How to Find a Manufacturer for Your Clothing Line | Alibaba Alternative | Entrepreneur Life UKJun 06, 2021
Hello guys, thank you very much for clicking on another video and welcome if you are new. My name is Teddy G and this channel is basically about me building my
clothingbrand and taking you guys on the journey with me, so in this video that's it. What I meant by I plan to leave some gems in this video. I'm going to tell you exactly how I found a
manufacturerand how you can
manufacturerand I'm not just going to say
alibaba, I'm going to go further. in depth so let's get into it so manufacturing takes three stages so obviously you have
yourfirst point of contact and this is where you are contacting lots and lots of different manufacturers and you can have lots and lots of different manufacturers contacting you Also, especially if you have an Instagram account associated with
clothingbrand, you probably have a lot of direct messages, after this, narrow it down to a few manufacturers you've been talking about and start getting samples from each of those manufacturers and gentle.
It's kind of an evaluation of who will work best for you and then you decide on one or two manufacturers that you want to work with and you start placing your wholesale order and then you start selling their stuff. Happy Days if only it were that simple. When you start researching to
findyour own manufacturer, you type into Google and the first thing that usually comes up is
alibabaand for me, yeah, I explored alibaba, so alibaba is this marketplace that has a lot of different manufacturers for literally anything, not just clothing , and you write. on what you're looking for and you talk to a lot of manufacturers that way, I gave up on alibaba pretty quickly and I'll tell you why alibaba is too much for a small startup to navigate and actually find a manufacturer that's going to work for you because there are so many manufacturers out there and many of them won't even meet the minimum order requirement because they are looking at hundreds of products and that's just not realistic for a startup clothing got burned so I quickly said no, Alibaba doesn't. is for me.

I need to find something a little smaller. That's when I discovered Sewport, so the port is a little smaller. It's still some kind of market and it's literally just for clothes. brands I think the company is based in the UK and I think nowadays you have to pay to use the website, but when I first discovered the port you didn't have to pay, you could post your project there and the makers can contact. you or you will contact the manufacturers with your project in the way that works best for you. I found a couple of manufacturers that I started working with, so I found one that was based in Pakistan and I found one that was based here, but then the manufacturing was done in Pakistan.
So, the company that was based here I had a meeting with them and everything went very well and they told me to get in touch. I remember this. I actually cried, so they said, "You know we are a good company, you can contact this company." I worked with them and asked them what our standards and quality of work are, so I contacted that company and talked to them. Everything was fine. I don't know what that company conveyed to the manufacturing company because the manufacturing company called me. I stood up and said why did you call the company and I told him why did you tell me and he said, "You know we don't want to work with you anymore" and I actually cried real tears because I thought I had finally found a manufacturing company with the I had to work for them to just leave me like this, it hurt anyway, I went ahead and found a different manufacturing company where I started receiving samples from them, guys these samples were so bad, how are you going to send that to me with your chest I don't understand it and this is what made me not want to work with soap or more because I complained that I had paid for these samples and they were horrible but so poor they started asking me 112 questions about whether I had sent them the pantone color of the black shade , as far as I'm concerned black is black so I sent them a very clear picture of what I want and they sent me nonsense but I was so poor I wasn't trying to listen to that so I was like you.
I know I'm not going to work with Sopo anymore because they are clearly on the manufacturers side and not the consumer side, which is fair enough, but that's not for me, so I left Soport and then found this fantastic website called Sauce , so Sauce is like a sewing port, except I don't think they handle payments there, so it's literally like a directory where you can contact a lot of different manufacturers and I found a lot of different manufacturers that were able to accommodate my small quantity orders and They were located all over the world and that's where I found the Italian manufacturer that I'm working with now, so with four source soy you can even post your project and the manufacturers will contact you, so that's why I really like them.
I really liked the soap. People say so poor. So I really liked all four sources and it's a great website. I'll link it below because it's a good website to look for a manufacturer, it's not that big. Since Alibaba is so poor I don't know how it works now because like I said you have to pay for those four sources which are free and have a big directory of different manufacturers so like I said I'm working with an Italian manufacturer who I found four sources at the moment, but before working with that Italian manufacturer, I actually started working with a British manufacturer.
Then I found the website, do it here again. I'll link it below and again it's a straight forward tutorial but UK based manufacturing. there are companies and types, so you would be surprised how many manufacturing companies are based in the UK and are good, like there is this road that I drive on every day on a high street, like on my way to London, and there is literally a factory up that road you would never have known so I actually worked with a manufacturer that I found on that website and they are based in Leicester and they helped me produce some of the things in my handmade collection but do not finish.
I actually sold it because I didn't like the material they used and it wasn't the quality I needed and that's the problem with manufacturing in the UK, there isn't a huge variety of fabrics. The choice you may encounter is a disadvantage to manufacturing products in the UK. I was really thinking about working for a UK manufacturer so I spent a day attending a few different meetings of London based manufacturers and the London manufacturers are really good, like the quality is unique, but you pay, you're going to pay for this quality and in all honesty I couldn't pay the prices they were giving me because those prices are also met with a minimum order quantity now if only I could.
Ordering 10 and paying those prices is great, but having to order like 50 and paying those prices just didn't make sense to me, which is why I ended up going to my Italian manufacturer that I've been talking to for a while. and that's what I'm working with now, so my advice to you is to get my notebook so you don't forget anything, try to keep it as local as possible, like I told you now, I'm working with an Italian manufacturer, Italy is literally a Air travel away, you can get to and from Italy for about £50 if you're lucky, so try to keep it as local to the UK if possible.
Yes manufacturing in the UK can be a bit expensive but there are cheaper ones but they are based in Leicester and you have to look at what I did when looking for a UK manufacturer. I simply wrote down all the email addresses of these manufacturers that I found on that website and sent them an identical one. I emailed each and every one of them and just waited to see who would contact me, then I set up meetings with those people, had conversations with them, and decided whether they were going to be a good fit for me or not, they weren't.
It suits me personally which is why I decided to go to Italy which is a bit cheaper and the quality will still be fantastic but if you can afford to pay those prices for UK manufacturers and you are based in the UK I would . Definitely, definitely, take that route instead of going overseas later on when you need to produce a lot of garments, that's when you can start looking at overseas manufacturing because I guess at that point you'll probably have a bigger budget and you'll be able to go there. stay there and evaluate the quality and make sure things are made exactly the way you want but when starting out my biggest advice would be to keep it local and also when working with manufacturers especially those you don't know try to find a way to protect your money, whether through PayPal or escrow.
I have not used escrow. I've looked into using escrow, but use PayPal or something that protects your money. the third, so if something happens, you will be able to recover that money or at least recover some of it to finish, if I have not made it clear already. I hope I haven't rambled in this video. You are looking for a manufacturer and you are a small business. Use source.com and if you are based in the UK and want a UK manufacturer, use makeithere.org. I'll link everything in the description guys, thank you very much. Thank you very much for stopping by and tuning in to this video.
