Have I been wrong about the Porsche 996?

Jun 09, 2021
Well, by show of hands, who here at some point was not a fan of the 996 generation of the 911? Yeah, okay time to confess, I was, I hated when the 996 came out. I felt like Porsche had thrown away one of the most critical elements of the 911's design. The DNA that was being the focus now history has told us there was a Lots of reasons for them to do that and at the end of the day it doesn't even matter, I think the 996's position in the history of the 911 is really fantastic now. Tomorrow I will drive this 996 and see if I can put the final nail in the coffin of the prejudice I

have

always felt towards it.

Now before we talk about that, I'm going to post a lot of Porsche content. I want to make sure you don't miss anything from the channel, so hit the subscribe button below somewhere here and the notification button so you know when the content comes out anyway. Let's post that intro Hello gang, welcome to the channel. My name is Andy. Well, behind me is my friend's 996. It's a 1996 generation. Now he'll tell you that when he bought the car, it was very much a dentist spec. However, since he bought it he's set out to change that focus to something much more purposeful, a car that you can hammer up the hills through the corners and

have

a ton of fun and he's done a beautiful job rather than chasing horsepower upgrades. of strength, he really likes the improvements in handling, suspensions, sway bars, wheels, tires, all those cool things that make it a car that you can carry momentum and he has also set out to change the look of the car by making cosmetic modifications that really They have given it additional presence on the road.

More Interesting Facts About,

have i been wrong about the porsche 996...

It could almost be the perfect 911. Okay, I said it almost perfectly, as you may have. I assumed this car was a tiptronic, a dump truck. Now I have to confess that in the past I think I have probably

been

a little critical of the tiptronics and certainly had some level of prejudice towards those who would buy one. After all, why would you buy it? An automatic when you can buy a manual and spend your time rowing through the gears has to be more fun. Well, I can tell you that the owner of this car is the most hardcore Porsche enthusiast you will ever meet.

Now I can too. I'm telling you, he takes the wheels off this thing and the question is, is it any good? Well, yeah, it's really good, it's fantastic. You get over the tiptronic thing and there's a really simple reason for that and it's because the owner has made a bunch of modifications to this car that make it corner like it's on rails. The steering of this car is an absolute revelation. I can't tell you how good it really is, just fantastic, so what he's done is instead of chasing horsepower like a lot of people do. He has tried to make the car corner and handle better and he has done a fantastic job.

The car runs well. Sports shock absorbers. I must say that they are quite rigid. They crash a little in places but work great. It's in Eibach. Lowering Eibach springs and sway bars and that combination works very, very well, but then he also combined it with these beautiful Oz racing wheels and two Michelin Pilot Sport tires and the combination works incredibly well. Um, it's a revelation to me the feeling. of the steering is straight to the cart, it is absolutely special, the other thing that really adds to the impressive handling of this car is the way the cabin is set up.
It has these fantastic Recaro pole position seats that hold you up incredibly well. They are very comfortable   um a little more upright than I'm used to but that might be something you adjust to and then it fits a momo mod 7 steering wheel anyone who has seen my channel before knows I really love the momo mod 7 steering wheel, I just think it has the perfect platter and again that translates to a little more steering feel and certainly the reduced diameter of this wheel compared to the stock wheel again adds to the feeling of directness. I think the handling of this car is its absolute trump card so let's talk about the elephant in the room so the tiptronic is good like it's not brilliant right it's not a pdk and it's certainly not a manual and the way you have to drive it it's just being a little more thoughtful about your shifts because it doesn't react with the quick response that you get from, say, the pdk while I'm upshifting, I shift for a moment maybe a second half a second before I really want the car to shift, but it still right foot buried and that way it takes its time to determine what it's going to do and then it changes, it still gets up and dances, it still goes um, the other thing that the owner has done to this car, which I think What makes a big difference to how enjoyable the tiptronic is to use is that it has actually installed some aftermarket shift paddles, so instead of having to use the ridiculous buttons that Porsche insisted on installing in their cars for so long, you can use A shift paddle and shifting paddles makes shifting these types of gearboxes much more enjoyable.
I put paddle shifters in my 991 for exactly that reason, so what my friend Allen has built into this car is a fun, fun, highly performance focused car, and you know, the tiptronic thing, it would be my first choice. No, it would be my second option. No, it would have a manual every day of the week and it would have a pdk, but by purchasing a tiptronic the owner of this car was able to get a ton of vehicle features and condition and low prices. Miles you just felt you couldn't achieve by buying a manual, you drive without brakes, you have a great time and I can tell you that, having always

been

somewhat dismissive of the Tiptronic, you can buy a Tiptronic and still have a great time. and that's the bottom line with this car, so two questions for me from this: would I buy a 996, yes absolutely?
And I was one of the haters, but honestly, if you hate 996, get over it. These things, it's a 911, it's a killer car, so yeah, 996. I'm 100 on board, a big fan. Can you have fun on a tiptronic and can you enjoy it on the hills? The answer to that, in my experience with this car, is an absolute resounding yes, you can more than have the Porsche 911 Experience even in a station wagon anyway. Many thanks to my friend Allen for lending me this car and letting me drive it for a few days. It's been a hoot and like I say, I'm going to dream about this direction and Thank you so much as always for watching, I really appreciate it, thank you so much, hit the like button, hit the subscribe button, hit the subscribe button notification and leave a comment.
