his mother to colon cancer and his father was a heroin addict odom had a strong relationship with his mother but after her death he would grow up at his grandparents' house where they developed an inseparable bond despite their bad grades and involved in the drug scene at school odom stood out on the basketball court not only enjoyed the sport but it was like therapy for him he played basketball to take his mind off everything else going on in his life and in his senior year of high school he would win the 1997 player of the year parade including first team all-american at this point it was speculated that ue odom would make the jump straight from high school to the nba draft but ultimately c regretted it and decided to attend rhode island to play division 1 ball until 1999 this draft class was one of the strongest at the time odom was a highly touted prospect even some draft analysts compared him to scotty pippen clippers they were rebuilding and they needed a guy like him so with the 4th pick they went with odom the problem was nobody knew what to expect he is so talented so skilled and versatile who can literally do everything on the basketball court, from defending power forwards to running the offense like a point guard, very few players. in the story he had all those skills there was a real chance odum would become the best player in his class and perhaps a perennial superstar in the league the questions and uncertainty centered around his personality and antics off the pitch if odom's head was right place kevin stackhome, a former mavs scout, said if you're going to take a chance on him, you've got to have enough pent-up political will to take that cha Because if you have to think of a sure thing, it clouds your judgement.

He is not a bad boy. He knows he's not mature enough to get into this because of his indecisiveness. He admitted that there is a lot of lack of discipline, that's the scary part, thankfully. all these questions were immediately thrown overboard in his rookie season odum played like everything we expected because of his versatility his defense his ball handling passing scoring they were all there and he could do it all he would average over 16 points almost eight rebounds four assists on a steal and a block and sported the second highest usage rate on the team though the clippers as a whole were still terrible but odom gave the franchise new hope unfortunately maybe he was too good to be true now as a rich young man odom had plenty of money to spend on luxuries and there was an obvious lack of restraint over the next few seasons he didn't improve all that much and instead suffered numerous setbacks including two separate ate nba drug policy violations combined with Their production in decline the Clippers decided to move on in the 2003 offseason they actually had the option to re-sign ar branded elton or re-signed with odom and they chose the brand was the right choice as well in this offseason the miami heat took this opportunity to grab him and pair him with d-wade in miami of all places lamar no he got into trouble and really focused on getting back what he
