People always have visions and missions and all that, and when people ask me what example should they look at, look what company should be, here's an organization with a vision and a cause. It was founded with a cause, it is an entrepreneurial company. America is an experiment, it's a business venture where a group of people got together and decided that we needed to start our own country because there were certain obstacles that were getting in the way of a vision that we had. of a better kind of country, but a kind of corporate right and they said it from the beginning, all men are created equal and endowed with these unalienable rights, which include

life

, liberty and the pursuit of happiness , and it's not just a competitive statement.

I like to be the best, to be the most respected, that's not what I was and it surprises me how many companies start their visions or missions with that terribly self-centered language, right, it was an ideal and the surprising thing is that we have been good. We have done it and we have done it badly in our history, but it has lasted for over 240 years because fundamentally we believe that we are at our best when we pursue that, but it is an ideal that we will never achieve. All people are equal, but we will die. try and that is the point and it is the same for a company, the true vision within a company is something that has nothing to do with your product, it is an ideal towards which you will try to build and advance that ideal through your company with your product.
here s how to find your purpose in life simon sinek top 10 rules
You will never reach the ideal but you will die trying and this is what gives meaning to our work. This is what gives

purpose

to our lives. The difference between vision and goal is the finish line. A goal is 26.2 miles, you can just count. metrics and knowing when you have completed your goal a vision is having a very clear idea of what the finish line looks like but having no idea how far away it is Wow and it is and the reality is that you will spend your entire

life

never actually crossing the finish line, but the joy that every marathon you complete feels like you are getting closer, every milestone you achieve makes you feel like you are getting closer and closer to the ideal and this is what gives us life in our work.
Which means that success is something difficult to achieve, what is it? And I think it's very interesting that if most people can't define success well, it means you made X amount of dollars or, but if you make X amount of dollars, you spend more, are you successful or? What does it mean that you come home happy every day? Okay, how do you know when you're happy? You know this, so I think success is a funny thing and we all seem to chase it, but we don't know how to measure it or, for that matter, how to define it.
So how do you pursue something that can't be measured? It's fascinating, so when people ask me how success is measured, the question we all need to ask ourselves is: Am I successful? Don't know. I mean, I had a good year last year. And what does that mean? Does that mean I made a lot of money? Does that mean he was very happy? I'll let you decide well maybe neither. I did well last year, but am I successful? and the answer is no, I don't. I'm not sorry because I'm trying to build a world that doesn't exist yet.
I'm trying to build a world where 90% of people go home at the end of the day feeling satisfied with the work they do. I definitely took a step, a big step forward, towards the path, but I'm still very far away, so someone told me, so how do you know if you're successful? and the answer is whether you can do it on your own and therefore it is more. What is interesting to me as a measure of success is not the scoreboards per se, it is not the financial goal or the size of the house you want to buy, although it is good to do it, but those are not measures of success.
It's just good stuff to collect along the way for me it's the drive. I want to measure momentum, which is what you know when something is moving and you start to see it lose momentum. You like it, oh, give it a push because you don't understand. Push. is going to stop and an object in stasis is much harder to start, it requires a lot more energy to start something than it does to keep it running properly, so if you don't let it stop and you can continue, just you know it could still slow down. speed there, but you can do it again much easier and for me the opportunity is to make the ball roll faster and faster and faster and faster and faster and bigger and bigger and bigger and Slyke a snowball and my responsibility. it's because it's not rolling downhill but it's not on auto but I still need to keep it running to

find

that critical mass where it can go and at the point where it can go on its own without me then I'll

find

something else to do and that may not happen in my lifetime I think we all need to stop measuring salaries from promotions and stuff, but instead measure the momentum of your career.
Does my career have momentum? Can I see it moving in the right direction? Can I see it gathering moss? Know? I can see? that it's easy for me it's getting easier to maintain momentum it's getting easier for me to grow the size of this requires less effort that's what we should measure that's what we should keep in mind what is the momentum of our career No It is only the markers that we believe define our success. I did a little experiment with them with a homeless person. It's not like the electrodes with them voluntarily help me because the idea of giving you the right thing, you'll walk down the street and Everyone has seen someone begging and whether or not they've thrown a few pennies into their cup when they feel good, they bought into that feeling that It is a legitimate business transaction.
They know that business transactions are defined as the exchange of consideration. here it was an exchange of consideration, you gave money, you have the feeling of goodwill, you pay for that feeling, if you didn't give money, you either don't feel anything or you feel bad, you can't feel good about not giving, well, you paid for that feeling . So now the question is how does that person encourage us to tell the joke? Do they act like all the corporations in the world? They talk about themselves, meeny-meeny-meeny, like they're sitting there with their little outdoor billboard and it says I'm homeless I'm hungry I have 12 kids I'm a veteran God bless them they've got it all They're trying to attract someone the religious vote the veteran vote you know the child sympathizer surround yourself with lots of pets go for that too, all in an attempt to get something from someone who takes, not gives, all about me, well what corporations do?
We have added more RAM, we have added more rom with more speed, this is number one, we are the biggest. we're the best we've been around since 1969 we're better than them we're faster than them we're more efficient than that me and me me me me me me me me and so even if we buy their product guess what yeah man we don't feel a lot, so I did this little experiment. I found a nice homeless lady on the streets of New York who is willing to help and I learned that from her sign, which was pretty typical, I'm a homeless person.
I'm hungry, remember she makes between 20 and 30 dollars a day, you know, for a day of work, eight to ten hours sitting there selling goodwill products. From 8 to 10 hours she will earn 20 to 30 dollars. $30 is considered a good day. She changed her sign and the new sign made her $40 in two hours and then she left. One of the reasons she is homeless is because she decided that she only needs 20 to 30 dollars a day to live. If she had stayed, she would have made $150. She made 40 dollars in two hours where the signs say if you only give once a month, please think of me next time?
It has nothing to do with who she receives, it has everything to do with who she gives and what the objections are. give when they don't give I can't give to everyone how do I know they really need it? That's why I address both concerns. I know you can't reach everyone so if you only give once a month my cause is legit I'll still be here when you're ready to give 40 bucks two hours do it for them not for you the fact of the matter is 100 percent percent of customers are people and 100 percent of customers are people and 100 percent of employees are people I don't care how good your product is I don't care how good your marketing is I don't care how good your be your design if you don't understand people you don't understand business we are social animals we are human beings and our survival depends on our ability to form relationships of trust.
Have you ever seen Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel you're flipping channels one night and Deadliest Catch came on and in this episode they just randomly were in a big storm now for those of you? those who don't know Deadliest Catch, they take these crab fishing boats to the Bering Sea, which is terrible, and they put cameras on them and we take a good look. The reason I think it's important is because these crab fishermen, I think, are one of the best. The 5 deadliest jobs in the world, you know, I don't know what the exact number is, but dozens of fishermen die every year doing this, apparently we find it entertaining, but in reality it is, they only have cameras on five or six of the boats. although there are a lot of boats that go out fishing every season and they don't really go near each other because you know the oceans are huge and they usually sabotage each other and give each other false information because they are all competitors. everyone is looking to catch the crabs and you know, make sure they find them, someone else doesn't and we've been billed well, it's just a business, okay, we all do the same thing in our own company and in this episode it's so big.
The big storm was so violent that they had to bring all the pots, which are the big cages, where they catch the crabs and they take all the pots to the boat and wait for the storm to pass and, by pure luck, one of the boats that had cameras . In it he was near a boat that didn't have cameras and then they filmed that they had secured all their pots on the deck and then they started filming the other boat and they filmed a guy climbing on the outside of the cage securing the pots and suddenly a huge wave hits the side of the boat and the guys are no longer there and the people in the boat with the camera start shouting Man overboard Man overboard Man overboard and they turn their boat towards where they think it might be a stranger no They know him, they don't know the crew of the other boat and yet they react and turn towards him and find him in the drink and for those who don't understand how dangerous this is.
It's if the water is so cold that if you're in the water for I think it's a minute or a minute 30 you'll get hypothermia and you'll die and they approach him and he screams don't let me die, don't let me die and they put him on board, no. out of the woods but they took his clothes off because it was wet and cold and they wrapped him in blankets to keep the hyperthermia from setting him off and he survived and it's overwhelming and the captain comes down and this is all I'm giving you you can go see him in the television comes your camera the captain comes down and hugs this stranger this young man his competitor hugs this guy if it's his own son I lost him everyone is crying and you realize what happened here was a human interaction and the reason they risked it their own lives to help this other person even though they spend every other day trying to get ahead and sabotaging it is because at the end of the day they are all crab fishermen and know something about each other. each other and know something about the risk they all take in doing this and when the time comes, they will go out of their way to help each other for no other reason than to understand that they are one of the same.
I promise you. that every member of that team that day went home with a feeling of satisfaction. I promise you that every person on that team that day felt more good in their hearts and in their jobs than the richest day they've ever had in my question. What are you doing to help the person next to you? Don't you want to wake up and go to work for the sole reason that you can do something nice for someone else when you want them to do it for you? I am a lover of creative people and any type ofexpression of how you see the world and with different terminology is fascinating to me and, although I am a photographer, I have that visual aspect.
I am a big fan of modern. dancing and I spent a lot of time with dancers and in the dance world and, you know, I tried my hand at choreography just to see, you know, I'm not good, but I like the idea of trying, you know? And for me it's about perspective which is when I when you go out with dancers and you know you learn to dance a little or you learn to choreograph a little or you learn to paint a little, you know I'm not a painter, but I painted a painting recently, you know, You know, if you understand, you know, everything is connected, right?
You know, it's like we conveniently divide our lives, like here's my personal life, my professional life, um, you know, it's my social life. I'm looking for find the balance it's just you you know and all the same things apply so if you're good here you can apply what you learn here there you know and so when you learn how things interconnect and people They connect somehow. human relations working and present I mean you want to learn about presence take a dance class you learn all about how to present yourself and be daring you're going to take an acting class learn how you know present your speech people say Simon how' If you learn this, it's like if I was exposed to everything, so the tools that I've learned have mainly been different perspectives on how other people use their creative talents to see the world and if I can get little snippets of them. help me in many different ways imagine we are standing in a big empty room and we are standing in a corner and I give you a simple instruction.
I want you to go to that corner straight. I hope you have one. big deal, without telling you, I slid a chair in front of you, what are you doing, you go around the chair now, you just disobeyed what I told you to do, I told you to go to that corner in a straight line, but these are the wonderful things about Human beings, when given a clear destination, use our own creativity, our own sense of innovation, and our own problem-solving skills to overcome obstacles and reach the destination; In other words, the destination is more important than the correct route.
We are flexible with the route We are obsessed with the reset of the destination We are standing together in the corner and I give you a simple instruction go somewhere in this room in a straight line and say well, where do you owe me? Understand, I'm like, I don't know, you're smart, figure it out, go straight and then you pick a point and you start walking and without telling you I put a chair in front of you and what do you do? stop abruptly let's say would you stop to go? Will you put a chair in front of me? or you will make a sudden turn. go in another direction, right? and this is the problem, it is the same obstacle, the difference is when you have a clear set at clear destination, obstacles become easy to overcome when you do not have a clear destination, you keep reaching a dead end and what we do in our companies is counting the steps we are taking along the way. route, but we never took a good look at the destination, the company has made a million dollars this year, we were only planning to make eight hundred thousand, where we took ten steps, you plan to take eight, where are you going?
I have no idea, right? we count the steps and the point is that people want to feel that the effort they are exerting is really moving somewhere and that is why successful measurement successful recognition is not just by the steps you take it is not just by the effort but it is The effort you made brought us closer to where we are trying to get to and that getting there should be a crazy ideal. My ideal is to live in a world where the vast majority of people wake up every morning and you know they inspire you to go. job and satisfied with the work that they do and the couple of measures that I use is whether the book is selling and by the way, people ask me how many have you sold.
I have no idea. I never asked the publisher because I don't care, I don't really care how many I've sold, what I care about is the Amazon rankings and that they are stable or going up and not plummeting because that means other people are right because I don't have a publicist. I don't have a marketing strategy on

purpose

. I did not hire one of those companies to sell the book for me and the reason is that I am not interested in selling books. I'm interested in spreading an idea, so just use it as a metric to help me understand if I'm kind of marketing because the more I preach it resonates, you know, you have a couple of these imperfect measurements that help you understand if you're on track to let it not just be great effort look at what you achieved because that is what we are doing now, our goal is to increase top line revenue by 50 million dollars, for what reason, we have to know the destination and then we say incredible, you took us so much. closer if we go to the right it is because we were overcoming an obstacle if we had not gone to the right we would have been stuck forever thank you know they are not always straight lines they are not always straight lines but it is in one direction she is playing We are rarely experts instant.
You may have a particular gift or affinity toward something, but you still improve. You know people praised me a lot when I started speaking and then people who saw me a year or two later say that. I'm even better and I'm sorry because you learn more, you know. I think arrogance is dangerous. I think you are an expert and that anything is a foolish search. You're never that good. As you could be, there is always room for improvement, there is always room for improvement. You know that means you have to listen to all the advice. You just know that not necessarily everyone knows what is best, but believe that you can be better and believe that.
You can offer more is a constant search. You know, I used to think that being a public speaker meant being prepared and presenting in a compelling way and speaking at the right pace and that's part of it, but I've been taking more risks. Lately I do things that are very unstructured and very uncomfortable and now I will do that if I have an hour to talk, I prefer to talk for 20 minutes and ask 40 minutes of questions and who knows how it will go. It is the best and that is why I am a better speaker because now I am much more open to the unknown, something that a few years ago would have scared me.
Dopamine is the feeling that you find something you are looking for or that you achieve something. you set out to achieve so you know that feeling you get when you cross something off your to-do list which is dopamine it feels amazing you know when you have a goal to achieve and you achieve it you say, yes, you feel like it you have gained something true which is dopamine the purpose of dopamine is to ensure that we do things right the historical reason for dopamine is that we would never eat if we just waited to be hungry because there is no guarantee that we will find it food, so dopamine exists to help us look for food, We get dopamine when we eat, which is one of the reasons we like to eat, so when you see something that reminds you of something that makes you feel good, we want to have the behavior that helps us achieve that. that feeling is right so let's say you're out for a walk and you see an apple tree in the distance you get a little bit of dopamine and then what it does is we focus on our goals and now we start walking towards the apple tree and we make the apple tree starts to grow a little bit more, we feel like we're making progress, you get another little shot of dopamine and another little dopamine from shallot until you get to the Train, you say, yeah, okay, this is why you're told you should write your goals.
Your goals should be tangible. There is a biological reason for that. We were very, very visually oriented animals. You have to be able to see the target to keep it biologically focused. If you don't write Write down your goals if you can't see them, it's very difficult to motivate yourself to get inspired, for example, think about corporate visions, right? A corporate vision has to be something we can see well, that's why it's called a vision, you can see it well. being the biggest most respected being the fastest growing they are not visions they are not correct at all what does that look like respected by whom your mother yourself your friend your shareholders who knows what the metric is I don't know, it's Amorphis doesn't motivate us just as if I couldn't tell you you'll get a bonus if you achieve more you're going to ask me how much more I'm going to say more it doesn't work you need a tangible goal you need a tangible goal here you have a great vision Martin Luther King I have a dream that one day black children white children play together on the playground and holding hands we can imagine that we can set our sights on that and every time we reach a goal and achieve a metric and achieve a milestone that makes us feel like we are progressing towards the vision that we can see, We keep going and going and going until we achieve something extraordinary, you have to be able to see it, dopamine, like I said, dopamine is the feeling you get when you set out to find something you're looking for, I also talked about the bucket list.
I came home from a trip just a couple of days ago and had a bunch of errands to run and wrote a little list of things. I had to do it and I went to the right and as I passed I thought about the dry cleaners I remember I was going through something I remembered Who I have to do that I hadn't written it down on my I hadn't written it down on my to-do list so I went into that's what I had to do and then when I got out I wrote it on my to do list and then I crossed it off because I wanted the dopamine field.
Good dopamine comes with a warning. dopamine is highly addictive here are some other things that release dopamine alcohol nicotine bet your cell phone oh you think I'm kidding okay we've all been told you know if you wake up in the morning and feel like a drink you might be an alcoholic Well, if you wake up in the morning the first thing you do is check your phone before you even get out of bed, you could be an addict, if you walk from room to room in your own apartment holding your phone, you could be an addict. when you're driving in your car and you get a text and your phone beeps, we hate email, it's true, we love the rhythm, the buzz, the ding, oh right, you'll be there in 10 minutes and you still have to look at it well.
Now you could be an addict and even if you read it and it says, are you free for dinner next Thursday? and you have to respond right away, you can't wait the 10 minutes, you might be an addict and oh for all Gen Y is out there. Who likes to think that you're better at multitasking because you grew up with technology? So why do you keep crashing your cars when texting? You are no better at multitasking. In fact, you might as well distract yourself. if you look at the statistics, ad D and ADHD have a diagnosis of ADD, D and ADHD have increased by 66% in the last 10 years, well, ad D and ADHD is a frontal lobe disorder, TRUE?
Are you telling me out of nowhere that 66% of our youth have frontal lobe problem where did that come from no its a misdiagnosis what are the symptoms of a dopamine addiction? to technology distraction inability to do things easily easily distracted you know lack of attention it's all the same so we misdiagnose things it's this is the addictive quality of dopamine we can also become addicted to performance in our companies when everything we they do is give us numbers to hit numbers to hit numbers to hit and a bonus you get and a bonus you get and a bonus you get the only thing they are doing is feeding us with dopamine, we can't help ourselves, all we do is want more, more MORE, it's no surprise that the bank destroyed the economy because one of the things we know about dopamine addicts is that they will do anything to get it. another blow sometimes to the sacrifice of their own resources and their relationships and the alcoholic gambler or drug addict asks them how their relationships are going and if they have wasted any of their resources it is an addiction dopamine is dangerous if it is unbalanced it is It is very helpful when it is a comfortable and balanced system, but when it is unbalanced it is dangerous and destructive.
There is a brilliant leader named David Mark Hey who wrote a book called Turn the Ship Around and had experience as a submarine captain on the USS Santa. It was where he realized that as much as he knew about submarines, he knew it had been a submarine or his entire career that he put this new submarine, he learned the hard way, they didn't really know how to work on submarines, he made an order that no one He knew how to do it because there was something that didn't exist on that submarine and then he realized that he had no choice but to trust his people and he went through this transformation as a leader, telling everyone what to do and allowing the people to say it.
I told him what to do and I learned a lot from him and I highly recommend his book and I really learned what you know at the top of the organization, like David says, people have all the authority, leaders have all the authority. authority, but deep down they have all the right context, so you can't just push all the context up,you have to push authority down, so the responsibilities of leadership are to train people, make sure they have the skill set to help build. their confidence that they have the confidence to do what needs to be done, you have to have the right competence and confidence and that that is your job, the only job of the leader does it like a father, he makes sure that they have competence and confidence , you know, make sure your kids go to school and make sure they believe in themselves and then let them, you know, and that's why I've done the same thing instead of showing it. people how would I do it, I want them to learn how it's done, know how and feel good about themselves and then as they do it, this is how they do it, yeah, you know, and the result is extraordinary.
People feel better coming to work. like they have something to contribute, they feel more valuable rather than just being told this is how I would do it or I'll do it this way or I'll do it my way, so yeah, I'll completely change my understanding of my job as something more. similar. "A parent that a manager has had a remarkable impact. It's easy to push things back. It's very hard to speed things up. I'd rather start with something that's too big and make it happen again, then start with something that's so easy that you can ". I don't really get it, for example, you know, don't set your goals realistically, set them completely unrealistically.
I mean aiming for 80 and being disappointed when you reach 70 instead of aiming for 20 and being ecstatic when you reach 21, we surpassed our goal, yes. but it was logo, you know, I think I think that being frustrated and achieving something instead of being ecstatic and achieving less is a better way to live, not to mention your team, or so I firmly believe that the greater good is like those things what's up. They're so big they're ridiculous, I mean, like you know my goal is 100, your goal is called world peace. I know it's discouraging, you know, but that's the idea, if I fail and I certainly won't in my life.
I'd like to do it. I think what I'll contribute to that ridiculous, meaningless, idealistic goal is more than if I said can I be happy alone in my little house, you know well, I mean, that's nice and all, but I like the idea of contributing to your Neighbor , you also talk to companies, leadership teams, employees and stuff without mentioning names, and I want to put you on the spot, but have you gone and talked to a company that's been in trouble and then talked to their team and then verified? Get to know them after you've talked to their leadership team and what was that like?
Did you notice a noticeable change? Did they come to you and say this has helped our organization? Our culture has improved a lot because of that, you mean? does my job, I mean, sure here's the problem with myself, you have to do it and I don't, I'm no one like, you know, mom or dad, I'm not going to do it for you and I have a much less fair approach. I had a one-sided client once, this was a bunch of years ago, and he said, what guarantee do I have that your stuff will work? My answer was none like me.
I'm giving you a tool that you can like a hammer that you can use. In general or narrow terms, you can build a table, you can build a house, it is the same tool you can use for marketing, if you use it, I will completely revitalize your entire culture and although I am going to sell you the most beautiful hammer, I will not . I'm going to guarantee the structural integrity of the house, right, it's your business, you want to ignore all my stuff, ignore it, I don't care, it's yours and if your business collapses, you know what happens to me, nothing like that, I don't want to be cold .
In this regard, of course I want the people I work with to do well, but it's not mine, it's theirs and I don't take any emotional responsibility, but rather the decisions they make, so yes, there are many people I've worked with. had the pleasure of working, some of which I work for dysfunctional organizations that took the difficult journey of completely changing the way they lead and completely revitalizing their culture and have great success, it's not because of me, it's because of them, to the At the same time, there are many people who came like everyone else. of an incredible speech and I didn't do anything you know, thank you, that was great, you know and no, of course it's going to fail, so I think we have too much, especially in the consulting world or the design world, they're all so paternalistic about it. and designers are famous for this right, they get personally offended when the client chooses the wrong thing through six videos, yet they know we're trying to help them or who cares, like it's their damn business, right, that's what you find I've had that.
Instead of arguing with someone to get them to choose the right option, because we really want to help them, what I have found is that if you push responsibility, it is because when we argue, we take responsibility, this is better, this will help you, we are taking responsibility responsibility , but if we say look, we've been doing this for many years, we know more about design than you. I'm telling you for all the reasons I can describe to you why this will help you the most, but if you don't want to do it, that's fine, it's your business, do what you want the moment you shift the responsibility and put everything on them.
Surprisingly, they are much more open to your opinion because they are now responsible. Thank you all so much for watching. I made this video because I need to ask myself if there is someone you like on a profile in the top ten. Check out the link in the description and go ahead and vote. See you soon, the greatest measure of humanity. bullies working together none of us can solve complex problems alone none of us can lift a heavy weight alone we can't build great things alone but when we learn to cooperate and trust each other and share what we know with each other, we work together and we can solve the most complex problems build the most notable things and leave the heaviest weight behind so definitely cooperation and trust what I learned is that I don't have to know all the answers and if I don't know them, I don't know them.
I have to pretend to take the opportunity to ask others for help and admitting when we don't know things and even admitting when we make mistakes means that people will rush to help us and will be there to help us if we claim to know things. The answer is that we hide the mistakes we make so people will think that things are fine and then they will leave us alone and it's not that people don't want to help us, they say it's that they don't know when they can. I wake up. every morning with a very clear sense of purpose is to inspire people to do what inspires them so that together we can change our world and I have a very clear vision of the world I want to live in.
I would like to live in a world where the vast majority of people wake up every morning inspired to go to work, feel safe when they are there and return home at the end of the day satisfied with the work they do and I have committed all my work . and it doesn't matter what form it takes in speaking or writing or teaching or advising or it doesn't even matter what form it takes in any way to help advance that vision and bring us closer and closer to it and to my friends. They're my allies, you know we're part of an army that's trying to build together, that's why I come to conferences like this, it gives me a pulpit to share that vision in the hopes that some of the companies in the room will. start changing the way they least see what they are doing and change the way they do things because I'm just a preacher that's all I am unless companies really affect change my vision will never be done reality and so Well, I know, so it's going to take a lot of us and we all play a different role, we all play pieces of a puzzle and of which I am just one person.
