multiple ten eight rounds. GSP was then booked to defend the belt against BJ Penn in the highly anticipated rematch at UFC 94 at the time when BJ Penn was the UFC Lightweight Champion, this marked the first champion to obtain his championship belt in the UFC.
BJ was undefeated at lightweight and captured the welterweight belt in 2004, the fight was very close. on paper, especially since the first fight could have gone either way, the first round was very even with both fighters landing with punches and BJ denying all of GSP's bets, but after the first round it was all GSP, from there He started to take BJ down. His will worked into top position and he landed with ground and pound during the end of the fourth round. BJ's corners stopped the fight afterwards. BJ stated that he was standing during the third and fourth Browns and said that he was probably on the verge of being knocked out or something.
The victory came with some controversy after one of GS B's cornerbacks rubbed Vaseline around his body. BJ Penn even stated that GSP felt slippery during the fight, you know I would go on to say that he thought GSP was greased up, but he wasn't. intended to cheat after this controversy, MMA fighters were banned from having Vaseline rubbed on their bodies at this point in their career. GSP was considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in MMA, he was not only beating his opponents, he was destroying them. Each and every one of them, his next challenge was on the UFC's biggest card, UFC 100 against Brazilian striker Thiago Alves.
Alba was coming off a big knockout win against Matt Hughes and many thought he would be the man to derail GSP, but once again GSP dominated. He fought Alves and kept the pace for five rounds winning a lopsided decision at UFC 111. GSP went on to fight British fighter Dan Hardy, dominating Dan Hardy and putting him on his feet and on the ground during the fight. GSP had Hardy in a tight but party armbar. He wouldn't ask later, he had Hardy in the tight Kimura, but the group was able to hold out and escape. GSP won the fight by unanimous decision, but many fans were not impressed with the fact that GSP did not finish the fight as well as GSP was at this point.
At the time he was receiving backlash from MMA fans who were complaining that he never finishes his fights. This became a recurring theme in gs B's career after the tough fight, GSP went on to train the ultimate fighter against Josh Koscheck, the program generated a lot of tension between both fighters. Before his fight at UFC 124, GSP kept the fight standing for five rounds with Cost Jack, effectively using his work to destroy Koscheck late in the fight. Koscheck was completely swollen from all the damage. This fight was very satisfying for GSP. fans because many of them hated Koscheck, especially after the season of The Ultimate Fighter, at this point in his career, GSP began to receive media attention outside of the MMA world.
He Devon's popularity helped Mme break into the mainstream market more. People love GSP not only because he was the best wrestler, but because he was such a humble and respectful person throughout his career, he rarely engaged in trash talk pointing out that he wouldn't be

at it since his English didn't work. he was too

, so he made up for it with dominant performances. GSP was booked to face jiu-jitsu fighter Jake Shields Jake Shields was on a 15-game winning streak and many people believed it was going to be a tough test for GSP. The fight was the main event of UFC 129, the first card in Toronto.
Attendance was a record with over 55,000 people attending this event. The previous biggest attendance was at UFC 124 with just over 23,000 people and that event was also headlined by GSP talking more numbers. GSP put up huge PPV numbers in all of his fights. after 2008 we did over 600,000 buys at this point, that was huge, even now that's huge, there are current champions who can't even make 500,000 buys. GSP is the fight with Jake Shields that turned out to be mediocre with the two staying on their feet for the most part. and GSP stopped Jake Shields from throwing him to the ground.
GSP won by decision, but it was his first fight since the first fight with Matt Serra, where he lost a round after the fight. GSP suffered an ACL injury that forced him to stop fighting. Over a year, this would be the longest layoff in GS B's career and with the circumstances of his ACL injury, many people believed he would never be the same fighter he was and during this time the weight division welterweight was growing up with many of the best. contenders it seemed that G ESPY's days as champion were numbered especially for his upcoming fight against interim champion Carlos Condit.
I have talked about Carlos Condit in other videos before, but I had never talked about him during this time in his career that he was in. In his prime, he had just won against Nick Diaz to claim the interim championship and before that he was booming in the welterweight division, he was knocking out opponents left and right, he also had great cardio and was very durable. He posed a major threat to GSP, who was booked to fight him at UFC 154. The fight was dominant for GSP from the start, he worked on the job and took down Carlos Condit at will at one point in the fight. .
Carlos via a kick to the head and he had GSP. In a big deal, I remember watching this and getting very nervous but somehow GSP recovered and continued to dominate the fight after the fight was very close and that was a big rebound for GSP shortly after GSP was booked to fight Nick Diaz at UFC 158 Diaz. known for his conditioning and boxing was neutralized when GSP took down Diaz at will and maintained maximum control. GSP won a clear unanimous decision, but once again received backlash for not being able to finish the fight at that time. The last GSP finale was four years ago. ago against BJ Penn, even that wasn't a real finish by GSP as BJ's corner stopped the fight, so going back even further, his last finish was his third fight with Matt Hughes in 2007.
Then GSP was Booked to fight wrestler Johny Hendricks, Johnny was cleaning up. He came out of the welterweight division with not only his excellent wrestling but also his knockout power after admitting that he was very nervous for GSP in this fight. GSP has not been known for having the strongest chin and Johny Hendricks has been known to connect with a single shot and Since Hendricks also had a developed ground game, I began to think about how George could win this fight. The first round was competitive with GSP knocking Hendricks down seconds into the fight, but Hendricks also got a takedown of his own and in the second round, Hendricks landed an uppercut on GSP.
His chin is hurt but he can still stay in the fight. GSP comes back in the third round showing off his elite striking and controlling the pace overall. So I would say Hendricks took the fourth round by taking the champion to the ground and working the ground and pound on him. At this point, GSP was a bloody mess and Hendricks looked fresh. Another thing I wanted to add with GSP is that whenever he took damage from his opponents, he visibly showed that he was very prone to getting hurt and cut easily, even if it was just a small attack, this is a little side note that I will come back to. end of the fight and in the final round, GSP was the aggressor by landing a good kick to the body and working in a single GSP also landed a punch that staggered Hendrix, but Hendricks.
I continued with the takedown, well if I got back to my feet, GSP got his own takedown and worked Kimura until the end of the round, I personally gave this round to GSP, but it was very close at the end, George got the win by split decision. but not without controversy Dana White thought that Hendricks had been robbed of the decision. Hendricks went on to say that he thought he beat GSP because GSP looked really beat up and Johnny came out unscathed. Going back to my point that GSP got hurt and cut easily as much as GSP looked bad. defeated the fight, otherwise he was too: going into the fifth round and G ESPY's control of the octagon gave him that last round in my opinion, regardless at the end of the fight when he was giving his post-fight interview, George told the crowd that he would walk me away from fighting for a while as happy as I was for him to win the decision.
He was very sad because he would not be fighting for the foreseeable future. The following month, GSP vacated his welterweight belt. This was abelt he defended nine times. held for five years, it was the end of a rainy day for a welterweight King, to be honest, after this I didn't think GSP would come back at all and I really didn't think he would have; He showed everything he had to prove and established himself as one of the best in the sport, but four years later, GSP announced that he would return, but he would not only return to welterweight but to middleweight to challenge champion Michael Bisping.
The fight took place at UFC 217 in Madison. Square Garden watching GSP fight in 2017 was a surreal experience when he started coming out of the cage, my nerves increased and it gave me that nostalgic feeling I used to get every time GSP came out of his fights. I was especially nervous about this fight because the last time we saw GSP fight was four years ago. What if it wasn't the same fighter? What if ring rust caught up with him and he couldn't handle the attention on the biggest card of the year? I was very against it. into this fight from the beginning because I didn't think GSP had anything left to prove if he lost his fight it would essentially ruin his legacy but after two competitive rounds GSP got a job on Bisping which seriously hurt him at this point he was on top . to my seat and I was screaming, he went on to take Bisping's back where he strangled the champion until he was unconscious, achieving his first final in ten years in 2017 Georges st.
Pierre became the middleweight champion and only the fourth man in company history to become champion in multiple divisions 34 days after GSP vacated the belt due to his colitis, but it was a respected decision by the champion since he did not want to retain him. he moved up the division like some fighters, so this is basically all you need to know about GSP, so let's answer the question how good was GSP. He wasn't good. It was phenomenal. He is a two-time welterweight and one-time middleweight champion. He defended the welterweight against him. Belton nine times in the division that was full of elite fighters and he not only beat his opponents but for the most part did so in a very dominant manner, even when he lost he avenged his losses very decisively, yes he was not acquaintance. as a finisher, but I was very impressed with how he can take fights to five rounds and basically win every round, with some going ten to eight rounds.
GSP was one of the first truly complete fighters in the UFC, his striking was incredible to watch and even though he was not a college fighter, he became one of the best UFC fighters and defeated real NCAA fighters . Most importantly, GSP had a very high fight IQ, he knew the strengths of his opponents and worked against them outside the octagon. He was a very elegant and respectful person, he didn't need trash words to promote a fight because he sold himself as who he was. MMA in Canada is huge because of GSP and it caused a surge of MMA talent in the country as well as Canada.
The whole world became aware of MMA because of GSP. He is the reason why MMA started to be seen as a real competitive sport and not just a sideshow, and the time when fighters were talented in some aspects of MMA. GSP had talent in all of them, this all-round talent. It was the reason he was seen as an athlete and not just a wrestler. He did different training methods, such as gymnastics, to improve as an athlete. On Friday today he trained the same way and that's because of GSP, so when I look back on GSP's career and all that. he has done it for the sport of mixed martial arts.
I would have to put him at the top as the best of all time. My name is Kiana and this was my opinion on how good GSP was. Do you agree, disagree or have anything else to add?
