How to Choose the Right Chromebook With 5 Simple QuestionsJun 17, 2021
Over the course of the past few years, a multitude of people have asked me which Chromebook they should buy, and whether it's correspondence via email, social media, neighbors, friends, or family. Honestly, I'm very honored that people actually asked. They give me advice when I'm shopping for a device like a Chromebook, but the problem is that there isn't a
simpleanswer for everyone. they'll be a better fit for them, so I came up with five
questionsI can ask people every time they come to me and say I want to get the best Chromebook. I ask them these five
questions, and as they answer those questions, that helps to inform. their purchasing decisions, so I want to share them with you.
Today's video is brought to you by Nord VPN and they are the VPN of choice for millions of consumers because they keep your browsing safe when you are on the go or at home if you want to learn more about how to take advantage of their VPN service on your Chromebook or machine with windows macbook laptop ipad anything that works on all platforms you can learn more at chrome on box comm forward cut nord vpn and get started today the number one question is a
chromebookeven suitable for your kids coming to home from school and they have Chromebooks assigned to them and the parents see them and maybe even play a little bit and think wow this is a great computer and they search online pretty quickly and they see there's a wide range of prices and lots of cheap high end Chromebooks it goes down there so they immediately think i need a new computer maybe i buy one of those
chromebooks and they dont really understand exactly what i So if you're one of those people, this is the first question I'd ask if a Chromebook is
rightfor you and the easiest way to find out if that's true or not is to use your MacBook or laptop with Existing windows or whatever you're using and use chrome browser and try to stay within that chrome browser for everything you need to do for a week or so if an app exists outside of chrome browser try to find a web version or equivalent or search and see if there is an android app even if you don't have an android phone just to see if there is an android app version of what you need on a daily basis if that's the case then a chromebook might be
rightfor you , but if there are certain apps that you need, like Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator or something like that, or you're making movies and you're trying to edit video on a Chromebook, you'll just get frustrated, it's not going to fit. ar ok so this is the first step in trying to figure out whether or not you should go through the process of deciding on a chromebook is it even the right thing for you to ask question number two what kind of a form factor is it going to be right for you so like with windows devices you will have all sorts of form factors i.e. your Chromebooks that come in detachable x shapes and just tablets and convertibles and just clamshells and then we have the chrome dock so I eat all in one machines and then you have chrome boxes that you would plug into a monitor so there are a wide variety of form factors that you have to think about and decide for yourself how I'm going to use this Chromebook so already decided chrome os is good for me i can do things on this os in this web driven environment cool thats cool what you gonna do with it you gonna be on a desktop all the time maybe a 15 inch device with more screen space alla is going to be a better fit for you or are you on the go all the time and something light and thin is better for you ok maybe a convertible or something in the 12 inch form factor is going to be better for you or do i need being able to write and take notes all the time, well you have to think about that because there are some that have pins and some that don't, so you also have to answer all these questions and say, what do I really want my chromebook to do?
Question number three, how concerned are you with overall feel and quality? Are you someone who takes gadgets and just loves the way things feel when they're made in a premium way and you care deeply about it? Or are laptops and electronics just tools to get a job done and you want to check it out on the side when it's done you need to know this about yourself you need to decide this because again Chromebooks come in a wide variety of form factors and build qualities so you may have already decided chrome os is fine with me and a chromebook will do what i need it to do and i need a convertible i need something to change so i can use it in tablet mode everyone smiles thats great there are some which are cheaply made and all plastic and are clunky and heavy and don't look very nice and then there are some very good ones like a pixel book for example which is designed to the highest spec and is a beautiful piece of hardware you will pay more for that designed piece of hardware and you're going to pay less for the one that doesn't feel as good that the decisions are yours to decide well i have re duced a bit this is what i look for now you need to think about how important build quality is to you and think about those things so you should look for things like aluminum chassis, glass screens, glass touchpad, backlit keys those kinds of nicer conveniences some of us care deeply about me including and some of us don't really care about everything its a place you could possibly save some money question number four what do you expect when you open the lid of the device and the reason i put it that way is because i'm talking about all the stuff like that's on the inside of the clamshell so every time you open a device you get a trackpad and keyboard on the screen , and the reason I've put those things together is because they're probably the most important parts of using a Chromebook or any other laptop for me, for that matter, you're always looking.
When you look at the screen you'll be looking at it constantly, you'll always input with the keyboard and you'll always input with the trackpad, everything else is hit or miss whether or not you have to use those three things that you're going to use every time you pick up the device and so so again you have to decide for yourself our backlit keys important is a great keyboard important or you really don't care too much you just touch the keys think about those things is there a glass touchpad that matters because the glass touchpad is more smooth and responsive and feel better again they do cost more but if you don't mind if you don't mind going na hook on a mouse all the time that's another thing you need to think about screen resolution and color and viewing angles those things matter to you because I've shown terrible screens to certain people and they don't seem to care much I care deeply about those things but not everyone will need to know so For example, if a viewing angle that is poor and faded colors will turn you off completely from a device or if you are simply overlooking. and move on because again the things you don't have to have you don't necessarily need, you can save yourself some money if you can just skip those things and say yes I don't have to have the best screen and I don't have to have a touchpad glass and probably a cheaper chromebook would suffice finally fifth question we've gotten to the point where you said yes you can a chromebook that works for you and we've talked about build quality and we've talked about k keyboards and touchpads and we've talked about form factors and all that stuff that you have your brain on like okay this is where I'm at the last thing you really need to think about is the internals and how powerful are Chromebooks going to be because again these things will inform the price not It's always that the most powerful Chrome OS devices always have the highest price tags, that's not the case, but you'll generally pay a bit more for a beefier processor and so you need to think again what are you going to use this chromebook for this chrome case of this chrome base you're going to go on Facebook and answer some emails because if so the entry level processors that Intel releases in right now these Gemini lakes so you'll see one in 4000 for example they're good there they're actually really good processors and they'll do most of the normal work but are you getting into some graphical stuff? hic work or edit photos and even something like Google Photos or Lightroom or something like that, well you might want a little more processing power and as you get more photos and stuff like that you'll be working with multiple things at once, you probably want a little more RAM or a type of user who opens 50 tabs at a time and that's the way you are and always will be like that and you don't want to change your habits.
You need to think about RAM, you need to have more RAM in your Chromebook, so really think about how you're going to use your Chromebook, what kind of user you are, or who you're buying the Chromebook for, and think you know what to really push the machines they're going to do things that people in general are going to do yes you need a better processor you need to go with the Core i3 or i5 Chromebooks that have those types of processors in them but if you're just someone you're going to check ema il and go on facebook the night you worried about getting whatever is most affordable and makes the most sense to you so now that you've answered all the questions and said ok I think I have a good idea of what type of Chromebook I would like to buy or which one would be best for me or the person I am buying from now what do you do well this video is made to tell you exactly which Chromebook you should buy, in fact you might be watching this video a few months after the time we filmed it and there could be a whole host of Chromebooks that we don't even know about right now, so this isn't to tell you exactly which Chromebook to pick. right now using some kind of formula it's to help you make a buying decision based on the tools that are available in the market right now every store you go to has filters you have the ability to go to the sidebar and changing the screen size on the devices you're looking at the amount of RAM the amount of storage the resolution ution of the screens so I took all the things you just answered while we were going through this video and said yes I need a 15-inch convertible with a pen.
I don't know if that one exists right now, but if it was, it was. to those filters and you selected those things, it would tell you there isn't one available like that so you can change the things you need or want and find the right Chromebooks for you, the whole point of this is to help you. be a better informed buyer of chromebooks and then also there are reviews i mean that's why we review chromebooks in general so you can compare these things side by side but reviews are not enough by themselves same to help you decide whether or not to buy a chromebook if you have no idea what you're looking at so use all the questions you had earlier in this video use those filters to see which ones might work for you after you've narrowed everything down and then see if we've had a r In a review of that device, we try to review as much as we can and if we do, maybe I'll look at a couple of reviews that narrowed it down to two or three devices. me and he said this one feels the best out of all of them well there you go now you've narrowed it down to three you look at one review and you pick that one that's what we're trying to help them do here. it's just making better, more informed buying decisions with the tools that are available right now at your disposal. bell if you want to be alerted when we make future videos like this see you next time
