someone who can communicate, he can be a little effervescent, you know he will be. fun and when something goes wrong you can talk to the client professional attitude and behavior in other words, look at professional experience in the fields of landscaping or warehouse construction in general.
Oh, in other words, they're used to being able to lift things. up move things drive you know objects not paper pushers write strong lines you can math skills them in other words you can add subtract divide multiply because they are going to ask you to do that you know you have to have to realize you know you worked on it you will have to be able to tell time so you have to be able to go well, you've been at work ten hours and then you have to be able to go ten times whatever the hourly rate goes up, let's say it's a hundred dollars, okay, always a thousand dollars, look how fast that path was, you know, and if anyone can add, you know simple basic math, we're not asking them to do algebra or calculus or trigonometry. you're asking for addition, multiplication, subtraction and division, just ah, they have to have the stamina, you have to be able to do 100 pounds or more while repeatedly climbing, balancing, kneeling, walking, etc., good eye coordination and just because you played overwatch or titanfall or whatever it is doesn't give you good hand-eye coordination.
You know, that's some dumb timing. We want someone who really has the skill and the balance. Someone like ninja warriors. They have good hand-eye coordination. One of the valid drivers. license and a good driving record at that time says what they offer moving companies started a resident driver starts at 13:15 moving companies and drivers have the opportunity to give advice which is good and then many trucks offer benefits if you don't Offer benefits, don't put those things there. um you know, you have them when you first start now and you don't have the volume that two guys in the truck have.
You can't offer benefits because you can't afford it. I don't think you can do it, however, if you can, please, you'll get some good guys that way. Okay, of course, they have to work with you, for example, you have to stipulate that you're not going to do it. make any kind of profit unless they work 90 days or more, okay, so anyway I don't know how a lot of trucks do it, but that's what they were doing, but let's get into it, let's say now you have an act, now you can go. to Craigslist and go to work, for example, go to general employment law and you can see here, oh, look at all these jobs that go blah, blah, blah, come here, say I want to publish, okay and then you can come here and I got a service offered you are going to go to labor transport movie click enter your email login then place your ad and then after ads finished you will have your photos in the post or that. you have, um, so you can, then they'll point to the credit card and they'll charge you $15 for your ad, that's awesome, very cool, um, and you'll get people to call you now, that's another thing when you ask. people to call you, are you going to ask them to call your offices or could you ask them to call your cell phone?
If your cell phone has your number, well, tonight you'll have to do it. I have my own office number. call the office, I don't want them to talk to me on my cell phone because I will receive these incessant calls that, literally, late at night, at eleven twelve at night, a note, are you a little higher up, um, yeah, that's why? we have an ad on craigslist um yeah hint the guy asked are you hiring? when he has to add, don't hire him, he is a movement, what is he doing?, someone, look, sir, start with, someone calls me and asks me if I have a yes.
I'm hired. I'm coming, yeah, I'll meet you at Home Depot, it's tomorrow morning at 8 o'clock and of course they'll never show up, so don't worry. I'll do something weird. I'll give you some. weird address and um go from there so that's Craigslist yeah you can do Craigslist and Craigslist will work if you want to do Craigslist do Craigslist um like Craigslist doesn't have a great reputation for getting good people um and that's what I have. What I learned to do is go to Indy, no, no, not at all. I've never actually used it in facts, but since we're here, let's take a look.
In fact, it allows you to publish. You can go up to. In fact, you would. go here, put pressure on employers, post a job and then I'll tell you your next tire is here, post your job, click on that, give them an email, put in a password, Krieger, come and then go, do that , what I have heard, ok, thank you. I just don't know what the place will be for all the general work, but I'm going to give it a try and see what it will do for me, so I'll let you know how it works for me.
In fact, I thought I'd put it out there to give you guys kind of an idea that you can access. In fact, just go to Indeed.com and you can go there, but this is what we want to talk about. talks about Facebook, so here's Facebook and if you go to this side of Facebook, you go down your list and you say explore and then it has the same thing called jobs, really jobs, you click on that and boom and you also post a job post. so we want to publish our work, oh, then one of the pages will appear and you can check your pages, go to your thing and I'm going to do this, this is what I'm going to do. to say pirene for drivers and moving companies, right, we're going to use our cover photo, which is this photo here. go and then an address appears, which is good.
In fact, I'm going to change that address to our new offices because if you notice in the back all the shelves are empty, that's because I had all my guys come in. packed today we will move to our new offices. I'm very excited, so on Monday we will arrive, bring our trucks ready, load them and move everything. to our new offices for better expansion. I'm going to have a bigger office that actually has windows to the outside. Yeah, I'm really excited anyway, so I'm going to put your address here. Look at 731 East Shiawassee Street, here we come. salary we're going to say let's put the lowest because of your drivers so we're going to go to ten an hour full time yeah and then this is where you can enter your job description and I actually made up one that Lo I've done, basically, I'm going to go under your dududududu and, whoa, do-do-do-do-do, sorry, that's for another
company, uh, so I'm going to go there and not paste it here okay, so I'm not looking for any of that, so get rid of that and then we'll go over here and change this.
Basically, I'm going to give you this jet that will be down in the description so you can use it. use this however you want adjust it for your
companyum well, so here we go, we have to tell you that moving moose is recruiting the
bestbecause we are motivated, responsible on time, hardworking, they care about their craft, they go the extra mile. to make sure everything is done right people done right so contact us this is URF you know make sure everything is done right individual so please contact me we will train you to know what you pay for .We offer advancement opportunities. happy and healthy work environments that could also get you in shape.
How true it is that we are a fast growing, quality oriented specialist moving company.focused on moving I forgot I wrote this for a different company that needed this so I had to redo it, sorry guys we are focused on moving and storage of household items. I forgot our home spell. I don't want to seem like a front. of all the idiots out there, well we're fast, we're cool, we're growing rapidly in quality or any specialty moving company focused on moving the swords of high school home goods, we need like-minded people to be on our team, good competitiveness pays a company. that appreciates getting paid while you are trained healthy outdoor living lifestyle opportunity for advancement real bad work no shortcuts we are committed to quality to both our people and our clients no shortcuts allowed qualifications remember again before you said that you have it you need to find one you must be 18 for a moving company and at least 21 to be a driver slash mover have a valid ID reliable transportation to and from work if your mom your girlfriend has to drive you you don't have reliable transportation they don't trust on me, I mean, if you had a ride to work, please don't have reliable transportation, good work history, in other words, if your resume has you with a different job every two or three months, your work history sucks and He doesn't want those people to know what happens if they abandon it and where to wear it and it's not around your butt no it's around your waist people pull up your pants you're not a thug or a gangster if you're a thug or a gangsta please look elsewhere high level of quality means you are responsible for ensuring everything is done right once, hot summer days, cold winter nights and everything in between, email us your resume and work experience and then put your email and save, but here's the problem with Facebook, guess what they reply to us and that's it. "It's going to be a free text question, why do you think you're a good candidate for no hot dog Fridays but save on moving and storage?
That's something new. I didn't know it was there, so I like it." and you can also ask additional questions and I didn't have anything I had to explore to receive apps by email so you would say you have storage on gmail.com okay so they updated it so here's their ad this is what that your ads are going to hire for drivers and moving companies and then they got a picture of your moving company and then you have this and then they need to point people and if that's what it's going to look like on the mobile newsfeed so when they're on your phone this is for desktop this is for your phone or tablet or whatever full time $10 an hour um what would include a valid email address that's valid, but I did?
Did I write something wrong? Maybe you don't like that, okay, okay, we'll get rid of that, here we go. They didn't like my email address for some reason. I think maybe they want it to go away. Who likes the blog. that you're moving company communications versus a Gmail or something, but okay, that's what seems fine, so basically what's going to happen now is I'm going to post this, once your post is approved work, it will appear on Facebook. within 24 hours, blah, blah, blah, and you can go and close well, so basically what's going to happen then is it's probably going to get approved very quickly and what's going to happen is we're going to go in and I'm actually going to go to the save moving stores page that I have here uh and you're going to see in the messengers um well no, they left ok here's a guy here's this guy Ajay timko and him and he comes when they apply, they're actually going to apply here in Facebook, which is awesome, so basically what's going to happen is when they apply here on Facebook, you'll actually be able to see their work experience, what they put on Facebook, like when your Facebook says, "I've had this job." I've had this job at this bar, so it gives you an idea of their resume, it gives them your resume.
I don't know things and then I have an automatic response but basically you can go back and look at his profile this is what I'm going to do I went to look at this guy's profile and I noticed his and stuff and he says I'm cut from a different cloth , okay, kind of like God bless the United States, we salute our travels from Flags Porter I like everything about how you looked for a job. I was schooled in the old school of hard knocks, which just means that he, yeah, it means he's a gang of thugs with Williamston, which is good, but immediately look what's going on here, um, he dodged the F for never. suck it up only someone can handle it in other words I am who I am you don't like it F ah fuck you I'm bad yeah you know uh you go to here are a couple of pictures after which you'll need therapy you know me I'm warning you, in other words, he thinks he's a tough guy and yeah, you know you're not a tough guy, he just has shitty pictures, guys, you know he has pictures, you know about this, he doesn't have any. anything that is positive, everything is negative, you know he has the head of a specialist in the school of hard knocks, which means he goes from job to job, he can't keep a job, but you know he is a tough guy, he is a man, but I can't do what he, you know, it's like, he has half naked pictures thinking he's Mr., you know he's a Hugh Hefner or something, man, you're not fine, if you want something like that, you'll have to pay for it. and then you don't have the money because you can't keep a job, so I just look at EQ, I don't hate to say it, look, look, they're friends of his friends, you know, you know, he's a friend of yours. you know the people who are the best, you know, I mean, anyway, that gives you an idea and again, that ad is that by doing that, you know it's a pleasure to get free and upgrade, but you get the profile senior that you can access. see who they are before you hire and based on his profile I came down to this, hello, thank you for sending your handful for our moving position, we really appreciate which I appreciate.
I appreciate you taking the time after a very close request. and the approach and the profile we feel that maybe we are not the best option, in other words, I don't think you are going to do well here, you know, this is probably not the best option because I am not looking for someone like you, you We wish you the best of luck in quickly finding the right position for you, J and that's true. I've been wishing him for a long time that might not be good for me, but hey, he'll probably find that position. that's good for him and I hope he understands that, but don't be honest, don't be a jerk, you know your stuff sucks and you know you have an attitude problem and you know you hang out with bums. drug addicts, you know, drug addicts who have no ambitions in life, that may be true, but that's not what you want to communicate to the guy, you want to communicate it to God in a positive way because, hopefully, if you really want the best way, yeah you want it. go look for a better job and then responded with a smart guy, but hey, that's what it is anyway, that's what's going to happen with Facebook ads and they're there 110 percent free, so let me do that and Again I'll put my ad there and you'll just adjust it for your moving company or your business, whatever you want to do and you can do whatever you want with it, it's there for you, it's free, but I want to address something else now.
What is going to happen is that people are going to start calling you and that is absolutely fine, you are going to start receiving because for now what is going to happen and this is what I have discovered to be true, you are going to receive a hundred people who call you for a position that you're going to schedule probably outside of that, let's say 50 percent of those 50 people that you're coming to, you're going to schedule them to come to any of you out of those 50 that you come here. interview 10 could come to your interview, of those 10 you may be able to hire five.
I don't know, five that you hire for free will actually show up to work when you give them a day to work and of those three, that job that comes to work you keep one and that's what I wanted to tell you, hire and overhire, overhire in other words. If you need removals, hire six because if you want removals you want to hire six because I guarantee those other four, they will be gone in a matter of days, if not hours, you already know, so hire nxs. It's amazing when you hire someone, hire slowly. The key word is that you don't want to just jump into a new hire, so hire slowly, fire quickly when someone is gone. working out, don't try to give them a second chance and a third chance and a fortune, don't say it's okay, they're going to get better, don't fire them now, get rid of them, they'll be a burden on your business.
You don't want to have a bad move from these guys because a bad move can quickly trigger a bad exchange of fire. Don't keep those guys right, so now there's another thing that I just started implementing and I'm finding and I don't really have the results for you, but something that I want to mention to you every time you schedule an interview, what you want them to bring, you want have them bring several things, you want them to bring their identification. you actually want to see their ID on the Social Security card, you want to know that you're hiring someone legal, because that could be bad if you don't, you know, especially if you're hiring a driver, which happened and you say, I'm hiring to the poor driver.
I go in, yes, I can drive. I have a driver's license blah blah blah and then I find out after I've hired them and I haven't looked at their drivers links to make sure I find the third driver's license is actually suspended so if they come to occupy a driver position, bring proof that the third driver's license is valid, a valid ID, if it's just a moving company, just make sure they have some type of ID. whether it's a state ID or something you want, something with your face on it and your Social Security card, etc., you wanted to bring that, but you went to the drivers, you asked them to bring your driving record, a copy of your driving record. here in Michigan, it's like seven dollars for them to get your driving record.
Ask them to go to the Secretary of State, get it and bring it to you. You actually want to check your driving record. They have many duis in the history. whether they have their driver's license or not, it's not something that you necessarily want the job to have a lot of, you know, possessions, drug possession charges, it's not someone that wants to work for you, right, but anyway, Before you hire, another thing you should do is ask them to come to 16 personality dot com, it's free to get. 16 personalities calm down, you can have them take this test that has several questions and it will come up and give them some type, give them a personality. and then basically, um and then you can, if you want to know what kind of personalities you have, you have people who analyze, these are bookworm types, you have diplomats, you know, the diplomats, they will be your know the people who work, you're going to have sentinels, you know they're going to be, they're trying hard to be real, the Scouts, they're going to look a little bit like that and they're going to be out there, outgoing guys, right? know how to permeate this is what I did I was an entrepreneur to um I don't know what to have tea I think I don't know maybe but this is what I did when I took the test is that it occurred to me, so I guess I'm an exploring person, smart, energetic and very perceptive who really lives on the edge, which is true and most entrepreneurs probably will, but my person says I'm a real entrepreneur, but anyway you get to have them take this test once they are done, you can send them an email and say hello when you're done with that and you get it by email, print it out and bring it to me or email it to me because I want to. to see what this personality test says about you, okay, and just have them take the test and it's not like you can't hire firefighters based on that, it's not something you can do, but it will give you a good idea. who is the right person, other than that, when someone comes in, do an analysis, go to their Facebook page, find them on social media to see them, you know, that's what I like about jobs on Facebook, when someone posts that they are interested in my work.
I can actually see his profile and then I can take a look at it and I can make my decision based on his profile, you know, and you don't want to judge someone because they live the life of a smoker or whatever. and there are no hard and fast rules about what you are looking for, but you know that if you check their Facebook profiles, you will understand who they are and if you can live with that type of person that you could be friends with. that type of person you can resonate with that type of person, there may be a good employee for you, but like this, that aging guy, Timki, is a tough guy, I could tell right now that he would be one of these guys if he said it so evil. he's going to resign and take his hat off because he can't keep awork, you know, he thinks he knows he has the world, he buys the city, he knows what he's doing and you know what he's doing and you know he learned from the school of hard knocks, it just means he has an attitude problem, he doesn't go to fit me and you're not going to fit this position, does that mean you're not going to fit another moving company?
No, not at all, he could get along very well with some other moving company. At another moving company he might get along great at a landscaping company or a house cleaning company or whatever he knows he's going to work on, but the only thing he needs to figure out is that a personality he could being is something you can work with and that should be your determining factor, there is no hard and fast rule. true, never under any circumstances buy if they are black and if you are white and someone is black, never say that, that is why you are not hiring first of all, if that is the type of person you are, please don't do it.
It won't be a business if you are, if you're going to be biased or sexist or whatever. I've had women work for me who worked harder than them, guys, you know, so you don't know, so don't be sexist. Don't be bigoted, don't be racist, you know, if you're doing any of that, you'll deserve any kind of blessing that comes your way, but look at their personality, define them by the character of what you see in front of you. You know it and there will be guys who will be there. You know their Facebook page is going to be something you won't approve of, but they might be the coolest guys.
I mean, how many of the bikers look really tough? They look like they're going to kick your ass, but our big softies underneath, you know, the guys are all tattooed and they've got three, you know, tearjerkers, you know, and with their heads ripped off, you know, they look like they just came out. from a biker bar or a Russian prison, with their tattoos and everything you know, they could be the best most intellectual people, so keep that in mind, but if you're just busy, we want to review their profile and look at their general personality , if that's something you can deal with, that's great, you know they might work better for you, but now let's see, once you hire them, what it is that you want to offer, so if you can get benefits, give them benefits. but at least they're supposed to give you workers' compensation, if you can't pay workers' compensation, there's a workaround and I'm going to tell you what that workaround is, that workaround is basically, um, what you do is you have your workers go and get a workers' compensation policy for themselves, so they go as themselves and start a workers' compensation policy and then you reimburse them for that workers' compensation policy, so instead of paying two hundred and three hundred dollars per person for workers' compensation, you might pay $50, $75 per person, okay, but reimburse them for that, okay, you should definitely have workers' compensation if you're going to hire them.
W2 you have to have workers comp if you are going to spend all your money or 1099 it is assumed. have it all themselves, but you really have to keep an eye on that 1099 because if you're technically their only form of employment, they're supposed to be under w2 as an employee, not SUP, not as a subcontractor, so you have to keep an eye on that, so if you have an amount From 1099, you have to find out if they have other sources of income, and if they don't, they are technically supposed to be under w2. I'm not a lawyer.
I'm trying to give you legal advice. I'm just giving you what I know to be true. Okay, if you have any questions, make sure you talk to the appropriate terminals and you will find the three types of advice, like what is a small business over the corporation, so will a lawyer give you a free consultation, etc., and so on. , and if you can afford it, get something to help you, you know, who knows if you can afford an HR person. Excellent, of course, hire an HR person once. you get them employed you want to start training them there are some excellent training videos online.
No, no, I'm not going to show you how to train them, but you can have a lot of good training videos that you can. go to the videos, write how to pack a box, how to load a truck and there are some great videos for them, but I'll leave you a link to a YouTube channel that actually has a good series of decent videos teaching people how to load . a truck is a great introduction it's a great first exposure to truck learning but ask them to review it if you have an employee manual ask them to review it actually take a day or two and train your people and how and what it can wait.
Okay, I'm going to do some more videos where this video is almost 40 minutes, so they're pretty long, but I know you guys are really interested in this and I'm going to have later videos. I show you some of the videos to train the mind to train you on and hopefully we will continue this series so I plan to make this video one of our one of the most important series so I hope I can give you. some good thoughts on this and we'll move on, let me know what problems you're having hiring people because I've probably had to deal with the same problems that you have, so I'm going to go back there, let's go.
I probably had the same problems that you had with working and employing people so I probably got some good ideas and I've been doing this for almost 10 years but I'm going to try to give you the best information on this because I know that this is going to be key because if If you get a good group of people working for you, your business will be much better and therefore less hassle, drama-free and all sorts of other things.
