Feb 27, 2020
Hi guys, this is my

kitchen

, as you can see it looks quite dated. The wife wants to remake it. We will do it on a

budget

. I think I can do it for $500. You will see the difference. I hope you enjoy. So the plan. It's getting that cabinet out of there, it's always in the way, talking to my wife here and I always say, hey, honey, how are you, and I back up in the way, little problem, there are nails between these two

cabinets

here and here that sticks out at all, so I'm going to put my oscillating tool right in the middle of here and just pull them out, yeah, that's all I do, same thing, enjoy some home improvements, we've been jumping under this for a long time, yeah, so We have to paint that, but it actually turned out a lot cleaner than I thought, so what you can see is they put a

counter

in here.

I was able to put this board in first and then I put in these supports when I bought the

counter

top, the center came in one complete piece, I just cut it from the back turning it over, I put the tape that I use, I use a circular saw, five mils egg biscuits in the same spot on the countertop and then there's a little edge here, so if I push in, it's actually underneath, I go to the wall and now it's kind of cut out, so I don't have to put trim in there if I don't walk into this , we also painted white and just threw in an additional base cabinet.

This is a wall cabinet, but I'm using it as a base cabinet, so I'll lift it up and put a base underneath just with some scrap wood or wall screws. I'm not sure. However, what we're doing here now is taking this old countertop and making it look like nice granite. It will have a nice shine. You will be able to find this product in the description below with this, but essentially it is glitter paint. Also, the first thing you should do is make sure your counter is good and wipe off any oil or anything. Make sure you remove it, then you're going to take this black primer and apply it to as many surfaces as you want. to make it look like granite so comes the roller and a brush and just use the brush on the smaller edges and corners you know use the ruler to get all the flat surfaces what you want to make sure you do is tape down everything that doesn't I don't want this primer to touch so for us it was basically the sink we have to worry about any other surface because we are going to repaint everything else afterwards once you have the primer on you need to start put the different colors that come with it. three colors, one thing we noticed is getting to the corner, sometimes you want to cut a brush in a sort of triangular pattern, we had an old brush there and it was very helpful to get to the corners, but essentially you take those three colors and apply it, apply it and then you have these sponges as well that give it a textured look.

My wife is not an artist, but after a little practice, you really get the hang of it. You can practice on a sheet of paper. but you just touch those different colors and use the sponge to give it a texture and I think it turned out very nice. Now what we're going to do is take the glitter and you're going to dip it in there and then just apply it back and forth, you could start with the boards and the back or the corners and then on to the larger flat surfaces that you can apply it on. and then once you have it there, you'll smooth it out. rolling it one last time now, you actually want to put two coats on it instead of just one and that's what's going to give it some kind of protection but also a nice shine, so this is what it's going to look like when it's finished, it should look pretty. smooth finish, but here again you see it to roll it up and then when you're done, you just go through it once and essentially you want to get that smooth finish, you want to get it down there and then go over it. a small area, maybe three or four feet, but overall I am very pleased with it, even after two months of using it, it turned out very well.

Remember we taped everything down, but now that the paint and glitter are dry, we need to remove them, so use an Exacto knife or a box cutter and just run it along the edge so that when you lift the tape you don't pull paint , will have to drive for a couple of days after the top coat, but overall I am very satisfied with it. even after two months of using it and it turned out great, so when cutting the board use a table saw like I have here for my father in law or you can just use a circular saw, it really doesn't take much effort. difference, this will just ensure that you have a straighter line, but even if your line isn't completely straight again, you'll cover it with a trim, so don't be too afraid, just screw it up, you know.
They're cheap so it's not a big deal so what we're going to do is put this bead board up here's a nail gun just keep in mind that you only want to nail it along the edges that you're going to cover and trim, so I'm going to put a little bit of corner. trim here and some bad trim along the bottom top edges if you're using a nail gun, just keep in mind that you can also flip it over once you get to the bottom edge, you're not using the nail gun. One thing you can also do is simply place a piece. up on the back like liquid nails and then we put it on there, but if you ever want to take it off, it will also remove everything that's attached to it and cause a bigger mess, so we've been putting the power board here when they come to a plug, luckily I got right on the seam, so I'll be able to cut my board this way, which didn't have this notch here.
I just had this panel here and I held it up, but once Once you take this out, you can slide it back now. The trick is to please turn off the power to do this. The trick is you have to put it behind the outlet, right here, you're going to keep those feet out. Since you want to be firm you have to take this out because otherwise when you put the cap on the socket it would be too deep so you want it to look like this when it's done so once you have it in place you can squeeze it. oh but first we have to glue it on now, the reason I glue it on is because I don't want to have to put tacks everywhere, I don't pull along the bottom edge on the top edge, look at the link in this area, I don't do.
I really don't want to cross it out. I could use wood filler and fill it in, but this works fine and if I ever get it done, I'll want to do it anyway, so just put in a quarter inch bead. Here, putting a little bit more on the edges, here it looks like it's pushed in pretty well, so I can start pushing it down here and of course to really hold it in place, I'm going to use some brads. Some people say this is excessive, but that's okay. So as I'm pushing up here I can pin it into place, so once this is all centered like this, I'm going to press it down, look, these little tabs here will keep it from sinking in too much, but still. keep it tight that way when you're using your outlet, it doesn't want to move around when you plug things in and out, it gives a nice snug feeling, so it's snug, it doesn't have to be super tight and once I put my plate on it's going to cover all my mistakes right there, this is where it gets tricky now, why do I have a lace to work on where the seam doesn't go all the way to it, but I also have this edge to work on here too, so does it deserve to be written down? everything, but I definitely liked what I came up with, so instead I took a piece of paper and put it in there and went around the edge just like that and that way I know I cut it right inside this paper.
Well, I can actually feel where the lace is, so I can make some marks there as well, so I originally had this trimming plan to cover the seam and all these nail marks here, but you can see this edge here. so I don't really like that, so instead I put a little bit of this trim here and now it's going to be a lot better, so I don't have to paint that edge. You may have to stick a brush in there a little bit, but it will cover these little nails really well and give you a nice clean look.
Here I will show you how to paint

cabinets

. These cabinets are 30 years old and have a glossy finish and I will show you the steps. step by step on how to prepare them for painting and then put them back. The first step is to remove all the doors and hinges. You need to remove the hinges so you can paint the face, but you also need to remove the doors because it is. We'll want to sand them in a different location and paint them as well, so now we just need to sand the faces. We're sanding the doors in the garage right now, but W is 120, just go over the surface now, 120 might actually create a little scratching if you notice that and it changes to 220 after you're done, but we're just trying to go to the Barna store.
I notice I don't feel any kind of finished edge here, so I just stain the face, so it usually takes a long time to go the mile, I probably empty all the cabinets, although you can see we did that on this cabinet, we just covered them with some towels because we're only faced with painting the frame anyway, so I don't want to take everything out. maybe it's a good idea a bad idea. I'm not really sure where to find it here. I'm prepping all the cabinets, you can work with them if you don't worry about the walls, you don't need to tape them off, but there are areas that I was worried about, like the vinyl window, so while I'm painting that area, my wife starts too to put blue tape.
You can see in the description, if you want blue or green tape, that's fine, it's called painters tape. tape and you're going to want to tape all of that down while you apply the primer so you can see here we have everything primed now all the frames in the

kitchen

applied two coats of porthole primer and it came out pretty good Sam last night seems to be holding up . He did a kind of scratch test. I just have to get up here. I scratch to make sure he holds. I know we had a problem before with it chipping because of the varnish underneath, so I'll be able to paint tonight after it sets for a few hours. and now we're going to work on the doors, so now I'm going to sand them using some type of palm sander just for the flat areas.
I have a clamp here to hold them in place and I can use them. two hands on this at once I'm just going to take a 120 here you go 220 if you're a scratched boat I'm not going to go in here and get all the details all the settings again we're not going to put up with it all We're just trying to scratch it up a little so the priming tool stays this time, you're just going to blow it out of the air compressor, use a back pull and just suck it all up. I'll pass this on to my wife.
She will simply use a damp cloth to remove any excess dust and let it sit for a while. It's pretty cold in here if we want to get to room temperature, but we'll paint them in the basement so you can see we've started sanding. these and now that we have them all in the basement, my wife started priming them and they basically put them on the back or we're painting the back first and then we put two coats of primer on them, we flip it over two coats of primer and then I'll probably let it sit overnight and then paint it tomorrow so you can see, we flip them over or start painting.
We found it's best to use a brush for the corners like you see, see the edges right now and then use a small roller for all of them. flat surfaces and looks quite uniform. You know this is just primer, so it doesn't need to look even yet, but it already looks pretty good. You should also have a lot of good ventilation, so we have our oven. The vents open down here and our garage door opens, try to push out some of the air, so now that we're positioned on the cabinet doors, you're going to want to mount them to the door.
Fortunately I was able to use the previous holes for safes. With a little bit of time, lift up the handle there and a couple of stops, it all came together from the Amazon link I have below, so to put this in there, I'm just going to line it up with the drawer and where it is. meets and then goes up about a quarter of an inch from the rest, now it wants to move to the right as I tighten it, so I actually start a little bit to the left and a little bit more, I'm going to hold this with my knee and do it. glide from this point, it's dolphins and all, here we go.
I have two more screws to put in there and I'm ready. I want to tighten them too much because if I make some liquor, I assure you that there is nothing wrong with having a well. - Soulful cabinet, yes, so we painted the new cabinet there, but what we need to address now is that area where we removed the old cabinet. I was able to use drywall mud and just smooth it out where all the gaps were. are and now we just need to sand it down so we can start the printing process. You have tape around the edge of the cabinets.
Here we have that progress screen ribbon that will be in the description there and I wouldn't do it. Remove this door here because it was too close to the edge, but we still want to paint up there, like thisWe're making pretty good progress. Sometimes you'll want to bring extra light into the room so you can see imperfections. a little better and expect too many shadows when you work near these things, just loosen the plastic and tape around the cabinets that way, if we leak we have a problem that is not really necessary, if you have to stabilize it too, no you do it.
I didn't do that, that was me. I was talking to my daughter and I started painting the ceiling and then I tried to wash it. That looks really horrible now, so we have to paint our ceiling. Yes, my wife is happy about that. Now I'll show you. how to replace a light. So the next thing we did was remove this light. It was a fluorescent bulb and it just didn't look very good. Well at all, so I'm going to replace it with an LED light and so it will probably look like when you take it off the light, you'll probably have two, maybe three wires left, and I can explain how to put one back.
It doesn't take long, you'll need a light screwdriver and maybe a wire stripper. This light was only about $30 on Amazon and it's LED so you should be able to save a little money on energy costs, three wire nuts, two. screws and a light is all we need, so what we have here is we have three wires, there are two here, because this yellow and green is the ground wire and I have some copper in there, that's what you do: connect it . Unless you have a green or yellow wire, but this is just LED light, it doesn't really need ground.
I know some people in the comments will probably count on me saying you need it, but I really don't think it's necessary for just a low power switch like this, but I'm going to add white to white and then red to black. This red one is just a spare wire my grandpa used but it should be black but as long as they have weight for the white I'm fine. and then the black or the red is considered my hot wire that's really what powers it unless you have these screw openings here and what's on the front you just click on it to take it out and the screws go through here, although This house is thirty years old.
I was happy to see that these supplied screws that come with the light are actually going to work with those electrical boxes, so they'll go here and here, so first I have the two white wires. I'll put them next to each other like this and then I'll take the wire nut and they'll go in there together and then you'll just twist it to intertwine the wires so they don't come apart and also nothing will be able to touch it I'm going to do the same thing with my black and red wire another maybe yours probably black and black wire this house is old my grandfather had a way of doing things just to test let's see if it works here oh it works great you should run it through the circuit for this but I have a switch light right here, so I'm just doing that, hey, now I have the right place, yeah, it's a little strange being up there, go okay, look. those screws right there and tighten them tight, you just take these wipes that have these two little tabs that will line up right here and then it closes like this, you can open it, just press it again, turn it on and it works like this.
If you've ever used this fluorescent light and then we had this kind of coverage in this area and then you just don't like the look that it wasn't very clean, this allows a lot more light to come in and I have this light over the sink, it's very helpful knowing that you light up the area where I need to wash some dishes right now so for 30 bucks together like this is an amazing deal go ahead and try it if you enjoyed this video please consider If you like and subscribe you can also check out others projects I have done.
