Here's Why the BMW i8 Is Depreciating Rapidly

May 30, 2021
I'm

here

in Southern California and I think I've rented the most Hollywood car possible, this 2015 BMW i8, other than having four seats, t

here

's very little that compares it to my old 1991 8 Series in Kansas, but there are some similarities. New, this car would have cost up to $150k and when adjusted for inflation, I sold my 1991 850 new for about the same money. Both cars stalled, which was also way ahead of its time, but unfortunately for the i8 it looks like I'll also be sharing the old 8 Series massive depreciation curve. Now when I say massive, it's really appreciating on a par percentage basis. with most other BMW models and European luxury brands, but this seems especially surprising for a car like this one I had that was so hyped.

The styling with its butterfly doors and original fins has certainly caught my eye as I stand here alongside most other exotic cars, but unlike a Ferrari or Lamborghini, this car has depreciated by almost half. of its value in 3 years. Currently on Auto Trader there are 15 of these for sale for under $80,000 and some of them are BMW dealer certified used units, so it's not like all the cheap ones are DS for a supercar to depreciate that much is pretty unheard of. , but The BMW i8 is not a supercar, it was never intended to be in that category and I have no idea what segments it belongs to.

here s why the bmw i8 is depreciating rapidly...

I would say it's more of a sports car as it drives like one, but it's practical with the back seats like a Gran Turismo, but it's not up to par with being a Gran Turismo because they decided to put a 4 cylinder mini-cooper in the rear part to turn it into a Prius-type hybrid. It is also not very comfortable at the original price of the i8. There are plenty of good options for each of those segments, no one would buy this as a sports car because of the Mini Cooper hybrid drivetrain and a new Ford Mustang GT could outperform it, as could almost every high-performance M car in BMW's arsenal, This car is not comfortable. enough to be a grand touring car or something that Mercedes was able to combine perfectly with the performance touch of its AMG GT and all the tech people at Treehugger would skip this car for the more practical and advanced Tesla.

Oh and every car in the Tesla line could kill this, I ate it in a drag race, so no one was really going to pay a hundred and fifty thousand dollars for one of these, but a lot of people rented them for a much lower payment since it was probably expected to hold its value much better than BMW is also heavily discounting these cars to be able to move them, but now that the i8 is three years old the market is being flooded with lease returns, no one in their right mind You would buy for the high residual value listed on your lease and that's why you're seeing the value of these cars drop

rapidly

, so let's say seventy-five thousand dollars.

Is this BMW i8 worth buying? I'm sure you know my answer to telling my story with tech BMWs and that is absolutely yes, yes this car was built to be I have a lot of fun and I'm having a lot of fun playing with it so like I said before this is the most Hollywood car I've ever seen, starting with everyone's introduction, which was in Mission Impossible 4 with Tom Cruise and then you get in this car. and you see the ambient lighting which is an obvious nod to the movie Tron and then you turn this on and it has sound effects straight out of a Michael Bay movie, the autobots assemble now, this cool futuristic startup noise has no purpose other than to let you know the car is on as the engine won't start like a Prius and it's totally fake, there is no electrical hum in these cars, it's totally silent and unfortunately the fake Hollywood part of this car continues and I still have it.
I didn't quite figure out this shifter, but you know, maybe I should do five minutes of research on Google or whatever before driving one of these. Let's give this thing the beans, yes, that sounds pretty good, but it's totally 100% false. Engine noise through the car speakers to make it sound cooler Why invest in an expensive exhaust system when you can just run it through the speakers? Works. I mean, I'm having fun now. I have no complaints about this. Cars 4 and a half seconds from zero to 60, I just don't care at all. I'm one of those guys who really likes to enjoy a car and put it through its gears and hear that red line without being at speeds that send you straight to jail, where most hypercars you can't even legally enjoy anywhere. place.
This car handles very well as you'd expect a BMW to, but it's not an M3 or an M5, and the strange thing about it is that it's actually comfortable. It's kind of a cruiser car, but they made it look like a crazy supercar and that's why I like it, I didn't expect to like it, honestly, I rented this car hoping I could hit it, say this is stupid, the future is stupid and for old cars just to justify my own stupidity, but actually this is a pretty good car. I see it as a really comfortable touring car that has a sporty touch with some practicality.
I mean, it gets good gas mileage. I figure it's the hybrid system and It's one thing being a parent with a five year old, this is a car I could really take her for a ride, there's a back seat and I can put a toddler seat back there and we can ride and have fun, there aren't many. cars that look like that that have so much practicality and I guess I like it for that reason I like it because it's practical what am I saying, good sir, enough? You want old, bad quality cars, you don't want things like this, you want to buy bad quality things.
Cars are not attracted to the dark side. Now I just have one other question about how this car is going to age mechanically when I think about buying one of these if the i8 continues to follow a similar depreciation curve as the new one. 7 that in two years you should be able to get one of these for around $50,000 at five years old, it would still qualify for BMW's certified pre-owned warranty program, so it's not a scary maintenance proposition and it really is a good deal for a car of this type. flashy and fun of course I'm an idiot so I'll probably buy one after that point and end up burying it in the ground in frustration thanks for looking.
