Apr 06, 2024
It was one of the best games I've ever been associated with at this level, you know, fantastic teams and great competitors playing their hearts out, you know, a dream that every kid has when they go to college and, um, uh , there is something. about when you get to this particular game and you win this particular game, uh, it might even be more emotional than winning a national championship game sometimes because you know how hard it was to get here and I'm so proud of them and their uh. the sense of faith in themselves never wavered, no matter what happened, no matter who we lost one after another, they never gave up on their dream and now here we are, you've talked a lot about what it means to be a coach at this stage.

In your life was there anything more meaningful than watching your players celebrate on that court tonight now now there isn't, I mean, you're always, you're always, you're always trying to do everything you can to help them do it. certain goals that they have um you know you're there with them every day you see how hard they work um they buy into the things that we preach every day about what's important and how to um how to play this game and what it means to play together and hopefully , a lot of the coaches will also like, you know, we're trying to teach them more than just winning, but when they win and achieve something that's really hard to achieve, you understand. excited for them and you feel their enthusiasm you yourself said it might take a

miracle

for you guys to do this do you feel like this is your best job as a coach in Yukon that you actually conjured up some kind of

miracle

here um there are moments where you know that you've maximized your players' abilities um I'm a very realistic person you know I don't try to put unrealistic expectations on players um and when I saw them after what happened I thought it would take a miracle yeah yesterday was Easter , so Easter is a celebration of Miracles, and today is April Fool's Day, so it's either a miracle or a cruel joke, but you know we'll get it.

From then on, we'll get there next week and find out if it's real, but I think all of our St coaches have probably worked the hardest to keep it together, not so much on offense, what defense and all those other things and just keep the All this together and not let us fall apart because of all the things that have happened. You know, I talked to Lindsay before the game and you know, we're just talking about how hard it is to train in a circumstance like that. So yeah, I think our coaching staff had to deal with a tremendous amount of things this year that we've never had to deal with before and, I'm really, really proud of our staff and our president, she was here and she's not here. .

She's already heading to the plane, but I hope she reads that, uh, yeah, the best coaching job ever done in the history of women's basketball. Paige always wants to be um superum and you, you, you can't, you can't aspire to be, but she tries. Her biggest effort at being superhuman today was playing against someone who plays like she's superhuman, you know, I think that was probably the toughest matchup any of those guards had all season, maybe since they came to Connecticut. You know, I think Juju is probably, um, you know, as difficult a matchup as there has been or has been for our players, um, but for Paige, you know, this is what I live for, I live for these moments and um , believe.

She almost looks at him, she looks at him like they have to protect me too. I'm a tough opponent for them and she always tries to make it our team against theirs, but I know she's very proud of you. she was pointing out her 10 rebounds um and I pointed out JuJu's 10 rebounds and you know she had an excuse why you know Juju got 10 you know or why she couldn't she didn't get 15 she said she was busy locking up someone she didn't I don't get 15, so when you have players who think there's nothing I can't do and there's nothing I can't do, they're just on another level, they play on another level, they think on a different level and they inspire everyone. around her um so yeah, today Paige was doing Paige stuff what's your impression of this moment for women's basketball obviously two exciting matchups tonight the star power the attention being paid to these games the viewership is growing um what is it? your take on that uh I didn't get to watch the first game uh you know everyone was following it for sure uh when I saw the halftime score was 45 45 I actually thought man I wish I was there like I really want to see What is happening there?
Those people should be in luck right now. You know you don't want to, you don't want to overdramatize it, you know, but for a long time it was, um, if someone had these kind of moments like these kids are having right now, or they were automatically compared to men's basketball and they were always left with you win or they were amazing, look at that look like there's actually a female athlete who can do that, you know, so she never got the respect factor. It was always a factor of disbelief. I can't believe you know she plays like a boy, you know, but now it's real.
They are now being appreciated for their incredible talents, the show they put on, the excitement they created. on the court, the excitement that the fans feel, um and God bless them, they've done it, it's almost like they've made everyone come to the 20th century, so to speak, and finally realize what these people are capable of. to do and it's pretty, it's pretty notable and next weekend should be just as fun as this weekend, but yeah, I hope, I hope, I hope Caitlyn Clark had a personal agenda against LSU and I know there's nothing personal between she and me. so I don't need to see her drop 50 on us next weekend, you know, so I love her.
I think she is the best player. Forget what I ever said. Paige is the best player in the country. I think she is the best player of all time. I don't know who said that. I said Paige is the best player in the country. What skills does she have? Basketball skills. Leadership skills. What's wrong with Paige? That puts her possibly on Mount Rushmore Women's Yukon Basketball. She is a selfless human being, so that separates automatically. she of a lot of other people, she takes care of her teammates better than anyone I've ever seen, maybe you know there have been others, of course, but the way she shares shares all her good luck, all the good things that they come to him.
They don't really mean anything to her unless she can share them with her teammates.
