Hey guys ChrisFix here And today I'm going to show you how to fix a car that has

sugar

in the gas

tank

. Now this video not only applies to the

sugar

in your gas

tank

, but it also applies if you put the wrong

fuel

in your tank Maybe you have a gas car and you put diesel in by mistake or something fell into the tank and you need to

clean

it . I'll cover that too and that also includes rust. Maybe your

fuel

tank is rusted. Your fuel lines are rusted. Whatever. It is, something is dirty and you need to

clean

the fuel tank.

You must leave it. You must replace the fuel filter. Replace the fuel pump. Clean fuel lines or clean fuel injectors. I'm going to cover all of that in this video so you can easily clean the

entire

fuel

system

. Now If you missed the last video, this car was totaled pretty badly. Let me show you what it looked like before and in that video. I showed you how to safely remove all the spray paint, so we went from this to this and from this to this and from this to this and from this to this And finally from this to this so we removed every speck of paint and now Susan looks amazing.

More Interesting Facts About,

how to clean out the entire fuel system vandalized with sugar in gas tank...

I'll be sure to link that video in the description. But unfortunately, spray painting the car isn't the only way it was

vandalized

. You can see that this fuel door does not close. You can see some sugar down there. And as you can imagine, the fuel tank is now loaded with sugar. This doesn't look too bad, but it was much worse when they delivered the car. The truck driver told me that the car ran out of gas. So we needed to add some so I was able to get it off the trailer and then when I added gas I noticed there was sugar in the fuel filler hose but we didn't have time to clean it out.
how to clean out the entire fuel system vandalized with sugar in gas tank
So I had to bite the bullet and add gas to the tank, even though I threw away a lot of sugar because we had to get this car off the trailer. So I want to give you a realistic idea of what that day was like. I have the car. So let's add some sugar, and by adding even more sugar, I'm giving you the worst case scenario. That way, without a doubt, you know it. They can fix their own car if they encounter this problem. Now you might be thinking. This is really bad because there are myths that say that adding sugar to the fuel tank will ruin the engine and lucky for us.
how to clean out the entire fuel system vandalized with sugar in gas tank
That is not true. And the reason it's not true is because sugar doesn't dissolve in gasoline and I'll show you that. I have this setup right here. So I'm adding regular table sugar to these two jars and first let's add some water to this jar and stir and in about 10 seconds the water completely dissolves the sugar now. Let's add gasoline to the sugar in the other jar and we're going to stir this and no matter how much we stir this, the sugar won't dissolve. So, as you just saw, sugar dissolves in water. No problem, but it doesn't dissolve in gasoline at all, and that's a good thing.
That means it remains solid and there are small granules that our fuel filter could filter out. Now these granules Their size varies from 100 to 400 microns and our fuel filter for gasoline engines can filter up to 10 microns, which means that the sugar cannot pass the fuel filter. It filters it out, which is good. Then all we have to do is drop the fuel tank, clean it and replace the fuel filter and we're done. It's also a good idea to clean the fuel pump assembly. So no sugar goes through the fuel pump and in case you don't have sugar, maybe you have diesel water rust.
Whatever is in your fuel tank that gets past the fuel filter, I'll show you how to clean the fuel lines, fuel rail, and fuel injectors. So let's clean the

entire

fuel

system

of this car. Let's get started as we are going to have to remove the fuel tank with the front wheels locked. Let's raise the rear of the car with a jack high enough to lower the tank. Then slide the ramps under the wheels and lower the car onto the ramps. And we didn't drive the car onto the ramps because we don't want to run it with sugar in the tank.
So with the car safely lifted here are all the tools and products we will use to get the job done as usual. I like to start by putting on our safety glasses. And since we're working with the fuel system and gasoline, it's a good idea to have a fire extinguisher on hand. Now, as far as tools, we're using all the common hand tools so you can get the job done yourself at home, a set of socket wrenches, some screwdrivers. That's really all you need. I'm also using an air compressor to blow out those fuel lines and fuel injectors and we'll use 99 isopropyl alcohol as our solvent to clean them.
Now you said I was going to need a new fuel filter, but unfortunately on this car the fuel filter is built into the fuel pump assembly, so I have a new one in case the original one is dirty. And finally, if they had installed it. one of these six dollar locking gas caps from the start we wouldn't have to do any of this. So I bought one of these to install when we're done. So, let's get started. And the first thing we need to do is go to the front of the car and disconnect our negative battery terminal.
You want to do this every time you work on the fuel system and there may be fumes that could ignite With a spark this will prevent sparks from coming out and with that disconnected we could start removing the fuel tank from the car And instead of going under the car to start unscrewing it The first thing we want to do is get into the car and disconnect the fuel pump. So to get to the fuel pump, let's take out the bottom of the rear seat by pulling it up like this. We can then remove the seat completely and that gives us access to our fuel pump, which is right under this cover.
All we have to do is unscrew the four screws holding the cover. Then we can move the cover and get access to the electrical connection to the fuel pump and on this connector there is a red security tab and you can see that there is a little clip here that we need to push in with the screwdriver. And then we can push the tab to the side to unlock it like this. Now we can press the tab on the connector and remove it from the fuel pump. Now let's disconnect these three fuel lines. It is very important that these fuel lines are not pressurized.
I know that in this case it is not pressurized because the car has not been driven for a couple of weeks and a little advice in case there is excess fuel pressure. Have a towel nearby. That way you could plug the fuel line connector and prevent fuel from spilling. spraying everywhere now We can start removing the fuel line by first taking out this blue tab like this and then pressing the tab on the side of the connector and that will allow us to take out the fuel line now with these two fuel lines, there is no tab blue to take out.
All you need to do is press the white tab and then pull the fuel line like this, do the same with the other fuel line and beautiful. And with all of that disconnected we can now drop the fuel tank and fuel pump together without anything hanging. And this is such a good design, if I wanted to replace a fuel pump, I could do it in 30 minutes. No problem, and you don't even have to go under it. car. I love that more cars should be like this. Alright. So now what we need to do is drop the fuel tank and to do that.
Let's go to the back of the car and let me show you where the fuel tank is. So let's go under the car and this right here is the fuel. tank You can see there's a strap on this side and a strap right here that holds the fuel tank. There is also this exhaust piece. I'm hoping what we can do is tilt the fuel tank down and slide it out. So there is no need to disconnect this exhaust. Another good thing is that our fuel tank is almost empty. There's probably less than a gallon of fuel in here.
That will make it really easy to handle. And before we remove these straps to lower the tank, we want to disconnect the fuel filler line right here. So up there is where the gas cap is and the fuel runs down into the gas. tank So let's loosen the hose clamp and then carefully remove the hose from the fuel tank. And any time you remove a hose, twisting it will help remove it easier. Don't take it out directly, it's almost there. Well, check it out. All the sugar comes out of the hose and don't worry. We're going to clean that up right after we drop the fuel tank.
So now let's put a jack stand underneath to hold the fuel tank so it doesn't fall. then let's remove this bolt that holds the strap on the passenger side on Okay, and now let's remove the other bolt that holds the strap on the driver's side like this. So now our tank is completely supported by that jack stand, the strap on this side and the The strap on this side is loose. Now we just need to get to the bolts on the other sides of the strap. And then we can let this drop to the end. So let's loosen and remove the bolt on this side and then we can remove the strap.
And then do the same on the other side, loosen and remove the bolt and then we can remove the strap. Simply place it around the exhaust. Okay, now lower the jack stand and let's be careful to slide this tank away from the exhaust. Perfect. And then we can slide it out. And with that, our fuel tank is out and something rather interesting is there to prevent you from siphoning fuel. So you can't put a hose in the fuel tank. But that was great. Alright. So now what we want to do is remove the fuel pump. Then use some compressed air to blow away the dirt and dust on the top of the pump so it doesn't get into the tank.
And now we want to remove this metal locking ring that holds the pump and to do that. We need to turn it counterclockwise to take it out. You won't be able to do this by hand. So grab a hammer and a socket or a chisel or a screwdriver, something to get to the edge here. And just hit it so we can turn it. loose Good. Now we can remove the lock ring and then we can remove the pump assembly from the tank while I lift it up. There is a fuel line that needs to be disconnected.
So press that green tab and carefully remove the fuel line like this. Then we can remove the assembly completely and take a look at the damage. You can see that a lot of sugar went into the tank. So let's clean this up and to do that we first drain the gas from the tank into our catch can and take out as much as we can. It won't be perfectly dry, but the more you can get out, the better. Then we could use some. towels to absorb the remaining fuel that we couldn't get out and drain it into the can like this.
So, with all the fuel completely removed from the tank, you can see that it is completely dry. There is also some sugar left and I would need to always try to get all this sugar out. There are so many little granules. Also, we have this here. Let me disconnect this and let's take out this fuel line. So the trick to getting all that sugar out will be to use a little bit of water. So hose down the inside of the tank and then move the tank to shut off the water. around the inside of the tank Basically, rinse it out and dissolve any sugar that may be left in there.
Once you rinse the tank, we can now empty it and the water will have the sugar dissolved. This is how we make sure to eliminate. all the sugar and then the last thing you want to do is make sure you try to dry as much as you can inside the tank. It doesn't have to be perfect because we will let it sit in the sun. But the more you go out the better and it looks pretty dry in there. Well, I was able to get my whole arm in there and I'm sure I dried it really well.
But I still want to drag it into the sun. so that it heats up and all the water there evaporates. This way we make sure there is no water here at all. And we let this dry and evaporate. Let's go to the car and look at all the sugar we just drained from the fuel tank. Now what do you do with this old gasoline? Well, you can't really reuse it. I guess you could sneak it in but it's not worth it. There's not much here. So what you want to do is put it in a container and recycle it, and you'll want to take it directly to your city recycling center after you finish the job.
Don't keep this inside. in your house or in a garage because it is flammable. So put all the fuel in the container and close it tightly. Now let's go to the back of the car. And let me show you how to clean the fill tube that has all the sugar in it. And if you think there's a lot of sugar up here, let's go under the car and take a look at all the sugar in this hose. Let's see if we can get some. Oh man. Look at all this sugar. It's just obstructing this. So we really need to clean this up.
Okay, before we install our clean fuel tank. First, let's eliminate as much sugar as we can from here. So I'll use a flathead screwdriver and be careful not to puncture anything. You just want to scrape off that sugar. and you can see that it comes off in clumps. We don't want to force blood sugar to drop if we could help it. Is better. If we remove the sugar from the top even though we are going to rinse this, once you remove as much of the sugar as possible, we rinse this with water and then we put the hose on the fill tube and rinse it completely.
Now this feels very strange to do, but don't be afraid. And really let the water flow and flush out any sugar that may be trapped in there. Alright, with that completely flushed, I'm sure all the sugar is gone, but I'm not sure all the water is gone. We cannot allow water to enter our clean, dry fuel tank. So what we're going to do is get a funnel and then take your 99 isopropyl alcohol and pour it into the fill tube to remove all the water and the water that mixes with the alcohol will break down a little bit and the alcohol evaporates very quickly.
So even if we don't get all the water out, it will evaporate. So now we're going to let this dry just like we let the gas tank dry. And while it's drying, we want to blow out the fuel lines that run all the way. to the engine compartment We also want to clean those fuel injectors and the fuel rail. So let me show you how to do it. Now to get to the fuel rail, remove the engine cover and then we need to remove this intake pipe. So let's remove the vacuum line, then unscrew the hose clamp on the airbox from the filter and remove that tube and finally, on this side of the engine, the intake tube goes to the throttle body.
So let's loosen the hose clamp, disconnect the sensor wire, and remove the intake tube. Okay, with that removed, it gives us access to our fuel lines, the fuel rail, and the four fuel injectors that we'll be cleaning. But before you do that, grab a towel and since we removed the intake cover, put that towel on. the throttle body here So that if any dirt or debris falls on it, we can easily remove it and it won't be absorbed by the engine. Now that we've got that covered, let's get rid of the fuel lines and any time you're working with fuel lines I like them. to add a towel under the area to absorb any fuel that may leak below.
Let's take the blue tab off the main fuel line. Then press the white tab at the bottom and remove it from the fuel rail. Good with the other hose. All you need. What we need to do is press the green tab and pull it out like this and then set this aside now. Let's remove the fuel rail, which is right here. There's a screw right here. We have to remove Okay, and there's one more screw here, okay, now we just have to pull and move until it comes out like this. Now, let's move the fuel rail up here To make it easier to disconnect the fuel injector cables to disconnect the cables.
First lift the red tab. Then press the black tab and remove it from the connector and then repeat the process to disconnect the other three injectors. Very good. So with our fuel rail and fuel injectors disconnected. We'll put this aside and one thing I noticed is that this is a system of no return. So you have a fuel line that goes in right here? And fuel lines don't come out on many fuel injection systems. You have a fuel line coming out that goes to a fuel pressure regulator. But I took a look and the fuel pressure regulator is actually built into the fuel pump assembly.
That means there is one less line. to get back to the engine, which is pretty good. That also means that this line here is the only line we need to clean up. This line here is for the evaporation system. We definitely don't want to blow air or liquid. on this, so just blow out the lines connected to the fuel rail, which in this case is just this line. So we're going to blow this one out and this line goes to the fuel tank. So if we come back here, let me show you. In the setup I have, I have a catch can right here and then this is our high pressure fuel line.
This is the fuel line we are going to bleed. And then here are the vent pipe fuel lines and the evaporative fuel lines which I don't know which is which, but it doesn't matter because we don't have to worry about these. So this is going to drain directly into this container and we're going to empty it. Let's see if there's anything here and we'll empty it. this fuel line. We're going to start using pressurized air. This is connected to my air compressor and you can hear the nozzle leaking but the pressure is set at 50 psi. So just blow air through the line to remove all the fuel like that.
Okay, so we've cleaned the fuel line. It's time to add some 99 isopropyl alcohol into the fuel line until it's full and we'll know it's full because by the way we'll see it coming out the other end, never use water in fuel. Lines odds are: you won't be able to remove it all and then your car won't start. Although most of the alcohol will evaporate if a little is mixed with the fuel. It is not a big thing. It will burn with gasoline and that's it. Now it's starting to come out. Now we are going to remove it completely with compressed air.
And once the alcohol stops coming out, we're done. And that's all there is to it to clean the fuel lines. It's so simple to force the old gas out, then add the isopropyl alcohol and then force it out and that will force out everything that was in here. here That shouldn't have been there. Now. You can do it as many times as you want. In this case, I don't think we have to do it too many times. Let's see what we got from the fuel line. So this is actually quite interesting. This drain pan was completely clean before I cleaned that fuel line and looked at all these specs.
And they're a little gritty, it's almost like sand or rust or something. This would definitely clog a fuel injector and is not sugar, meaning the fuel filter did its job. This is how to clean the fuel lines and you can see we got some decent results. Especially for a new car, I'm surprised that cleaning the fuel lines is pretty simple. Let me show you how to clean your fuel injectors and fuel rail anytime. We are working with a fuel rail. There will always be excess fuel here. So just drain it before removing the fuel injectors. Okay, and once it's completely drained, let's remove the injectors.
And all you do is remove this retaining clip and pull the injector out of the fuel rail like this. Then repeat the process. with the other injectors, take out the clip, take out the injector, take out the clip. Oh and try not to let it fly and take out the injector and finally one last clip and one last injector to get it out properly. So with all the injectors removed we were able to clean our fuel rail. Now let's add alcohol to the fuel rail and you can see where my finger is blocking where the fuel line connects.
So you could fill it and once it's full, splash around. to clean the fuel rail Finally, drain it and blow some air to clean it. So I could flush the fuel rail a couple of times. I didn't see anything come of that. This looks pretty clean So now we can let this dry and let me show you how to clean the fuel injectors. Let's do a reverse wash. And since we're going to clean the fuel injectors, we found specs on the fuel line we cleaned. I thought it would be a good idea to get out the fuel injector tester.
So let's block the four fuel injectors on the machine and run the test. This test will put the injectors in conditions that would be similar to if you were driving your car. This test also allows you to look at the spray pattern to see if they are clogged or not atomizing fuel properly. But in this case, they look really good. So let's let this test finish. And after the test you will be able to see that the volume on each of these is exactly the same, which is what you want to see. But that also means we don't have sugar in the injectors and they're not clogged.
But I'm still going to show you how to clean them. We will do a reverse wash and not use this special machine. We will do it by hand using only the air compressor. This is all you're going to need: get a hose that fits on the end of your fuel injector like that. And then I bought one of these fuel injector connectors from the junkyard. Just plug it in. These are pretty universal so they will work on most injectors and then it will connect to a 9 volt battery and every time you touch it the fuel injector will fire but this will also create a very small spark.
So make sure you stay away. far enough and don't use gasoline. I'm using isopropyl alcohol to clean this that way we don't cause explosions. Now, to thoroughly clean these fuel injectors, we're going to do something called reverse flushing, normally the fuel goes in through the top and out through the bottom, but instead we're going to turn it around. We're going to force our solvent and our alcohol in at the bottom and out at the top and what that's going to do is normally. Anything stuck here is not going to be cleared by simply pushing it in the same direction.
Normally, if we force it in the opposite direction, we will loosen it and clean it. That way we can thoroughly clean our fuel injectors. The first thing we do is make sure the bottom of the injector is clean and you can see there are some deposits. So, let's clean them with a plastic bristle brush. That way these deposits won't be forced into the injector when we reverse wash it and it will now look nice and clean. So let's put the hose on the bottom of the fuel injector and connect the wiring. harness Add the alcohol to the hose and then use our compressed air to pressurize the hose now.
All you need to do is turn the injector on and off and the air pressure will force the alcohol through the injector in reverse to clean it. then be sure to finish by washing the injector in the normal direction to make sure it's all clean. Beautiful, this is how fuel injectors are cleaned now. I did the other fuel injectors off camera so we could speed things up now. Let's install them on the fuel rail and to do that. What you want is a little bit of silicone paste and you're just going to put a little bit of silicone on the o. -Put both the top and bottom o-ring together and then move on, you only need a thin layer and this will help lubricate it.
So it's nice and easy to install and we don't pinch these O-rings. This is also a good time to make sure the O-rings are free of cracks. They are completely round. There are no flat spots. There is no damage to them because if there is you should replace them. So you don't have fuel leaks, they look good. So let me show you how to install it on the fuel rail. And all you need to do is take the fuel injector and push it in so it goes all the way in like this. And then take your clip and we'll install it so that it fits and holds the fuel injector in place.
So here's a close up shot and you can see the retaining clips in a slot in the injector like that. And then we could finish. The last two retaining clips are fine. So with all the injectors, the last thing you want to do is give each one a nice hard tug and make sure they are all the way in. They don't come out and all the clips are there correctly, so now let's install it. Installation is quite simple. You want to make sure the injectors seat completely in the intake port. So push it in well and check that each injector is fully in.
We can then reconnect the fuel injector connectors making sure they click and press the red button. tab on top to lock it now we can screw the fuel rail on. So put some medium strength threadlocker on the screw and tighten it until snug, don't overtighten them because this just screws into the plastic and then repeat this process for the other screw Add some threadlocker and tighten it until it's tight now. We could remount the evaporator purge valve to the fuel rail and then connect the main fuel line until it clicks. And don't forget to press that blue tab and then we can push the evaporation hose into the purge valve.
Okay, now let's remove thetowel to keep debris out of the intake and then let's install the intake tube. Connect that wire to the sensor. Tighten the tube down onto the throttle body. Connect the vacuum line. Connect the tube to the filter. box and tighten it And finally add the plastic cover Beautiful, everything is installed correctly, the fuel lines, fuel injectors and fuel rail are all clean. The only thing that is not clean is the engine compartment. So let's fix that and here we go. Nice and clean So we're done with everything here and I can't wait to start this engine now.
The last thing we need to do is put the fuel tank back into the car. And this tank is also very dirty. So some soapy water. Then clean it and check it, although you will never see this gas tank. I still like to clean things and leave them nice and tidy. Now, let's install the fuel pump assembly, but I'm not going to reinstall the original fuel pump. The reason is twofold if we look down. It's hard to see, but if I turn this around, check it out. There's a lot of sugar and also some dirt in there, probably varnish from the fuel.
And the second reason is because right behind it is the fuel filter. It is integrated into the fuel pump assembly. Every time you get something you don't want in your fuel tank, whether it's diesel, water, sugar, whatever. You are always supposed to replace the fuel filter. And since we can't replace this one, I'm going to change it. entire fuel pump assembly with a new OEM fuel pump assembly. This is perfect and I'm doing it too because this car is being auctioned for charity. I want the next owner to have a car that runs and drives perfect.
Now at any time. m installing new parts. I always compare them to the old part to make sure they are identical and these two are the same so out with the old and the new we are going to install this so first we need to connect the fuel line that we took out of the tank. And do not worry. I cleaned this just like we did the other fuel line. So push it to fit well now. We need to install the new O-ring that seals the tank. And then we can attach the pump assembly, being careful not to bend the float.
Next, let's connect the fuel line from inside the tank. So it fits Okay, now we can finish placing the pump assembly into the tank. And then let's install the lock ring by pushing it down and then hammering the lock ring clockwise to fix it in place. Beautiful with all this put together. Let's install the tank back under the car now. We just need to put the tank back in its original place and I'm so glad they designed this. So we don't have to remove the exhaust, then use a jack stand to support the tank. place And let's install the tank straps starting with this one here, as usual.
I like to use a little medium strength threadlocker on the bolts. Then we can hold the strap and then hand tighten both bolts into place, finally tighten the bolts to specifications like this Okay, now we have to do the same for the other side. So put the belt in place, hand-tighten the bolts that have a threadlocker, and then torque them to factory specifications. Okay, now that the tank is bolted down, let's remove the jack stand now. Let's finish down here by putting the hose clamp back on the fill hose. And then let's slide that hose into the fuel inlet until it's fully seated all the way into the connector, like this, then we can tighten the hose clamp and don't overtighten it because it could break the plastic connector tight enough to hold the hose so it doesn't leak.
And finally, the last thing we need to do is connect our new fuel pump first. Let's connect the main fuel line. So make sure it fits and then we just need to connect the other two fuel lines making sure they both snap into place. Now we can reconnect the cables by pushing them all the way in. And don't forget it. to press that little red tab to lock it. Okay, now we can put the cover in place and then tighten the four screws in the corners of the cover. And finally, let's put the seat back and press down on each side.
So it snaps into place. So with our seats installed you don't have to worry. Next I will do a full video on how to super clean the interior. So stay tuned for that, but for now let's put some fuel in our tank. So when we start adding fuel, just add a little bit because we have to go under it. car and check for leaks. And I don't see any leaks. That means we could add the rest of the gas to the tank and I'm adding about four gallons. We have enough to start the car and get to the gas station to fill up.
And now comes the important part of adding a locking fuel cap. What could have prevented this whole sugar-in-the-tank thing? And then the old lid just comes off and we're done here. And finally, the last thing we have to do is connect the battery so we can try to turn it on. So put the ground wire on the post and tighten it. So he's comfortable and he doesn't move beautiful and she's hot So we're ready to go. I'm going to leave the hood open because we're going to want to check back here for fuel leaks once the car is running. go start it.
Oh baby, moment of truth. Now. This is a button. I'm used to a key where you could turn it to the run position and then turn it off and turn it to the run position and turn it off and that will prime the fuel pump in this case. Everything we could. What we do is simply put our foot on the brake and press it. It's okay, it's still working. There we go, and she's running beautiful. Okay, now we want to go and make sure there are no fuel leaks, so the first place we're going to check is here. in the engine compartment And look back here and smell it, you'll smell it right away It smells like fuel I don't see any leaks coming from the fuel lines, and I don't smell anything and the next place you want to go check Is it over here where we disconnect the fuel pump again?
If you want, you can lift the seat up, but you can also smell it, it will smell like gas very quickly and it doesn't smell, and then the last place to check is to go under the car, just take a quick look and do. I'm sure there's nothing leaking and this all looks fine. So we are ready to start. And finally, let's get the car off the ramps and since I bought this car. I'm dying to go for a walk. So let's take it out and make sure it's working properly. Well, after driving this car for a few minutes, she is running and driving amazingly.
And that's how you clean your car's entire fuel system. We eliminated all that sugar and it is working very well. Now we have to do something with this disgusting interior. So there you have it. This is how to properly clean your car's entire fuel system. I hope this video has been useful. If so, remember to like it. If you are not a subscriber, please consider hitting the subscribe button and as always, all the tools and products I use in this video are linked in the description so you can find them easily and finally, I hope you stay tuned because the next videos are going to be amazing , how to remove this giant scratch here, like If someone put the key in your car and also how to super clean the interior and then we're auctioning off this car for charity. great stay tuned!
