Good Video Game Console Logos | indiejacobFeb 21, 2022
just dont do them like that ever again hey jacob austin dude i need you to come over now yeah its all
gooddude im at another one of my sons soccer
games and can you believe there are people here that dont know theres an arrow in the fedex logo go go son it's alright austin i'm on my way alright Are they on oh hey did I just text you? out of the way here if you have been a viewer of my channel for a while now you know jacob likes a
goodlogo or three there is something i find so fascinating about these things either its the shape or there is a deeper meaning behind it from this or your use of color or typography i really like saying that word its like my mom works in a bank and has this inescapable love for her financial health sorry bob i wish that i shared that same love but sometimes guys just have to buy three change papers so last time i talked about logo design here we covered the bad
logosof the gaming industry so this time if i'm accepted i think i'd like to talk about some of the good guys graphic design is a big part of my life it's what I do for a living it's what I like to talk about and sometimes I secretly love to passionately judge companies that use Comic Sans on their logo just because now its T I am being passive-aggressive As I said before, the
gameindustry is also affected by good
logosand strong marketing.
Most consumers usually decide in about five seconds whether they like a product based on its visual identity or not because humans are quite visual by nature. Color theory is great. whenever it comes to logo design you see companies like in the medical field and it always seems like they love to use the color blue I mean we've all seen this well they use the color blue because they're trying to evoke a feeling of tranquility and care every time you look at it because that is what they want you to think and not the jack of two thousand dollars that the grinder is going to give you since they took out five stitches from your eyebrow because your brother hit you on the head with a putter once yeah in case you were wondering if that happened anyway let's talk about some logos now nintendo usually has a pretty solid logo design with their
consoles and their handhelds i mean yeah for every logo from nintendo ds there's a virtual kid logo sitting in the background crying but thanks to them we've seen some really amazing artwork like now personally jacob's favorite nintendo logo is this oh i love it how bright and happy and wonderful this color scheme is on this and i just feel like an old friend calls me on the phone and says hey jacob let's get your big hairy ass over here and play some mario kart 64. now even though that's one of my personal favorite logos of theirs it's not their best logo this is their best logo the nintendo wii nintendo's best selling home console of all time and it's definitely not attributed to the fact that it sounds like a little boy calls the thing between his legs guys I don't know if you already know but this logo is pretty awesome the spacing between the letters is like scientifically executed I mean what's that like 40 pixels between each of them oh my gosh that's a great kerning and I love the way they use color in the tagline because it's not that common so let me explain color theory it's a very interesting concept to me as I spoke briefly about this a while ago, but basically it's a set of rules that shows how we as humans perceive color, so for example, green is often used with products that tend to be associated with nature, beauty, or health;
They use this color to bring a sense of vitality or energy to the consumer, so it usually puts you in a good mood when you look at it. ng to their products is also the reason why every fast food restaurant in the United States likes to shove their logo somewhere because red has been shown to make your tummy full of hunger every time you stare. for long enough is also why i get a little surprised every time i drive by a culver you usually dont see companies like this pick something like gray for their logo because its commonly associated with boredom so im a little surprised nintendo said hey yeah go ahead and all that color just bust it out. because who cares about emotions but when you step back and really look at it gray is also a really good color for tech companies because it provides this as a clean blank slate to work on so in this case nintendo decided i pair this color with a simple name aka the wii we would like to play can you guys get off my porch?
This is the main reason why I think this logo works so well, the name is so short and snappy that it just rolls out. tongue like a nice fat scoop of ben and jerry cookie dough ice cream and excuse me but are those two eyes supposed to represent two separate people because i think it will? This is a very clever inclusion by the designer because this actually shows what the wii is essentially a system designed to be played with other people i mean look at all the commercials out there you have people a people grandma serena williams this system is not it's called u it's called wii and that's for a reason too what's happening in that commercial with serena what's happening in 2001 we have three things jacob has always been a big fan of we have luigi's mansion one scooby-doo and the cyber chase and this hot ass logo the original xbox logo is a beacon of hope when it comes to the world of graphic design the ground opens up to reveal this chasm which then reveals the green x which is so fucking cool man , I mean even rock took a while to break people's necks to talk about this console I don't know I guess it was okay but the main point here is that early in the d 2000s, green was never used when it came to technology, it was always like black and red. re like, oh, how about we put some blue in there?
Yeah, tech companies really like blue, so this little wee like you knows an independent tech company. I don't know if you've heard of them or not. His name is microsoft they come over and they're all like they want to see the future this just wasn't something I've seen before up to this point I mean the background here opens up to reveal all the endless possibilities of your console oh that it's heavy one detail that I really like a lot is that these fins that are created from the energy coming out are not exactly skinny fins I mean I don't know about you but this subconsciously tells me to the viewer that whatever is on the ground open should be pretty serious shading o If the various shades of green in here also make this work really well now yeah they could just slap some on like a lame radial gradient just to send her to school but no they didn't rather they took the time to create and shade. walls here and it gave the logo some dimension for all of us to look at and think about well that's pretty cool if they had made it completely flat and minimalist then it would lose a lot of the meaning of the logo with all this extra shading you're basically telling the viewer than just dive into the world of xbox and see what it's all about.
I don't even know why I like this logo I just made back in the 90's we had some pretty atrocious graphic design with stuff like this on this now luckily sony didn't get the ugly as a ball logo design memo thank god not like i briefly said in my last
videoand then i realized i had to stop as i wanted to make this video too the playstation 1 logo is so fucking good it just happened so this logo was designed by manabu sakamoto and i'm sorry i insulted like all of japan for how badly i did, but since the console was created from the inner workings of the super nintendo, sony decided to go. with a pretty similar color scheme with red, blue, yellow and green now usually I'm not too crazy about so many colors within one logo but every time each one is this balanced yeah I really like it, so i remember reading once that the colors in this design are supposed to represent the feelings of uh brilliance joy passion and elegance now i'm not sure if i would classify this as elegant i usually like to reserve that word for the taco logo bell but the best part of this logo has to be the use of the p and s here as i love whoever's cool design idea came up with making the p just drop down to the s and use it as a shadow i mean that that's just genius dude i think by doing the p it's super bold like in your red face it's probably the smart move here because it makes it stand out so much to the viewer and cements the p as this symbol that just exi ge your attention it just begs you to look at it now as far as the s goes it looks like an infinity symbol so that's quite funny but the colors of the s always have this receding effect because the further they get from the eye , the darker the color gets, but at the same time each color is actually rendered the same way, just messing with my mind, but in a good way, you know what annoys me in a bad way, boy new from pringles it's so pale and white now the playstation 1 logo is just one of those logos that begs you to look at it I mean even if you don't like video games I'm sorry if you took a look at this logo while you walk into walmart or something you're probably thinking to yourself well i have to know what is this the playstation thing is about what h is more than i can say about the ps5 logo because that logo sucks so you know i said the wii was the best nintendo logo no so the nintendo switch is nintendo's new baby that's actually as old as me when i stopped shooting my pants and i was full of using the bathroom this console is awesome man i love it so much that started a revolution in the gaming industry that seamlessly brought full console games into the driving experience and vice versa, it's great, it kind of changed the way I play games. games because now I'm done with most of them and whether you like those drifting asses or not you have to admit it makes for a pretty cool logo so the switch logo is extremely good for two reasons balance and simplicity it's not all nasty and over the top like our good old friend the apf imagination machine here oh I love that thing but instead it focuses on a color that can change depending on what background you put it on it even looks good on the vomit of the baby, so when it comes to logo design, there's usually this industry standard that's in place, so you as a designer are expected to make sure that whatever logo you're designing can actually work. in a single color version and it's a full color version so sometimes this can literally just you can do it by taking your wordmark here and making it all a single color but sometimes in rea ity you have to select different elements and tweak them slightly to make sure your logo works in one color i mean many of my favorite stores use one color like mcdonald's coco chanel target they all show the confidence and professionalism you would expect from a big corporation except for the ugly pekko logo but that's another topic for another day and i want to go into nintendo logo screens this level of confidence being able to exist in literally any other color scheme be it red or black , it all works because their logo is simple and clean and has a clear u. understanding of your marketing goal which is to be serious but also a little bit playful now as i said before the other reason your logo works so well is because it's balanced the switch logo has this really perfect symmetry combination because it fits pretty neatly inside a square, but you want to know something, it's not actually symmetrical, which isn't, I know here's the wordmark and here's the center point.
This blew my mind every time I first saw it so the logo actually weighs more on the left side than the right side but the crazy thing is it looks like everything is centered and balanced this is because this joy control technically has more visual weight than this and that's because this one is solid and this one isn't if the designer made the controllers the exact same size you would get something that looks like this and nobody wants that and it's also the fact that the switch logo was very similar to the yin and yang symbol, so you know it represents the symbolism of balance and symmetry in your life, but you know I'm going to be real here.
I'm not breaking new ground by saying that I feel like that's a no-brainer. people already knew i thought i'd include it because i'm talking about logos yeah i think i'm ok i already covered what i wanted to talk about hereToday, I hope you all enjoyed it, I hope you all had an Awesome Thanksgiving. I'm going back to playing a bunch of Tetris effects on my Switch. It's been a lot of fun lately. It could air soon. i wanna say hello to people yeah okay first of all i just wanna say uh thanks for watching the video daisy says thanks too as you can obviously see and also i just realized i didn't have any recording . of her uh in this video and i think that bothered her a bit i don't think i'm too happy about it i mean she's not even sitting here next to me anymore so that's all i had to say thank you so much again for watch the channel and as always Daisy wants to play she really likes to play so yeah let's play.
