Mar 12, 2022
hi guys welcome back to

furniture

flip

ping teacher and welcome to the new workshop this will be our first

flip

ping in our new workshop. I got this piece for fifteen dollars in

goodwill

. I know fifteen bucks actually I put this on my Instagram to see if you guys thought I got it or not and several of you have reached out to you and said wow how do you get such great prices? Well this was actually listed much higher and then I don't know why but after a few days it stuck. going down so i got a bit lucky and found it when i was only 15 so the only unfortunate event that happened is there was actually a mirror that was attached to this unfortunately when i was transporting it i left the mirror and the corner came off and I won't be able to use the mirror but that's ok I'm not going to stress because this dresser is still very very beautiful and I can't wait to put some

paint

on it to bring it back to life we are so o I am very happy to have the opportunity to work in this workshop and we are very excited to bring them with us and it is thanks to you and your support that we can continue to flip and do things we love. go ahead and do the first step and I'm going to go ahead and remove the hardware and then we'll start cleaning up so that this hardware is absolutely beautiful, so I'm going to remove it and put it in this container. because I'm definitely going to reuse it, it's a little worn and worn, so we're going to spray

paint

it.

I'm not sure about the color, I'm going to spray paint it yet, so when I find

furniture

especially. when it comes to solid wood like this you always want to look for a mark and usually if there is a mark it will be on the back or in the top left hand corner of the side and that is particularly kent brown and that is a wood mark furniture I've heard of f before when I'm reselling this I'll be sure to capture that in a photo so people know it's well made furniture and they can even go and look up this company if they fancy something else that comes along as well with knowing the brand is that i can go and do some research before i list it for my price and i can see what this furniture could sell for as is or in a little better condition and then i can base my price on that as well, all the correct hardware is off and i'm going to set it aside before i get to it and i'm going to go ahead and clean the piece, i'll just use a little bit of dawn dish soap. go ahead and clean and clean this vanity and this is a degreasing cleaner you just want to basically make sure it has that degreaser it's not going to be the mildest but you can also use various other products and we're going to go ahead and clean the piece because we want to make sure that all that dust and dirt and oils and things like that are gone before we put the paint on that way the paint can stick to the piece itself instead of sticking to the dirt or grime left on the dresser and not only do we want to clean the outside so the paint will stick but we also want to clean the inside because this just has a lot of dust on it and if I'm going to sell this I want someone to have a fresh start I don't want any dust on there if they ever get it out the drawers i would like it to be clean in there like it is a piece that is in my house so along with cleaning we are going to see that dirty water we also want to go ahead and make sure that we also have the soap scum and soap scum of sunrise on the dresser or else the paint will stick to that instead of the dresser, so we still need to go ahead and rinse our dresser too, agree? we have another step to go a couple more steps to go before we can actually put some p on it's not on our dresser it's not as simple as just cleaning and applying paint you have to make sure you do the prep work right this surface is very , very shiny and therefore the paint probably won't stick to the surface very well, so I'm going to do some sand scraping and then I'm also going to fill in some gouges with some wood putty, so that's my next step i'm going to grab my sander and sand some of the minor blemishes and then figure out where i need to put the wood filler on some of those more severe blemishes ok we're ready to sand i have 120 grit and I'm going to use my surf prep sander and again I'm just making sure to remove those minor blemishes and then figure out where I might need to do some wood filler on those older gouges. deep ok i finished with the scraped grit and then as you saw i kept going up to the top two drawers and i went down to the bare wood i loved the grain of the wood so i kept going and it's so nice and smooth so i thought this would be a really cool accent to the color i chose so these will be the top two drawers and those will be the bare wood if i don't end up liking it then i can always paint over these too I'm going to go ahead and take my microfiber cloth and remove all the dust and then there's just some ridges and corners that I have to fix. with my wood filler ok I'm going to use the plastic wood x I used this a lot at first when I started flipping and then mine dried up so I never got a new one but now I have a smaller one so I don't It doesn't dry but I like this stuff oops because it's pink but then it dries to a natural wood color so that's cool it changes color so you know when it's dry the first little spot I'm going to be filling and repairing is this corner here it's not too damaged but i've rebuilt a corner with this plastic wood x before and that's k Besides what i'm going to plan to do here again this one isn't as bad as the other one i had repaired, but basically I'm going to get a little more than I need because I want it to be above the surface that way, when I go to sand everything down, I make sure to get it flush with the rest of the piece of wood to help the corner back to normal and then I'll check and see there's something a few gouges and sometimes you may have to go back after your first coat of primer or paint and fill in some gouges that you may not have recognized before you put something in and that's only part of it because you know there are a lot of gouges and they're just smaller so sometimes it's a little harder to see but I'm going to fill in as many gouges as I can and then we'll sand them back down once this is all dry okay I think we've got them all filled in like i said it can go crazy if you try to fill the whole hole but we're going to let it dry for now and then we'll go back with some sanding and then we'll paint the wood filler it's had a bit of time to dry and it's all back to that natural color so that means we know it's dry I'm just going to take a sanding block and go ahead and sand everything down so everything is flush and then I'm going to wipe down with a microfiber cloth as well so all the wood filler is sanded down back s and is sanded smooth so we are ready to paint.

More Interesting Facts About,

goodwill furniture flip with fusion mineral paint...

I haven't shown you what paint I'm using. I'm going to take it and I think they'll be excited. I'm going to use

fusion

ore. paint again and last time i used it i had a lot of requests to use midnight blue and i can never turn down a good blue especially a good navy so im excited to try a color instead of just white with the

fusion

mineral

paint with this paint you dont need to use a primer or top coat its built in too so its an all in one paint again i can never turn down a good all in one paint so especially since this is a color dark i'm good at using primer and if i wasn't using an all in one paint i would definitely want to use a primer because i would probably be bleeding a bit with all the spots i ended up sanding down to finish but we'll try and test the all in one qualities of the

mineral

paint fusion so I'm going to use my Zebra Palm Pro brush for this flip and I love how it fits right in my hand and Zebra has many different styles of c epillos so if you don't like the smaller ones you might as well get the longer grip ones too whenever you're painting you just want to make sure it's going in one direction it's not going in all different directions because that's going to make it dry a little crazy and it doesn't look very even you know when you're using paint unless you're using a self leveling paint then you're going to have some sort of brush stroke so one thing to keep in mind is if you're going to have brush strokes you probably want that going in the same direction so that's another reason to keep that one way ok first coat is all done and i love the way this paint glides right on and has amazing coverage like i said I think part of that is because it's such a dark dark blue but I'm loving it so far so we're going to let the first coat dry and we're going to start on the hardware okay so these pieces of hardware I rec resemble brass knuckles for some reason but they are very unique and that's why I want to keep them and that's why I'm going to use the krylon metallic gold leaf you know this is my favorite gold so far that I've found and I'm just going to give you a couple light layering to bring it back to life so that's okay the first layer is done and then once that's dry I'll flip them back over and do the other side as well and then do a top layer let's go back inside, the first coat is dry, so I'm going to lightly scrape and go ahead and do it right over the top to smooth out the paint before the second coat, um, okay, the second coat is on. now that's the last one we'll do it's got amazing coverage especially with that second coat it gave it a much better coat and it's really coming together because I can tell there's nothing jumping through any color no more red popping up and I can't wait to see what the gold will look like again.

I haven't decided yet if I'm going to like the wooden drawers on top with the gold and blue or if I'm going to finish. I'm painting those so just in case I made sure to store my brush inside us inside a ziploc bag but now our job is just to wait for it to dry and head back to more hardware ok here we go we're done. to put this back together i'm going to go ahead and improve the slides here on the dresser side and on the drawers so they slide out a little easier and i'm going to do that with dixie bells big mama's butta in suzanne's garden and this is a really cool thing it's basically like butter and some kind of wax too so I'm just going to take my brush and rub it along those wooden parts there in the drawer and then go ahead and do it again here on the rail inside the dresser that's going to smooth everything out and I'm going to just go ahead and do that to all of these here.

We have some bird friends here and Nina doesn't like it at all, so if you hear the birds, that's what it is, they're in the rafters, right? and then um While I'm putting the drawers in, I'll go ahead and put the hardware in and make sure I put this on the bottom of each drawer as well, so we'll go ahead and put this hardware back just the way it came and I did. i ended up putting that top coat on there also off camera i did a satin gloss so it has a little bit of shine but not too much it's all good so i decided to go ahead and put some wallpaper on the top two drawers just the base of the drawer here and I don't know I just wanted to add a little bit of color on the drawer since this is raw wood I also wanted to tie up that gold so I went for this kind of peel and stick wallpaper the only thing about these drawers is that they're actually crooked but they're supposed to be that way so if you can see it just tilted so in the middle the drawers go in nice they stick out in the middle but go in very slightly on the sides so it's a little little sloping i dont know its not a perfect rectangle is the moral of this story and that will be a bit tricky when i put this wallpaper but lets just go with the flow and try it ok ok ok here we go i cut it these were 24 and a half to inch so that's what I cut them to be you can find this wallpaper peel and stick on amazon a and I'll also link it below in the description it's well done I'm going to go ahead and place this drawer out of the way and to that we can see if we're going to like it with the wood all true I love raw wood even with the gold and I think you know not making the gold a matte gold really helps the hardware stand out but it's also great to be a little understated at the top here but you can still see the uniqueness of the hardware below i'm going to go ahead and seal this wood with the same big mama butter from suzanne's garden this is so much simpler to use and manipulate so i have never personally used it as a top coat but i know you can and i am excited to go ahead and try it on these two drawers.
I'm just going to stretch them out a bit and then hit the town. This will darken the wood a bit. but we need to seal it and basically any sealer that they put on the wood is going to darken a little bit because it's absorbing it, butit will also freshen it up and i think it will honestly make it look a lot better, ok that's an end on this piece. you guys the only thing moving into the shop so fast is we don't have a stage wall yet we're going to build one and make a video about the stage wall but that won't be for a couple of weeks probably because like You know we have a lot of things planned in July so it's probably going to be an August project that we're going to do with what we have and on the other side of the wall in front of me in the second half of the workshop we have a little office area with leaning kitchen and one of those walls is blank and has a nice floor in front of it so we're going to bring this up it's not ideal but it's going to work and we can also show you how you can bring a piece into your house ma maybe , if you don't have that stage wall, then Neiman and I will bring it inside and do some photos for the staging, okay, we brought our same stage props here to the new shop, so I'm going to go. go ahead and stage this just and i know you can see some stuff here on the wall not the most attractive wall we have a little bit of an advantage because neiman is a photographer and you can take that into photoshop and get rid of that stuff up there we never mess with the look of the part, but anything in the background can be removed, so that's what it'll do in post-processing: it'll remove that, it'll remove some of these other holes and things like that, so if you're good at editing, too you can do that maybe if your wall has a few things but i'm going to throw a lamp in here again just a really simple staging today i just think the simpler it can be sometimes the more it accentuates the piece its pixie and how it looks so i really want to make sure that people who are looking at this realize and understand that this is real wood here and this is just blue and gold and it's really beautiful even without having a bunch of stuff on top of it like í we're going to go ahead and take some pictures and we're going to list this on the facebook marketplace to sell it after i get it for 15 i'm going to go ahead and list this for probably around three hundred and four hundred bucks it's solid the wood is a very nice piece , no issues with it, drawers slide in and out, awesome, it also shows some real wood, so it reminds me of a few other flips I've done and similar style but also similar quality, I've been able to getting top dollar prices for that and as I go on and on doing this with furniture I know I can gauge my market and I can tell what they enjoy and maybe what they don't so that's what I'm going to list it on so far I haven't gotten such a sale, but I've had an enquiry, so fingers crossed that it turns into a sale here soon.
This was a really fun change and it was a great first change in our new shop and so if you're interested in more details on this, like when it sells, what types of paint I use and all that stuff that can be found on Instagram, we would like to update them there when our parts sell if they don't. sell for youtube videos follow us on instagram at furnitureflippingteacher we would also love you to be a part of our community hope you enjoyed watching this video i am so glad i took several of your recommendations when using the color midnight blue i am a big fan of colors darker blues so I'm very pleased with the outcome of this vanity so if you'd like to continue our journey of furniture flipping be sure to follow us and subscribe below give us a thumbs up comment below if you've tried midnight blue fusion mineral paint Or you know I'm always open to more colors, I liked using this paint, so what color should I use next?
