Gone Too Soon: Jason LefflerFeb 15, 2022
lefflerwas a nascar driver who competed from the early 2000s to the early 2010s before he made a name for himself in nascar he was known as one of the best in usac he was mentored by the one and only pj jones and as a teenager he happily swept the floors, cleaned car parts, and soaked up everything he could about the sport at the Torrance store. It was a bit of a rough start early in his USAC career. He started in auto racing where he was still learning the ropes in early 1996. He was named the series' Most Improved Driver and earned his first win in the California box, but from 1997 to 1999 his USAC career skyrocketed and he ended up winning Three consecutive championships from 1997 to 1999, as well as the Interspersed Silver Crown Series championship in between in 1998.
His success in New Sac obviously caught the eye of car owners in both NASCAR and the Indie Racing League. his first participation in roadway racing in 1999 unfortunately led to his first dnf the fo The following season he made two more starts in Las Vegas and finished 17th in that season's Indy 500, but in the end he decided he wanted to pursue racing stock car full time to get more on center pole
jasonlefler ken squire yeah liffler held on to that third place in the first eight laps here let's not forget he had u a very good run at the arca race in atlanta last fall he finished fifth and ran steadily all day the three time usac champ really got off to a great start here. in texas today he finally fell back a bit here in the rankings but we expect him to be a real contender for years to come if you hired a guy on st patrick's day to be a leprechaun he would be a real contender with the success stories of jeff gordon and tony stewart you stack stars were getting more opportunities in nascar than ever it was only natural that joe gibbs racing would hire jason
lefflerfor the entire season of the bush series in 2000. he showed flashes of speed and promise throughout the season in which he scored three pole positions in his rookie year was unfortunately marred by inconsistency and resulted in a 20th-place finish in points, but that didn't scare this cup series team from snatching him up for the 2001 season. chip ganassi racing needed to replace the late kenny irwin jr with a promising young full time driver it was only natural that jason lefler would get the call as he came from usac just like kenny irwin jr, though he showed flash like promise scoring a poll in kansas his rookie season for chip ganassi racing was honestly one of the worst in nascar history over the tunnel many cars everywhere big rig jason leftler steve park thats it what happens over that tunnel the car just lets go over the turn over the tunnel turns there a lot happens it sits on the throttle smokin' the rear tire spinning and of course every time it turns it's just making more smoke and blocking the Race track, we saw the net, come on, man, he shot Jones, Boy Lefler. just drove up to the buckshot side and look at this oh wow oh it's not over and the lefler car thing already had damage and that probably didn't make it the car probably took the final tally for his rookie season 2001 with zero wins zero top 5s one top 10 one run and an average finish of 27.7 with a 37th place in points as well as six dnqs and eight dnfs chip ganassi racing let jason lether go after the 2001 season so it was only natural that Lefleur went to a couple of series to help rebuild his career and he did it in the nascar craftsman truck series from 2002 to 2003 driving the number two dodge for jimmy smith in his first season he scored 11 top 5's and 50 top 10's and the whopping 8 poles but sadly didn't win but still finished in the top 5 at the point 2003 saw him compete in most truck series races that season scoring 10 top 10s and two pole positions but ultimately crossed that bridge Before the end of may taking his first career win at dover down the stretch he goes under half a mile to go for jason how about dennis connor comes on board in the first race calling rick, he goes up in turn four and the mbna armed forces family 200 champion crosses the finish line during that same season?
He made six starts in the double zero Haas Automation Chevy and was good enough to get a full-time job for the 2004 season. He faced some pretty serious competition that year in Martin Trex Jr and Kyle Busch, two future champions of the cup series, but Jason. Lether stood his ground with Booty Barker by his side, had one of the best seasons of his entire career, eight top-5s, 17 top-10s, a third-place finish in points and his first career Bush Series win at Nashville, half followed to go by Jason. leffler are out at turn number four he has about 200 yards to go if he was a bad guy i'd say he'll make it and jason leffler has enough fuel to go the distance and score his first nascar bush series win first win for his owner , gene haas, his performances in the nascar bush series once again caught the eye of joe gibbs racing, only this time he would give a much bigger gig, a full-time opportunity to drive the number 11 chevy fedex express in the series of the nascar cup for 2005. without a doubt this was the best opportunity jason leffler had ever had in his entire nascar career, it was the inaugural season of what we now know as fedex 11, sadly the first driver on this journey did not fare so good, he collects jason. as they slide through turns three and four left in the car uh eleven had nowhere to go jason leflar climbs and smokes trouble in turn two jason leffler bounces off the walls and the yellow flag is already at the food city 500. one of the worst seasons any major team could have hands down in 19 starts lefler had no top 10 finishes averaging 27.5 average with lackluster performances in the team's inaugural season naturally joe gibbs was going to look elsewhere part In August a change was made which was quite frustrating, but you know it's the racing.
I look forward to a great future with Denny. I have had a great experience with joe gibbs racing so far and hopefully this will be our last announcement for dozens of years next one hopefully he will retire denny hamlin hasn't left that ride since but this was not the end of jason lefler's nascar career not even close in 2006 he returned to the nascar bush series to drive for braun racing in at the time they were a chevy team but in 2007 they would switch to toyota in their first season at the beginning the 2007 season looked like another bad season for jason leffler, he was as low as 23rd in the standings to start the season, but by mid-summer, they were able to push the gray 38 toyota clips up to 5th in the standings, a massive turnaround, but that it wouldn't be the end the quest to get toyota's first win in the nascar bush series was on and by the time they come back hurt irp jason lefler would do exactly that let's talk more about jason leffler from j ackaroo remember guys before that next before technically they weren't new they had four laps in a simulated qualifying attack they reasoned that if the last 50 laps they could gain a half second on the leaders they might be able to drive this big blitz toyota in a win late, hey wow, the man in third place dives in trying to challenge his fellow toyota driver it's jason leffler, guys it wasn't just the tire choice that has given lefleur this new muscle his spotter noticed that some cars were picking up a bit further down the corner so spotters said jason wanted to try to get down and shannon thats what he's doing right now take a look he may have it this time rude opened the door long enough and boy lefler just slipped and the team says come on honey one more to go there do the old slide work here at irp this time wait and this maybe they could be rudiment taking advantage of dow On the front leg he goes into one and does it pulls it back you know biff loved this yeah yeah biff will say its not over yet and there will be more contact they will face the one to the other We promised you some bumps on the fender we did.
I don't know if we would have that much. This one goes to the wire. Rudiment can't do anything but watch right now and Leftler has a nose in front. Can you make it stick? Here comes Biffle back. I tell you what a whale Jason is going to be. from an end he already has two to go coming straight to line two this time and leftler leans on him lets go he can still grab lefleur he may be able to clear it coming off two does he might be saying goodbye to him right now he will get his first win here at o'reilly raceway park and will be the man to hand toyota its first nascar bus series win there's the one ladies great job good job everyone good call hey guys this is all for guys good job lucy te you deserve this let's go Great job on victory lane this was a significant win in all of Nascar history at the time but it's even more significant when you look at Toyota's track record since then think of all the races they have won and what we now know as Xfinity series competition despite everything. the races kyle busch could have won jason lethler will always be the man who gave toyota its first win in the now named nascar xfinity series he followed that win with a third-place finish in points in 2007 and would end up driving for braun racing all along through 2011.
In his five seasons with the team, he posted point finishes of 3rd, 9th, 4th, 9th and 6th Little did we know that his IRP victory would be the finale of his Nascar career. . 2011 turned out to be Jason Lefler's last full-time. season in nascar i was ready to move on from brom racing after the season but the way it ended wasn't the best yeah it's a great move you can see jason really lets loose there in two elliot is able to do that pass two at a time easy gets into it oh that's terrible and almarola also contacts and caution is out clements gets involved a somewhat subdued gesture if obviously not happy with jason lefler but like i said i was hoping to see out smoke from those ears im sure the video shows the 38 just ran right behind us not a lot of respect for guys vying for the championship i thought i was doing the right thing walking away they both got loose in the middle from one and two, I stop under them, get away from them so I don't crowd them all because the tracks narrow, I clear them and then I have the line going to turn three and he's just running after me so Woody, I mean, very frustrating. very cool seems like you work all season to put yourself in a situation and it all goes away in a split second it stopped
sooner than i expected but ultimately its my responsibility and it slid down the track i think it was early not t o pass the corner he was running against eric but i take full responsibility you know i mean i can't run right after him i went last it wasn't on purpose it was a mistake on my part so i feel bad for him and his guys at least you gotta give it to him for admitting who went wrong after 2011 jason lefler joined kyle busch motorsports in the nascar truck series for the 2012 season was supposed to be a full-time gig but only lasted a total of 10 races, strings of bad luck and poor performance plagued to the team and in mid august jason lefler would end up being released by kyle busch motorsport after this there weren't many other offers to go to nascar in time c omplete.
Racing while making a handful of cup and national series starts in 2012 and 2013, his main focus was once again on dirt, that's where Leffler's true talent shone and he probably preferred dirt racing over everything else. , I was starting to make the transition. to once again become a full-time dirt racer unfortunately he would never have the opportunity to make the full transition on June 12, 2013 tragedy would strike nascar driver jason lefler died following an accident on a dirt car track in new jersey lefleur ran 294 races in the 73rd national series in the sprint cup series, including last sunday's cup race at long beach, california native pocono lefler, just 37, lost his nascar trip after that last season he drove mostly dirt car races this season he ran only one cup race this season at pocono and finished 43rd for the humphrey smith races i was actually at a football camp when i turned on sportscenter and saw the exact same news report that made me pause for a day or two. lefler was involved in an accident during a 4-10 sprint car heat race that took place at Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey Lefler's car had suffered a front suspension failure that caused him to hit a wall and roll over several times .
Unfortunately,he lost consciousness instantly in the accident. the cause of death was later revealed to be severe blunt force trauma to the neck and spinal injury after his death, many drivers and racing associations such as nascar and indycar made statements and gave their condolences to the nascar drivers who they were competing in the next race in michigan they had special decals put on their cars in honor of leffler danny hamlin even got to run a throwback schematic to the first fedex 11 car that was driven by him jason leffler was one of my favorite drivers to watch grow up when he was a kid his nascar cup series career might not have been the best in the world but overall when you look at his nascar career in all the top 3 series combined it certainly wasn't a bust you mention jason leffler's name for your fans and you will get a ton of praise immediately in 2018 jason leffler was officially inducted into the usac hall of fame at the nationals it's from chili bowl 2021 last name leffler returned next to damon gardner's inlet with th Supporting jason lefler's son charlie jason leffler was 37 years old.
